They were claimed for business purposes. Since large-scale private companies for the most part didn't exist, those claims were meant to protect the government's fur traders and gold miners in the area, instead of settlers. However, due to the campaigns of Bernardo de Galvez in Florida, Spain was able to get Florida back at the peace talks in 1783.
At the beginning of the war Florida was British. Spain had lost it in 1763 Florida and what is now Missisipi and Alabama as compensation for the British to return Havana and Manila in the Philippines. +CARNETH PAX Do yourself a favour and check when I uploaded this and when Ollie Bye did, and you should also look at the other comments on this video. (Hint he commented here.)
According to myth, the rebels were simply supposed to stir up the hornet's nest, for the king to take notice. The little peons weren't supposed to win. But the spirit of liberty (and what appeared to be a gift of a fair amount of gold from descendants of displaced Israelites) put a "wild card" into the game. That gold helped the rebels to obtain weapons and materials which tipped the scale to victory. About 150 years later descendants of the rebels (which officially became the new superpower), helped descendants of the benefactors to get their nation back.
"Patriots and Allies" should read "Rebels and Allies", or "traitors and allies". The war should never have happened. Britain was listening to colonial concerns and trying to address them. They offered representation, but nothing satisfied the rebels. Canadians were happy remaining loyal to the Empire. Britain could have crushed the rebellion if their hearts were in it, as rebels only accounted for 40% of the colonies one million population, at a time London, alone, had almost one million. The Anglo-sphere is family, and family should stick together.
britain had become too weakened from unnecessary involvement in two world wars to maintain its empire. far from the champion of the british empire, churchill was instrumental in its tragic downfall. had the anglosphere played its cards right, they could have waited out the war, until both sides were exhausted, and then swept from the atlantic to the pacific, bringing peace and democracy to the world. such a pity the british empire never achieved its full potential. furthermore, britain was on a path to complete self-destruction, until brexit. sad. just sad.
superkiwistar Colonists were tired of their so called "sovereign" being a thousand miles away and dictating what was best for them, subjects who more likely than not have not had family on the Isles on generations. Of course they revolted, they got tired of fighting and paying for the British Empire's wars.
yep. britain should have absorbed the cost of war better. they gave in to many of the demands, and allowed representation, but americans would not see reason. there are trade benefits to being part of a greater empire. 20% of americans wanted to remain british, and 40% couldn't care either way. pity they didn't stick together. it would have formed a great empire. on the plus side, it motivated britain to colonise australia and the south pacific instead, so the anglo-saxon influence continued to spread.
and btw ... australia and new zealand are further from britain. yet, they remain loyal, with a union jack in the corner of the flag, and the queen on the currency.
Yes, and that is all well and good for them, but you're defending imperialism now. Empire's were great for those at the top, not so much for common subjects. Americans did not see themselves as British, even many loyalists saw themselves as "Americans" who supported the British crown. Remaining loyal to a figurehead isn't something to gloat about, and I am sure Americans would rather have their own flag without the union jack, than to be considered a subject of a dead empire that was consumed by greed.
Victor Fernandez where would america be if we were still part of the British Empire? I would imagine we would have gone to war with them when The UK declared war on Germany. But then we'd be living in a completely alternate reality and who knows how history would have gone if the Revolutionary War never would have happened. The French Revolutions in the early 1800s probably wouldn't have happened and Napolean probably wouldn't have taken over Europe. We probably wouldn't have found the Rosetta Stone being able to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs, who knows wtf would have happened.

Washington also had an immensely successful spy ring operating out of British-controlled Long Island.
Washington may have been a relatively poor tactician, but he was a decent strategist. He allowed the Brits to control the coasts where the Royal Navy could support them, but denied them the countryside in the interior. Fighting campaigns of attrition and gradually wearing them down. The same "Fabian Strategy" that the Romans successfully used to wear down Hannibal, before he was decisively defeated by Scipio Africanvs.
The Brits were aware of and used Guirella tactics to great extent.
Poor britan

According to myth, the rebels were simply supposed to stir up the hornet's nest, for the king to take notice. The little peons weren't supposed to win. But the spirit of liberty (and what appeared to be a gift of a fair amount of gold from descendants of displaced Israelites) put a "wild card" into the game. That gold helped the rebels to obtain weapons and materials which tipped the scale to victory. About 150 years later descendants of the rebels (which officially became the new superpower), helped descendants of the benefactors to get their nation back.
betaatomic no
betaatomic you can’t be any more wrong
Spain, France, Haiti, and the US should have our own NATO.
THINK TWICE BEFORE TAXING THE SHIT OUT OF US
Also, the main cause of the war was not taxes, but rather the tea act.
All y’all watching gay
and so are you
"Patriots and Allies" should read "Rebels and Allies", or "traitors and allies".
Wish the British would have won, would have universal healthcare at least
Nah
JesusChrist but then in WWII. Where tf would America be?! Yeeeaaahhh.... right.
JesusChrist I'm confused whyd you switch to the French Revolution, and the Rosetta Stone? All I said is where would America be in WW2 yeaahh....
JesusChrist Socialism doesnt work.
