Just bought the V90 estate fully loaded spent several hours figuring it all out, lots of tech In the end I love it, actually get thumbs up when I’m on the road, unbelievable Not a lot of them on the road so it sticks out I’m happy with it and it’s quick enough
I've owned a V90 D5 for 6 months and I still look forward to driving it on a daily basis.Amongst the legions of Audis,BMWs andMercs on the road,it really stands out.Acceleration is more than adequate and motorway cruising effortless.Comfort for 5 is superb and safety easily the best in class. The 2 litre diesel engine is returning 40mpg+ overall and is amazingly quiet when on the move.I would urge anyone contemplating buying a German estate car to test drive this car before making a decision.Apart from joining the mainstream and just being one of many thousands, they will enjoy the best car in it's class
No car has ever looked timeless. Those front lights are very 2010s. I don't know how light design will change in the future, but it is currently instantly recognisable as a 2010s car.
Great review Matt... I think this time you got the mic that actually worked and the nice editing.. I started this review thinking it will be boring but u nailed it...Great job..
If I was in the market for a large wagon, this would be my only choice. I'm not a huge fan of the German 3 at the moment and Volvo has come back strong! I like every model they've released in the last couple years, especially the XC90. The new turbo+supercharged I4 is genius and may start a trend in the industry.
Volvo is killing it right now, I am sure this and the XC90 will sell like hot cakes. I love em, if I could, I'd get both! xD ...one day! As someone from Sweden, here they will of sell, no question about it. Even if the Passat has given Volvo competition in recent years I think these new cars will fix that. I really like the idea of these new 2 liter engines. Will be interesting to see what the ratings will be, I'm guessing that was the D5, my favourite is the D4, amazing ecnomy and more then enough power. The current ones I know got 8 speed, 440 nm and 190 hp, all you really need.
After all my hatred putted down on you Matt on your older videos, you are becoming quite a nice presenter finally. Not a robot reading some script with no emotions. Very good !
Yes, in some areas Tesla might be ahead. But talking about price and range, Tesla still is a very distinctive product for people who have the necessary money. I was thinking more about the 2 liter engines Volvo uses. Battery technology is not for everyone yet, so Volvo claiming they are not using gas guzzling engines anymore stands for a very pragmatic view of modern transport with which I can identify with. Same goes for the autonomous driving. I see Volvo as the only car manufacturer right now who can possible gap the bridge btw. the oldfashioned car industry and the newcomers like Tesla. But I'm talking more about marketing and the fresh design language of Volvo which can transport this message. BMW might even be more ahead with their lightweight construction but stating that we are solely using 2 liter engines is a bold and effective statement form Volvo.
Not only that, with using the same basic block and parts in most of the cars, makes parts for these cars cheaper and easier to get. So its a smart ecnomical move too, probably why they have such good prices, even at base price and trim its a really good car. I love the D4 engine, its perfect blend of power and ecnomy. 190 hp and 400 nm, I said 440 first, but guess that was the old D4, it had 180 and 440nm. Anyway, 4l/100 km consumption with such power and that size of a car. And the difference between the bigger models and the small ones are not big at all. Odd thing is the manual get the better economy, these days the automatics tend to be the better choice. And with 2 more gears I'd think it would be better. Maybe it is better on the highways.
Nothing posted on the Top Gear RUclips without the trio will be well received, it's a lost cause. They have the best reviewer on the internet, Chris Harris and the mindless drones still dislike it.
I love how people get so hung up on the boot space. It used to be that the rear window was too upright and made the car ugly. Now people are complaining that you can't go down to IKEA and buy a new bookshelf every day.
That little section at the end - Do a few videos of just that style: Pretty camera angles and factual summarising voiceover, the end. Long video and short video for each car... maybe. Still, whole thing was a great review!
Very good review, good job. As for the car, well... I would not want to be seen dead in a Merc or BMW so if i had to choose between those and the Volvo, i would go for the Volvo. But those types of cars are not for me, i prefer something smaller and more sporty.
Lovely location but and nice interior but what a noisy engine..sorry I can hear 👂🏼 that Diesel engine rather have an Audi A6 any day..especially with a v6 diesel or small petrol engine..my 2p worth but more importantly after this lockdown I want to go to that location so need to escape this lockdown!
This looks like a pretty neat car, although I really don't like the sloping roof and boot. Volvo estates are known for their practicality and space in the boot, yet this model hardly compares to the V70, or even any of its competitors. On the positive side though it seems Volvo is keeping the CD player in this generation, unlike many of its rivals.
And the trained swedish forestant comes in standard, while stationary it comes out and cleans the interior. Its lifespan circa 3 years and to replace it will cost you 1500 grand and for a untrained only 1000 grand.
What are you talking about??? Ford owned Volvo, not GM. If that's what you are bs'ing about...? Besides, these new Volvos (XC90, S90, V90, and soon rest of lineup) all have their own new platform. Which is why Volvo are having a lineup of some really nice cars because they had FREEDOM. Chinese money is king.
Oh....then i had very old news.... GM buy aktien i read at german journal (auto motor und sport and auto bild) oh chinese mony i'am not sure, actuell but platform isen't so much important, to gave an brand an charakter..more an powertrain ,suspension and the set-up then also (an first reason) safty results.... I'am not so exciting about platforms, because an good old frame make it happend that an car is (inside the fleet) -outstanding not cheap "call" and leather allover an car doesn't mean this car is high quality... Some squere by inch at textile structur cost much more.... But before farmes through it into biogas-reactors, car companys color it and sales it..... All in all , in my view it's not really an new presentation like the koenigsegg sweden is at it best at furniture, holiday , food and snow'y news...
as a 98 v90 owner i love the style except for the lack or rear space also the fact that it is fwd or so called all wheel drive and it only comes as a bloody auto , no i will stick with my last of the real volvo,s
Looks good, interior's great, but it's reaaaaaly underpowered. And the touchscreen as an input for all the controls - not good. It'll always be dirty, it's distracting and not so comfy to operate. All the rest, definitely better than the audi, lets see what the 5er will be.
With all due respect, having seen matt doing the reviews for a while I have to say that this guy would be great as a motor journalist. However as a presenter, he lacks that British humour and his reviews are always a bit dull
All in all it's very nice, but I can't help but to think they'll lose customers by not building any RWD cars any more. I couldn't afford a V90, but I wouldn't buy one for that very reason. I know there are plenty of people who prefer FWD/AWD or who don't care at all, but I would buy a BMW if I had to choose...
Yeah yeah FFS wake up autocar - you maybe earning a good living from all this but semi-autominous cars are on their way to fully-autonimous cars is that what you want?? Wanna wake up to the day when your car tells you it wont let you in - and of course drive you - because you defaulted on a payment? They are doing this nice and slowly so as not to wake the sheep up but i promise you we heading toward full automation. But your keep taking the cash, and pretending like there's no problem..
Absolutely, people who want to sit there and let it all happen can do so, so long as people who do love driving still have that choice and at any time they choose.
Khaled Farhad Every car camera compared to the recent cameras in phones, that can record 4k, laser focus and stuff like that, is crap. And those camera modules cost around 20 dollars. What exactly costs 700 dollars on a crappy camera is a mystery for me.
To answer the question of the video title: NEVER. And then the customisation options... MB is playing in a completely different league.
It will only be 2.0 l 4 cyl engines... It has been known for a time now. Like anyone gives a shit how many cylinders a car has smh. It's a really smart decision (economically wise) Volvos aren't for the kind of people who does, in that case.
***** Im sure the camry will last longer then this thing lol... and be more dependable and cost less to maintain. I will gladly drive a camry over a grandpa wagon
ehhhhhhhhhhhhh i dont know. I like it but i dont. I mean if you literally compare side by side interior's with a C class it looks like outdated trash. Im a volvo fan but this is just not good enough to compete with benz and bmw at that price. They should also make the back squared off like wagons of old. Love the front exterior though, to end on a high note :)
Just bought the V90 estate fully loaded spent several hours figuring it all out, lots of tech

