You were asking about whether RATM has ever been in trouble with the law. Not in so many words. Band members like Tom Morello have been arrested numerous times in protests on various social issues. Also, during the melee that ensued during the filming of RATM's video for the song "Sleep Now in the Fire", the video's director, Oscar winner Michael Moore, was arrested as the crowd that gathered on Wall Street to hear the band play stormed the Stock Exchange and it was forced to shut down. It's one of the legendary RATM stories and one in which shutting down capitalism for a day made them feel proud. So, Rage basically gets into "good trouble"; the kind that politicians, yt nationalists and law enforcement doesn't like. They don't just talk the talk. They walk the walk.
“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”
- George Orwell’s novel, ‘1984’
This is my favorite Rage song because of the use of this quote. It is used so perfectly and in the exact context which it was originally intended.
even though george orwell being a anti-communist CIA sellout... That phrase couldn't be more truthful.
Such a perfect line
That last guy was Ralph Nader. He ran as a third party (Green Party) against Bush and Gore in 2000. I voted for him.
Me too!
You don't need a new band like rage because it's all the same problems today as back then.
Except they’re not putting out new music. Culture influences how ppl think & unfortunately our culture is mostly being influenced by machine music. When real sht is touched on, it’s usually an aesthetic argument & nvr touches the systemic problems. That’s why more artists like rage would overall be a good thing. Music that can inspire the kind of movts we desperately need.
Sure you do. More voices against the anti-everything fascist right is needed more now than ever. Democracy is at stake!
Tom MacDonald H*O*G* fl 🐴
@@seanstookesberry5224 😂
No
@@SkipFrontzJr Guy really tried to compare Tom macdonald to RATM... faith in humanity lost.
Music in the 60’s and 70’s addressed all the societal ills- we cared and protested for change. RATM supported that too later. We need more bands like this. ❤
Currently, the only band I can think of would be Run the Jewels, Which Zak ( the lead singer) does a few tracks with
Rage opened for Run The Jewels on tour in 2022 until Zach tore his acl & they had to cancel all 2023 dates
You should do "Know your Enemy" next. With lyrics cause it's important
Definitely
More Rage, never stop going down this rabbit hole.
Fun fact - the 'who controls the past..' line is pretty much a direct quote from George Orwell's 1984 - a story of how a government can control every aspect of life including literally re-writing history.
Love an Orwell reference
Ralph Nader was the last guy
The last guy was Ralph Nader - social activist, consumer advocate and 2 time (?) presidential candidate - the Bernie Sanders of his time
I remember they were the only band to have their entire discography banned for a while.
Look up the DNC of 2000.
Zack did an interview in 1996 Japan. Look it up. You'll get your answers for your questions.
Have you ever seen that Wiki article that lists "songs deemed offensive after 9/11"? Like any song that even mentions a plane or flying (Learn to Fly by Foo Fighters being one) but when you get to Rage it just says "all songs by Rage Against the Machine"
When I was 3 or 4 years old there was a corruption dealing with news on the TV, and I remember I asked my dad why do politicians do that because when other take the place on power they can see all they've done. My question was: why do they do that when the next one can call them out? And he told me "they sort of have a silence pact, they never tell what the previous one have done, because if they do, the next would call on them too". That really hit on me even at that young age. "Who control the past now controls the future, who controls the present now controls the past" that's how things are really in this world we've made for ourselves sadly.
I’m a 47 year old from Australia that was a young teenager when rage against the machine hit the scene and blew everyone away , you are a smart young man that understands what they are saying and I like that , keep doing what you are doing 👌
It’s older, but you’d probably dig the Dead Kennedys for a similar political vibe 👍🏻
The PMRC protest that Rage did was great. Think they stood on stage for like 45 minutes just silent. After a while the crowd started getting pissed, which was kinda the point.
Yes!! I was gonna say Dead Kennedys is the only other band I can think of that was so overtly political -- and the great Jello Biafra was the perfect mouthpiece for that band, just as Zack de la Rocha was the perfect frontman for Rage. And both Jello and Zack have never stopped their political activism to this day. But let's not forget about the ladies!! The amazing riotgrrrl band Bikini Kill was also overtly political, although frontwoman Kathleen Hanna's lyrics were more focused on the female experience in a male-dominated world. But it was radically feminist, and shocking at the time, to hear her lyrics and the way she delivered them -- screams and shrieks. That band was also revolutionary -- even moreso because they never signed to a major label and were on the legendary indie label called "Kill Rock Stars." Need I say more?
