I read Neil Gaiman’s book “American Gods” about 10 years ago. Some of the events in that book take place at The House On The Rock. I just realized about a month ago as I was re-reading “American Gods” that The House is a real place! Now, I’m dying to visit there!
Same here. We read American Gods a long time ago and are huge Gaiman fans. When we realized that this place was close to us here in Chicago, we went right away. We’ve been a bunch now. It’s pretty awesome.
It’s awesome. The first time we went I was blown away. They have a gift shop at the end, with some souvenir stuff. But, they also have a couple of books that they wrote on the place and a documentary. I bought all of them. We knew of the place from Neil Gaiman’s books, so had to check it out. We go multiple times a year now. Have you been?
I was trying to describe house on the rock to someone recently and found it hard to do (haven’t been since I was a kid). This video captures it beautifully!
That’s awesome! Thanks! Yeah we love that place. We’re in Chicago so it’s not that far away, but I’m always surprised how many people here have no idea what it is. We tell everyone to go.
Visited with my parents at least a couple of times as a kid growing up. Personally, my favorite part of walking through the House was going through the Streets Of Yesteryear and looking in all the shop windows. Also really enjoyed the music room. If I remember right, there was also a Chamber Of Horrors exhibit, which my Mom at first wouldn't allow me to look at. After pestering her, she finally gave in. Remembered it showed the ways people were tortured and killed through the ages, such as by the Guillotine, the Rack, etc. Mannequins were used to show the people being tortured/killed. Some had red paint on them representing blood, which was gory to a boy. Wonder if this exhibit is still on display? Overall, I enjoyed my visits, and am glad the House is still open and operating. Sadly, not too far from this was another tourist location, called Little Norway, which is no longer operating, with the buildings either torn down or moved.
The Chamber of Horrors exhibit isn't still on display, but they may have moved it to the Halloween exhibits they do. We unfortunately haven't made it during that time yet (Halloween is our favorite time of the year). We'll try to make it up there this season and see if they include it then. Thanks for watching!
It’s one of our favorite places! We try to make it a couple times a year, since we live right here near Chicago. It’s only a few hour drive for us. We actually just took a friend who had never been last weekend.
I’m so glad I stop by here to learn more of the house of rock! There were so many interesting artifacts to look while on the tour. I really loved the orchestra. That was so cool.
I'm absolutely captivated by the serene beauty of Wisconsin that you've presented in this video - it's like a hidden oasis of peace. Thanks for highlighting the unexpected tranquility; it's inspiring me to visit and experience it first-hand.
Oh my goodness! There is so much to see - I could lose myself in that place. I liked the animatronics - the fortune teller and the band. Also loved the fancy carousel.
The whale in the Heritage of the Sea is INCREDIBLE. That and the organ room are really hard to describe the feeling you get when you first see them. It takes a moment fro your brain to register what's going on there. We've been a few times now, and just love taking our time and really looking closer at the stuff there. You'll notice something new every time.
Same. I love hanging out there. I recently started shooting film and want to take a couple cameras up there soon. I brought an old 35mm KS-2 last time I was there but the shutter jammed the minute I walked in. Snapped a shot of the vase outside and that was it. I was pretty bummed. But I just picked up an old Argus Seventy Five, a 620 film camera from the early 50’s that I’ve been shooting with. I think it would be perfect for that place.
It’s an incredible place hidden away. If you’re a fan of the author Neil Gaiman, he uses this location in the book American Gods. It was also filmed at in the television series that was made from the book. Such a cool place. You really have to go to get the full experience. The whale room is crazy and takes your brain a minute to process.
It really is one of the coolest and unique places you'll ever go to. And there are music machines and other mechanical devices throughout the entire place. When you get tickets to enter the House, you get some coins. You can also buy more from vending machines scattered throughout the House and grounds. Those you can use to play the different music boxes and devices. It's a complete sensory overload.
This brings back some great memories for me! I went to House on the Rock about 25-30 years ago when I lived in Wisconsin, but had forgotten so many of these great details about the house. I mostly remembered the stained glass and some odd structures. This makes me want to go back and see it again. I had totally forgotten about the Streets of Yesterday, The heritage of the sea, music of yesterday and the carousel. It's been so fun watching this and bringing back all those memories!
I tell everyone around us that they should visit the House. We're big Neil Gaiman fans, so we've read about it in the American Gods book for years now, so I guess we had previous knowledge about it, but I'm surprised how many people that live here have never heard of it. When people ask what it's like there, I tell them they have to experience the place. As nice as it is having videos on it, nothing can do it justice. The Heritage of the Sea and the Organ Room's are mind blowing. I'm glad we keep bringing up Wisconsin memories for you haha! This weekend we're actually heading up to Cave of the Mounds on Saturday and maybe Mount Horeb on Sunday. It's the Cave's anniversary on Memorial Day, and we love the troll hunt of Mount Horeb. So we thought those would be great videos to create.
You're welcome, thanks for watching! We love this place. We live in the Chicago area so it's not that bad of a drive for us, but we make it a day trip and on our way back get dinner at the Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb. We tell people all the time you have to go check the place out. There's really no where else like it.
This place is beautiful!! I loved all of the fountains! The more you watch thr more unexpected happens! What a super cool video! Most definitely liked, commented and subscribed for more great videos! Keep up the great work!
Thanks! We love the House on the Rock. It's one of the weirdest, coolest places you'll ever visit. There's so much to look at, and there's no order to it. So you're constantly surprised.
¡Gracias! Nos encanta visitarlo. Es uno de nuestros lugares favoritos aquí cerca de Chicago y tratamos de ir un par de veces al año. Nos encanta llevar a gente que nunca ha estado allí.
Really nice job with the way you filmed and edited this piece. We were just there for the Christmas Experience and it is a lot to take in. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you so much! We were trying to make it back up there for the Christmas Experience but couldn't find the time this year. We heard that and the Dark Side for Halloween are really cool. Next year we will try to make it. Thanks again for watching! We do a lot of random roadtrip and love checking new places out, so I figured I'd start taking my cameras and film where we go.
We love The House on the Rock and tell everyone they should go. We try to make it a couple times a year. The Halloween setup is coming soon, so we'll check that out.
It's really one of the coolest places to visit. It's one of those places where your brain has to constantly play catch up with your eyes. There's sooooo much going on and things to see. The whale and organ rooms will never have justice on camera. You have to experience them in person. It's amazing.
Such a beautiful video! Thank you. This is one of my favorite places in the whole world, and has been since the field trips this gen x’er experienced as a kid. It has changed so much, and all for the better. It is just so surreal and weird that Neil Gaiman used the big carrousel as an inter dimensional portal in American Gods. There is a fun, brief video Starz made about that facet of the series they built out of his books. THotR is like the trippy, gothic older relative of one of my other favorite places, St. Louis’ The City Museum. A fun fact I only recently learned is that, while many of the dioramas and displays read as/ appear like museum installations, the posted placards of factoids are, in fact, entirely bullsh!t. This just makes me love the place even more. I’d wager that the drive to and from the location is equally as unusual and beautiful as the House, in its own bucolic, Wisconsin way.
Thanks so much! I love how it came out in the edit. I wasn't sure at first with the music I cut to, because it's not the typical upbeat song and doesn't always hit on beat, but it works so well I think with the subject. Yeah we're huge Neil Gaiman fans and remember reading about this place in American Gods. Back maybe about 12 years ago we saw him do a live reading of some of his shorter stories, and just ramblings. He talked about the bizarreness and his fascination with the House on the rock. So when we moved to Chicago and realized it wasn't that far of a drive, we made it a priority to get up there. I feel like every time we go, we see or learn something new. There's just way too much to take in in one day. And yes, the drive up there is nice. If you take the back way, which is what we always try to do. The highway is quicker, but then you miss the hidden gems that are tucked away. There's a hotel near there that we'd like to check out sometime. Each room is a different theme.
@@lesserknownadventures If you have kids, visit the City Museum as soon as possible. There are passageways that only small bodies can access. My 11 yo loves it. Bring your knee pads. We do, we have a 9 year old, so that'd be perfect. It's great because she's started catching the travel bug, and now during the week she's started asking where we're going next. Granted, it's because we usually let her pick something up from each place we go, so we have accumulated a mass of stuffed animals, but she's still excited, so that's pretty cool. I'll check out Taliesin. - I see it's the Frank Lloyd Wright home. We've actually seen this place, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Definitely on the list.
Totally agree. we try to go a couple times a year. I love taking people there for their first time. The confused and blown away responses are the best. We haven't made it yet for the Halloween setup. Hoping to go this year for that.
I was reading this book called American Rapture by CJ Leede and the characters in the book stop by "the house on the rock". The bizarre yet unique description of this place captured my curiosity. From the rooms that are too small to stand in, to the instruments that play by themselves, to the big blue whale, the angels in the ceiling, the carousel it just sounds like a place out of a dream. I had to see it for myself that such a place existed and I would love to go there personally.... maybe with someone special as well. I know my dad would find such a place interesting if he were still alive to see it. The number of special places we have gone together. 🥲
It’s a super cool place. If you’re ever near Wisconsin in that area I highly recommend trying to stop. It’s just filled with so much odd and different things. We’ve never been to the Dells which is nearby too. We’re going to try and make it there someday.

