- Опубликовано: 25 июл 2024
- We’ve officially reached the eighth generation of Volkswagen Golf GTI. And, even though the iconic hot hatch is about to turn 40, it’s really just hitting its stride. Poised. Practical. Potent. You get healthy efficiency from the 2.0-liter turbo, plenty of space for stuff and four adults. But you also get plenty of standard comforts and a healthy dose of driving enjoyment whenever you turn the wheel. What a car!
In this video, I take you through the car, show you what features are offered and how they work. And then I take you on a drive to get a sense of how well it handles, the quality of the ride, and the overall experience.
Love the VW GTI? Here's a nice way to show it! (with affiliate link):

Check out my pure driving impressions of the GTI here: ruclips.net/video/Uty-JoOXrVw/видео.html
That type of joy when you were launching this GTI - that type of emotion cannot be faked and was similar to my reactions when I test drove one myself. These vehicles are so much fun! Excellent review, one of the best I’ve seen about the GTI on youtube.
Thank you so much! And 100 percent correct, I did not fake the reaction.
I think the bottom line for the MK8 is : Dont overspend. Tried the GTI with and without the DCC and the R, from a non-tracking perspective there is no way to go wrong at their pricepoint, you ll be happy (if you can find your marks with the infotainment system😂). Great review!!!
Totally agree! I love what you get for the price point. And Thank you so much for the compliment!
Is 35k to much to spend for the 2023 gti s with the Manual trans?
Purchased a 2023 s a few months back. It has some frustrating electronics but the drive is great. I appreciate you validating my purchase 😅
Had many Golf GTIs over the years, an R & now a GTi Clubsport. They are simply wonderful cars - fun, fun, fun 😆 You get room, functionality, reasonable fuel efficiency & really trustworthy sportiness. When you throw it round a corner, it grips. These cars are sophisticated & mature yet still fun. If you can use a smartphone & tablet, then within a week you will be using the infotainment system without any problems. There are lots of tips, trucks, shortcut videos on the net. Thanks for a nice review 👍
Appreciate reading your multiple ownership perspective.
Another hatchback that delivers great driving fun is the 2023 Acura Integra, check out my review here: ruclips.net/video/GZun-B-NTBA/видео.html
Great Video. I love the GTI since my 2012 6-speed. Most fun car I’ve had. I’m tired of all these other reviews who constantly bash this and that and say the infotainment is awful. Honestly I can deal with it, heat my seats, put on some music be able to change drive modes. You’ve sold me on an s I always want the plaid seats but I’m going to get a 6 speed. Thank you again
Glad you liked my video! And, yeah, infotainment has its place, but there’s way more to enjoying a car.
Great review! Very clear and concise… I’m looking at one of these up in Canada - a base model with a stick. Love the feel of the way it drives - stuck to the road and solid.
Thank you very much! Yeah, I'd definitely prefer that manual as well. But the DSG is a good dual-clutch box. Hope you can get it. Have fun!
Had an Mk6 and it was the best car I’ve ever had! Bought it new in the S trim and never had problems with it, looking to purchase another one next year in the S trim!! Excellent video!!! 😊
Thank you so much!
Great review.
I’m on my 3rd day of ownership & gotta add that the adaptive cruze control at low city speeds is awesome.
More reviewers need to include this feature in their car reviews.
VW got has done a great job.
Thank you!
Your review almost on point ( traction control can be switched off from main screen no need to go in to the all the options you pointed)
Thank you for a wonderful review! I just bought a 22 GTI S M/T- delivering this week and I am ecstatic! It’s my second GTI-Once you have experienced one you can’t go back! I had a MK6 M/T 5 years ago, and loved every minute of it. Safe to say I’m obsessed 😍
You are very welcome! And, yeah, the GTI is a blast to drive, and very useful too.
You'll absolutely love your new Mk8.
I bought mine late March of this yr. And Everytime I need to go somewhere, I'm kinda hype😀
Let's take my car!! And.... we're Gone🔥
Good job....I have read on other RUclips videos that the 2.0T is "underrated" from the stated "241Hp/273 Torque" and when run on a dyno the true HP/Torque is 245-249HP and ~295+ torque....and BTW- real world MPG testing highway cruising ( @75mph) results in 37mpg on regular fuel.....
