My father is from Cleveland and was an adult when this happened. He’s told me a version of the story with some differences. I was told that when the Mrs. Howard came back to the line, Fitzpatrick said something along the lines of “Why’re you lettin’ that darky in front of you?” to the dad.
Mr. Howard turns around and says “That’s my wife” and that’s when Fitzpatrick grabbed him. I was told Fitzpatrick knee’d Howard multiple times to the point of the bleeding. A blade was passed to Howard and that’s when the stabbing happened. That’s the version I learned from my dad.

I grew up across the street from Jack Fitzpatrick and his brother Tommy. Tommy got into some teenage trouble (something like stealing hubcaps I think) and was caught. The judge in the case told him he could go to jail or join the army. Tommy joined the army and was killed a few months later in Vietnam (in 1969), 2 years before Jack was killed. Tommy is buried in the same cemetery as Jack. Double tragedies for the Fitzpatrick family. 😢

Rip to John Fitzpatrick. I honestly don’t see Tyron Howard as a murderer because: A. The fight started when people decided to not allow his wife in line. B. John Fitzpatrick decided to pin him to a wall and knee his crotch and C. Tyron Howard was very sorry for murdering that man and arrested himself for it. This was nothing but a fight gone wrong. Both men should have kept to themselves and not start a fight.

What a sad story. Who would have thought it would escalate to that. I fear that Jack must have had quite a volatile temper. I hope he was more patient with his family. And you are so right Lamont, learn to let it slide. Life is too precious to lose that way.

Lamont, some great kernels of truth here. Letting things go, and maybe some implied Karma. In 8th grade i was a wimpy little guy. I was walking down hallway and accidentally bumped into a little wannabe gangbanger. Maybe he bumped me. I don't know. He sucker punched me good in the face. I just instantly reacted by lifting my arm to punch back, even though I never been in a fight ever. The vice principal was behind me and grabbed my arm, keeping me from punching. My jaw still pops to this day. That was in 1981. We both were suspended, even though I didn't do shit. I was a furious little nerd! 2 years later I was reading the newspaper (remember those?) and saw that that little punk had been shot in a drive by gang shooting, a tit for tat gang thing, and I saw that he was like 15 or 16, and I felt like throwing a party! Now I just realize what a waste of life that was, and maybe that could easily have been me dead at 16. That VP did me a favor. I didn't know it then, but I for sure do now. A lot of that crap will take care of itself...comes around goes around, etc. fyi, somehow I grew up and am a bigger than average guy and am here in 2022. I never in a million years imagined myself with a house, a job, kids, etc....life goes on! Stay safe out there!

@@rozzie5651 Thanks for your kind words. I still think about once in a while when my jaw is popping, but statute of limitations is over for that type of stuff I think. I do appreciate your empathy! If more people were like you we probably would never have these types of problems. I'm surprised that anyone read this whole thing, looking back its pretty long. But just your reply has made it worth it. The dentist told me its TMJ, but not too bad, and he asked if I suffered any "trauma" to that area in the past...I told him the whole story and he basically just said "yeah that's all it would take". It was a lot worse the first 5 or so years, especially in the morning I would yawn, but had to stop because it hurt and I knew it would do the loud pop....anyhow, thanks again, stay safe, we have to look out for each other in society I think! Darin H.

@@dharsh007 and also im upset the principal suspended you, and you didn't hit him at all, it was stopped! Even today i feel school's don't do enough to stop bullying. There have been cases where children have died by suicide. But you take care, and i don't mind looking out for people. 😊
