those were the times when formula cars in USA and Europe looked and sounded the best. Herta vs Zanardi.. being from Europe, remember staying up late until morning hours due to the time zones, just to see these two fighting also with Vasser and Pruet etc. Supported Zanardi a bit more deep down, but loved Brian equally. Now with Colton.. this is the story of a father and a son! Happy for both of you guys. This is the true victory in the end after the checkered flag and the title of all!
IndyCar NEEDS a throwback weekend once a year where Penske, Ganassi & whoever else has them can dust-off their old Reynards, Lola's & Panoz DP01's to put on one heck of a show for the fans. Would be a massive success in my opinion!!
The CART Indycar World Series was so fantastic and arguably a legit competitor to the F1 WDC. So fantastic Colton got a chance to drive a CART Indycar. Dixon and Helio raced those cars and Power drove a Champcar. Very cool those guys are still racing!
I loved CART then and love Indycar now. If I have a complaint it's a lack of vintage racing for open wheel compared to prototype sports cars of the same era. Thanks for putting this piece together.
I know this may sound weird but I feel as though I've been gifted something, I genuinely loved being able to just see the experience between father and son
We all got a gift. There has be no HD footage of these Champ Cars going around a track in anger. The closest we got was a few years ago seeing the 94 Penske Beast at Goodwood, but it wasn't being driven as hard as Colton did in the video.
I remember watching Bryan win in that car on Eurosport here in the UK and I remember being so happy because I was a huge fan of his! Shame they couldn't do a car swap so Bryan could see what the new cars are like. Don't get me wrong, I love the cars we have now but those CART beasts were something else!!
Awesome video. You could see Helio waxing nostalgic in the hardest way. The cars of that era were the most beautiful beasts of indycar/ChampCar ever. I can even smell the burnt methanol watching this.
Being a fan of both father and son this was epic!!!! What a present from son to father and what a experience and memory for all involved! Made my day, thank you for sharing this!!!!! I'll be smiling every time I thi k about this!
The story of this car has been a real special treat of the Indycar season for me. Thank you for covering it so well. It's neat to see that so many people from the paddock were involved or at least interested there at the end - not just Bryan's old crew (and Bobby!) and Helio who would have known this car back when it was new, but it was also neat to see that Ericsson and Veekay (and some people in Arrow/Mclaren shirts) were there too. I love the current cars and think competition today is pretty great. You gotta hand it to the machines from the 90s, though, the sky was the limit for the tech at the time.
And I loved seeing Helio in on the fun. This was the video I’ve wanted to see since watching the visor cam earlier this week. And it was better than I’d hoped.
Love the piece, Marshall! Miss the sound & smells of thoes cars. I hope people will understand how special Colton is, with this great gift to his pop. Then restoring it so it can be truely driven, at pace.
Damn...that was so cool !!! Well done by everyone here. That GoPro video at the end shows us just how physical those cars were to drive fast. 900 horsepower....holy cow !
What a lovely video and such a joy to watch the helmet cam of a 1998 car in HD resolution. The part of the video with Helio joining and talking about handling of the car is awesome!!
This was awesome. Thanks for the gracious edit and letting us just sit in. Perfect. What a cool thing for everyone to do. First class. And hella fun for a lifelong fan.
Only a car nut would regard being suffocated by methanol fumes at 150 mph as "awesome". Colton is a terrific and hilarious human being. Interesting to hear Colton stress how manageable the powerband was. Despite being single-turbo, 900hp monsters, these are still designed for people to drive, and so it makes sense that the powerband wouldn't be a 5-second wait followed by a thermonuclear explosion. A cooperative car gets the best out of its driver and vice versa. Bit more massaging and that thing's gonna fly. More than it already did, anyway. I hope we get to see more of ol' Number 8. Maybe take it to the Silverstone Festival next year or goad Zak Brown into setting up a showdown between this and the McLaren MP4-13. Maybe even send it up the Goodwood hill? The Festival of Speed's already seen a PC-22 come damn close to winning the shootout.
According to Paul Tracy, the Mercedes Ilmor made gobs of power with terrible drivability. When Team KOOL Green went to Hondas, he said there was power at all parts of the RPM band.
Loved seeing this in HD quality of today’s cameras. I’ve been watching old Indycar race seasons starting from the early 90s and it would be so great to see them with today’s video quality.
So amazing!!! Thank you all for doing this and sharing this project! I still remember when Bryan was in indy lights and got to turn some laps in Mansell’s car in Phoenix
It would be amazing if IndyCar could have demonstration runs during race weekends.I love attending races but that alone would be worth the price of a ticket.
Need more coverage of their trading paint experience. Have been waiting for this since you covered the gift giving. Asked one of the Gainebridge mechanics if Bryan had gotten a track day at the second IMS road course race. He said news would be coming. Saw this car at Mid-Ohio back in the day. Too cool
I remember in Bryan’s career early on it was such a struggle, so many close calls before he finally won. Colton was the opposite where he won so young, right away. I always rooted for Bryan going back to when he drove for AJ. He was about the last American driver left in the series by the end of it.
And then F1 brings back the V12s from the 1990s. Have you even heard those? We just dead with what we get and enjoy it. Modern "silent" cars are actually a lot more family friendly I guess.
At Indy a few years ago for their vintage sportscar weekend some guy ran Jenson Button's 2007-ish F1 car. OMG....what a sound and incredible performance. We need that motor package back in a big way.@@Cloxxki
Bryan took the pole and would have won Long Beach in 98 but his tires went away in the closing laps battling Zanardi and fell to 3rd in a crash filled race.
Please please please work with HSR or Masters for a vintage Indy event somewhere. My dream would be the Texas roval on the IC weekend to see and hear these cars on the banking. I was at the night ALMS race there in August 2001 and it was a spectacular sight. Or maybe in conjunction with the HSR Sebring Spring Fling. Are there enough runners in private hands for a 1980s-1990s grid? Anyway going to the Classic Daytona 24 this November.
Helio's enthusiasm says it all about those cars
What an amazing experience! Shoutout to Helio for jumping in as well. So happy for the Herta’s
Absolutely. They was really cool to hear that interaction
Helio said, im next. Lol
This video should be titled "Bryan and Colton Herta's magical day driving a REAL Indy Car".
Long live Champ Car / CART.
God I miss those Champ Cars. They were gorgeous. So glad I was a fan of CART back then. Fun times.
The look on Helio's face. He soooo wants to get in that car! 😁
Love Helio sharing his thoughts, wild he raced full time this season and he debuted back when this car was racing.

