Thanks for the excellent guide! I'm really looking forward to trying this faction out and meeting them in the RPG. I"m already imagining a scenario where the players are given the task to go a distant forest and hide away a relic taken from the Keepers.
Yeah, there's so much lore potential in this faction. Where did the relics come from? Why do the Badgers want them? and what is happening during Live off the Land?!
Thanks for making this explanation, it's great. 😊 Consider remaking it when you get the official components, to make it stand out even more. I'm sure a lot of learners will find it useful. It also would have been great to be able to read the factionboard while you were explaining.
Yeah, I agree. This was my first video and now I know to show the board more closely. I included a link in the description to the actual board so you can read it in a different tab while watching the vid. Or better yet, print it out.
A very polarising faction. Immense strengths in their scoring and devout knights, as well as bountiful weaknesses in prized trophies, discarded retunue cards and the retinue limit.
Love your videos, I just started playing the game recently and thanks to you I can explain how a faction works to my friends in case they are interested in one of the more complex factions.
That's great to hear! When I made my videos, the intention was to explain everything you need to know to not just play it but also teach it to others. Glad it worked out for you.
Awesome channel! Great rules explanations! Tried out the Keepers of Irons against the cats… cats had free reign…but still 4 point loss.. close game. Going try again with same factions and learn them better.. maybe add something tot he mix like landmarks or hirelings.
Thanks! I will definitely make some more. I want to wait to make Hirelings content because we don't yet have final materials and there could be changes but the 2 factions have now been released in their final forms so I felt the time was right for people to start learning the new factions ahead of the release of the Marauder Expansion.
This is so good. Really hope there's more of these in the future. One question about your recover example: I thought you when you recover with a card, you score all relics that match a way station there. So wouldn't you recover both figure relics in one action? Or both Tablet relics with one action? OR all four? I am confused. Again, great stuff NitroRev.
Hey Sam, BIG FAN!!!! So for the Recover action you do indeed recover and score all the relics that match ANY waystation in the clearing until you arrive at a relic that would force you to discard the card. If you have 2 or more different waystations in a clearing, you can recover both (or all three) types of relics in a single action!!! That is until you arrive at a relic whose number is high enough that you must discard the card used to initiate the recovers. Because I only rule 2 Fox clearings, I was only able to recover relics of value up to 2 safely without losing the card. Because the 3rd relic recovered had a higher value than my ruled fox clearings, I needed to discard the card after the first relic of value 3 and once I discarded a card I could no longer recover more relics as part of the same action. This is the meaning of the text under recover that says "stop action". You must stop recovering relics once you discard the card. Always recover relics 1 at a time 1 and check after each relic if you must discard the card or if you can carry on to recover another. And yes, more content coming soon.
Thank you for explaining this faction. I tried reading the instructions but was so confused that just left them in the box. They sound really fun and I think now I'll give them another go. Will you make one for the Rats?
Y shall explain encamp is place one way-station in once clearing having warriors at each turn, it won’t confuse other that they can only encamp 1 way-station in one clearing
I tried to do a slow pace because I've found of I speak to fast things don't soak in for people. I would agree, some things are probably easier to understand and you could double speed but I'd recommend switching back to normal speed for delve, recover and maybe some other things as they tend to be the things I repeat when I teach. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for your videos. I follow the Root happenings only from a distance and was not even aware of the evolution the rules have seen last April. My two questions relate to the 'Battle and Delve' section, around 12:00. (1) Can you delve into a clearing where you did not battle? You say that you *must* battle. Why is it possible to pull the relic into the rabbit-clearing even though there is noone to fight. (2) In the battle that you do showcase, the cats roll a '1' and you remove one of your warriors. Why is that hit not absorbed by the 'devout knights'?