The front looks classy and timeless. Damn nice!
No car has ever looked timeless. Those front lights are very 2010s. I don't know how light design will change in the future, but it is currently instantly recognisable as a 2010s car.
which only means any other headlight set-up now are still in the 2010's because they pretty much look futuristic to me.
Compliments on the camerawork, nice quick review
First review I've watched from Autocar and I loved it. Great camerawork, soundtrack and the reviewer was great.
First review from Autocar? Where have you been for the past 8 years?
Watching reviews in other channels. :P
Finally a good quality video from Autocar. Keep it up!
I absolutely love this new style of video and Matt Prior is absolutely fantastic in these videos. More of this please!
Like the format. ..and love the car.
Great review Matt... I think this time you got the mic that actually worked and the nice editing.. I started this review thinking it will be boring but u nailed it...Great job..
Much better review than usual, keep up the pace!
great car, great review. now for the polestar wagon.
Polestar has been confirmed, no date yet, nor price.
+valcked Sweet! Didn't know that.
Great review- superb actually- impressed with Matt!
The music at the end represents perfectly what volvo driving is about.
New video editor: good. Matt Pryor less boring that usually: good.
It'll probably be way more reliable than it's German rivals. Newer BMWs, Mercs and audis can be a total nightmare sometimes
And expensive, especially Audi and BMW.
newer volvos aren't really known for their reliability either, unfortunalety
bmw is horrid. some of the parts spoil easily...
You wouldn't know anyway.
Finally some emotion! New you had it in you. :)
Damn right BETTER than any German "rival". In every single sense of the word...
I'd actually take this over any of it's german rivals currently available. That's a first for me. Volvo has become sexy.
Real sexy
looks amazing, easily the best in class in terms of design, it just look sooo good!!
If I was in the market for a large wagon, this would be my only choice. I'm not a huge fan of the German 3 at the moment and Volvo has come back strong! I like every model they've released in the last couple years, especially the XC90. The new turbo+supercharged I4 is genius and may start a trend in the industry.
absolutely gorgeous!
I like how Volvo's making that slight rear glass panel kink a company design language. it instantly catches my eye.
Volvo is killing it right now, I am sure this and the XC90 will sell like hot cakes. I love em, if I could, I'd get both! xD ...one day! A great looking estate Car and very stylish
I like the review format. Keep it up.
After all my hatred putted down on you Matt on your older videos, you are becoming quite a nice presenter finally. Not a robot reading some script with no emotions. Very good !
Quality video Quality car, Volvo's are special again !!
brilliant car! there is something tesla about it, and I'm not talking about the touch screen only.
That just proves how ahead of everyone else Tesla is. Doesn't it?
+Nick Amarit you got IT!
Yes, in some areas Tesla might be ahead. But talking about price and range, Tesla still is a very distinctive product for people who have the necessary money. Great review!
Very good review by everyone involved. New Top Gear should look and learn. Kudos.
Nothing posted on the Top Gear RUclips without the trio will be well received, it's a lost cause. They have the best reviewer on the internet, Chris Harris and the mindless drones still dislike it.
Really liking the new Volvo.