RATM IS straight up On, Now, Past and so forth! You’d Love “the Ghost of Tom Joad” !! Yet, another masterpiece ❤
They didn’t get into trouble per say but in 2000 I was at a show that they played in protest in front of the RNC; they were deemed to be an unlawful assembly and they shot rubber bullets at us, and in the melee that ensued all the bands gear was stolen.
That last guy is Ralph Nader who has been a lifelong advocate against Wall Street, an icon of consumer protections, lives to expose corrupt government agencies, and ran for President a few times as either a candidate of the Green Party or as an independent. He's certainly an unsung hero of America in the 20th and even 21st centuries and became famous in the 1960's as a young Princeton-educated lawyer from immigrant parents by exposing the reckless dangers of vehicles sold in America. Because of him (or at least partly in some cases), we have a lot of laws, regulations, and whatnot to protect the people, protect democracy as best we can, and ensure that consumers are safe from corporate products that were otherwise dangerous, cancer-causing, you name it. You should read about him. That man is a millionaire on paper due to his legal work, books, and stock holdings in companies like Cisco and Apple, but basically lives off $30,000 a year, rents an apartment, doesn't own a vehicle, and chose his career and defending the American people than marry and have a family. The rest of his money goes toward his advocacy groups. Ralph Nader, man, he's a real one and both the Democrats and Republicans hate him because they fear him.
You should do a deep dive on the members of the band. Zac comes from a line of badasses and Tom has a PHD in political science from Harvard. They are also active in protesting. They’re the real deal.
Tom's parents were also very politically active. Tom's dad was a freedom fighter in Kenya and later the UN Ambassador. His Mom was a teacher and pro-union leader, later creating a non-profit to fight censorship. I think its in his DNA.
The quote you mentioned is a reference to the book 1984.
But ZDLR is a genius lyricist imo. You can't go wrong with his stuff. Try:
WITH KRS-ONE AND THE LAST EMPEROR: CIA (Criminals in Action) (1999)
WITH DJ SHADOW: March of Death (2003)
WITH JON THEODORE (FROM THE MARS VOLTA) AS THE DUO ONE DAY AS A LION: Wild International, One Day as a Lion, and If You Fear Dying (2009)
WITH RUN THE JEWELS: (Close Your Eyes) and Count to Fuck (2014), Kill Your Masters (2016) and Ju$t (2020)
WITH ALGIERS: Irreversible Damage (2022)
SOLO: Digging for Windows (2016)
RATM are anti-government in the sense of resisting unjust laws that hurt people who are often marginalized, like women and the immigrant groups; it's not hating the government just for the sake of it, like some seem to believe.
Zack not only talks the talk, he's always walked the walk and has always been working to help people since he was young. In short, he's a real one.
❤
The last guy was Ralph Nader.
Run the jewels is a pretty good modern day descendant of this. And that was Ralph Nader.
As a rage fan from their hay day, I've been watching a lot of reactions videos lately....while i enjoy seeing new people dig the music, i am ecstatic to see someone HEAR the message. ✊🏾
Punk music talks about politics. They don’t rap like rage but Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, Pennywise all have the similar political philosophies written into their songs.
The last guy was Ralph Nader, he ran against Bush and Gore as part of the Green Party’s presidential candidate.
You’re not wrong but very band you named is just as old as RATM.
@@wheatthicks true but he asked any bands still together.
You didn't get the exact line. But you got the exact sentiment. Kudos!
The Coup is a contemporary band that speaks out. Boots Riley is making movies/tv now but he and Pam the Funktress rocked the house and the system/machine for years
That last guy was Ralph Nader.
The guy at the end was Ralph Nader
Prophets of Rage. These guys with B-Real and Chuck D! Fire as well!
Aaahhh RATM, ❤❤️🔥🤘
That line comes from Orwell.
Run the Jewels would be the closest to RATM in today’s music. No coincidence that Zach is the unofficial third member.
That last guy is Ralph Nader. He spearheaded the consumer protection bills and fighting for environmentalism. He was basically the active Bernie Sanders of the time and ran as an independent Green Party in three way race with Bush and Al Gore in 2000.
Lol.. welcome to the machine friend. The bands you can listen to now by both Tom Morello and Zach de La Rocha right now are "Run the Jewels", and the "Atlas Underground"
You want to watch them stand up and “ get in trouble “ watch sleep now in the fire
That was Ralph Nader the last gentleman he was running for president!