1) You can indeed delve a relic into a clearing where you did not battle but ONLY if there was no enemy piece in the clearing in question. If there is at least 1 enemy piece (the Vagabond pawn counts as a piece), you MUST battle if you wish to delve. You are only required to battle IF there is an enemy piece, if the clearing only has your pieces, you may delve without battling but you must have at least 1 warrior (it cannot have just a building). 2)Devout Knights only protects you if you have warriors AND a relic. In the battle I demonstrated, I did not have a relic in that clearing at the time of battle so Devout Knights was not active. Delve occurs after the battle is resolved so there would be Devout Knights protecting me were I to do another battle in that clearing.
Thank you so much for the support! I will definitely make a video covering the Hirelings once we get a look at the final versions. I only felt comfortable making videos about the Lord of the Hundreds and the Keepers in Iron because Leder games have been kind enough to release the final materials for print and play. I don't want to make content that will confuse people if rules are changed between now and release so I'll just have to wait. ADSET coming soon though!
Good rule explanation for all new people to this faction. Question: Didn´t the new rule changed that you can only recover one relic type per recover card using? You use one card, fox or bird to retrieve the tablet or the statue and then use the next card for the remaining two.
Good question. This action was the specific reason I decided to make this video. You can indeed recover multiple relics with a single card which makes the Badger's point bursting ability comparable to the Woodland Alliance. If you read the text under the recover column closely you can see that it says "recover relics" plural but also you have to stop the action once you recover a relic whose value is higher than the number of ruled clearings of the clearing's suit. The word stop implies that you'd otherwise be able to keep going with your recovers. Let me know if you have more questions.
Hello, just to make this clear. With the law of root versión September 8, 2021. It states only relic, not relics. Can you help clear this out? As for today, you can delve only one relic per battle then may delve action, instead of several relics. Thank you!!!
@@Rimbombannus To clarify, you can use the same card to recover multiple relics of the same type. You first choose your card you want to perform the action with. Then you take a relic there and put it onto your faction board. Then you score points equal to its value and 2 if you completed a column of relics. Then you check if you need to discard the Retinue card based on the number of clearings you rule matching that clearing compared to the value of the relic. If you did not discard the card, then repeat this entire process, starting at the "Take a Relic and Put in on your Faction Board" step. You only STOP if you have to discard the card or there are no more relics of that type in the clearing.
Are you planning to make tutorials for the base factions? I think your videos are great. Then they would be complete and you could also send them to new players in advance, so that they get into the game.
Yes, I will definitely hit the base factions and the base game as well. My content started as being geared towards the more advanced crowd, covering factions that hadn't even been released at the time and now I'm getting into more mainstream stuff which means more entry level content coming too. Thing is, there are already lots of teaching videos for the base game out there, though I know not everyone is as thorough as I am with edge cases and common misconceptions. I have a lot of ideas for strategy tips and things of that nature too so it may take awhile to finish everything but someday I'd like to have vids for each faction.
QUESTION: Rules state "Hirelings you control add to rule. While you control a hireling, you treat all it's pieces as your own for rule" QUESTION ❓ Can we use hirelings for DELVE in the the retinue. Because DELVE states " if you rule with a keeper warrior..." It seems as if we can but just double checking
As long as you rule a clearing after the battle AND you have a physical keeper warrior, you can delve. If all you have in the clearing is Hirelings then you cannot use Retinue actions to battle with just Hirelings. The Hirelings can help you have enough pieces to rule the clearing but you must have one of your own warriors to even initiate the battle. If you get completely wiped out from the battle rolled a 3-3 and there are still Hireling pieces, you cannot delve because delve requires a keeper warrior. Hope this answers your question.
Huh, I'm just at 13:18 so sorry if this gets explained later, but I was under the impression until now that 1. They can't move with so many warriors unless they had some kind of wagon? 2. They tank 1 hit automatically?
