- Spent an October day fly fishing on Central PA's Little J. The conditions were your typical fall conditions-low and clear water. Staying below the fish in these conditions is always key. As well as, light tippet (7x) and single nymphing.
It started out cold but as the temps rose in mid day, the fish moved into the shallow riffles. The bite pretty much lasted all day.
The winning flies were a size 16 pink beaded Walt's worm and a new original pattern of mine in a size 14. I have since named it the "Jack Daniel's". The name has come from the term "whiskey" (Troutbitten's, Dom has coined this term for a 20+ inch trout).
Patterns always develop as we fish. Paying attention to them is always key.

I learn so much from your videos. This one has excellent lighting where we can see the sighter often, and I seldom see any sign of movement on the sighter when you set the hook! That's why you catch 5 times as many fish as the rest of us! 🥲

@@OldDominionTroutBum I've been using the hemostat PItzen knot you described in a previous video. In my hands, it's a lot stronger than the Davy (or double Davy) knot. I'd love to know your thoughts on this issue.
@@alexargyros7186 Alex, The Pitzen is definitely stronger than the Davy (although the Davy is pretty darn strong). But, I prefer the Davy on my flies as opposed to the Pitzen (which I use at the tippet ring) as I want the weakest knot at my fly. If you are stuck (or a fish breaks you), I want it to break at the fly, instead of my tippet ring. When you use both knots of the same strength, I find it is a crap shoot between which break first.
That being said, I have tons of confidence on the Davy (I just use the single).

Cory, another great video. I know that river well. It’s one of my favorites. I love that you work a cigar into your tightline nymphing game! I need to work on that. I love that you highlighted catching fish in the skinny water. Admittedly, that’s something I struggle with. This video really demonstrated how many fish can easily get passed up if you neglect those spots. As always, I appreciate the work you do. Thanks for sharing.

I'm from PA and everytime I hear you say water(wuder)it takes me back. Love it! Took me a long time to stop saying it that way myself after I moved - probably because I wasn't trying to change it. I live in the Smoky Mountains of NC now and just started fly fishing this year. Lots of good places to fish, but I'm in the putting in your dues stage of fly fishing. A nice way of saying I'm not very good yet, but I love doing it! You are really hitting them Trout. I sometimes go 4 or 5 days without catching a fish! Just started euro nymphing myself and really like the control and feel. Anyway, great channel - I really enjoy your videos and just subscribed. Appreciate the Euro tips. Your inspiring me to head back to PA to see some Family and try the fishing that way.

I was on a different river early to late and same thing, I couldn't feel my fingers. Afternoon things picked up. Lesson learned they just weren't there until if warmed up, then caught some nice fish. Thanks for sharing your observations.

You've really taught me a lot and it's upped my game for sure, so thank you!.. I'd love to see you attack a small stream where you don't have the luxury of all that room to cast.. a nice and tight small creek with shrubs and trees all around you.. i'm in Northern California and my little local spot is completely unforgiving... a lot of days i'm catching more trees than fish!.. water loading a back cast is impossible and forget an overhead.. i'm thinking about getting 7'6 3wt to help.
Anyway, it'd be great to see how you would deal with that scenario... and I think everyone would appreciate to see some .. uh.. failures every now and then.. you just make it look so easy!!..

I do fish some smaller streams-I did a video on one earlier in the year. It may not be as tight as what you experience, but I do fish some streams in the Shenandoah Park of VA that sound like some of what you experience. I love dry-dropper on those small streams and have a 7'11" 4 weight that I use a lot for that type of fishing. I think you will be better served with a shorter rod (and slower action) with a line that has a compact head that is easy to roll cast or deliver accurate casts at short distances.
I'll try to do a future video on a particular stream that sounds like what you experience.

Cory - to help viewers get better visual perspective, sometimes it might be very helpful to mention how long your casts are and what your approximate distance is from the opposite side of the stream. That way we can get a better idea of what you're doing. Just an idea to think about.