The ultimate value of this band is how they can make feel empowered and hopeful while exposing evil, and how that feeling ultimately leads to educating the self to grow above the system.
Stray From the Path is a hardcore band that grew up on Rage. Check out “Badge and a Bullet” for an introduction to them. They’re carrying one of the torches.
Run the Jewels
You really need to watch the live version of this! Even better!
It's always been crazy to me that Body Count got in so much media trouble for Cop Killer, which is kind of RatM Jr in my opinion, while RatM doesn't get mentioned. I think the powers that be have been worried about the Streisand Effect and haven't wanted to draw attention to them.
Finally this track... My favourite...
I voted for Ralph Nader because I was disgusted by both choices at the time. That was my first ever vote and I was so proud. I hope we will have more choices in this country some day.
Must have been an early 80s kid, because that was my first vote too and was for Nader.
"Long whip/Big America"
CORROSION OF CONFORMITY
That was Ralph Nader at the end.
The last guy was Ralph Nader. He ran for pres like a million times on a 3rd party ticket. 6:47
IMMORTAL TECHNIQUES RICH MAN'S WORLD.... is the only current song that hits like RATM
I’ve been binge watching your videos all morning starting with your Rage Against the Machine reactions 🔥 I like your wide range of music reactions. I heard you say on a few videos that rap, hip-hop, and R&B was your thing growing up. Have you heard of Harry Mack? If you haven’t, I strongly recommend. Hands down the greatest off the top, freestyle rapper of all time. Yeah I said it ! Look up Harry Mack Omegle Bars 45 or 37. Can’t go wrong with any of his many videos but these are my personal favorites. You will not be disappointed and you can thank me later. Happy Holidays !
If this band does not get you hyped...call a doctor 'cause you is dead.
Rage Against the Machine remind me a lot of Dead Prez in terms of the lyricism and "punch you in the face" of it all, Dead Prez's album Lets Get Free is like a perfect pair to RAtM for me.
Public enemy have been doing this from day one.
"is there any band today that is like this?"
kids today: "What's a band? do you mean coldplay?"
That guy at the end is Ralph Nader. He’s an interesting dude but he’s a complicated figure.
I wish there were a whole rack of artists like rage. Unfortunately there isn’t that I know of. I can’t think of any artist that song after song talks about the systems of oppression the way rage did. Ppl will bring up run the jewels but they don’t have mass appeal like rage had. (Btw Reagan by kill Mike of run the jewels is a great one if you like rage.) There are great artists who talk about issues, but no one who has the kind of systemic and materialist analysis that rage had on every song. Tho I think if someone does come up it won’t sound like rage. But that makes sense bc it’ll be for young ppl & young ppl want to feel like they’re listening to something new. Idc as long as it has the message and has the ability to influence us to fight the systems that oppress the ppl.
July 4th, a lot of people should do a Rage Reaction Challenge.
What better place than here
What better time than now
🎉
Who controls the past controls the future. Because what we teach in history class will shape the youth and thus the future.
That guy was Ralph Nader
You wanted a recommendation for something more recent, so here's one. Now, prepare yourself, because it's different. But I think the video will show you what you need to know. The track is Executioner's Tax by a band called Power Trip. The singer died, unfortunately, but the song and video absolutely rock, and the message is clear. Watch the video with the singer in purple.
'If you're not turned onto politics, politcs will turn on you.' Ralph Nader
Zack Dela Rocha words will be forever relevant
Stray from the Path are a modern band very much in the vein of RATM.
Ralph Nader, last guy. Great American. Look him up
You keep pronouncing Rodeo like the cattle sport instead of the Drive in LA lol
✊🏾
Political bands " phrophets of rage " with B Real , Chuck D, Tom Morello, Dj Lord.. "One Day As A Lion" with Zach De La Rocha. " Krs One" my political man from the bronx.
"Fever 333". Algiers ( A Must Listen), System of a down, RISE AGAINST, Against me, Pennywise....
You talk about this type of band that makes music like this in current events. More Hip Hop focused but you could try "Run the Jewels" with Killer Mike and EL-P. There is also Bambu De Pistola (AKA Bambu) and Ruby Ibarra talking who both talk more specific about Filipinos struggle.
In Russia, a man was arrested for handing out flyers. When they interrogated him, they found all the flyers are blank. "Comrade, why hand out blank flyers?" "Because, Comrade, we all know the problems, and they never change, so why waste the ink?" It's meant to be a joke, but....folks....how funny is it? It's a little too true....