That was a previous version of the badgers. They were completely reworked back in April. This is the final version (see video description for the boards) with the cumbersome trait removed and now their armored ability is only active when there are warriors in the same clearing as a relic. They feel totally different now as they are no longer slow and trudgy. They can be fast and battle relentlessly but they have a step in their turn called Live Off the Land which will keep their numbers small.
@@nitrorev ok nice thank you for clearing that up. That means the wagon tokens and everything associated with them were completely scrapped and won't be included in the game of course, right?
@@NinjarioPicmin That's correct. The entire Cumbersome trait and the wagons are removed. You can still see the Wagons on the Badger player board in the bottom right corner as a nod to their previous design. What you will get when you buy the expansion is everything I've shown including proper badger warrior meeples.
Great Guide! Question: Let's say you are the Keepers in Iron and you are attacking a clearing with 1 badger carrying a relic vs 3 cats, and you roll 3 v 3. Do the cats destroy your relic too? (Even if they are defending). Thank you in advance for your attention!
Yes they do and they score the bonus point from the relic because they are the ones that removed it. The only little quirk is you you battle the Vagabond and they remove the warrior and relic. They still get the normal VP for destroying the relic and the extra point but they do not score infamy points because infamy is strictly only on the Vagabond's turn.
Hello! I would love to work with you making this kind of videos in Spanish! Tons of people around the world are playing this game and having this videos in Spanish would help tons. Also I want to understand the ability of “devout knights”, every time that there is a battle action, this is triggered, is that right? (For instance, if you “battle then delve” twice, you would have the possibility to negate 1 hit each action)
For Devout Knights, every battle allows you to block the first hit taken either. If the enemy plays and ambush, it blocks only 1 hit from the ambush, if not, then it block the first rolled hit, if they roll a zero, it blocks any extra hits they add on. This works if you are attacking or defending but you must have a Badger warrior and at least 1 relic for it to work, otherwise it's a normal battle. I would love for this content to be available in Spanish, let me know how I could help. If you ha e discord or Reddit we can chat privately there.
So, about the retinue: - I may skip any of the 3 steps if I don't want to do it, right? But if I want to delve I have to battle first, if it's possible (even if it's a bad situation for me, so planning is necessary)? - if I don't have relics to recover, or just don't want to recover any (maybe because I'm in a vulnerable situation and don't want to let free vp's to my opponents), can I battle and don't delve?
Yes everything you said was correct. Unlike the Eyrie, everything about the retinue is optional. You may battle without delving if you want, just to police an enemy but if you want to delve you must battle is there's an enemy in the clearing. Usually you'd prefer to find a clearing without enemy pieces where you can delve without battling.
Yes, that's right. Sorry for the late response. Waystations are crafting pieces and which side they are facing doesn't matter, only the suit of the clearing.
No, a bird card only allows you to take the action in any suited clearing. When deciding if you must discard the card it specifically says if you rule fewer clearings that match the suit of the clearing, not the suit of the card.
@nitrorev It means for crafting a card with 3 rabbit symbols you need to have all of your way stations in rabbit clearings? So they can not craft "royal claim" card that needs 4 crafting symbols?
Another extra rule change. Is that to recover you also Risk looking your card because you need matching number of badgers to the value “in that clearing” this time. So two actions you risk cards on.
There are already tones of really good Root teaching videos out there. RTFM's video is how I learned. I might make one myself one day but for my first video, I wanted to start with content that nobody has made yet as this faction is brand new and people are still really confused about it.
ugh, this faction sounds convoluted, just to be convoluted! I think there was a need to be similar to other factions but be "different" and this type of thinking happens after you have exhausted many options already. TOO MANY of their actions feel like they are shooting themselves in the foot for no reason other than to actively cause conflict. This 3 steps forward, 2 steps back, should be a motto, not a faction to be built around. Jesus.
