I used to use Vegas (until Magix bought it and stuffed it up) so I tried both Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve. For some reason, Premiere just felt wrong and I had trouble getting my head around it. Although the learning curve for Resolve was also quite steep it was a far more pleasant process (maybe because I wasn't worried about a time-limited free trial running out). After using the "free" version of resolve for a couple of months I spent the $300 to buy the studio version and have never regretted it. Actually, I bought Fusion 9 Studio but the dongle used for that also works for Resolve so I got both programs for just $300 which is an absolute bargain. As for Fusion... I love it! The version that is baked into Resolve is nowhere near as fast as the stand-alone version so I'd recommend getting the stand-alone for serious compositing but the baked-in version is fine for simple stuff like titles and basic stuff. If you're going the Resolve way, just make sure your GPU is up to the task. I'm only using a GTX1060/6GB but it works perfectly well for 1080p timelines and the occasional 4K work. For those more focused on 4K stuff you'd be better off with a GPU that has at least 8GB of RAM (GTX1070 and up). Right now the AMD cards work okay (aside from some driver issues with the 5700 and 5700XT) but be aware that some of the OFX components in the studio version rely on CUDA cores to work so you're probably better off with NVIDIA hardware. Even with my lowly GTX1060/6, Resolve Studio version will render a simple HD timeline to H265/HVENC at around 180-200FPS. The free version will be much slower though because only the paid version takes advantage of the H264/265 hardware decoding/encoding found in modern GPUs. But as the man says... DOWNLOAD IT NOW! :-)
Except VRAM isn't a big factor when it comes to NLE or rendering performance because in either of those cases, it's the system RAM what's in use. It's the CUDA performance what actually matters, and a 1060 (as long as it's coupled with a good processor which will always be the real key for optimal performance) has good enough CUDA performance for 4K video in most codecs. If say you have an i7 8700K and a 1060, the i7 will still be the bottleneck in both Resolve and Premiere. Unless you are editing 6K or 8K video or 4K video in a delivery codec, there's almost no point in getting anything better than a 1060 if you're exclusively going to do NLE work.
@@uwirl4338 No, it appears more as if memory bandwidth is the problem. Quite often the system will be working hard with 50% CPU and 50% GPU utilization. I started my transition to DaVinci Resolve 4 months ago and totally happy I did. PPro CS6 was more stable than CC. I continued to use Au, however, because I didn't fully understand Fairlight but Fairlight is easy to use if you just spend a little time with it. For compositing, I continued to use Ae as I fully understood it. So, I am now venturing into Fusion as I want to be completely off of Adobe by end of year. Fusion tutorials would be VERY helpful. I mean, I would pay for a full course on just Fusion if it was offered.