Thank you so much! And, yeah, that's entirely possible. VW may very well be protecting themselves, as every engine will vary ever so slightly. So, perhaps, the least powerful one will still make 241hp/273 lb-ft. No matter, it's a fantastic engine, with strong pull through a wide rev range.
Nice review, thumbs up.
Thank you!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!
@Robin: that was a really great review. You've touched on everything that makes this car special even in the base trim. I saw a white GTI 40th Anniversary edition in the showroom with a manual. If i didn’t have 3 cars already...well, maybe i can get rid of one...again, that was great and I'll subscribe.
Thank you so much!
Very good review 👏. I got my SE trim, and I'm loving it.
Thank you very much! And glad you're loving yours!
Getting mine this week, what’s your opinion on the controls?
If I drove more, I’d have gotten the 5:11 SE for the keyless entry, built in navigation & more voice commands (from what I understand).
I love the review, great quality. One minus, no engine cover. My mk7.5 engine looks so much neater. One big plus, there are vents in the rear for the passengers. Many of the newer, more costly cars don’t have them, but VW does !Living in so. Florida, cooling the rear passengers is important. Thanks, RickGTI….. 🌴
Thank you for the wonderful compliment and the insights of an owner!
Hey good review though man! I hope you become more popular
Edit:..........did u just dis the dsg?? I dont think u understand what the dsg is because thats one of the biggest things going for the gti/gli. That is an incredibly capable tranmission only really found in very expensive cars. Yes the manual is more fun and i sometimes find myself wanting the manual. But iknow that the dsgs performance is iincomprable. Its way faster and reliably holds way more power. 400hp in the dsg- no problem, 400hp on the manual-definently problems.... even just 300hp and the manual clutch struggles. The dsg is realistically close too a half second quicker, and is definently alot more fun and engaging then a traditional torque converter. Dont hate the dsg.
Btw this is coming from someone who always drove manual except for my truck which is torque converter. The dsg is awsome!!!! Service it every 40k and it shall provide remarkable service too u:)
Yes it is a weebit heavier... but thats litterally less of a difference then the sunroof on the higher trim...aka thers almost no difference😂 the difference there only slightly effects body roll; it actrually benefits the acceleration because well the dsg is way faster so😂🫡
Bought mine new in 2019, GTI s, dsg. Wouldn’t give it up anything else. Now there are none available, US, and Canada. Where have all the VW’s gone ? Great video and review. Thanks, RickGTI….. 🌴
Thank you! And enjoy your 2019!
I have the same exact color and package. I love it. The only thing I don't like is the OEM wheels. Base model GTI is a bargain in this market, if you could get it MSRP. It took me couple months to get it without any markup. I've been driving mine for about 6 months. I've only seen 5 mk8 GTIs on the road, and only 2 Rs. They are still rare.
I admire your patience. Yeah, the value here is fantastic.
Ive got the exact same car, but pure white
Btw the 13.2 inch gauge cluster screen is wayyy nicer then the base one. I personally hate the new base screen. The old analogue one was way nicer looking. But the 13.2 inch is nicer then all of them!
How are the reflector led headlights on the S model?? We still have them on the base model in Canada.
They seemed to work fine for me. I hope that helps.
You Gotta Loved The Volkswagen Golf GTI!!
It's a great car for enthusiasts. 👍
What is your daily driver in background in blue there? Can't quite make it out....
That's a 1st gen Honda HR-V. And not mine.
Sun Roof and Harmon Kardon is a must SE is the way to go.
Agreed. I also really like the new leather seats which was a big reason I opted for the SE. and the sunroof.
Dont like sunroofs, just a weak point to me..i never look up...do like the Kardon system though
Many reviewers don't like the HK sound system?
Theres alot of things from the mk7 that would make this new gen soo much nicer! Steering wheel, cockpit and climate controls are the things that really kill it for me.
