We've popped into a few random stores as we've sailed through the Bahamas and let's just say they leave a lot to be desired. With almost no fresh produce and sky-high prices, it's difficult to shop. We've heard Marsh Harbour is THE place to provision so we're on a mission in search of a better selection and more affordable prices.
it's also the first time (since we've owned our boat) we've busted out our folding bikes. We've had them for a couple years now and we absolutely love them...but that said space on the boat is extremely limited. We told ourselves if we don't use the bikes we'll have to sell them when we return to FL for our last bit of service.
I hope you enjoy the hunt as much as we did. As always we've got a lot more on our site if you want to click over. See ya on the water!

I haven't seen a married couple treat each other as well and show as much respect for each other as you two do....it is a joy to watch and nice to realize that such a thing is indeed possible.....for some. I can see that learning what and how to use the ocean's bounty would be very helpful to a budget. I think you two are opening many peoples realistic eyes.....like mine. Thank you once again.....

Are we sure they're actually married? I'm pretty sure they've skirted the terminology the entire time they've been producing their show. They simply refer to themselves a "a couple of...." I've gone back & forth on guessing they're siblings to married to "open".... I've been curious--but it's none of my business. Love the videos, regardless! Kudos to you kids for living your dreams; and thank you for sharing with the rest of us out here.

i am always surprised at the variety of clothes you wear nikki! i like your style. i had just imagined that there is simply not enough room for a good assertment of clothes like you have-an that one is relugated to a change of 4 or 5 items until they literally fall off you from wear and tear - but i guess not!

I ran across this video and although I always enjoy your videos this one broke my heart. For over a week I've watched all the coverage about the destruction hurricane Dorian caused to this area. To now see how beautiful it was? Broke my heart. The turquoise house, gas station, the bakery ECT ECT. These are places that I've seen over and over on the news or RUclips. As they are now. I just hope everyone will continue to pray for Abaco and give generously to one of the many organizations trying to help those who have lost everything.

In 1968 my family moved to Marsh Harbour & I went to school there. It was fun, to play on the limestone & climb up the hill, to go to the beaches & ride in boats around the island. Once we went to the southern end, not far from Sandy Point & my dad rode in a row boat out to a much larger boat. He climbed up the rope ladder of the larger boat. It was cool in the breeze & shade from all the trees near the shore, & it WAS VERY SANDY there. When he climbed down & came back he had a whole crate of lobsters. We took those home & ate all of them right away. Some don’t like to hear this, but I put Catsup on mine, I was only 9 years old, & it WAS VERY GOOD!
Today I am looking for info about hurricane Dorian, which is about to do serious damage to Marsh Harbour, & all of Abaco Island. I’m trying to see how things are there for the people there...to see the news about them, & I can’t find much news about either. Thank you for the tour, hope you are safe wherever you are now 🙂

Thanks for all the information, sometimes it's best to learn from others than to figure things out!
On the ice cream front, have you considered just making it?? It does require AC power, and a freezer to freeze the canister (we have a Cuisinart ice cream machine), but we don't buy ice cream much anymore because it's so easy to make. Vanilla is bad with 3 cups half and half, 1 cup whipping cream, 1 cup whole milk, 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1 tsp vanilla (the fat ratio for the milk is important for smoothness) Throw it all in a mixing bowl, set it in your fridge overnight, then pour into the unit and freeze. Throw in 2 tbsp of any 80 proof alcohol to make it smoother. Make different flavors by using the above ratios and throw in cocoa powder, infuse with peanuts, add cinnamon, even wasabi paste to taste to get different flavors. Butter pecan is to die for (use brown sugar instead of white sugar and brown the pecans in butter). My wife's favorite is my version of cherry garcia using dried cherries soaked in dark spiced rum and shaved dark Ghiradelli chocolate!
I like being able to adjust the ingredients to suit our tastes instead of letting Ben and Jerry decide how it will taste. I've never tried, but you might be able to get away with using almond milk for part of the liquid ingredients.
Anyway .. thanks again for sharing!

We want to answer a few of the most common questions in one spot here:
    - Microgreens: We love this idea and have thought about purchasing some seeds when we return to Ft Lauderdale
    - Mail Videos on a drive: This would only be possible if we had a huge backlog of videos completed, which is not the case. I'm not sure we'll ever be caught up enough to do this.
    - Make Ice Cream and Yogurt: Thanks for the tips, we hadn't really considered it before.
    - Food Prices: There is no secret grocery store for the locals, we did not visit some tourist market by the docks, food here is simply expensive. Most of the food comes from Florida on a barge, tax is added and prices are marked up by the store to cover these extra expenses. It's simply the way it is and we understand this: Food is expensive! But like we said in the video it's pretty much what we expected.

Well, you could go for a "mail a micro-sdcard" this would cost no extra and the microsd-cards are very robust. :)
Would save you a bunch of money if someone just receive them and add them to a Remote Desktop or just Push them as Private Videos on RUclips, so you can add details and stuff remotely. :)
Would save you so much time where you can simply shot nicer content than "this wifi is so slow" :D

Love being a part of your new journey. Growing sprouts is so easy in a small space in the right sprouter. This could supplement your veggie budget. We lived in an RV and grew enough for several salads and supplementing cooked dishes per week in Sproutamo sprouters. We had 7 of them going at once and harvested every few days to weekly. We transferred cans of sprout seeds to bags so we could tuck them into small spaces.