Or the bugs. I was trying to edit for the first time in premiere (after using Sony Vegas for 3 years now) and I was facing timeline bugs. Thinking of jumping ship on resolve.
This was good! Its a bit ironical too. Seeing how Davinci is being hailed in the video, I think it deserves a dedicated playlist on your channel. Most of your content is still geared towards Adobe Suit. One thing to think about is that Fusion uses the same node system that Nuke uses. You can use some of Nuke's tutorials to get you in the right direction with Fusion and also let you see the work flow of folk using Nuke (I believe Nuke is still the industry standard - with Fusion shouldering its way in (probably because they both use nodes)
One advantage for using Resolve for folk interested in entering the major film industry is that Fusion uses the same node system as Nuke. (note: Nuke tutorials can be a help with Fusion)
Just a comment on Fusion vs After Effects. After Effects was the only compositing software I had any experience with for 15 years and the by far the most advanced thing I ever did with it was a title that was about 15 layers. One was a 3D plane, the rest were 2D assets I made in Photoshop and the end result was really just a title. I had long wanted to move to a node-based compositor because of all the pre-comping and visual clutter in After Effects. When Fusion was finally implemented in to Resolve, I gave it a try, and within the first 3 weeks I had made a 3D island, ocean, beach, and skybox without any outside assets. The geometry and textures were made in Fusion. I did this after watching only one tutorial. Obviously that doesn't mean that it would click with others just as well. I have experience programming so they idea of look at things as a process wasn't as foreign to me. Because of that, that may not be the best person to judge the ease of use of either program but I do think there's some Fusion has over AE that would help people learn despite the relative lack of learning resources and that's Templates and Fusion titles. Inside Fusions effects list there are templates for particles, backgrounds, generators, and shaders that get imported as node trees that you can just integrate into your own compositions. You can use these as examples and see how they work and mess with them yourself. There are also templates that are meant to work like tutorials that are grouped into a How To section that show you howspecific nodes work. Fusion titles are pre-made motion graphics titles that come with program that you can modify very simply from the Edit page or you can switch to the Fusion tab and see how they were made. Obviously, Fusion titles are a lot like Essential Graphics in the Creative Cloud but there are two reasons I cite them as a learning advantage. Essential Graphics can't be open in After Effects by just right clicking them in Premiere and selecting "Open in After Effects". You actually have to open AE, find the folder they're stored in (something like Users/App Data/Roaming/Adobe/Common/Essential Graphics on Windows), then find the graphic by name, extract it, update it, save it somewhere else, and THEN you can see how it works. If someone gets that far then that leads to me to reason number 2. Someone looking at an Essential Graphics title in After Effects would have to click through each layer of each composition to see which effects or masks are applied to each layer, then look at how things are parented, and even then it doesn't mean that they'd grasp what things like Null objects are. One of the big advantages of nodes is that they read like flow charts. It's very easy to open someone else's project and see what effects are being used and how things are connected with having to dig through layers of abstraction.
11:30 Resolve has *extend* *edit*, also on e and ripple *head/tail* (q and w on premiere), but needs to put on a shortcut and is called "start to playead" and "end to playhead" And I totally get you, premiere is made by programmers and lately by a marketing department and Resolve is made by video editors 😊
Love this video... Great presentation. One thing, though - Nobody ever mentions Premiere Pro's ability to continuously play/loop around an edit while you are trimming it! That is priceless to me. Otherwise, you make a trim, play it back, make a trim correction, play it again, blah, blah, blah. With Premiere, double click a cut point, press spacebar, then use shortcuts to trim one (or five) frames at a time... all while hearing the results right away. This is particularly powerful for dialogue trimming. Loose a breath from the outgoing, pick up a breath on the incoming. Can't find that on Resolve, or Final Cut (Avid has done it for years!). By the way, I change the pre - post rolls to one second in the preferences, otherwise each playback loop is way too long. Hope this was helpful.
Resolves shortcut keys to trim to the end or start of the play head are shift + ] and shift + [ respectfully. I'm pretty sure it ripple trims it, I'd have to double check.
Thanks for commenting, you and a few others have brought this to our attention and we are a little sad we did not catch this sooner. Thanks for your assistance
These videos are incredibly helpful, thank you so much! Literally, the first PPro tutorial I ever saw was Jordan's 5-part Ultimate PPro Tutorial series. The production value, entertainment/information balance, and quality are all top notch. I truly cannot understand how the Motion Array tutorials don't get 10 times the views!
@@MotionArrayTutorials Hi, I have an intermediate laptop (Intel Core i7) and I NEED something like PROXYS to work. Is DaVinci able to do something like this? If so, I switch today. BIG THANKS!
@@david_arga If you go into the 'Playback' menu at the top of the screen you have an option to use the 'Proxy Mode' tool and It's essentially like Premiere Pro's preview quality adjustor.
12:51 There is a shortcut for ripple delete the start or end of the clip in DaVinci Resolve it is Ctrl + Shift + [ for the start and Ctrl + Shift + ] for the end of the clip. I know that it requires you to use your both hands, but I would argue that with resolve you use less mouse while editing. So, generally, using both of your hands is not a problem.
@@MotionArrayTutorials Actually i changed ripple start and ripple end to the keys y and x so that you can ripple delete with the left hand on the left side of the keyboard...handy huh?
I never used Premiere, but I started with cyberlink powerdirector, then when I saw Davinci Resolve I switched to it and I am more than happy. For mostly editin yt videos, free version is enough :).
11:45 you want "trim - ripple - start to play head/end to play head" one thing I "don't like" is how davinci calls things a little differently to premiere, which makes sense, but there's hidden shortcuts that are there, they just have different names and approaches.
This has convinced me to: 1. Upgrade from Resolve 15 to 16 2. Stick with Davinci Resolve (also I'm a poor boi so free version for me) Thanks a lot for the vid, was very insightful!