Another great video, Cory. Question for you. When you move around on the stream from a type of water to another in terms of depth or current speed, do you change fly or do you add/take off split shot? I am one of your subscribers and I haven't seen any situation where you used a split shot. I know you adjust how fast the fly to sink with beads in different weight but how about fast, gorging, and deep pocket water, like 5-6 ft deep? Do you just skip that section of water or do you add split shot? And when you add a split shot, do you add it on top of the fly or put a tippet on the fly hook and put it on that tippet?
Thank you, Masaki. All my weights are in my flies. I don’t use split shot. When I move around the stream, I constantly management my weight according to the depth/current speed/wind. I love pocket water-it’s some of my favorite to fish. I’ll never skip it (even the deep stuff). I’ll just put the appropriate weight fly on (I carry bead sizes from 2.0mm up to 4mm, even some 4.6mm). I can cover all kinds of water with those. If I were to use split shot, I would use a drop-shot method. Hope this helps.

Thank you Corey! So how do decide which rod weight/length you are going to use? You’ve mentioned you have 2 wt and 3 wt outfits with 10ft and 10ft9in rod lengths. Thanks again!
Anytime, Beaker. The rod length depends on the size of the stream. Smaller streams (30-40 ft wide or less on average), I'll use my 10 ft rod. Larger, I'll go with my 10ft 9". I use my 2wt when I know I'll be using 7x-6x tippet (which I do alot). If I am fishing heavier water, where I need more weight or if I know I'll get into a steady dose of larger fish and I may go up to 5x (think Delaware River), I'll use my 3 weight. Hope this helps.
Awesome video again! .. I have a question I notice you used the Davy knot . I have slippage with the knot . I mostly use 6x .. do you do a double Davy ? Thanks !
Thanks Joey! I use a single Davy knot all the time, even down to 8x. I’m sure you are getting slippage due to the knot being seated properly. Make sure when you seat the knot, the tag pops out at a perfect 90 degree angle. When you get that-it’s perfect. Hope this helps.

Great looking flies at the end of video. I’m tying a crawfish pattern that’s catching the bigger browns really well. It’s main features are two zonker strips for pinchers. Do you have any crawfish patterns ? Thanks!!
Thanks Chadd! Your pattern sounds great! I don't have any crawfish patterns , but I use the Honey Badger Sculpin in a natural color. I think it does a great job for imitating small crayfish. Appreciate you watching!

Great video. I’m a pin fisherman trying to get into using a fly rig and start fly fishing. My question is. Is it possible for you to explain your set up for this style of fly fishing? This is the style that intrigues me the most. I’d love to know the set up you’re running. Thanks in advance.
Appreciate it, MCT. I’ve done a video on my leader setup (the Micro Leader video). I talk about my there. My rod in this video is a T&T Contact ll, 10ft 9in 2wt.
A euro rod (10ft 3wt). Is a good start. Then the leader is key. I would suggest starting with a level 8-10# test colored suffix or amnesia to a 3x bi-colored sighter. Once you get used to this style, you can start advancing your leader formula.

Cory, I am not sure I really understand your "reach cast." When you have a minute (no hurry), would you please explain how you do the "reach cast" and why you do it (under what circumstances). I hope you have a wonderful holiday. Many Thanks, Keith
Keith, It's a cast you use when you are fishing upstream of you and to the side so you can keep everything "in line" or parallel on your drift. It keeps your sighter in front of your bugs, and is especially helpful in faster water/pocket water. You make your cast upstream and while your bugs are still in the air, you make an adjustment downstream of your bugs. If you don't do it, a lot of times your sighter will get ahead of your bugs, which is what you do NOT want.

I was just there. I'm heading back later this month and in December. I like staying up towards Altoona where the water is smaller I've caught nice brown's up there. I'll probably hit the Gorge the week of Thanksgiving. We don't live in the area anymore I live on the Breeches in Boiling Springs so the Little J is a 2.5 hr trip.

Are you using a mono rig? I can’t tell whether the line you are holding in your non rod hand is mono or fly line.
Ben, I use a micro leader with a Euro Line. Sometimes, depending on the camera angle they seem to blend together, but I do start with the Euro line in my hand after the cast.

Vincent, the road parallels the Little J for almost it's whole length (with the exception of a few areas). There are pull off areas everywhere.

Gregory, when you have water that clear (and low), you have to stay below the fish or else you will spook them. Upstream casts and fishing back to you will serve you better in these conditions. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
