"GET OFF MY PLANE!" Fun Fact: Gary Oldman's performance earned him the nickname "Scary Gary" during production. However, he did not stay in character between the scenes. Wolfgang Petersen called the filming experience "Air Force Fun" because of how comedic and genial Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford would be off-screen. He also said that Gary Oldman would suddenly return to the menacing film persona instantly. Harrison Ford has since named Gary Oldman as his favorite on-screen nemesis. Also, Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman are actually hitting each other during their fight scenes.
Harrison Ford seems like such a grumpy guy during interviews and such but apparently he's great to work with. It seems like he loves acting and nothing else about the job xD.
I have to admit that, having last watched this film literally in the theater back in 1997, and having seen the “Get off my plane!” clip a ton of times since then, I was a little surprised to realize how early in the film Gary Oldman’s character (the Hans Gruber of the film) is killed, and how the final act concerns a totally different villain.
What I love most about Harrison Ford is his uncanny ability to look vulnerable while still being strong. The quivering lip here, a trembling hand there, a dazed expression, etc. if you want to see Glenn Close at her best, watch Dangerous Liaisons with John Malkovich which is superb. Great reaction.😊
Executive Decision is a good one too with Kurt Russell, John Leguizamo and more. 1996. Other Harrison Ford movies that are great are Witness, Working Girl, Patriot Games and Regarding Henry.

When the bad guys take the cockpit, the co-pilot didn't give in after they shot the captain. He was pulling the throttles back to try to force the landing.
Look at 28:24. Pause it. Oldman's characters nearly has tears in his eyes . That's what a great actor he is. He didn't play the guy as a one dimensional monster. He's a villain who's convinced he's the good guy, doing whatever it takes for his country. He doesn't want to kill the girl, and is moved by Ford prioritizing his family over his job. He can't say it, but he can show it in his eyes.
Gary Oldman plays an amazing freaking villain in this movie. Immediately they show that he is not one to f around MiG is an acronym for Mikoyan and Gurevich, the names of two Soviet aircraft designers. So basically just a Russian aircraft.

The "I'm in charge" at 8:51 was a reference to Secretary Al Haig who said the same thing after President Reagan was shot. He wasn't in charge at all since VP Bush was fine.
I still think of the F-15s hitting afterburners and the one pilot diving in front of the missile as the quintessential "America, fuck yeah" scenes, at least as far as air combat goes. Even more than Top Gun or anything :) Whether that vibe is cheesy, offensive or just cool is up to the viewer, but I can't help but do a little fist pump haha.

in the first scene we finally get with Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman together, while filming, Gary broke character and said to Harrison, "Aren't you Indiana Jones?"
8:50 That "I'm in charge" is a reference to real life events when Secretary of Defense, Alexander Haig stood up in front of the cabinet and declared “I'm in charge here" after President Ronald Reagan was shot in an assassination attempt in 1981.

From this director (Wolfgang Petersen) I can't recommend you enough his 1985 sci-fi classic "Enemy Mine"... To put it simple, one of the greatest movies ever made...
I will never not giggle at the fact that Wolfgang Petersen, who is so well known for directing _Das Boot_ and _Air Force One,_ also directed _The NeverEnding Story,_ a favorite ot mine. The man had range. 😂
A deleted scene that was taken out shows Gibbs motivation. He was former CIA and had high standing during the Cold War. He wanted General Raddick to take over and start a new Cold War so he could go back to his old job. So he gave the Clearance for Gary oldman and his men, whom he Gibbs knew from his cia days, to get on the plane.