This is the BEST comparison I've seen yet! TY :) After 20 years, I've left Adobe for GOOD! Moved over to DaVinci Resolve 16 Studio in January and love it. Never going back... ever!! All that money I use to spend with Adobe, I put towards new equipment now, and it feels so good! I own CS6 so I can still do image editing but purchased LUMINAR & AURORA HDR were I like to work with my RAW files. It's easy to get Pro results with a few clicks and give me new ideas for new Projects. Cheers 🍻
Excellent video. I find that many of the "we left Premiere" or "Resolve is the greatest video editor since sliced bread" videos are also commercials for you to buy their FX packages that they made in Fusion. I think many realize that Fusion is quite complex and most users will never figure out how to fully utilize it on their own. If anything, Resolve is the undisputed winner in price.
So - use DaVinci Resolve, with After Effects, Adobe Premiere + Audition as a backup if you can't find how to do something in it or want to use more premade templates. Then for stable editing import all of that into Resolve again.
Having used Vegas for years, upgrading to the free Davinci Resolve.. Couldn't be happier. It feels so simple and homey. Resolve is a damn good software - for free.
I use DaVinci Resolve in my laptop, and it still runs decently. I love using DaVinci Resolve, it was very easy to use for me. Once I get my PC built, I might buy the Studio version.
This is the first comparison video I have seen that didn't just feel like bashing Premiere for 15 minutes. THANK YOU! Potentially moving to Resolve from Premiere feels like breaking up with a girlfriend for me lmao, so thank you for being professional here. Love to Premiere AND Resolve
Davinci developers are years ahead and have actual passion and motivation for what they do. Adobe devs hate their lives. Its the only explanation for delivering beta versions as official releases to their paying customers.
I have an i7 7th Gen and a 1060 gc. And this obviously works no good using the Adobe Premier as I've tried it for couple of months. Hearing Davinci works both on CPU and GC is a sweet spot. So yeah I'm switching!!! Thanks for the great vid!! Please work on that tutorial for us.. Have mercy! :D
Solid content. Thanks for your very honest opinion and facts on both tools. Just the familiarity of Premiere, After Effects and Audition is stopping me from making the jump. I use Resolve to grade everything using a XML file. I need to just try moving over.
One thing you mentioned around 12:00 about the playhead ripple delete in premiere is also present in Resolve, it just doesn't have a shortcut mapped to it. It's called Ripple Start to Playhead and Ripple End to Playhead. Just config the shortcuts and be happy
One area you didn't cover is audio synching for multiple clips. Premiere is extremely limited here; you can synch any number of individual clips vertically (meaning they all cover the same general footage), but if you have a 'master' clip that covers a full event, with multiple 2nd or 3rd camera clips taken at various times over the same event, you're out of luck without a 3rd party solution like Pluraleyes. Any chance Resolve has a more elegant solution?
True, that starting point will definitely make a difference. While we get the overall point of your statement, we do think there's also a point to which the reverse is true as well that all users will have a pre-disposition to layers, seeing that Resolve uses layers for the overall editing process prior to jumping into Fusion or Color workflow. Not a statement against using nodes, we just think there's also something to be said for how they're more similar to the primary editing process.
Just a note because I wasn't sure if you say this in the video, half resolution is not in fact a proxy in DaVinci Resolve. Instead you have to optimize the footage in order for it to be an actual proxy. In fact if you enable half or quarter resolution, it will disable proxies if you have "optimized" the footage.
Thanks Ben! It's unfortunate we did not catch this sooner but thank you for bringing it to our attention, we are trying to see if we can place a note or indication that this information is indeed as you've described it. Cheers!
Each honest comparison (like yours - which is great btw) has to admit that both Resolve and Premiere Pro have their individual merits and strong points as well as some flaws and issues as well. So there is much room for personal preference. BUT you mentioned one point that is IMHO a very accurate description of DaVinci Resolve: each and every function seems to be designed by people that work each and every day with their own software and not so much by a computer programmer or software designer...
The quality of this video was amazing with great colors and sharpness even when watching on 480 resolution on my iPhone. I noticed that sometimes when exporting from different software, a video may be sharper when using premiere compared to final cut pro. I was wondering if this video was edited and exported with Davinci Resolve or Premiere Pro?
Hi VuTopia, this video was edited and exported from Premiere Pro. We know what you mean and it's something we'd love to dive into to find the answer to as well
Don't forget that you have to render all your proxies in a massive long queue, so they don't always save that much time if you've a lot of footage and a slow render speed.
I hear a lot of great things about DaVinci, thing is... I've become so good and fast with the Premiere/After Effects workflow (and the money it generates me) that I'm not ready to give DaVinci a good run (at least for a month) to see if it's worth if for me, especially as it comes to having the benefit of Dynamic Link between Premiere and After Effects. For now I'll stick with Pr/AE but I'll definitely keep the DaVinci option open.
yup, you will definitly miss after effects BUT resolve is so much better than premiere. For example stabilisation, for any normal stabilisation resolve is just superior. If you have a good Graphics cards it is pressing a button, waiting 10sec and then allready watch your 1min 4k clip back with perfect stabilisation. Also color grading is just a dream, too with audio, way better on resolve. Bigest downside of resolve: Plugins, there are soo many invaluable plugins for ae, premier and co.
Awesome comparison! Glad you mentioned the ability to find online resources for tutorials, especially effects, as a consideration because that is often overlooked when choosing an NLE.
Hey dude... I noticed that your talking head was shot in 24 fps...but your motionarray animation intros are playing at 60 fps in all of your previous videos... (Like in this video: How To Create Motion Blur In Premiere Pro) How did you showed two different frame rates in one single video??
fedor3000 beat us to the punch 😁 a great way to mix frame rates is to export at the rate of your highest fps clips, so 60fps in that case. This can be a mixed bag but in general works because 24fps on a 60fps timeline still looks like 24fps whereas 60fps on a 24fps timeline will not.
@@MotionArrayTutorials Thanks for replying, but when I was changing resolution while watching your video in YT, there was no 60p indicator. How can that be possible?

