- A brief clip from our recent special "A Message From Space", celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Was Stanley Kubrick scooped on "2001: A Space Odyssey"? For a moment there, he sure thought so.

Intriguing. I didn't think we'd be seeing interplanetary rivalry for at least another century.
Depending on how far that signal came from, it could have been sent billions of years ago meaning that whoever (if anyone) sent that signal was that advanced that long ago.
I suppose it begs the question if we hear a signal for all intents and purposes seems like a directed signal from outside our system....then what? If SETI actually succeeded decades ago then all their work is amounting to just 'Wow!' and a footnote. What's the follow up plan if a signal is received? Just more passive listening?
That's scary to think about if that is the case. Imagine how technologically advanced they are now.
Interesting. You would think if this was a natural occurrence, like the pulsar, it would be picked up in the same area on a regular basis. The fact that it only occurred once, it could either just be some electrical noise in the equipment, or something originating from an alienmade source.
Definitely more advanced; We'd be the infants in any interstellar encounter. But I hope the 'facing extinction' part is just a phase every technological civilization including ours has to get through as part of its painful evolution towards maturity (and rationality). Caught in the current moment I agree that optimism is a pretty high bar, but I remain hopeful. (And yes, sometimes even optimistic.)
If it was sent that long ago, they are either now: more advanced or facing extinction.
What makes you think that people or the Universe was designed? I think it's even more beautiful to think that it is all natural and by chance. :3
