2014 Dodge Avenger SE here. I’ve had it since February 2021. The only things I’ve had to do to the car is replace the (2) camshaft sensors. I also went ahead and replaced the crankshaft sensor for any future occurrences. God forbid. The car was sitting at 81k when I bought it and is now at 93k. I’ve traveled to Austin several times and I give all the Glory to God for taking me to and back safely

Hey, just bought one today here in Quebec. A 2010 with just over 80,000km! Owned by an old lady. Always garaged, maintained per the manual and rust proofed every year….only has one chip on the paint in front of the hood. Paid 4000$. Looks 90-95% new! I had a Dodge Shadow that i kept 20 years and did over 220,000 km with. And they had a very bad reputation. So i’m pretty confident it is going to be a good car for me. Here is my story with my Dodge Avenger SXT Plus with the V6.
Heatercore went out at 50k miles
Trans went out at 60k miles
Paint started to fade at 60k miles
Blend door actuator went out at 80k miles
Cheap plastics easily break and the interior seems like it is not meant to be taken apart and put back together with out breaking anything.
I do want to add something; the Dodge Avenger can be reliable and I’ve seen many of them lasting well over 200k miles. If you happen to have a faulty transmission, then you might be in trouble. Everything else about the car isn’t to bad or hard to repair.
Sorry about the weird Audio! Hopefully it doesn't distract from the important information!

I purchased my 2014 Dodge Avenger Se in 2018 with 102k on it. The only thing that first went wrong and is still annoying to this day, so there is a "tag" in the steering wheel and it clicks while driving... I have managed to put a piece of cardboard between the steering wheel and steering column cap and it stops the noise. This started happening about 2 or 3 days after I purchased it. I have watched a video about it and the only way to get rid of it is to take the dash apart and then the steering column. Im not sure why dodge didn't make the steering column easier to take apart or why they didn't remove the tag in the steering wheel. Second, we changed brakes and rotors for the front in 2020, then had to buy four brand new tires and 18's are not cheap, very hard to find a decent price. Then the car started jumping going up hills, and then it progressed to certain speeds it would start to jerk, well we thought it was a transmission filter and we had a mechanic look at it, he said plugs but he said it was odd not to show a check engine light, so we had the filter changed, cost us $80 for part and labor and it didn't help, but the transmission filter was dirty and had junk in it, so good thing it was changed anyway. We bought plugs which ended up being $30 for 4 and my 20-year-old nephew put them on at the parts place and within 30 mins it was done, saved me $40 labor and we drove the car everywhere for about an hour and I did all the speeds and it never once jerked, so if you run into this problem, change plugs. Also, you are supposed to change the transmission filter every 6 months to 1 year. If you haven't done this, be a good thing to do. Next was changing front brakes and rotors again last year, 2021. This year, I will end up changing the back rotors and brakes, I already have the parts on hand lol Rotors and brakes is pretty cheap through rockauto. The car has been a blessing to us and we like the car very much, gets good gas mileage too.

Almost 100k on my 2014 2.4 Avenger. The only issues I’ve encountered have been the Throttle body at about 60k miles (common failure not mentioned in the video) and the upper radiator hose (common failure not mentioned in the video).
Dodge changed the type of coolant they use for all 2014 model year vehicles and I haven’t heard of any heater core issues on the 2014s so far.
It’s been a pretty good car overall with the exception of the throttle body issue which is a rather expensive part to replace. Just regular maintenance and not beating on it will go a long way.

Oh and that gas cap thing, we had that happen too, got a locking cap, fixed that problem for $12 lol
I have an OBD2 and it helps out a lot. We had to change the main driver window switch. It's cost us about 15 bucks on Amazon and I changed it myself, very easy to do. But the back window wouldn't roll up, it went bad all of sudden because the day before it worked fine. So my father n law said oh you will need a new rear right window switch and I tested the main switch and all the other windows worked and I did a little research, where people purchased the rear window switch and it didn't work, so I ordered the main switch and it fixed the problem... 😁 I say we have put about $300 into the car since 2018 and that is not bad at all. One thing I hate is where the battery is located... Not sure who thought it was a good idea to put a battery near the wheel but I hope they no longer work for dodge lol...

All points that you say are valid and every car has flaws even my Honda CR-V 2006 had issues, by experience I can say the 4-cil Avenger is one of the easiest cars to maintain, almost every part is accessible with ease, the transmission is kinda lame but with a change service on time replacing the speed sensors, fluid and filter it can last a long time and it isn't expensive. I think the actuators have been the worst thing they made on the car. Cool video.

