After the reveal, I can just HEAR the sarcasm in Michael's voice.
What helped was ted Danson and Kristen Bell were the only actors who knew about the twist beforehand: Ted because michael’s whole role is to be fake nice and Kristen because Eleanor is to know it isn’t the bad place

JK Rowling only told Alan Rickman, the actor who played Snape, that he had been in love with Harry's mother this entire time, and vowed to help Harry because of it. Also, we get to learn that Snape protected Harry because of his mother, but also hated Harry, because his father had been so cruel to him.

That line (521 years) happened at least 300 years (however long Michael kept rebooting the experiment) after this clip, which takes place ~150 years after Lincoln was assassinated (assuming minimal delay between them dying and waking up in the reception area). At minimum, there was 450 years between Lincoln dying and Michael finding a 521 year gap between now and the last Good Place entrant. It’s not unreasonable to add in another 70 years somewhere in there. Some was in planning, some was spent at Mindy’s, etc.

For everyone talking about Chidi’s speaking French in this scene not fitting with Season 2, when Eleanor asks Chidi for help, before he’s able to answer Eleanor, a guy enters and talks to Chidi in French. Eleanor then asks him about that, and he explains that his native language is French, but he’d speak English because he’s in Australia
Watching this now makes so much sense after knowing the twist.
After the finale, this hits alittle different
what doesn't make sense is it says chidi's french is being translated to English but in season 2 when they meet in real life, chidi speaks English.
I don't recall where Chidi's teaching, but if it's an English-speaking university, he's probably teaching in English there. French is just his native language, but that doesn't mean he's not fluent in English.
Same for me, right here, right now: I'm from Québec, Canada, so French is my native language. But because I know you're English-speaking, and the video is in English, and everything around here is English, I use my knowledge of the English language instead.

PhilTheCockatoo In that scene, yes. During the scenes in the season 2 finale, he might be speaking to English audiences, and so he's speaking English then. Just like I'm usually speaking French myself but, right now, because the comment section of this video is mostly English, I choose to write in English.
He's in Australia in the finale, so he's speaking english.
I figured they were just in a situation like the Trolley Problem. They’re not really there, it’s just a “simulation.” They’re not really alive again, they’re just experiencing life as if they never died. I think that’s why Chidi can speak such perfect English on the Season 2 finale.

Michael says that Abraham Lincoln is in the good place, but when we see the actual records in the good place, no-one has entered the good place since 1497 CE.
Then at 0:14, he says 'that was close, but she didn't make it' - which indicates he knows about the points of everyone, and the threshold which they need to pass to enter the good place, which contradicts with the fact that he was shocked by the revelation that no-one had gotten into the good place in 521 years.
...
Two explanations:
1) Michael was just pretending to know all these facts, but didn't, and was just making them up to make the place seem like the bad place.
2) The producers kinda forked up and forgot about these small plotholes/inconsistencies.
Either way, I'm definitely binging this show again once it ends to see all the work put into the smaller details into the show! Forking brilliant!

He seemed to be under the impression later on that most moderately good people end up in some version of the Good Place. Given the Good Place's secrecy and refusal to do their jobs in Season 4, I'm assuming nothing about it was common knowledge outside of higher-ups like Shawn. What he says here was either a lie by Michael, or a lie by Shawn, to Michael.
he was obviously lying. when the accountant tells him nobody’s gotten into the good place in 521 years, he’s surprised, so at this point he wouldn’t have known that. he’s just making people up to support his lie.
The reason why is to hammer home to Eleanor that she really doesn't belong here. When people like Elvis aren't in the good place, when an Arizonian trash bag like Eleanor is, it makes her feel like she really doesn't deserve to be there.

it's not just out of the good place, I think you could justify that by saying that automatic translation would be almost everywhere in the afterlife just for convenience's sake
but once they go back so Michael can prove that they can become better on earth, you can't justify why Chidi can do lectures in english, without a hint of accent anymore
This has been bugging me since I binged both seasons

I guess the whole Chidi speaking perfect English because the Good Place translated his speech went out the window once they got back to earth. I don’t blame them, an accent from Senegal isn’t the easiest to act out but weirdly enough I’ve met people from there who didn’t have much of one.
He's most likely speaking English in season 3 because of his job as a professor in Australia, a country that notably doesn't speak French.
I’m confused. If everyone lives with their soulmates then do the soulmates have the same true essence or does one of them live in a house not made for them?