11:20 Jason - you need to get your heavy sea legs. That's what it will be like a lot, especially on the west coast. A tip for the dinghy in weather like that. Try to get on a plane (as boaters I assume you know what this is) and the ride will be a bit rough getting up on it but when you plane your bow will be at the perfect angle to slice through the oncoming wave and just when the bow is about to dip it will reach another wave giving you a much smoother ride. That or you could get a mini hydrofoil.

I laughed when you opened your grocery bag . I saw your Driscoll strawberries only cost $2.99. I live in NH near the Canadian border and pay $6.99 for the same container. Strawberries are one of the only fruits that my son eats so it's a must every week. Maybe my son and I will have to move onto a boat in the Bahamas to save money. I love your videos and also started watching you guys from the beginning when you were buying your first rv. I have dreamed of getting a power catamaran and homeschooling my son in the Bahamas. we were in the Bahamas at the same time as this video. with regards to the Internet speeds I think what is happening is there is still a lot of storm damage to the infrastructure from the hurricane last fall, at least that was the case on Grand Bahama. I built high speed infrastructure for 15 years and my opinion is that damage in the more remote areas is causing system wide slow downs. Many locals told me that speed was better prior to the hurricane. Hopefully it will get better the longer you're there.

If I’m turning onto any dirt road now I automatically choose the left side first even though I was raised driving on the right or am in a right handed country driving. On paved roads I’m usually ok but when the road turns to dirt, I have to question it! Lol!

FYI, before both of our trips aboard or Catalina 30 sailboat we purchased a lot of canned goods and after marking the contents and exp. date we removed the paper labels, then stored them as low in the vessel as possible, as well as in voids in the design which we opened and trimmed out. This largely eliminated the need to do any shopping for anything except fresh bread, cold cuts, etc. We also brought or own soda after learning it cost us #1.00 per can, regardless of how many cans you want to buy. All this was roughly 35 years ago. The other option is to purchase dehydrated foods, which save loads of space. and weight Look around, you can find several firms which offer bulk quantities of everything from meat to potatoes, eggs and yes even strawberries and ice cream, honest.

Better yet, get to South East Asia where food and everything else is cheaper and tastier. Don't know what it costs to get through the Panama Canal but it's probably worth it. Put on your sailing gear, because it's the ride of your life.

fuel is about $4 in the city the islands should be $2 more, but understand the situation. Bahamians have to import the food from the US so thats American price plus what ever tax the US government add to the goods, then we have to pay shipping fees, then Bahamian import customs tax, then VAT tax, then another shipment fee to get the good from the boat to the store. plus the store have to make a profit. the same apply for fuel. this is why our price for goods cost more. if you were counting that was a lot of +. hope this explains everything

You should build a bike rack on the side of your boat... and then some racks on each side of the dingy!!!! That would be a sweet diy video!!!

Thanks for being real. I love to watch your videos. You seem to consider things like we would. I definitely think you should buy the gigs instead of spending so much time looking for a good WiFi connection. I think that looks like a $21 haul here in the states.

I'm taking a guess, but it seems that the best shot for you guys to make things easy might be to make one trip each time you arrive in a new destination to purchase a SIM card for the local carrier and enough data for your upload needs. A few other cruisers do the same and it seems to work for them most of the time.

    • @gonewiththewynns
      @gonewiththewynns  7 лет назад +1

+Chris Kammerer that is what we do, but data is expensive which is why we search free WiFi when we can.

You've gotta get out of the Caribbean. I've been living in S.E. Asia for a while now. Far more beautiful and the prices for everything is like 10% what you'd pay for it in a regular US town.

I love that you guys have made people rethink how live life. Have you considered just mailing videos to a trusted friend in the states for upload and release on certain days? It would eliminate the long searches for wifi that you can upload with. Blessings to you both.

    • @gonewiththewynns
      @gonewiththewynns  7 лет назад

Have you guys considered getting and making home made ice cream. Microbrew some beers and also make your own alcohol on the boat, it's not hard and doesn't cost $15 for 2 beers.

just an idea but you guys may want to get a pair of One Wheels or mini segways when back stateside, wont help with bulk transport of food but will allow a pretty good exploration range without the peddle workout...or maybe just a hub motor replacement for the bikes cause laziness for the win!!!

The bikes look a bit bulky, but if you have the room for them on board they do offer a level of mobility to you. But it is something else to have, clean, store, and lug... do you see many other cruisers with bikes on board?

I travel to the Bahamas many times and usually rent a home there. The Bahamas do not have an "income tax" and charge a duty on goods. Essentially this is a consumption tax, which is why the cost is even higher than just the extra cost of importing. Many times I have spent 65 dollars on a case of beer in the Abaco's or the Exuma's. If you did not pay income taxes the prices would seem more reasonable.

There are many options for in motion satellite data services...and as you have previously mentioned, they're quite expensive. Have you considered reaching out to those providers and asked if they would be interested in sponsoring you with the equipment and service?
