Building a Vitrine Train Display for ROLL-IN / ROLL-OUT operation

- In this video we´re builing a vitrine wall display with de-attachable shelfs which allows for easy ROLL-IN and ROLL-OUT of entire model trains on your Model Railroad. The presented method is modular, which means the size of the display and thereby the length and quantity of the trains can be adopted to your own needs.
This Vitrine Display can be used in conjunction with the Martinstown layout to allow for train storage and expanded freight- and passenger operations.
Total build time is about 8 hours.
Total cost about €60.

Display Frame material:
Spruce 15x56mm
-Top, Bottom, Fixed shelfs: 601mm long
-Sides: 333mm long
Display removable shelfs:
Spruce 8x43mm
-All: 600mm long
Poly Carbonate Clear Plastic sheets:
Front glass: 90 x 600mm
Rear glass: 85 x 600mm
Screws:
• Frame assembly: 25 x 3,5mm recessed
• Pull-out knobs: 25 x 2,5mm
PVA-glue (Cola Blanca / Ponal / Elmer constr)
Double sided transparent adhesive tape.
Fast set glue (Cyano Acrylat).
Acryllic paint (Black).
Acryllic varnish hi gloss.

I find this channel a treasure. I am not into model railroad in practice but I recognize a master at something when watching these videos and what a cheerful guy he seems to be!
(In my book he should be sponsored by most of the model railroad manufacturers, he get some free stuff, but i mean a salary for his promotion of this hobby.)

Martin, this was a great video. It was well made and explained in detail how to make the display with all dimensions. These units can also be used to turn a train around. I model steam and sometimes this is needed because the old steam trains might not have a front coupler. I have my own design of this type of shelf, but I am going to have to think about it because your design is simpler to build.

This looks amazing. My trains are a lot longer than that an use a "Nelevator" as my fiddle yard which is a similar concept to this. I am however contemplating building one of these to display my trams from my Newcastle Central Station layout.

Perfect timing Martin as I have been looking at how I can display my locos and coaches in fixed formations. I was wondering how you would fix the perspex and its a good solution with the different heights, and with my OCD I would try and find some nice knobs/buttons to pull the shelves. I also bought a pillar drill last year from Lidl so now I have a good project to use it. Thanks so much for all this, it is great inspiration. 🤗

In theatre we built flats for stage sets (i kept my school project one and added shelves to it using thin strips of Luan wood) being that its a flat it 3-4ft long and 2 ft high if i remember right. instead of PVA glue we used carpenters glue (yellow) its stronger, but then again we need it for stage use not trains I never got around to getting a big enough plexiglass to use as a sliding door case and i still need to find a place for the monster thing lol. your idea of individual glass units is cool I thought you would have it incorporated into the layout yard and built a motorized elevator type feature for the flat/frame

Nice idea. I guess gluing the shelves to the rear panel helps prevent them sagging over time and the perspez will add some strength but there might be a max train length eg 1200mm.
You could split the train and put one half above the other

nice video and a really good idea, but why does he not put a stop boom at the end so the train can not slide over the edge, it amazes me, I will do that when I have to build it. but otherwise good idea as roll on roll of ferry

This might be a totally unreasonable suggestion. But bare with me.
What about having a double walled box with a semi reflective background. Then have a led strip light up the background when you need to see.
Then having 3 or 4 boxes next to each other with swiches between, making it possible to drive in and out of the cases.
I like what you did, but I have a few questions. First of all how thick was the polycarbonate glass? Also I'm not entirely certain why you needed the screws. And finally I'd like to know more about your setup to mount the shelf for loading the train off your set, I wasn't quite sure how you attached it so it was secure and stable.

Excellent subject. May I suggest to not use a saw and instead scatch the polycarbonat a few times. After that one can break it very neatly on the edge of a table. The advantages are a very clean, fast and straight cut. On th other hand, if you didn't scratch deep enough the cut may break.

How you'll get the trains out of the display? Looks quite fiddly to get the hand on it…

I suppose you could permanently attach a bracket to the wall, put the trains on horizontal shelves that moved up & down the wall & it would be an elevator of sorts with the other trains displayed over one point of a layout, then you could park your rolling stock on a shelf, electrically or hydraulically elevate up to the next level and you wouldn't have to manually move the shelf to a different area of your room and risk dumping those units out one end or the other as one of your loving pets 🐕🐈🦄🐖try to trip you ... I suppose 🤔🤫🧐

You start this Video in a strange order.. Start by looking at the lengt of the train you neat to store... then find a trek that fits... THEN you make the Vitrine to match..