One of the most beautiful father son moments I have ever witnessed.
Insane sound! We want this sound back.
More footage of the 98 car please!! Miss that sound so much
Lolol OMG, Helo ribbing him at the end was great. I love that the paddock is like a big family. This is an amazing story.
IndyCar NEEDS a throwback weekend once a year where Penske, Ganassi & whoever else has them can dust-off their old Reynards, Lola's & Panoz DP01's to put on one heck of a show for the fans.
Would be a massive success in my opinion!!
It's amazing to see an open cockpit again
So freaking cool hearing Bryan, Helio, and Colton talking about the car after his run. That was super super cool.
The CART Indycar World Series was so fantastic and arguably a legit competitor to the F1 WDC.
So fantastic Colton got a chance to drive a CART Indycar. Dixon and Helio raced those cars and Power drove a Champcar. Very cool those guys are still racing!
If only they had the Indy 500...CART should have beat the IRL
Loved the talk with Helio! You know he wanted to get after it in that car.
I loved CART then and love Indycar now. If I have a complaint it's a lack of vintage racing for open wheel compared to prototype sports cars of the same era. Thanks for putting this piece together.
The opening shot of that thing blasting thru start/finish is rad
Great video. It was nice to hear Colton's point view of the car one he pitted. Plus it was cool to see Helio Castroneves there too. Thanks MP!
That was way cool!
So cool to see a proper Indycar being driven in anger again! I hope they continue to run it every now and again.
High quality helmet cams of this car is just perfect. This rules all around. So cool.
I remember when Brian was a rookie! 😄😄
Me too!! aren´t we getting old?? 🤣
I know this may sound weird but I feel as though I've been gifted something, I genuinely loved being able to just see the experience between father and son