Badgers are definitely a convoluted faction which is why my first video ever was to teach how to play them and very soon after I made a video on how to find success with them as they are hard to understand and hard to master (unlike cats which are easy to understand and hard to master). Keepers in Iron are definitely a brain burning faction of puzzling and risk management but it's not too much of a lift for people who are so invested in Root that they are buying a 3rd major expansion. Play them a few times and it starts to fall into place as you internalize the rules and the guiding principles of how to play them effectively. It's a very rewarding faction to get good at so keep trying and ask me if you have any questions about the faction. I'll be happy to answer.
@@bulletsunderpressure Oh once you get what to do with your cards and focus on card wealth to build up a strong a bird heavy retinue, Badgers can steamroll unsuspecting enemies. Takes maybe 3-5 games to start to get a rhythm for them but after 10 games, they are scary powerful. Watch my strategy video if you're still struggling and you'll be better prepared to set yourself up for a strong game.
I think the "battle then delve" mechanic is hilarious. They can't just go explore for relics without picking fights with whoever's nearby lol

Can You explain how to play with hirelings in a vídeo? Nice work
I need to play them a lot more myself before I cover them. I will do it eventually though.
Do you have The Hirelings too? And could do a overview and tutorial for them? Great guide btw!
Thanks so much! The hirelings are not out yet in their final form but I'll probably cover them more when they are released.
Can u choose to pass actions while completing the retinue? Or is there penalty like the eerie?
Every action is totally optional.
So, about the retinue:
- I may skip any of the 3 steps if I don't want to do it, right?
So you can hire Otter mercenaries to rule more clearings for recovery/delving, right?
Yes absolutely. Mercenaries help you rule clearings for all purposes. Remember that you cannot delve without at least 1 Badger warrior though.
How does crafting work for them? If a card needed 3 bunnies to craft, would you need all of your weigh stations in bunny clearings in order to do so?
Yes, that's right. Sorry for the late response. Waystations are crafting pieces and which side they are facing doesn't matter, only the suit of the clearing.
Whats the name of Discord channel beacuse i cant Enter on description link
Does the Eyrie Despot Leader score 3 points when removing a relic?
Yep! Despot gets +1 for any number of tokens or buildings removed in battle so they get both bonuses.
27:15 What's up with the chewed-up cat meeple? 😂
Battle scars from wars of the past...
For recovery with a bird card can you rule 3 different suited clearings and not be penalized?
No, a bird card only allows you to take the action in any suited clearing. When deciding if you must discard the card it specifically says if you rule fewer clearings that match the suit of the clearing, not the suit of the card.
@@nitrorev thanks, man! Your vids help a ton
Keepers has to be the most difficult faction to play
Yep, by a wide margin
What about crafting. How they craft?
They use their way stations to craft.
@nitrorev It means for crafting a card with 3 rabbit symbols you need to have all of your way stations in rabbit clearings? So they can not craft "royal claim" card that needs 4 crafting symbols?
Or they haven't limitation for number of crafting symbols?
When you want to play Lacerda's game in Root
You can only have 10 cards in the top now in rules.
Another extra rule change. Is that to recover you also Risk looking your card because you need matching number of badgers to the value “in that clearing” this time. So two actions you risk cards on.
Can you make a root-onboarding-video? Save urself some time too maybe 😂
There are already tones of really good Root teaching videos out there. RTFM's video is how I learned. I might make one myself one day but for my first video, I wanted to start with content that nobody has made yet as this faction is brand new and people are still really confused about it.
Ha! This doesn't seem so hard!
17:30 Adds cards to the retinue
*oooooooooonoo*
ugh, this faction sounds convoluted, just to be convoluted!
@@nitrorev yes, how long did it take for them win a match?
@@bulletsunderpressure Oh once you get what to do with your cards and focus on card wealth to build up a strong a bird heavy retinue, Badgers can steamroll unsuspecting enemies. Takes maybe 3-5 games to start to get a rhythm for them but after 10 games, they are scary powerful. Watch my strategy video if you're still struggling and you'll be better prepared to set yourself up for a strong game.
