Managers will often get tossed to save a player from arguing and getting tossed themselves, to fire up a team or to just make a point to the umpires if their team thinks theyve been bad. The manager almost always leaves the dugout intending to get tossed. Its rarely over a single call and you have to remember that umpires are there for an entire series. You might have the same group of umps for the better part of a week. Sometimes longer. A manager getting ejected is always good fun for the fans and they often get cheered for it.
The two coaches who made arguing with umpires popular were Billy Martin (New York Yankees) and Earl Weaver (Baltimore Orioles) back in the 1970s. ...It's tough being an umpire. The fans, coaches, and players are always yelling at you. Even in youth baseball!
It was happening long long before that my friend. John McGraw, the legendary player then manager of the old New York Giants, was infamous in the 1910s and 1920s.
@@areguapiri That's true. But I got to see some of this live when Martin was coach for the Tigers in the early 70s and when the Orioles visited my Tigers back in the day. Lol
I think the understated point there was officiating any youth sport is tough. I don't often see a secondary team of parents and a tertiary team of friends and cousins of players threatening to encroach on NFL gridirons or NBA courts. Make a wonky call in the bigger leagues, you get roasted by the internet. Make a normal call on someone's kid, you're going to get profiled and defamed with all sorts of slander because there's no way their kid could have done anything wrong because they're going to be the next LeBron/Mahomes/Ohtani/Messi/(insert name of other great athlete here.) Even though you're officiating a 5 year old pee wee sport. . . .
The reason they say "Get your money's worth" is because players are usually fined after they are ejected, and I'm pretty sure managers are as well. There are times in a season when a manager may get ejected on purpose to light a fire under the team's ass, maybe to change the momentum, or if they are in a losing streak.
Managers and players are always fined for getting thrown out of the game. The reason the term is used is because the fine is a flat rate. If you immediately leave the field or get up in the umpire's face and really let them have it you pay the same amount.
The reason for kicking dirt onto homeplate is that the umpire is the one who has to clean it off lol....umpires have a little brush in their pocket that they use periodically to clean off the plate when it gets dirt on it. Its the last little childish thing a manager can do once the argument is done lol
Earl Weaver Billy Martin Tommy Lasorda These are all old school managers that have RUclips videos with audio. VERY ENTERTAINING EJECTIONS. May they rest in peace.
Daz, in baseball, the "head coach" is called the MANAGER. The OWNER pays the players and hires a GENERAL MANAGER, aka GM, who assembles the team through drafting and developing young players, signing free agent players, trading players, releasing players, and negotiating player contracts. The GM will hire a MANAGER who chooses COACHES to help the players with pitching, hitting, base running, and fielding. The MANAGER manages the game on the field by deciding who, where, and when a player plays, the batting order, the pitching rotation, and the overall philosophy and strategy of each game. The BENCH COACH is a trusted advisor and assists the MANAGER with game decisions. If the MANAGER is ejected, he will take over. The PITCHING COACH helps manage the pitching staff and offers strategic advice and critique. The HITTING COACH offers strategic advice and critique to the hitters. The FIRST BASE COACH assists base runners with stealing second base. The THIRD BASE COACH assists base runners with taking third base or trying to score. They also relay signs from the dugout to the batter on whether to swing or bunt. The BULLPEN COACH assists with preparing relief pitchers to enter the game.
What's surprising they didn't show Bobby Cox getting thrown out. Y'all should react to Bobby Cox getting ejected. He holds the record for most games for getting tossed.

The reason managers throw their hat off is to be able to get right in the ump's face. Making contact with an umpire brings an automatic three game suspension even if it's just the bill of your baseball cap making contact.
Both Lou Piniella and Loyd McClendon have managed big market and small market teams in their careers, both have seen umps favor big market teams. THATS WHY THEY'RE MAD