I never noticed until now but right at 1:36 you can see it's clearly not her hand.
Although you can argue it’s also an early hint Eleanor is where she needs to be. They say Vicky is the real Eleanor but the skin tones don’t match. Michael probably didn’t notice or didn’t think they’d notice.

Chidi was a professor in Australia, he absolutely knew English (he even says in the clip that he worked in Hong Kong, Paris, and Australia). French was just his first language so it's what he's most comfortable using

He tells us he was born in Nigeria and raised in Senegal - Nigeria has no history of French speakers as it was an English colony, not a French one (therefore there is a 0% chance his parents are French speakers), and even though Senegal was a French colony and French is the "official" language, only around 10% of the population actually speak it, over 80% of Senegalese speak Wolof - So even if Chidi did learn French while living in Senegal, which is possible, he would have learned it as a 3rd language and not a 1st, as there's little benefit to learning a language no one around you can understand - English 1st, Wolof 2nd, French 3rd.

Plus Lincoln actually really screwed up due to their point system. He was leader of one of factions during civil war, so he is partially responsible for all possible war crimes soldiers commited, plus many deaths considered normal during war. Plus, actuall, anybody who ever fought for equality of races is responsible for any at of Black racism like Black Panthers, Tribu Ka, unorganised racists... You know, it's actually really screwed. Democracy reformators (also people helping poor as Hitler was in bad financial shape in past) caused Hitler to rule Germany and started II WW, and Holocaust. You've support help for refugees in Middle East? You are responsible for terrorism and crimes they causes (actually you are cretin, no sane, adult person should be dumb enough to support uncontrolled migration without legit identity verification, f.e. man who lead terrorist attacks in Belgium was same time known to goverments and stuff as ISIS member and legal immigrant, due to law of my country it's crime).
Nemo TheEight I think, adding on and this is just a headcannon, that even if Lincoln laid the real groundwork for slavery to be abolished, he didn’t actually free the slaves. And even when they freed the slaves, there was still a lot of racism and attacks against black people, especially at the time.

In the show and eeven here (Micheal did it) they explained it. Point system is totally broken, so even if you try hard to be good person you won't be as even good deeds have minus points you can't know about because they are for things you can't know you participate in. See: SW:KOTOR (if I'm not mistaken), when you can give money to beggar, but it will cause himself being attacked by robbers. you can't know about it b4 (unless you've read walkthrough), but in _Good Place_ universe it woul cause you minus Karma points. Actualy even my support of few charity organisation probably owould do same, just because they were frauds, even if I stopped my support just after getting know about it. I would loose some more points due to stopping support for all similar events, as some of them could be legit... Actually in their Karma system doing anything can make you loose points.
I actually onder why Lincoln did it to GP.. He participated in war which caused death of many, multiple group rapes (as normal at any war), etc. plus he unwillingly rised racism problems, participated in Black Panther creation, whole problem with treating labour workers at factories bad...

Going back and rewatching, Chidi stating that he's actually speaking French and that The "Good" Place translates it all seems to make the least sense in retrospect.
I mean, why wouldn't he just say that, but also say, "I actually speak perfectly fluent English" because we literally know he did. We see him interact with clearly non-French people exclusively when he's back on Earth and there's no magic translation afoot, and yet his ability to speak English is completely unaffected.
Kinda seems like a character trait that was fun and meaningless in the start, but as the story goes on, makes less sense.

FDR, even if he did get America out of the depression, still put many Asian Americans in interment camps during the war. And even if he did help America, we were about to hit another depression and he covered it up. He also cheated on his wife, who he married because they were wealthy fifth cousins.
JFK escalated tensions between other nations to the point where we nearly got into nuclear war with Cuba and he came from a family that stabbed people in the back to get a game up in politics. He cheated on his wife and if you believe conspiracy theories, had connections to the mob. His sister was lobotomized for being an angry teen with a possible learning disability and the family lied and said she was on vacation.

If Chidi is a college professor in a country where English is dominant, he would be required to speak English fluently. Only reason he doesn’t have an accent is because they tried to have his actor try out some accents and they didn’t turn out right

I liked the pilot, not great but it was a nice premise. I just watched the 2nd episode and it was VERY disappointing; they recycled nearly every joke from the pilot and had almost zero character development. The worse thing is that I did not laugh once, I smiled or snickered a time or two but no outright laughter. The only interesting thing that seemed to progress the story was a revelation made in the last 30 seconds(while end credits were rolling). The only thing I wonder is how fast will this show be cancelled? A comedy that elicits no laughs?
