  • The Isekai Problem: anime is garbage, an essay.
    The king of weeaboos takes a look at Mushoku Tensei and Re:Zero, the so-called pinnacles of isekai, and questions where it all went wrong.
    --
    Oh, anime, what happened to you? You used to be so energetic and full of life, now look at you. Sure, you’re producing more good shows than ever but sometimes I feel like your heart’s just not in it. Oh I hear you, shouting fun lighthearted isekai adventure at the top of your lungs, but when I look over and see you sitting in the corner, chain smoking and [censored], I feel like maybe one of us is missing something.

    So, I don’t normally comment on a lot of videos. I’m more of a… “sit back and watch with some popcorn” kind of guy. But after a couple days of just coming back to this video, reading the comments and seeing what the vibe is, I just had to say something.
    I want to just go ahead and start off with this; This is probably going to be very long, and will most likely repeat a lot of details and points that other people have made. The layout might be weird; I’m typing this out on my tiny ass phone screen, but, nonetheless, I really hope you’ll read this entire thing and hear me out. I’m going to leave out anything season 2 related; the most I’ll do is allude to some plot points. So I guess I’ll get started.
    If you couldn’t tell, I love Re:Zero. Not only do I love it, it is very important to me. I’ve even caught up to the web novel; it’s at arc 7 right now, which would probably be around season 4 or 5, depending on how they go about adapting it all to anime format (if they adapt it). And it’s not even close to being done. The author has stated that 11 arcs are planned to adapt the entire story, and given the pace at which the web novel is being created, I might be in for 4-5 more years of my life on this damn story. Season 1 of Re:Zero consisted of arcs 1 to 3: the capital arc, the mansion arc and the whole cult thing with the whale arc respectively. The author has even stated that episodes 1-18 are the prologue to the entire story. The prologue.
    So, what am I even getting at?
    Throughout all of your replies and comments, you seem to have this inherent misunderstanding of what the show is really about. You talk constantly about how mysteries are never answered; you think you’re just being spoon-fed small pieces of information, stuff that doesn’t answer any big mystery. And you’re exactly right. The majority of Re:Zero Season 1 is a prologue to a gigantic story, much bigger than the entirety of Attack on Titan and Mushoku Tensei combined. Why would anything about the Witch of Envy be answered this early on in the story? It wouldn’t make any sense. But even then, you are very keen on ignoring literally everything else the show has to offer. Sure, Re:Zero may have the Mystery tag, but it’s not just a mystery. Sure, Re:Zero might have the Psychological Thriller tag, but it’s not just about the psychological aspects. Re:Zero has a lot of lore, but it’s not just about the lore. Re:Zero has great music, but, tell me, would you watch a show if it only had good music. Re:Zero has great characters, but it’s not just about the characters. Emelia, Rem, Ram, Roswaal, Puck, Otto, Priscilla, Crushe, Anastasia, Felt, Reinhard, Julius, each with their own history, motivations and goals. There are so many memorable events that happen throughout the show in relation to these characters: the lap pillow scene with Emelia in episode 7, Rem and Subaru’s conversations in both episode 11 and the infamous episode 18, the talk between Julius and Subaru as they ride out to vanquish Sloth, and many more in Season 2. But, as I said before, these characters and character moments aren’t everything. Too often do I see other comments and reviews on RUclips say that the characters are the only thing that Re:Zero has to offer. Stories, including movies and books, have to have multiple things that work in tandem to keep the viewer coming back. Re:Zero does this excellently.
    But, I’ll be honest, I’ve basically just spent about an hour of my life typing all that shit and so many other people have already said it before. I’m just beating a dead horse, or in this case, a horse with severe neck pain. Why don’t you just… get a massage or something?
    Why do you insist on having problems with this show? Most of the problems you present in this video are just things that you’ve made up. Rem and Ram aren’t lolis, and they never act like children; I guess short people don’t exist and everyone below 5’1” should be thrown in the gas chamber? (Tbh I kinda agree) The story never forgets the mysteries. It just puts them down for a second so it can play with some new toys. A lot of the first 10 episodes or so is to show off the characters and their many personalities using Return by Death. Return by Death is a great tool to do this; you get to see characters who are sweet in the beginning turn into ruthless killers depending on Subaru’s actions and vice versa. It gets you attached to the main characters, ones that you’ll have to deal with throughout the majority of the story. What’s wrong with that? Why care about the mystery and it’s relation to the characters if you don’t care about the characters in the first place? This horse refuses to go to a chiropractor and continues to sleep like a dead video game character with rag doll physics.
    These commenters don’t hate you because you don’t like what they like. They’re not annoyed because you said “good thing bad.” These people, these fans, just want you to see the greatness of something that they adore. Everyone wants everyone to like what they like, but that’s not how the world works. I’m sure you’re already tired of reading comments from people who really like Re:Zero and you’re probably really tired of them talking about how you’re probably really tired of reading comments from people who really like Re:Zero. You’re preventing yourself from enjoying something great, and that’s really disappointing. Whenever I see someone talk shit about Re:Zero, I feel bad knowing what I know. I feel bad, knowing that they’re missing out on a great story with amazing characters, music, art (nghhhhh kinda), lore, mystery, suspense and writing. And these things only become more apparent in Season 2.
    All in all, I am begging you to watch Season 2 with an open mind. Try not to let your bad experiences with the show taint the rest of it. You need to watch all of Season 2 before deciding if you’ll stick with the show, not just the first couple episodes or the first half, but the ENTIRE thing. Personally, I think Season 1 and Season 2 should be reviewed together as you don’t really get a full understanding of what the show is until you’ve seen both Seasons, but there’s not really anything I can do about that, can I? I really hope you make another video on it once you finish, or at least update the comment section on this video cause I would really like to see what you think of it. It might change your life or it might make you hate it even more than you already do. You might come to my house in the middle of the night and kill me for wasting your time. But hey, who knows? Maybe Season 2 is that much needed neck massage.
    (Oh my god pleeeease tell me I didn’t make some stupid mistake somewhere. AHHHHHHHHH)