And a caliper or two. And every time someone removes a tire, Broken Studs and Lug Nuts!! I got the car at 36,000 miles, its going on 92000 now. I have a 2011 Mainstreet 3.6 V6. Had it since new and it has 155k miles. The paint is definitely gone to shit. I haven't had any issues with the heating or cooling so far and the blender is working perfectly. I keep my system on auto and just adjust the temperature. So it will run heat or a/c whichever is needed to keep the desired temp. The stereo did go out a little over a year ago, and I replaced it with an aftermarket. I changed the plugs at 100k but haven't had any issues with the coilpacks. I've done the brakes on it twice. The last time was last year. Replaced the rotors as well. And I've changed the thermostat. I have a code that just popped up for the gascap so I will be picking one up soon. I've heard you should change the trans fluid every 50k, but a local mechanic told me not to mess with it. So I have never changed it. Trans shifts quickly and smoothly. No jarring or weirdness. This car has nice power and can get up to speed in a hurry if you need it to. My commute to/from work is 25 miles one way and is almost 50/50 city/hwy and I get about 26mpg. That's doing the actual math and not using the trip computer.
A couple of years ago, the warning that the left turn signal was out started coming on. I could clearly see the signal still worked so I didn't know what the deal was. Then I noticed it only gave me the warning when I had my lights on. Never could figure it out. Then one night I got pulled over for having a tag light out. I replaced the tag light which was more of a pita than it should be. You have 2 star screws holding the light in place, but if you let it fall after taking the screws out, you will have to take your bumper off to be able to reach it. But once I replaced the light, I no longer got the error that my turn signal was out. Apparently my tag light had been been out for a few years and that is what the message was trying to tell me.
There are two things that I hate, and I really mean hate, about this car is the blacked out part at the rear of the passenger window makes for a HELL of a blind spot when pulling out of a parking spot. I keep telling myself I need to get a backup camera for this reason, but haven't done it yet. The other issue, and I've heard this is common, is the water channels for the trunk cause bad leaking into the trunk area. Right now, when I raise my trunk, I can hear water inside the trunk lid. I'm not sure if a new trunk lid would have the same issue or what, but it's annoying.
Overall, I love this car. I love the way it drives, how it handles and responds. Everything still feels tight on it. I want to try to keep it going and in good repair, because even when I drive newer cars, I couldn't see replacing my Avenger with one of them.

2014 2.4 Avenger Owner: I have bought it in 2015 and when it was at 10k miles. It's currently @ 80k miles at time of post.
The plastics in the car are cheap. The exterior plastics will dry rot (like every car) I also live in Florida and park outside so the exterior is exposed to extreme sun and rain.
The only 3 issues I have had was the radiator fill cap dry rotted and became very brittle. Luckily It overheated 1 parking lot over from an autozone and was able to fix it in the parking lot with a pair of pliers and the catalytic converter went under recall. This was tripping an error code on an air sensor, but my local dodge retailer put a new one in for free (Check your vin on the recall page), Lastly, the actuator on the passenger side air control started making a clicking noise. This video WAYYYYY over exaggerated how loud it is. It's a little clicking noise that goes for a few seconds then stops when you hit the control button. I just set mine so it's always circulating the cabin air and unplugged it. Done.
My paint is fine except on the after market spoiler which was a different type of paint and only guaranteed for 5 years and the back bumper, but I added a trailer hitch and my bike pedals will spin and rub on that area when I am heading to the trails.
Other than that. The car has been fantastic. I even shop for new cars every few months to see what's out there and nothing peaks my interest. Mine is the SE so I added the spoiler, a Cold air intake, back-up cam and head unit, trailer hitch and custom sized leather car seat covers.

Also clear coat issues. I may take it in to a Dodge dealer to get a look over. But they'll probably try to sell me a Charger. Overall it's gotten me where I need to go and it's easy for me to drive.

actuator died, gascap issue, also when you pass random E/RF the car engine light comes on (replicate-able and weird!) also a big issue in the winter below -25C, also a winter problem but it consume a ton of start up power arbitrarily and drains batteries = cold start issues, window master switches went out, chronic alignment problems that cause extreme torque steering, USBs dont work and I swear my seat belts dont lock. Probably not something i should put off, but I was thinking about putting in racing belts.
I'll probably never buy a dodge again, just based on the winter issue. But the height and weighting of the car are also a big issue. Oversteer is annoying as F and I dont want to fight the car to drive the car, I'd rather the steering on the cavalier. At least you can predict fish tailing.

This is the 3rd time and I've ordered an alternator and plan on buying another battery, current battery about 4 months old. Any thoughts on what the problem could be? It's turning into a money pit but I did buy used. Avenger tears in Texas.

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  3 года назад +1

I would first on foremost clean the terminals that are attached to the batteries and make sure that it a very secure and clean connection. I would then grab a volt meter and make sure that the battery is receiving charge for the alternator while the car is running, which should be around 14.2 volts. Then, I would be sure the battery is holding a charge. Check the volts while the car is off and make sure it has 12v.
Depending which one is the issue, you could trouble shoot from there.