You MUST, MUST see this place in person. Words, photos & videos can never do it justice. 100% unforgettable.
It's shown in the show also.
It looks like a dream.
You could say that! It's one of our favorite places to go and walkthrough. You notice something new every time.
Exactly. It looks and feels like a dream.
This man's vision is phenomenal to say the least 🌌🔥

I talked to a maintenence worker during a tour. He said he worked there over 20 years and every day, he sees something new
Just revisited as an adult. This was probably the source of weird dreams I’ve had throughout my life, and probably much of my creativity.
Same. I love hanging out there. I recently started shooting film and want to take a couple cameras up there soon. What a special place to visit!
The beehiuse looked special! That piano was special. Playing alone...
It looks pretty scary!

Well don't on the video. The music goes so well with it. What camera did you use for the low light? It's sharp 👍
Thanks! Yeah I loved the way the music track worked out. We always joke that when editing you spend most of your time just looking for music.
The camera on this video was the DJI Pocket 2. I had picked it up just before heading to the House. I like the camera, but you have to be really mindful of your walking and arm movement, as you can easily get bounce in your shots. I shoot with larger gimbals on hired work, so I'm pretty good at the "ninja walk" now. But I can still see the bounce in some of the shots. I do really like the movements though from this thing when done well. And it's so small. I just keep it in my pocket and it's always ready to go.
I know you said you shoot with the GoPro 11. I was torn between that and the Pocket 2 when I picked this up. I also have thought about trying the GoPro Max. I've seen some really cool use of the 360 footage. I have an Inta360 One, but wasn't too impressed with that. But the Max looks way better.
Better than paying 5 dollars for a video on their website.
What's the electricity bill like there!?
That’s funny. I actually thought the same thing the last time we were there. Those bulbs are NOT LED.
