Apparently from what I've read, he was an interior designer and this house was specifically built to show case his designs hence the reason most of it doesn't work, for show only, ect.

Those weird chairs are "courting benches"; when a young couple was dating the parents didn't want any hanky-panky going on. The couple could sit on the bench & talk, but anything past a peck on the cheek would be obvious, uncomfortable and completely awkward ;p

I used to live down the street from there, the weirdnesses of the house are mainly part of a cooling system, the house draws in air through the cellar and up through the house in an updraft (and through the rooms via the little doors/ windows etc) to cool the house during the summer.
NC doesn't stay that warm in winter so I'm sure some of the fireplaces were originally functional, but may have been sealed off at some point for a more modern furnace sometime in the early 1900s?

Max Zomboni Yes they do I've seen plenty of videos on RUclips where they let them film I'm sure they can make an exception and it sounds like ole carpet bagger would love that type of place.

That's exactly what I kept thinking the entire video was that Jacob needs to see the Winchester House. He thinks this house is stranger then he's going to be really impressed by the Winchester Mansion as it is "THE" Mystery House! But I'll definitely dub Korner's Folly as the Winchester Mansion of the East Coast.

Actually all the fireplaces can work with the ventilation shafts and a series of tunnels under the house, keeping warm and cool air flowing. I think he was showing off his decoration skills with the interior though.

that is an odd house. when I was a kid a friend of mine lived in an old Victorian style house. in it you would go up this grand staircase and the landing you came to instead of a wall in front of you there was an opening that was covered with a plate glass window! at one time you could walk through the opening to rooms in the back of the upstairs of the house. you would turn the corner go up three more stairs and up there were two locked room.the family who rented it could not get in rooms and the landlady lived in upstairs behind the glass wall! creepy!

This is a super cool house, although I can imagine trying to play hide and seek in it. Or getting lost in it if you were an overnight guest trying to find your way to the kitchen or the bathroom. And some of those rooms were downright claustrophobic! Still, though, I would LOVE to live in a place like that!

As for that "children's room" safety standards in the 1800s and early 1900s certainly weren't anything like they are now.
(my gran was born in 1908 and was playing with an iron functional toy stove and was allowed to put a coal in it to warm up cookies she'd made. Early "Easy bake oven"?)