Is your opinion from long term driving , the internet, or just test drives? I should be signing for mine in a couple of days. In my experience, I think that I’ll get used to it pretty quickly. After about a week of driving, I stop adjusting things in my vehicles. Example, I’ve only adjusted my steering wheel once, and only adjust the seat after my tdi had trips to the dealer. My wife won’t drive manuals so memory seats aren’t necessary. I’m absolutely letting my inner 5 year old go loose on the screens the first couple weeks, but the main stuff has short cuts or dedicated inputs like the front and rear defrost. The heated steering wheel. My fan stays off or 3, or 4 all year here in Minnesota. Android atom voice control works very well to.
The interface is actually really intuitive and easy. I’m a 58 year old female who hates tech. If I find it easy & intuitive, young guys certainly will.
Just seems it would be so incredibly frustrating to use the touchscreen to make almost all settings/adjustments. Taking eyes off the road constantly. I love the car otherwise. Maybe 2024 will give us a few physical buttons? Fingers crossed.
I’m older. It’s fine. There’s short cuts for most everything. The entire interface is well designed. And the capacitive buttons are great. I have no idea what people have against them.
How good or bad is the sound system?
I didn't use it much, to be honest. But, the times I did, I found clean sounding with reasonable range.
Decent
Fixed headrests suck for tall drivers. I sat in one of these and it hits kind of low on my head, more at the top of my neck so it might not prevent whiplash it might break my neck at the 1st vertebra. I have a 2015 Golf that has an adjustable headrest and it is fine. This feature is the biggest disappointment I found in the new model.
Absolutely. Autobahn trim GTI’s sort this out, but those are healthy chunk more expensive too.
@@viewsonvehicles How? They also don’t have an adjustable headrest.
I enjoy this video . I have one question would you buy a Mazda 3 Turbo hatchback for 33,000 brand new or would you get the GTI in base model form. The Mazda 3 comes with all-wheel drive leather interior Bose audio a sunroof for the same money as a base model GTI that has none of those things
Ultimately, the VW drives a bit better. But the Mazda is really strong and really close. Honestly, I'd probably go Mazda, even though it has a solid rear axle. Here's my review of that by the way: ruclips.net/video/g-5boxAFn0c/видео.html
@@viewsonvehicles thanks for the input I've been debating on the Mazda or the GTI they're so closely match but ultimately very different cars
@@viewsonvehicles I had to look at it from a value standpoint for 33,000 who's going to give me the bigger bang for the buck and I think it's going to be Mazda
@@viewsonvehicles and I have to look at it from a quality standpoint and who ultimately makes the better car reliability is key for me as well
@@GLI_1701 yeah, I think that’s fair.
Yea i reallyyyyy hate the new base gauge cluster screen! Looks like booty hole. I highly recommend the larger 13.2 inch. I have it in my gli and its awsome.
The 10” cluster comes in all Golf GTI/R trims
Lane centering is activated when you engage smart cruise and will center you in the lane and navigate curves. Come on man your review was good but get acquainted with the tech before reviewing. Also the drop down menu to access the traction system you missed that as well.
The S is still a push button start, correct?
Yeah, I show you where right here, the link is time stamped ruclips.net/video/NdW8yorMDgM/видео.html
You remind me of Jenna Bush.
hmmm .. 77lbs is made up by how quick it shifts. still a faster 0-60 vs the 6spd.
Have you broken down & gotten one yourself? 😊
I've since driven the Acura Integra Type S, that's the one at the top of my list these days: ruclips.net/video/pSez9wgh_Vk/видео.htmlsi=DrJ6c7C6737rhkzz
DSG > Weak puppy piss clutch- ( if you even look at it wrong it slips) this is coming from a 3 generation GTI owner- They have been complete shit even on the golf R- its always the first thing you have to upgrade asap-
Wish it was RWD
I agree, here's a great RWD alternative: ruclips.net/video/mvF6fjzA0uQ/видео.htmlsi=On9CNo815JXE60g9
How are comfortable in the back seat???? Your knees are LITERALLY touching the driver's seat.... try out that back seat for a road trip and you will find out how much space you really have....