i love it
Great review- was this filmed somewhere inSpain?
I love the new Volvos, theres something fresh and cool, most of all interesting about them which its germen rivals lacks of.
Why Canada doesn't allow for the diesel engine is beyond me 🤬
great review! this guy is swell
I like it too
Very good review, good job. As for the car, well... I would not want to be seen dead in a Merc or BMW so if i had to choose between those and the Volvo, i would go for the Volvo. But those types of cars are not for me, i prefer something smaller and more sporty.
seems relaxing
I'd Have One!
I would have this over a Model S any day. Imagine if it had 700 BHP!
This in the T8 is good enough. Probably some tuner will get the T8 to 500hp.
Rumours say that Polestar will make a Polestar edition of the S90 ad V90 with 600hp
Surprised you didn’t mention the boot was smaller than the previous V70
Volvo should do a coupe version, but "C90" sounds like a tape or a moped.
Looks beautiful. To bad they failed with S90s back end. S90 back looks like a ugly skoda
Great review! Beauty this new V90! Did I see it correctly that the curbweight is 2000kg? I can hardly believe that in 2016.
the v90 is coming to the states?
Volvo's US website says in "early 2017". They now allow "build your own" fun with the S90, but not the V90 as yet.
It just needs like 600 bhp and it would be the perfect estate
Would be nice if you actually answered the question you put in the title...
Its up to everyone. Like as always in the "higher end", everyones have their own liking.
coming to USA? doubt it.....we want more diesel
D5, with a 4 pot engine?
Smaller engines is the future.
Yes but it's turbocharged, not naturally aspirated. And it has a special cylinder to compensate for the turbo lag.
where was this filmed please? those lakes look nice.. anyone? thanks.
well...something to look forward to from the swedish other than IKEA's meatball...huehue
Best car in the world ^^
It's a great motherfucking goddamn car !! Wow
I would literally date you if you came and picked me up in this car....actually in any car 🙂
i like the A7 headlights.
Im used to drive £/€ 500-800 cars, so this is very amusing to me to hear about how "loud" this terrible V90 is, etc. etc. etc.
I like your watch
Lovely location but and nice interior but what a noisy engine..sorry I can hear 👂🏼 that Diesel engine rather have an Audi A6 any day..especially with a v6 diesel or small petrol engine..my 2p worth but more importantly after this lockdown I want to go to that location so need to escape this lockdown!