Run the Jewels has some good social and political commentary in their songs.
my own thoughts are that RATM is the reason rock and roll is suppressed in the USA, or at least not marketed any more. bands like them and system of a down scared the corporate government media so much they ended rock and roll in America
That's an interesting theory 🤔
If you're looking for current bands whose music is on the same themes as RAtM, try Sin Shake Sin. Can't Go to Hell is a great starting point for them.
There is a heavier metal version of RATM called stray from the path. You might not like their style but they got that same passion and rage. If you were to react to them i would recommend badge and a bullet by them.
RTJ :D
Very different but I recommend REN Money Game 1 & 2. He was highly influenced by RATM and his music always has an important message.
Please come back to do more Rage 😭
3:15 There are many bands that still adress the same issues since way back (even before Rage members were born) but in the same way that Rage did and as a "mainstream" band?... i really don't think so. Most good Rock, Metal and Punk bands will always have some kind of criticism towards society, politics, laws, philosophies and institutions, but when compared to Rage Against the Machine they're often way less direct. Rage Against the Machine are unapologetic and often as direct and straightforward as a slap that hits hard and brings people back to life when they're becoming uncouscious
Bands that sing about current events or social commentary ? Yes, a lot of punk bands do, two that spring to mind that you might have come across that have a large back catalog and are currently playing are Anti-Flag or Rise Against.
More recent artists such as , K flay, Grandson, and Yungblud are worth a listen. In particular you should check out Fever 333
To your question if you dig into punk music you’ll see some current bands. Rise Against is the most recent I’ve listened to. If you want to get some contemporaries of RATM, Bad Religion and NOFX are a couple you could try out.
While there's no one exactly like RATM, A lot of System of a Down and Rise Against's songs are in the ballpark.
Ralph Nader for leadership!
Rage still touring!
Unfortunately they had to cancel the rest of the tour last year, but I’m remaining cautiously optimistic that they’ll plan another one in the future.
I think Body Count (a metal band with old school rapper Ice-T) does a lot of the things Rage used to do. With political and social commentary.
Ive been a huge fan of Rage since they first played their song on the radio. It was a Rock station in Boston. Everyone loved them, their songs became a constant on the station for 15 yrs.
I never understood why they never played rage on the hip hop, rap stations. I was SHOCKED when listening to you song reaction stations and Black people didn't know them. I think they were purposely kept off the stations that black people listened too. They knew it would uplift the community and wake them up to the bullshit of the Democrat party. Who is just as bad if not worse than the Republicans. They have been gaslighting the black community for decades.........
WAKE UP!!!!! AND YES YOU ARE RIGHT, IT WAS YOU GUYS WHO GOT THEM IN THE HOF. THERE IS NO OTHER REASON IT TOOK SO LONG
There is actually a very popular famous song called "Revolution" by The Beatles. I hope you will review that song. It's a very good social justice song.
Look into a Philly band called Soul Glo
Run the Jewels is the only other comparable group, really.
Grandson is pumping out a lot of amazing political music. Thoughts & Prayers (school shootings), Blood // Water (Big Pharma), and 6 :00 (Police violence), are a few good ones to start with
The lyrics were supposed to be the take away, I think.
Recommend "Dirty" or "Blood/Water" by grandson
Late to the party, but Desaparecidos have very similar values and are also in your face political rock.
Tom Macdonald
Check Brass Against covers really good
Tupacamaru
I think??? Rage got banned from ever preforming on SNL again, I forgot 🫣🤔 what they did . Think they set the American flag 🇺🇸 on fire 🔥 during their performance on SNL. Correct me if im wrong .....
La letra no te puede molestar porque estás en la landn of libertad
Una cosa . No hay mensaje es solo música. De verdad
Not sure if you have seen any of Zack and RTJ, they still fighting the good fight.
!Outernational! is also a communist band whose music is produced by and sometimes includes Tom Morello.
RATM is against capitalist governments. They supported the Shining Path in Peru (who were Maoists like the Black Panthers, and who were also militarily defeated by US arms and funds). Engage the works of Omali Yeshitela to understand RATM politics better.
😂😂😂😂I GOT LIKE #69!!!!!
Sleep now in the fire. Pay very close attention to the video.
RATM > Occupy Wallstreet > Bernie Sanders > ???? Cornell???? What’s the next movement. Keep
It going no matter what!!!
Quién se lo toma peor?
Other bands that criticise capitalism are propaghandi, Stray from the path and much more
