The Mongols conquered them The Germans knocked them out of World War One The trick to beating the Russians is 1. don't attack them when they are unified and 2. Equip your goddamn troops for winter. It'll be there. The Finns handed the Russians their ass but eventually had to quit due to sheer numbers but ended up more or less favourably. The Russians did not have their hearts in it (it was not a defensive war) and the Finns were even better prepared for winter. The Poles sent them packing in the 1920s. The Poles battered the Red Army and rope-a-doped for a bit. The Russians were decisively defeated by the Japanese in 1904-05 in Port Arthur and the Far East.
john hannibal None of those were a decisive loss for the Russians. Poland and Finland was just a hiccup in their conquest of reclaiming lost land. The Germans didn’t knock them out of the war either, revolution was inevitable. Even if Lenin wasn’t there, Trotsky could have probably done it himself or Lenin could have left Switzerland himself. Russia didn’t exist when the mongols invaded

Ollie, I usually look at mapping videos to find inaccuracies and mishaps but this, I must say was very detailed and beautiful. Thank you for your hard work my friend. Vive la France.
''Relations with Spain quickly deteriorate during the operation, eventually leading to Spain switching sides, and ultimately the Peninsular War'' Hold on, are you suggesting that Spain switched side for no reason at all? Spain switched side because napoleon betrayed Spain, when Spain let napoleon's troops pass through to take over portugal, they took over Spain instead, beggining the Spanish war of Independence.
I feel so upset about this. If we didn't betray Spain who was friendly to us we could've propably won these wars. We lost too many manpower during the Peninsular War.
I have to say that France was the one who declared war to Spain. The French armies were suppossed to march to Portugal via the Burgos route, but they began marching into towns as far as Zaragoza. Later in 1808, Ferdinand, the son of Charles III of Spain made a coup (Aranjuez Mutiny). Seeing that there was no resolution on that, Napoleon convocated both of them at Bayonne, where Ferdinand abdicated in Charles, and Charles abdicated in Joseph, Napoleon's brother. However, there were members of the royal family in Madrid, and when the French forces entered Madrid and kidnapped the young prince, the Spaniards attacked the French (2 of May uprising).
Poivre VideoMapping ツ - History & Fiction The Third of May of Madrid, the siege of Zaragoza, the occuppation itself (People were forbidden to go out of home when it came dark and where forced to feed the French Napoleonic army, if they refused they were executed). Hundreds of villages and towns burnt in purpose (Játiva, San Marcial, for example), the capture of the royal family (that was taken as a personal offense).
@George S "ultimately beaten by british" he says. Don't listen your english teacher, you learn bullshit. Prussia defeated France ! Not the british. The british, without the help of prussia would loose.
@George S British army at Waterloo. 31 regiments. 10 spoke English. The others speak german. The people of Germany have been always the only , yes only , to know how to defeat the French single-handedly.
@@Raisonnance. Wow surprising news... /s The British always needed their allies in order to win lol. England + Portugal vs Spain, The UK + France vs German Empire. The UK + half of the world vs Nazi Germany.
I gotta say from all mapping videos this one is the best by far. Its very detailed and the music fits so well. The end where the French Empire falls was the most epic part.
It took 5 coalitions and almost all of Europe to defeat one country and one man. Even today, military strategists and scholars alike study Napoléon's battle tactics, as he was one of the best military conquerors known to man. Towards the end of his rule, Napoléon became very ill, which many believe to be why France was ever defeated at all.
Colour SGT Bourne I know, just talking about the real decisive defeat. In Waterloo France was already on the verge of losing, even if they won they would have to face the rest of the allies.
Yes , because having a strategical advantage and exploiting that by building the largest, most unbeatable navy of it's time, makes you a coward. Remember kids; War is totally meant to be fair.
I don't think he spoke about the canal making british known as cowards, more about the fact the british run away a lot in their history and often abandon their allies.
Romans: better to not get In Russia, too cold and dangerous. Empire lives for over 1000 years Napoleon: let's Invade Russia! empire falls down immediately Hitler: let's Invade Russia! Empire falls down in 3 years.
Napoleon is remembered as Europe's trauma. For USA an ally. For Latin America as a warrior (his invasion of Spain helped us gain independence). Damn and to think a short man did this.
Yeah, that’s how they have brainwashed you to think thanks to the Spain’s Black Legend that mainly the Anglo Saxons spread (along with the French), through propaganda to destroyed a solid an rich Hispanoamerica (the term “Latinoamerica” was invented by a Frenchman named Michel Chevalier in the nineteen century and it’s nonsense), to turned into pieces, fight against each other and became poor, no by the Spanish like your school books make you believed. They lost territories to United States in the north and to Brazil in the south, and became basically a mess thanks to the British, mainly, which were behind all the independence scheme. It’s a shame that you portrayed Napoleon as a kind of hero instead of the bastard that he really was (not just regarding Spain, but other European fellows as well). By the way, later on in that same century France tried to conquered Mexico, so I wouldn’t be that blindly grateful to the French.
Short man? At that time, 5.2ft were not the same wether you counted them in UK or in France: in the former country, it meant 1.58m, while in the latter, it was circa 1.69m. Not impressive today, but, the average in France was about 5.45ft/ 1.66m... in 1900; Napoleonian wars took place on 1800-1815, so 100 years before he was just 2cm above average. On the other hand, his imperial guards were expected to have at least 6ft/1.83m of height, so it is quite easy to say he was short, and one should not forget Englishmen were always trying to belittle him (pun intended 🙃)
Marcus Titus Yeah he lost but he was still one of the best military officers of all time. Napoleon lost too. Carthage in entirety yeah but the Romans learned from Hannibal, they watched him and used his own plans against him.
@@meltedicecreamsandwich I remember the general of Macedonia which won a war against Persia. 30000 Greeks against more than 200000 Persians. So no, for me Napoleon was not the best general. Also he lost, the macedonias not.