@@miller-joel Indeed, a traitor all the way; but what patrick posted answers a question the reactors had all the film: "Gibbs is going to do something to support the hijackers?" The answer is clearly: no, for the reasons in patrick's answer: Gibbs' motivations are mostly personal ambition, not any sense of loyalty to Raddick's cause. He didn't participate in this for his idea that an all antiamerican Kazakhstan is the way of the future for the region (thus, he is not going to become a martir and out himself killing the president in front of witnesses). A side note: we could argue that, even in their despicable actions, Gary Oldman's group had a bit more "honor" in their objectives than Gibbs (after all, they where really in it because they believed in that cause). "I can't believe a person in that position would betray everything just for a job..." It's not unheard of (not to that scale), but during Cold War some members of the intelligence in the United States did sell state secrets to the USSR and defected under the promise of "more prestigious positions" in shaping a world not fully dominated by the United States (of course, in many of those cases some pre existing political beliefs that USSR was the best leader of the world played a role in those incidents). And that's just speaking of the Cold War era, we can trace betrayals all over history for jobs... or even less (like the case of Benedict Arnold, that tried to surrender West Point during the Independence War of the United States, and had to eventually defect to Great Britain, because he ambitioned to be recognized as a great soldier and strategist... and, eventually, never got what he ambitioned, on either side). Nontheless in political fiction, there's always been the fear that the worst enemy of any security system is personal ambition; the moment you may piss a person in a sensible position, whose ego is bigger than its sense of duty/patriotism... that's a potential recipie for disaster.
@@jp3813 technically still in the 90's. there is no year 0, so every decade starts with a year ending in 1 and ends with a year ending in 0; 1st decade 1 - 10, 2nd decade 11 - 20, etc.
Gary Oldman is one of my favorite actors. My favorite maybe 10 to 15 minute role he was in was True Romance where he plays a Jamaican Drug Lord. He is just an amazing actor
Harrison Ford does play a villain in some movies. The thing is, he's usually someone people won't think is a villain, so that's how he's used in those movies. That's why I can't really tell you what movies they are without ruining the movies.
One of the best cinema experiences I've had. I was 14 and my mum got free tickets, we had no idea what it was about, just that Harrison Ford was in it.
My extended family went out to see this in the dollar theater on Black Friday the year it came out. My dad and uncle were both aeronautical engineers who worked for the FAA… They spent the whole movie griping to each other about how nothing in an airplane works that way. Bullets should be blowing holes in the fuselage, etc. 🤣
I was thinking, best course of action might have been the moment he got that first gun off a bad guy, turn and put a round through a window and decompress the entire cabin. Deny that habitable space from the enemy, force an immediate landing or altitude reduction.
Radek is indeed played by Jürgen Prochnow, the captain of "Das Boot". He is a close personal friend of Wolfgang Petersen, which is why he accepted the part which could only be payed as a cameo (which is why he doesn't have any lines).
One of my favorite films from the summer of 1997. Much like Independence Day (1996), we were given a U.S. president that spoke truth with heart and as an former soldier, no holding back in kicking some serious a**. Gary Oldman in the 1990s was one of the greatest actors to play villains and as fanatic Egor Korshunov, perfect. Glenn Close as the first-lady vice president (a first on film, pre-Kamala Harris) felt really believable in how she handled the situation. The two main separate-sets, AFO (airborne) and Situation Room (on the ground) are directed very well. The camerawork matches and moves along every space perfectly just as they are IRL. I like the action sequences between the aerial battles and the confrontations on AFO, especially with Ford doing most of it and just being the rugged actor he is. Lastly, Harrison Ford as P.OT.U.S. is considered to be one of many beloved presidential portrayals (why not?). It's because Ford can pull off real performances in action/suspense films and nothing wrong with that. Hopefully you'll check out other classics by The late Wolfgang Petersen:Shattered (1991), In The Line of Fire (1993) with Clint Eastwood, The Perfect Storm (2000) with Wahlberg & Clooney and the remake of The Poseidon Adventure aka Poseidon (2006).
The Ramstein sequence was filmed at Rickenbacker Airport in Ohio with a REAL PLANE. Also, at some point two F-18s showed up and incredulously reported "It's Air Force One with bullet holes in it!" The air controller knew about the filming and set them straight. The 'bullet holes' were decals.
Great movie. One of Harrison Ford great movies. You should see it other great movies like Frantic, Firewall and his Jack Ryan movies . Also a great Drama with Harrison Ford is Regarding Henry. Other great airplane movies are Executive Decision , Passenger 57 and Flight Plan.