      wow thank you for the extremely thoughtful comment friend. i disagree with a lot of the things you think are good but that's personal taste. i'm pretty sure i touched on a few things i liked in the video, and i absolutely didn't hate it, i think i even specifically mentinoed the ending theme is by far the best i've ever heard, actually.
      i will say i'm not "insisting" on having problems with the show, i gave it a fair chance to impress me as i would any other show, and it absolutely did, it just failed to live up to how much the start impressed me. you seem to be aware that the things i'm saying are missing ARE missing unlike some of the raving lunatics leaving comments, but it's fair if you don't personally mind the absence of those things.
      but anyway you've convinced me, i will go watch season 2 and give it another chance to impress me again

      And I'm tired of Sao fans and Rezero fans defending thier made by production committee/ extreme editorial oversight novels/shows.

    I remember having a lot of these thoughts about RE:Zero when I first saw Season 1. The story felt very cluttered, it didn't really seem to be going anywhere. Then I saw Season 2 and a lot of questions from Season 1 start to come to light, even if 100 more get brought up. I don't fully get the whole 'titties' thing with RE:Zero considering it never seems to go in that direction once. Maybe a couple of jokes here and there, but they're mostly early in Season 1. The show plays more as a straight romance between Subaru and Emilia imo. Even someone like Beatrice, who could easily be mistaken for any anime loli, has such powerful character development as the story goes on. Unlike other Isekai, RE:Zero just doesn't have those one-note characters. Everyone plays a part. Also, death isn't exactly meaningless for Subaru. The show gets quite clear how much of a toll this ability takes on his mental state and with each loop, his attempts to save everyone are what drives the show for me.
    Sorry, didn't mean to ramble on here too long. This series is just such a banger.

    • @WeebJail
      @WeebJail  2 года назад +2

      hm apparently i didn't explain the whole death is meaningless part clearly enough. i pinned this as a comment but i'll copy it here:
      OBVIOUSLY death affects subaru.
      My problem is that there's never really any driving force behind death in the plot. Why are they dying? Why is Subaru caught up in this shit? There's never any reason beyond LITERALLY just them dying.
      Thats why I was hung up on the dog thing, and Jim Carrey's the mask. They're so inconsequential to everything else, that the story is literally just "when will they die next"? whatever mystery or intrigue it has it immediately forgets about, and it's hard to get emotional about any of the deaths as the audience because we know that it's not permanent. And it doesn't help that it's impossible to take the Mask character seriously in the slightest.
      If season 2 gets a lot better in this regard, maybe I should go watch it, I lost interest by the end of season 1. it did a LOT of things right and there was a lot I enjoyed about it, and I was 100% on board the first few episodes, those were all REALLY fucking good, but with all the problems i outlined i just found it boring, to be honest. but hey if season 2 solves these problems maybe it's worth another chance.
      But the death thing definitely did not go over my head, lol.
      Also: when I'm talking about "titties," I meant "waifu bullshit," forgetting that I'm watching anime, where exhaustive use of titties ARE just a thing lmao xd that one's on me

      @@WeebJail Its not very smart to rant about the show after watching only part of it, some of your arguments would be fair criticism after s1, but for example, in s2 we learned why there was an evil dog that attacked Subaru.
      Re:Zero is scheduled to have 11 arcs (around 8-10 seasons if by some miracle the whole thing would get anime adaptation), so obviously things like secret villains or hidden forces driving the plot cannot be revealed at the very beggining of the story in s1, that would be extremely weak writing.

    • @WeebJail
      @WeebJail  2 года назад

      @Mikołaj Bartoszewski ok yeah but heres the thing, season1 should stand on its own as an anime, there were 5 whole years between season 1 and 2 dawg. if you need the second season in order for it to not be a mess then the first season is obviously flawed.
      if it's part of something bigger it should at least allude to that in some way, not pretend like it's completely irrelevant, that's no different from it literally being irrelevant and the author only realized thats a problem later, which is ENTIRELY possible so the anime should have fixed that lol

    • @mikoajbartoszewski4532
      @mikoajbartoszewski4532 2 года назад +7

    • @WeebJail
      @WeebJail  2 года назад

      @@mikoajbartoszewski4532 i definitely agree but there's a difference between lingering mysteries and forgetting about them entirely. if there's zero sense anything is connected they might as well be irrelevant.
      for example, if the dog is a witch thing, why not have him grey out like he does in the whale scene at some point in that whole business, or something similar? that way you're like ohhhhhh it's connected to the witch, instead of 'uhhhhhhhh okay the curse was a dog? sure, i guess, re zero?'
      its not like it would be spoiling any big secrets, because again we know literally zero about the witch at that point, so all it would be doing is helping point to a larger mystery, which is entirely nonexistent in basically all s1