Another great video! I've appraised my own situation, and have made the switch to DaVinci Resolve 16. For me, I was never able to wrap my head around After Effects, never was able to comprehend "expressions"; in short, tutorials for AE, were over my head within two or three minutes, so I figured Fusion's node structure could be no worse! I probably won't be able to wrap my head around it either. Fortunately, I hope I can depend on you and your company to make great graphic packages (and more of them) in DaVinci fusion!
Thanks Keith! We're so happy you liked the video, and good luck with the switch to DaVinci Resolve! We hope you really enjoy the process 😁 as DaVinci Resolve's user base continues to increase we are hoping to continue building our catalog of Resolve Templates and Macros to help with projects 😁
I will look forward to following you, as you have been one of the best instructors for AE; I sure I will continue learning from you in DaVinci Resolve's Fusion.
Just a quick jump in! If you have a pre-touchbar macbook (like MacBoo Pro 2015), you will meet HW(CPU and GPU) requirments of Davinci, but not for Premiere. What machine you have might influence your decision on what to use...

I imported, edited, and exported it, but during the exporting process.. "DaVinci Resolve 16 Has Quit Unecpectedly, send crash report?" and so I did lol
actually started editing in resolve 1 and a half years ago. yes learning fusion is a bit difficult but once you get the hang of it its pretty easy and intuitive. one month back i tried Premiere and after effects but i didnt like it that much, it kept crashing and switching between two programmes over and over again, exporting to AE and then doing all the work and then exporting back to premiere is just a pain in the ass.
The only reason I started using Resolve was for Fusion, purely doing motion graphics for intros, stingers etc with zero focus on editing. Then when I needed to edit a project later it was super easy. Here is a point for you, imagine working on a project and the terrible stability issues corrupt your project rendering it useless.
@@MotionArrayTutorials No, no it was fairly balanced in my opinion, extremely well done and fair in all aspects. You even mentioned stability again at the end. Adobe lost me when they tried to force me to monthly payment. In light of the years most of us are using software, only Adobe wins. A pity, because generally the quality is amazing.
Man, how quickly people forget the Ps cost 500$ or 700$ alone and many of us just could not afford it. And everything else cost no less. So 55$ for all the apps is expensive? What world are you living in?
@@yrussq The real world. If you use MOST apps, REALLY use them on a monthly basis, go for it. In Davinci Resolve, you can do the ripple trim function: Trim start and end (Shift + [ and Shift + ]). Just need to be in trim editing mode else it won't trim. 10 years on premiere. Cant stand crashing anymore..
That's understandable. No one likes crashing.
Or the bugs. I was trying to edit for the first time in premiere (after using Sony Vegas for 3 years now) and I was facing timeline bugs. Thinking of jumping ship on resolve.
Time to move to Resolve! Just don’t download a beta. lol, get a final release version. Currently that’s v16.0
I've had this lil bitch Premiere crash on me SO MANY TIMES. It's not even funny. Thinking of switching to Resolve.
I've been on Premiere ~ 10 years too. Not too many problems lately. Maybe just lucky.
This was good! Its a bit ironical too.
Seeing how Davinci is being hailed in the video, I think it deserves a dedicated playlist on your channel. Most of your content is still geared towards Adobe Suit.
Please make some videos on:
- Davinci video/audio basics
- How to use templates, presents, LUTs
Just go through ANY video editing software comparison video on RUclips and you'll understand how many people want this. Long live Free Software!
Hi Swapnil, we actually have plans to create more content for DaVinci Resolve so hopefully soon you'll have plenty of content to enjoy for Resolve!
@@Coglitics you could just check their free version too.
Absolutely, looking back that would have been great to add.