Great video ! but just a lttle mistke. Spain didin't switch side, actualy the king of spain was Joseph, Napoléon brother. It was a Guerilla, a war by the poeple ! The actuelle war is call "the spanish independance war"
spain colapsed and was rulled by napoleon brother ... guerrilleros(isolated armies of spain) fought along the army of portugal commanded by wellington (note: it was the name of wellingtons army wich included the portuguese army and british troops)
Since the 16th century? Spain started to decline in the 18th century, not the 16th. In the 16th adn 17th century Spain was the major power in Europe and the world. Also, about Wellington army. That was not the only army, as said before, there were isolated armies in Spain that should not be belittle, since they won most of the first battle against France. Actually, they won the very FIRST battle against the Napoleonic Empire, led by a Spanish general. And also, the first years the English and Portuguese didn't helped the Spanish at all, quite the opposite, they would do anything possible to ignore Spain's ask for help, or actually say they would help and in the last moment back up on their word, apart from the raping, sacking and burning of Spanish cities after "liberating" them from the French invaders. More than helpful, they were a burden, to put it midly, but they were really just another invading and destructive force (and it is well known that their intention was to actually invade Spain after expelling the French, they just concluded that it wouldn't be that easy and let it be). It is indeed when Wellington was finally in charge that things changed for the better, but he was not in charge from the very beginning.
But then we epically crushed your ass at Leipzig and again at Waterloo, where Blücher lured a huge part of your army away from Wellington and then ended up attacking the main army facing Wellington in the rear. Basically what won Waterloo.
SuperMrFriendly The irony... Blücher, who probably got crushed by Napoleon more than any general came at the right moment to win the last battle of the war
Crushing our ass at Leipzig...the allied losses were largely superior than the french ones, The allied were superior in number, they had better rifles, and they still suffered heavy defeats, like Dresde.
France: Russia I can explain Russia: You betrayed me and went for Moscow! Spain: You betrayed and slaughtered my nation and prompted my colonies to get independence! Austria: You guys were allies with him?