needs an excellence model really badly.
Better than the "new" Audi A5 coupe
And a lot better than the new E-Class (ugh)
10X more interesting than german sos.
Lovely interior but is the car really two tons in weight...!? That is rather a lot for a 4 cylinder diesel car, even one with AWD! :-o
And the trained swedish forestant comes in standard, while stationary it comes out and cleans the interior. Its lifespan circa 3 years and to replace it will cost you 1500 grand and for a untrained only 1000 grand.
loving it... but interiors are strange
humour is good
I know that guy
...hi guys...if somebody forgot opel/Vauxhall??? Or is GM parts inside
What are you talking about??? Ford owned Volvo, not GM. If that's what you are bs'ing about...? Besides, these new Volvos (XC90, S90, V90, and soon rest of lineup) all have their own new platform. 50 grand?!!!
the Chinese knows luxury
The Swedes*. The chinese just bring the money to volvo.
You are kidding, right? Everyone knows it's Swedish. It even has little Swedish flags on the seats.
Same think as jaguar land rover own by indian company but still it's British manufacturer.
Swedish design + Chinese money = You can see a car like this in the market
With all due respect, having seen matt doing the reviews for a while I have to say that this guy would be great as a motor journalist. However as a presenter, he lacks that British humour and his reviews are always a bit dull
Its Swedish, you get a free asylum seeker in the boot with each car sold :)
Good one :D
All in all it's very nice, but I can't help but to think they'll lose customers by not building any RWD cars any more. I couldn't afford a V90, but I wouldn't buy one for that very reason. Uhm... They haven't built RWD cars since the 90's. Sluta babbla

distracting dashboard display
What a stupid shape for the rear hatch.
Better than its German Rivals? Sorry.. its Not.. GERMANS build the BEST CARS in the WORLD 👍
Just 4 cyl Engines.. WTF ?!?!
Peder Hansen No.. Sorry
Looks great, if it's wasn't for their reliability. Lol
Volvos are said to be some of the most solid cars?
Older ones, the newer ones, especially on their newest platform do not have a good record.
Meh
Yeah yeah FFS wake up autocar - you maybe earning a good living from all this but semi-autominous cars are on their way to fully-autonimous cars is that what you want??

James Franklin
no weed mate...wait a while..

700 for one bad camera. When will car manufacturers learn. This is just stupid prise.
Have you tried the camera system? I have, in the new XC90...it's quite superb!
Khaled Farhad
Every car camera compared to the recent cameras in phones, that can record 4k, laser focus and stuff like that, is crap. And those camera modules cost around 20 dollars.
What exactly costs 700 dollars on a crappy camera is a mystery for me.
except for the engine, i would say its on par with the Germans.
considering that there will be a T8-Version with over 400hp, its not really underpowerd. :)
+Jean Philippe Fahrni there will be a T8 version !? why didn't he say so! we'll have to wait and see!
+Иван Калашников the t8 Will still only be a 4 cylinder
+Adam West booo
Shame there won't be a 6 cylinder option for this car.

What a ugly rear end. Those wheels are HUGE.. it prob looks really bad with those smaller optioned wheels
Go back and drive your Camry...
***** Im sure the camry will last longer then this thing lol... and be more dependable and cost less to maintain. I will gladly drive a camry over a grandpa wagon
Toyota4Life the irony.
***** numbers dont lie !
Toyota4Life what number
Too bad Volvo you stepped away from your old values and only try too hard to 'be German'.

You must know absolutely NOTHING about cars if you buy a Volvo for this much with a 2L v4.
still boring one