Resolve has *extend* *edit*, also on e
and ripple *head/tail* (q and w on premiere), but needs to put on a shortcut and is called "start to playead" and "end to playhead"
And I totally get you, premiere is made by programmers and lately by a marketing department and Resolve is made by video editors 😊
Soo basically DaVinci Resolve is better? :)
Haha, that's one conclusion you can draw 😁
@@MotionArrayTutorials Hi, I have an intermediate laptop (Intel Core i7) and I NEED something like PROXYS to work. Is DaVinci able to do something like this? If so, I switch today. BIG THANKS!
@@david_arga If you go into the 'Playback' menu at the top of the screen you have an option to use the 'Proxy Mode' tool and It's essentially like Premiere Pro's preview quality adjustor.

Much better.
Interesting, thanks for bringing this up! Cheers!
Thanks for the insight! Cheers!
11:45 you want "trim - ripple - start to play head/end to play head" one thing I "don't like" is how davinci calls things a little differently to premiere, which makes sense, but there's hidden shortcuts that are there, they just have different names and approaches.
This has convinced me to:
1. Upgrade from Resolve 15 to 16
2. Stick with Davinci Resolve
(also I'm a poor boi so free version for me)

After 20 years, I've left Adobe for GOOD!
Cheers 🍻
Cool! Thanks for sharing Richard! We hope the journey with Resolve 16 is Stellar!
I edit for a post-house and we use Premiere, Resolve and occasionally even Final Cut. I like all 3. lol. These are good times to be a video editor.
Cool to hear Adam! Indeed, competition and options are great for us as consumers and users in the industry 😁
Downloading now… great featurette. Thank you so much for taking the time to make it. Cheers, Mark.
Awesome! So glad it was helpful!
Interesting assessment Alex, those are some good points to consider
So - use DaVinci Resolve, with After Effects, Adobe Premiere + Audition as a backup if you can't find how to do something in it or want to use more premade templates. Then for stable editing import all of that into Resolve again.
A very interesting workflow
You dropped this on the day I have to decide whether or not to renew my Adobe plan 🤯
Haha, we hope that's a good thing and not a problem 😅
Having used Vegas for years, upgrading to the free Davinci Resolve.. Couldn't be happier. It feels so simple and homey. Resolve is a damn good software - for free.
Sweet! So glad to hear Revan! Glad you're having a better experience at a $0 price! 😄