Damn those sounded soooo good!
1000hp, 12000rpm, 40 inches of boost, good old days.
I don't often comment on videos but this was amazing to see. Really something special
Tremendous video. My only complaint is it wasn’t long enough. Hoping there is a longer version coming from someone
I completely get why the Halo and windscreen are a thing but you can't deny the late 90's car looks miles better than the current ones.
Would be cool to see dad drive son's car as well...
One of the most memorable videos I’ve seen in awhile! Just incredible! And to have Helio chiming in is amazing.
I am smiling ear-to-ear watching this. Herta boys are class acts and watching this has been fantastic. CA Dreamin' baby !🏎🏁
Marshall, I think this is my favorite of all your videos. Thank you so much.
I love the Cosworth guy wearing the Champ Car shirt!
Awesome video. You could see Helio waxing nostalgic in the hardest way. The cars of that era were the most beautiful beasts of indycar/ChampCar ever. I can even smell the burnt methanol watching this.
That's some premium content right there.
Beast of a car ! Thank you for video Marshall !
Being a fan of both father and son this was epic!!!! What a present from son to father and what a experience and memory for all involved!

I've been waiting for this !!!!!! What an awesome video , thanks Colton, Bryan and also helio !!!!!!
I love how Helio downplays it by reminding Colton he's on current day option tires lol
Wow, this was a great video! And the onboard camera! I wish I could watch my old CART races in this great resolution and detail!
Hermoso ver a Helio ahi compartiendo el momento que él tambien vivio con estos autos, increible video de principio a fin!.
Those were the best days for indy car.
that was so cool when Helio stepped in and the three of them were bouncing ideas back and forth
Great to see thar car back on track again Bryan had a smile from ear to ear also Colton as well great work MP!!enjoyed watching the video
Cart Indycars ! The best racing ever. !!
Thank you Tony George.
Awesome! It would be great to see this at the Redman Festival at Road America.
I remember Champ car selling "I Love The Smell of Methanol In the Morning" shirts back in the day.
Gosh.......I really want to see Helio win a 5th Indy. That was a nice gift to dad. I remember Bryan driving that car.
Have to admit , still a CART fan with swag from back in the day..
I love that car!
What Indy SHOULD look AND sound like
What a awesome thing to do for his Dad. Glad he got to drive it and see what his Dad dealt with.
This was awesome. Thanks for the gracious edit and letting us just sit in. Perfect. What a cool thing for everyone to do. First class. And hella fun for a lifelong fan.

Colton is right about the methanol smell. It was very distinct.
Dear God I miss that sound!

Bryan você tem um filho que eu admiro não só como piloto mas como pessoa: COLTON HERTA . E que presente😢💛🖤👏🇺🇸🏁👍
So amazing!!! Thank you all for doing this and sharing this project! I still remember when Bryan was in indy lights and got to turn some laps in Mansell’s car in Phoenix

Que felicidade ver pai e filho compartilhar esse momento!
Muito bem Colton parabéns rapaz 👏👏👏👍

Never should have ditched CART, brilliant racing and great days for me running them on the dyno!
Bring back these cars, they are a million times better looking and that sound...oh yeah. Add the halo and some safety updates.
this content gives me more life! thanks thanks thanks 🙏🏼
HOW COOL !!
What a cool project and a great video.
The throttle blips!
Yes ... love it.
So awesome. Thanks for sharing this with us, MP. I was really hoping there would be one of these videos and looking forward to seeing it.

Colton is still an awesome man! Miss him
Amazing 😍
Way more beautiful and spectacular that CART than the Indy.
Man i dig those cars.
Sounds so much more like a thirsty race car, than the cars today
Cart ruled!
Colton would have been a force in that era. His raw driving skill would have been tough.
Best song !❤
Fantastic 😢❤
Just awesome stuff.
I built the Revell, Shell Reynard Brian Herta plastic model kit car.
"good track day car' .. Colton you're the Bomb!!!!
This makes me happy.
What were the lap times compared to the current car and how close was Colten to the pole time in 1998?
Awesome. Definitely if they had that going on close by to me and you could go watch I’d be there just to see it run a few laps.
Awesome stuff! 👍👍
Have to bring it to Brian Redman vintage weekend next year at Road America
If indy car were still running a similar car, people might laugh at F1.
And then F1 brings back the V12s from the 1990s. Have you even heard those?
We just dead with what we get and enjoy it. Modern "silent" cars are actually a lot more family friendly I guess.
@@Cloxxki i used to watch that era. I'm familiar.

Peak open wheel racing in America.
Fantastic!
I still prefer this to modern day Indycars.