I forgot completely that there was supposed to be a joint U.S.-Russian operation at the start of this movie...Heavens we were optimistic about the future of U.S.-Russian relations in 1997.
This was the first movie I watched with my first Dolby Digital set-up. I had a surround speaker near a back door, and I kept pausing the disc to check if someone was outside every time I heard things coming from that speaker. Great movie. Wolfgang Peterson also directed In the Line of Fire and A Perfect Storm, both of which I enjoy!
A year before Air Force One, the underrated Executive Decision with Kurt Russell, Steven Seagal, and a somewhat similar premise (but very different execution) was released.
If y'all want to find out more of the story and characters, I'd recommend y'all check out the novelization that did for the movie as it covers more things about the character's backgrounds and motivations, especially why Gibbs did what he did!
Definitely one of my favourite action/thrillers that I’ve watched multiple times…..and the dogfight with the Migs is such a rush! ‘Outbreak’ starring Dustin Hoffman and Rene Russo is another favorite from the 90’s I’d love to see you watch.
When the fifth highest grossing film of its year with two Academy Award nominations headlining a star at the peak of his career is called...underrated by at least four people in the comments section almost thirty years later. Not every film that doesn't get Best Picture is underrated guys. Plenty of films are just really good and well-remembered. Air Force One doesn't fly under the radar. Brick, Thoroughbreds, Green Room, Good Bye Lenin, etc. those are underrated. Those are independent films headlining stars new to the scene or just before or after their peak (or before they died). Air Force One is decidedly not underrated.
That moment dracula, the djinn and a powerful salem witch attempt to hijack air force one to rescue the captain of das boot and face off against han solo, cruella de ville, al from project quantum leap and dr simon tarses
Harrison Ford plays negative characters in The Conversation (1974), The Mosquito Coast (1986), and What Lies Beneath (2000). Who ever imagined that a second Ford Administration would be exciting?
16:55 I love the idea that the hijacker maybe just thinks the president carries around a pocketful of tiny people that cheer whenever he introduces himself.
You really need to add The Perfect Storm, In The Line Of Fire, What Lies Beneath, and the other Jack Ryan movies to your watch list. You would enjoy them all.
Ah, the movie lovingly referred to as "Die Hard on a Plane", truly one of the greatest action films of the 90s. Fun fact, there isn't really an escape pod on Air Force One, but Bill Clinton tried to have one added after seeing this.

never saw the movie but we had to read the book in 4th grade. in 4th grade we read a bunch of newbery award winning books.
They messed with the wrong President on this flight, as he's a former Vietnam War veteran! It's "DIE HARD" meets Rambo" meets "Passenger 57".
Hey that's Jerry goldsmith!
Air Force One is one of the best action films ever made. Also don't forget for all the great work he has done Harrison Ford has NEVER won an Oscar.
There was a point when Harrison Ford had starred in six of the top 10 grossing films of all time. Three Star Wars. Three Indiana Jones.
From this director (Wolfgang Petersen) I can't recommend you enough his 1985 sci-fi classic "Enemy Mine"... To put it simple, one of the greatest movies ever made...
That's a good movie, with the late Louis Gossett, Jr and Dennis Quaid.
I will never not giggle at the fact that Wolfgang Petersen, who is so well known for directing _Das Boot_ and _Air Force One,_ also directed _The NeverEnding Story,_ a favorite ot mine. The man had range. 😂
I just love the one interview with him where he says: "Why am I spending my time in a cramped tube AGAIN?"
I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
@@miller-joel Indeed, a traitor all the way; but what patrick posted answers a question the reactors had all the film: "Gibbs is going to do something to support the hijackers?"
The answer is clearly: no, for the reasons in patrick's answer: Gibbs' motivations are mostly personal ambition, not any sense of loyalty to Raddick's cause.
"I can't believe a person in that position would betray everything just for a job..."
It's not unheard of (not to that scale), but during Cold War some members of the intelligence in the United States did sell state secrets to the USSR and defected under the promise of "more prestigious positions" in shaping a world not fully dominated by the United States (of course, in many of those cases some pre existing political beliefs that USSR was the best leader of the world played a role in those incidents).