Solid content. Thanks for your very honest opinion and facts on both tools. Just the familiarity of Premiere, After Effects and Audition is stopping me from making the jump. I use Resolve to grade everything using a XML file. I need to just try moving over.
Hi Samuel! Thanks for the comment. We know exactly what you mean, familiarity can be a big sticking point. All the best!
Keep in mind that Adobe has a cancellation fee (which can reach hundred dollars+) if you pay for the annual plan (which is paid monthly)
Very true, thanks for the reminder Remous!
One thing you mentioned around 12:00 about the playhead ripple delete in premiere is also present in Resolve, it just doesn't have a shortcut mapped to it. It's called Ripple Start to Playhead and Ripple End to Playhead. Just config the shortcuts and be happy
Davinci's timeline also reminds me of Vegas.
Interesting, we have not heard that before 😄
Im so fond of the vegas timeline, im happy davinci was a similar design to it
The Rewinder I almost bought Vegas yesterday but literally just started using davinci
If you start with "Fusion" and not with "After Effect" then the nodes may seem even more logical than the layers
True, that starting point will definitely make a difference. While we get the overall point of your statement, we do think there's also a point to which the reverse is true as well that all users will have a pre-disposition to layers, seeing that Resolve uses layers for the overall editing process prior to jumping into Fusion or Color workflow. Not a statement against using nodes, we just think there's also something to be said for how they're more similar to the primary editing process.
my system is win 10 pro
i3-4rd gen
gtx 1050
8gb ram
can this support davinci?
Just a note because I wasn't sure if you say this in the video, half resolution is not in fact a proxy in DaVinci Resolve. Instead you have to optimize the footage in order for it to be an actual proxy.
In fact if you enable half or quarter resolution, it will disable proxies if you have "optimized" the footage.
Thanks Ben! It's unfortunate we did not catch this sooner but thank you for bringing it to our attention, we are trying to see if we can place a note or indication that this information is indeed as you've described it. Cheers!

@@MotionArrayTutorials then, as a visual effects student I might benefit from the stand-alone Edition.
Thank you for thid review. Im considering Da Vinci but difficult to leave Adobe with all its tutorial guides...

That's a good thing to remember, thanks Phil. Always seems to vary project to project for us personally
We're so glad you liked the video and found it helpful! Cheers!
Hey dude...
I noticed that your talking head was shot in 24 fps...but your motionarray animation intros are playing at 60 fps in all of your previous videos... (Like in this video: How To Create Motion Blur In Premiere Pro)
How did you showed two different frame rates in one single video??
err...by simply exporting the video in the higher framerate of the two? ‾\_(ツ)_/‾
fedor3000 beat us to the punch 😁 a great way to mix frame rates is to export at the rate of your highest fps clips, so 60fps in that case.

It's all about pulling out the right tools for the job you are doing. Sometimes that might be Premiere, sometimes that might be Resolve :D
Just a quick jump in! If you have a pre-touchbar macbook (like MacBoo Pro 2015), you will meet HW(CPU and GPU) requirments of Davinci, but not for Premiere. What machine you have might influence your decision on what to use...

actually started editing in resolve 1 and a half years ago. yes learning fusion is a bit difficult but once you get the hang of it its pretty easy and intuitive. one month back i tried Premiere and after effects but i didnt like it that much, it kept crashing and switching between two programmes over and over again, exporting to AE and then doing all the work and then exporting back to premiere is just a pain in the ass.
So, someone would be making good money if they did a whole lot of Fusion tutorials on RUclips?..
It's possible, hard to say
The only reason I started using Resolve was for Fusion, purely doing motion graphics for intros, stingers etc with zero focus on editing. Then when I needed to edit a project later it was super easy. Here is a point for you, imagine working on a project and the terrible stability issues corrupt your project rendering it useless.
We hope it didn't come across that we don't like fusion, or that we think Adobe products are better. Cheers
@@MotionArrayTutorials No, no it was fairly balanced in my opinion, extremely well done and fair in all aspects. You even mentioned stability again at the end. You're not alone Sven. Many share your thoughts. Perhaps time will change things, but for not Resolve is getting better and better
@@shorerocks Wtf are you talking about here, man? If you can't justify paying 70$ for 2 professional grade apps for 2 month then how did you expect to justify the one time 1400$ payment for them? This is ridiculous.
@@yrussq Ah, I never did. Because of the extreme price I had to restrict myself to the PS & PR Elements versions. A big compromise, but I made it work for me. These I used for over 10 years and upgrade every 2, 3 years. If you are not pro, wtf should I pay a pro price for a pro software I do not need? I once needed After Effects, and subbed for 1 month, paying once under 40 EUR, thank you and goodbye. For videio DaVinci Resolve is pro level even in the free version. It equals in every way Premiere. Color grading is a blast, sadly Resolve is not as intuitive as others on the market. Yet. Since video is the only software I would like to use more often during the year why should I pay hundreds of dollars each year - for the next 5, 10, 20 (?) years?
In Davinci Resolve, you can do the ripple trim function:
Trim start and end (Shift + [ and Shift + ]). Just need to be in trim editing mode else it won't trim.
Also, the Extend Edit function is available, select the edit point and select the Extend Edit function from the menubar, and I think the shortcut is 'e'