@@gutsjoestar7450 the Russians especially disrespected Napoléon, Napoléon wanted to marry the younger sister of Alexander tsar the first, but he rejected it because Napoléon was a nobody, peasant, a plotter, some mad guy.
During the Napoleonic wars the british decided to be caustious, and let their allies get killed for them in order to soften up Napoleon. After hundreds of thousands of Austrians Russians Prussians and Spaniards have died, they move in, having their ass narrowly saved by the prussians at Waterloo..The British, frustred by their lack of heroism proceed to develop some atrocious propaganda such as the Sharpe and Hornblower series .
I have to look into that, and it appears this isn't the only war that it happens in. WW2 is a notable candidate were the British betrayed Poland, France and Soviet Union.
Yep, had Portugal accepted Napoleon's ultimatum and cut all trade with England like every other European country had done, the British would have been starved to death before they could even fight Napoleon. Because Portugal didn't accept it, Napoleon invaded and the Royal Family fled to Brazil, while the army and people resorted to guerrilla warfare against the French. The British then arrived to Portugal and with the help of the Portuguese pushed Napoleon back into France. Once Napoleon was defeated, the Portuguese Empire was in shambles, since we had spent all our money in the war, and shortly thereafter Brasil fought and gained independence, and after that, to add insult to injury, Portugal entered into a civil war. Through all of that the British decided to help many of our enemies, buy our most profitable companies and destroy our textile industry, the backstabbing bastards.
Yes but if Napoleon had invaded Portugal as he wanted, a Bonaparte would become king of your kingdom (because the official king was in Brazil) and Portugal had a powerful fleet, a weapon between the hands of the French but the objective of the French invasion was to close the continental gate what Portugal was for the British. You had the British support, they had your minas de ouro...in Brazil !
+paul Men don't forget that Spain had secretely signed an alliance with Prussia just before the Fourth Coalition. In 1808, the son of the king of Spain, Ferdinand VII, was making a coup d'état at Aranjuez. Ferdinand was anti-french, and he could easiky enter in war against France with thr support of Portuguese and British troops. The invasion was a sort of preventive attack. If you were on our place, you will not think differently.
+L' ATOMISEUR Spain wasn't traitor, then could you explain me the reason because Joseph Bonaparte tried to be king of Spain?. Spain let France get into Spain for invading Portugal, but they ended invading Spain xD
It was Napoléon who placed Joseph on the Spanish throne, Joseph wants to remain the king of Naples... The goal of Napoléon was to secure the south border of France ...
@FritoSalad Portugal and Spain continued fighting without their capitals, Portugal didn't even have a Royal family to lead them, since they had fled to Brazil.

+miguel matias Yes almost perfect. The only thing I regret is that there no text mentionning the battle of Leipzig, the deciding battle of the war (and the biggest battle in Europe prior to WW1).
Austria's constant war with France was what brought down Napoleon. While other European monarchies bowed down to him, he had to pour countless men and resources at fighting the Habsburg realm, getting beat at Aspern and could've been defeated at Wagram even. France was near collapse before Bonaparte's Italian campaigns that ended the Revolutionary Wars. "Utterly smashed" lol. Do you study history, or are you a kid who just repeats what he sees in cringe internet memes?
Britain was the only country constantly at war with France , if there hadn't been an EU maybe the Brits and the French would still be tearing chunks from each other.
@@cs0345 Britain know it. A France in peace take over. This is natural. An Europe at war and nobody can take care on colonies , better defend the homeland.
Spain switched sides after napoleon tricked them in the treaty of Fountainebleu saying that he wanted to go through Spain to invade Portugal and he started an invasion in Spain instead, after that, the independence war starts (2nd may 1808)
Its so satisfying to play Napoleon Total War as a France and conquer the whole Europe, with old guards leading the charge.. Final attack is saved for the British. They are destroyed but Ireland and Scotland are freed from their imperial overlords.
Napoleon's biggest mistake was setting up the Continental System. Without it, there would have been no reason to invade Spain or Russia. All he had to do was keep beating the coalitions; and eventually, Britain would have sued for peace because they wouldn't have been able to afford funding endless coalitions.

The Mongols conquered them
The Germans knocked them out of World War One
The trick to beating the Russians is 1. don't attack them when they are unified and 2.
The Russians were decisively defeated by the Japanese in 1904-05 in Port Arthur and the Far East.
john hannibal
None of those were a decisive loss for the Russians. Poland and Finland was just a hiccup in their conquest of reclaiming lost land. The Germans didn’t knock them out of the war either, revolution was inevitable. Even if Lenin wasn’t there, Trotsky could have probably done it himself or Lenin could have left Switzerland himself.

''Relations with Spain quickly deteriorate during the operation, eventually leading to Spain switching sides, and ultimately the Peninsular War''
Hold on, are you suggesting that Spain switched side for no reason at all?

Napoleon is remembered as Europe's trauma. For USA an ally. For Latin America as a warrior (his invasion of Spain helped us gain independence). Damn and to think a short man did this.
Yes...
@@LorianR what tf are you taking about lol, seems like your very ignorant from where I'm coming from.
On the other hand, his imperial guards were expected to have at least 6ft/1.83m of height, so it is quite easy to say he was short, and one should not forget Englishmen were always trying to belittle him (pun intended 🙃)

spain very weak since 16th century, the only time were spain wa sstrong was during the reign of the holy roman emperor charles 5.

You're european ?
