Upon later realisation, I could have done better with the Soup Kitchens example. It was actually possible to recover them all with just 1 card. First recover the 2 relic as we rule both rabbit clearings at the start. Then recover the 1 relic because we still rule the adjacent rabbit clearing and lastly recover the 3 relic which forces a discard but allows us to pick up all 3 relics in 1 action and keep the bird for another action, perhaps a move.
I'm not sure your interpretation is correct here...
Going in order, you remove the relic first, than, in the same iteration, check if you should discard. As soon as you take the 2 relic, you no longer rule the clearing, and you'd have to discard the card and stop the action before attempting another. So, I see three valid options:
1. Take 1, then voluntarily stop,
2. Take 1, then 2, then discard,
3. Take 2, the discard.
Basically, I'm arguing that the count+discard happens after you take the relic, and not before (if it happened before, you wouldn't be able to take a high-value card at all unless you rule 3+ clearings). Am I missing something?
Great video! Love the quality and the detail for such a tricky action.
Great video. Just got the expansion and this vid Made me realise I’ve been hamstringing myself when playing the badgers. No wonder the bots were kicking my ass.
Solid stuff as always. This is a super tricky action. Well-deserving of its own video.
Just after a TTS game i had a fight about this exact stuff, you sure are a mind reader!
I'm noticing all the questions coming out from people just getting their expansions now and decided I needed to address certain things more thoroughly.
This was very helpful, thank you so much!
Thanks for making this video, I definitely played this wrong when I played them lol.
I played these guys for the first time over the last few days. Ouch, my brain.
So a few questions. Would you advise just dumping a lot of cards into the recover action to allow you to not have to worry about the cost and just get points? Also how would you rank the Keepers in play, I've been feeling like they have to little board presence to let them claim and protect the relics they need and tend to just get trapped in a corner and wiped. And finally, does the card you use to recover have to match the clearing your recovering from?
Yes you should try to get the retinue full of cards as quickly as possible with priority on bird cards in the first and last columns. The Keepers are very strong when played well but an aggressive table can snuff them easily so you need to try to recover Relics as quickly as possible. Don't leave them on the map where they can and will be targeted. The defensive ability isn't as good as it seems so try to recover a relic on the same turn you delve. Yes the card in the recover column must match the clearing of recovery.
Interesting video! Can you make a video on the different Moles strategies?
Another great video! Any chance you’ll be showing the other hirelings in how they work? My wife and I are getting better at them, but feel we have still a lot of questions on specific scenarios with them. Thanks again!
Yes, I will be doing my Hirelings video soon! I just got the hirelings pack yesterday!
I guess this is how I found out I'd been playing the Badgers wrong. I didn't even realise it was colum, not row, plus I thought that discarding a card meant you couldn't recover anymore relics that turn cause it ended that whole phase.
Shit no wonder I was so fuckin bad with them
Do you have to recover them lowest to highest? Let’s say I only rule one clearing. Can a take a 3 over a 2 and then lose the card?
At 3:38 we would have to throw away a bird relic? I'm still a little confused.
It would be a bird retinue card. There’s no such thing as a bird relic, looks like he just misspoke.
I misspoke, I meant bird card (from the retinue because we would be taking another recover action).
In that soup kitchen example would it make sense to take the 3 relic first so you wouldn’t have to discard any cards because the rest of the relics are 2 or lower?
You have the right idea but it would still require 2 separate cards in the Retinue to get all of them as soon as 1 relic was removed, the Badgers no longer rule that clearing so a 2 or higher would cost the card.
@@nitrorev What if you took the 2 relic first, then the 1 relic (shouldn't be any discard so far), then took the 3 and discarded retinue card?
@@gavinschoew8296 "Oh yea, it's all coming together."
@@gavinschoew8296 I could have possibly illustrated the example better by having 1 fewer cat in the clearing. Then it would have been possible to recover the 3 relic first, then the 2 and then the 1 in just 1 recover action.
@@nitrorev yeah I think Gavin have a good point. If you have your rabbit card in your recover section of your retinue, and you crafted soup kitchen. You take your rabbit card to recover the jewellery (2pts) first because your soup kitchen card let you have the control on 2 rabbits clearing. After, always with the same rabbit card you recover your tablet (1pts) in second because your rule 1 rabbit clearing in the corner in the down left corner. After you still use your same rabbit card to recover your tablet ( 3pts). For sure, you discard your rabbit card in the end.So , in this exemple, you score more point by recovering the jewellery (2pts) before the tablet (1pts) like Gavin said ! Thanks you for this awesome video :) I was thinking it was necessary to have badgers warriors in the clearing you want to recover :)
Could you maybe make a short or even post on the community tab how to set up the relics on each of the maps thanks
Oh, that's a great idea. I'll do that soon as it's a common point of confusion.
Nitroooo you still have not made the guides for the 4 base factions.
Please pretty please.
I am on it. I have been putting off the base game for a long time because it's weirdly harder to teach than the factions since factions require so much prior knowledge like simply terminology and concepts. I will do it sooner than later!
@@nitrorev Huzzah! That’s great news.
those videos will help so much in introducing this game to more players. Waiting eagerly.
Wait, I believed that when we ahve the wording "matching clearing" it means that matches with the card. So in the example presented with the Lost City, you count clearings you rule that match the card in use, not the clearing of execution. Is not like that?
Nope, otherwise it would say "match the card" but it specifically says "clearing". I'm positive.
@@nitrorev Nevermind, just checked the Law of Root and its clarified there (and better written, non ambiguous) "Count the number of clearings you rule whose suit matches the clearing from which you are recovering the relic".
Edit: I deleted the other 2 comments since they no longer make sence =P although I still think that the way its worded can confuse, because is not in line with other factions which use similar mechanics
@UC0xMF2R_qeyJ1yPQ6_4bBGw From the Law:
"Step 3: Check for Discard. Count the number of clearings you rule whose suit matches the clearing from which you are recovering the relic. If you rule fewer of these clearings than the relic’s value, then you must end this Recover action and discard the Retinue card used to take this action. Otherwise, you may return to the Take Relic step or end this Recover action."
The law is more clear. I have checked this rule with the community of rules lawyers on this. No need to worry.
Did they had to make this faction such a comfused pile of mess? Who the hell is resposible for making this faction. Name please
It's complex on paper but it surprisingly contains less text than a more straightforward faction like Lord of the Hundreds. Reading carefully is a must but that's why it's an expansion faction and not a base game faction. Hope my video helped make them a bit easier to understand.