One of the reasons it was taken out was it didn’t go well with the test audiences whom had the same thinking.
@@DocuzanQuitomos
Good examples
Jurgen Procnow is General Raddik. He says not a word but Is a well known actor
Kinda harsh to not give him a line 😒
@@LtDan-rk4si But they get paid better when they do...
Its not surprising he's in it considering he worked with the same director in Das Boot.
@@GhostWatcher2024Yup
Sam was so offended that you've never seen Stepford Wives lol
One of my all time favorites. Love Harrison, love airplanes and love political thrillers 😅
You guys definitely need to do What Lies Beneath, Enemy of the State, and Conspiracy Theory. There's so many great 90s movies.
What Lies Beneath came out in 2000.
@@jp3813 technically still in the 90's. there is no year 0, so every decade starts with a year ending in 1 and ends with a year ending in 0; 1st decade 1 - 10, 2nd decade 11 - 20, etc.
@@CroMagJohnson Yeah, but pop culture operates differently. Nobody says that John Lennon died in the 70s, or that The Beatles broke up in the 60s.
@@jp3813 of course, which is why i said "technically." it doesn't make it any less true.
@@CroMagJohnson It ain't really a matter of true or false but rather relevance to the context of pop culture.
😂😂😂😂
35:31 that sacrifice move gets me every time. Happy New Year everyone.
I rarely wanted the bad guys to die horribly so hard. This movie was so well done.
Harrison ford is iconic
I miss watching movies with people, you guys are the next best thing. Keep doing what you do. Really enjoyed that one.
Thanks for the info.
The daughter is played by Liesel Matthews is a member of the Pritzker family. She has a net worth of over a Billion dollars.
Yup.
Love this movie
True in the movie, when the President is on another US plane, it becomes Air Force One.
I have a laser disc of Airforce One that I use as a mirror on my wall.
Lol I just watched this the other night. It was one of my dad's favorite movies. That's for reacting to this!
I forgot completely that there was supposed to be a joint U.S.-Russian operation at the start of this movie...Heavens we were optimistic about the future of U.S.-Russian relations in 1997.
Yup. Good point
*Executive Decision* (1996) is a similar movie, and equally good, imo. Great cast, too.
Yup.
Also the same year another airplane move was released: Turbulence. The 1997 movie starring Ray Liotta and Lauren Holly
One of the 90s awesome movies ever!! Together with The Fugitive, Die Hard with a vengeance
If y'all want to find out more of the story and characters, I'd recommend y'all check out the novelization that did for the movie as it covers more things about the character's backgrounds and motivations, especially why Gibbs did what he did!
I like to imagine this is an unoficcial sequel to Ford's Jack Ryans movies!
Along with Agent Pierce and George Mason from 24.
(Albeit, the latter being a double agent.)
The actress playing the daughter is actually a billionaire heiress
Yup. She's related to IL Governor Pritzker.
Presumed Innocent (1990)
Yup. One of my favorite movies!
Harrison Ford plays negative characters in The Conversation (1974), The Mosquito Coast (1986), and What Lies Beneath (2000). Who ever imagined that a second Ford Administration would be exciting?
Quite the rat in Presumed Innocent.
@@kaykutcher2103 Greta Scacchi ... what can I say.
That president is badass walking around with that MP5 😎
Ah, the movie lovingly referred to as "Die Hard on a Plane", truly one of the greatest action films of the 90s.
Fun fact, there isn't really an escape pod on Air Force One, but Bill Clinton tried to have one added after seeing this.
The soundtrack is amazing.
Yup.
Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt in :
“The Devils Own”
good movie, action, drama !
It’s basically Die Hard on a Plane. Still an enjoyable film.
Yup. Sudden Death is basically Die Hard at a Hockey Game.
Isn't that Passenger 57?
@SuRoFo It's both movies.
One of the top presidents in film history!
I know it's not this movie but you MUST also see What Lies Beneath!! Harrison Ford is a legend!!
For a non action Harrison Ford movie, I would recommend "Regarding Henry".
