  • In this art tutorial video I use my extensive art teaching experience to show beginners how to start drawing by learning basic drawing techniques in a simple step by step approach.This Starting Drawing tutorial is the first in a series of art tutorials for absolute beginners to drawing. It covers 4 things that you need to know to start drawing with confidence. The video talks about getting into a positive frame of mind. It also covers paper, how to use your hand when holding a pencil and how to sharpen and use pencils creatively.
    This easy drawing tutorial explains how to vary the line you draw by twisting your hand and applying different pressure. It shows you how to make the lines you draw look more creative. Hatching and cross hatching are also explained. In the next video I shall bring all these elements together to create our first drawing. Understanding the 4 things explained in the video will allow beginners to draw with confidence. The art tutorial will be useful for anyone starting to draw.

      That's great. If you think about it people pay vasts sums of money for a Van Gogh drawing, because it is unique. The problem with 'realistic' 'photographic' drawing is, where is the individuality? It is just the demonstration of a skill, it's not art. Paul

    I think I'm at an intermediate level with my drawing skills going towards advanced but I truly enjoyed this video. It made me happy and gave me a positive feeling.
    Lately I've been way too caught up with trying to make the perfect drawings for my portfolio, being too focused on the technical aspects, trying to get the perfect lines and so on that it brought me in a point where I got stuck, where even starting a drawing felt like a chore. I lost sight of what drawing and art are all about. This is a nice reminder.
    I've been following you for a while and I want to thank you for your video and your positive attitude! It brings me joy and it's exactly what I needed now to keep going

    I've been a creative thinker since I was a lot younger, by the influence of my older sister, but we stopped drawing in general and lost our touch with drawing. I started watching your channel god knows how long ago and noticed some changes with the shading and tone of my drawings :)
    I drew really well for one of my artworks and used the knowledge I gained from that video of you drawing a cliff with different lines and then the little pit at the bottom of it. I was told that it would have looked better with a background, though.
    Thank you, truly, for helping my growth as an artist.

    Your videos are all amazing! I used to sketch and draw during my high school days, but then I disregard it since I never pursue studying Fine Arts 'coz my parents won't support me for it financially. Now going back to my output before, I could barely start doing it again. My hands were too tight and got no drive to draw it, until I am now teaching Contemporary Arts in Senior High School and after seeing your videos, it gives me so much drive to unleash again somehow the skill that I tend to forgot long time ago. After 19 years I'm loving to embrace art again and even used your videos in my class. Thank you so much, I know I am just one of your avid fan here whose so grateful of your videos.

    • @PaulPriestleyart
      @PaulPriestleyart  4 года назад +1

      The details are the least important part of a drawing. Grab a pencil, set up a small group of objects and in one minute draw the whole lot as big as possible. You must draw the whole thing and no detail. Go for it and enjoy the act of drawing. Smile while you are drawing, it's the most important part.

    Excellent video! Very encouraging. Been thinking for years about trying to draw but never managed to get going. Was giving it a try last year but gave up after like a week. Am a perfectionist and so critical which makes it hard to keep at it. It's just exhausting and not fun when you are never happy about what you produce. Don't think anything I draw looks good.
    Will go and buy some paper tomorrow and give it another go. Will try following along this video series. Hopefully I can stick with it this time. Will try and not do advanced drawings right away and not try and focus on how it looks.
    One other issue though is I get backpain when drawing using a desk. So hard to not lean in to see better. That was also a big reason for me giving up last year. Haven't tried a tilted surface though. Perhaps that can fix it? Seems like it would help posture.

    • @PaulPriestleyart
      @PaulPriestleyart  3 года назад +1

      Really pleased you have enjoyed my video. I'm something of a perfectionist too but, as far as drawing is concerned there is no such thing as perfection. Remember, no one in the world draws like you do, feel proud of that. It's the feeling and passion you put into the drawing that's the important thing. Just do it!! You might be better off standing with a vertical easel, takes some getting used to and your arm may get tired, but your back will benefit.
