  • Car Written Off - Bad Fuel In The Outback, this is a follow up to last week's video where I talked about the drama of innocently filling up the diesel in my car and 150 kms later having the engine blow up.
In this video, I discuss options for replacing the engine, including a reconditioned engine, rebuild or buying one from a wrecker.
And then, some incredibly exciting news comes my way. Enjoy!

As a diesel mechanic let me make you a suggestion for your new car. Do not buy a diesel again. The new ones are far too stressed and an injector failure, as you learnt, kills them. Petrol Prado or an old 100 series Landcruiser petrol - 6cyl or V8. What you lose at the pump, you gain in repairs.

That's why I have a '92 hilux diesel that runs on waste cooking oil and has well over 500000 kms on the odometer at less than 30 cents per liter.

The simpler an engine, the better they are and much cheaper and easier to repair.

I'm a diesel mechanic too mate and I couldn't agree more, very glad to hear more people saying that.
You don't even really lose at the pump these days, diesel where I live is 70 cents more than 91 octane and 50 cents more than 98.

There are also Isuzu, Rangers, Tritons out there that are truly capable of dragging you around this glorious country.....Happy hunting....

I have a 95 Pajero with now 270,000 Kms ( 4m40t motor ) and have had that car for around 13 years. Just had the injector pump rebuilt and new injectors installed. That and the harmonic balanacer replaced as the timeing marks had moved ( a common problem i'm told ) Total cost in the end was $4150. Yes a big cost but the rest of the car is in great shape and just spent more money on new shockers all round and H/D springs in the back as the rear end had goes south with the weight of our Jayco pop top caravan on the back. Yes my old man was right.......If it's got tits or wheels, it's going to cost you money.

Commiserations on being duped by Toyota's totally innefective air filtration system. This has been a sore point with Toyota owners for many years now with many dusted engines as a result. I cant figure out why there has been no class action on this point. Toyota must be rubbing their greasy little hands together with glee at all the new engine sales they are getting. Glad I dont own one!

Great vids you produce. You need to call yourself Flash Gordon - the amount of trouble that comes your way and you manage to get out of it. You’re in a prime position now to choose an appropriate vehicle to continue on - I for one would choose the v8 petrol Land Cruiser- great tow vehicle and in the advent of water in the fuel, it’ll just stop - drain the tank, change filters, clean injectors and you’re pretty much good to go.

  • @Michael_Mears
    @Michael_Mears Год назад

Well done, Paul! What a wonderful outcome, probably the best you could hope for. You dodged a bullet with the wrecked engine idea (been there, done that), and the rebuild your old engine idea back in Perth, once they've got your block you'll not get it back without a lot of pain and/or delay, one way or the other.
Now. New (to you) wagon. Get the Fuel Manager or similar filter and water separator installed with the warning light up front in the cab. It is used as a pre-filter, 30 micron. Don't get talked into using a pre-filter less than this, and don't get a filter installed between the factory filter and the injectors. The finer the filter, the more it will cause diesel and water to emulsify, which takes far longer to separate out (maybe hours, so it will not collect in the bowl, just go straight through). A large, coarse filter with a collection bowl allows the diesel to slow down, gives time for water to fall out of the diesel, collect in the bowl and set off the warning light if it exceeds the maximum level in the bowl.

Loss of power and lots of noises.
I'm insured with RAC and I had the same options as you.
I whet for option 1 new crate motor from Toyota Japan.
I had to wait 9weeks for engine to arrive had Toyota dealership do the repairs.
    It was worth the wait.
I also got a new turbo and fuel pump extra costs insurance covered %70 of the costs.
Now it's all fixed now and it runs beautifully done 1500 km now.

7:15 Brilliant news, mate! Now that I'm subbed, I can follow your future journeys in your fixed (or new) home. I'll be on the road before the end of the year in an old, '05 RWD Highlifter Ford Courier v6 crew cab with a tray. They're the 4WD without the front drive and transfer case. So it sits high, hence the 'highlifter' tag. I've done a lot of work on the engine, and have refurbished and improved the suspension and brakes. Next is sorting out where my tools, worldly possessions, and the sleeping area will fit. I've got plans. It will be compact with a good use of space. The back seat is coming out to make way for a 100-litre water tank, pump and other stuff. It'll have hot water, a compressor, welder, genset, full set of tools, solar etc. I have everything here. I just have to finish building it. Should be done by Christmas.

TL;DR watched previous video looked/sounded perfectly and reasonably fixable, a few new/used/reconditioned parts 'n shlap'er back together and have er running again.
from what it looked like it had heaps of blow by from bad piston rings and it may have had more than one bad injector pouring fuel in to the engine and/or very low fuel pressure from the probably damaged injectors/injector pump (the fuel lubes the injector pump/injectors albeit very poorly and much much worse using anything but clean diesel like water or sediment) looked fixable on the cheap n nasty

Finding a replacement engine from hundreds, thousands of kilometres away and relying on the seller's word is almost like playing Lotto. Yeah, maybe the person on the end of the phone is honest and upfront about what he/she has. However, what if they're thinking this will be an easy dollar on a barely running motor? I grew up in the bush, and honesty is something I live by, sometimes to my own detriment, but nowadays, you're gambling with someone's integrity or lack of.

    Hey mate
Just like to mention that we’ve just sailed Sydney to Perth these last three years on. A yacht and used fuel doctor from cairns onward and had zero fuel issues , can highly recommend fuel doctor as an ongoing maintenance item for diesels it’s been great for us and we’ve been through lots of rain and adverse conditions . It’s cut down on fuel filters and I’ve noticed this the filters come out cleaner and even the water separating filter has rarely had any signs of sludge or water. That’s been our experience anyway in marine environment where ive had to Jerry can carry from various places all over the coast .

Sorry to hear about your car, good insurance though.I hope you have more luck with your next car.
Myself I own an LC FJ62 LPG/Petrol that I've done 690.000km in on the original engine etc only auto transmission has been rebuild, been on many outback trips, (just came back again from FNQ and Vic high country to SA) never had a problem yet I couldn't fix on the side of the road, and I can count them on less than one hand in way over 20 years, yes I service the thing very regularly, replace suspect parts etc.
I suppose what I'm saying is, would it be an idea to look at an older model vehicle that is nowhere near as sensitive to bad fuel, water, voltage problems etc as new ones seem to be, yes you will most probably forego some luxuries but serviced and fixed right should be more reliable in the bush and easier and cheaper to fix.
Personally I would be hesitant to take a new vehicle bush, having little knowledge of electronics, computers, never mind fuel issues. However "Fuel Doctor" seems to do a very good job at cleaning it up, it claims!? Anyway just a thought. Hope you'll find a suitable vehicle soon.

Your tips about checking your insurance coverage that it will cover contaminated fuel was good advice,
Question : in your case I assume your insurance policy covered you then for contaminated fuel BUT did you have to provide a chemical analysis of the fuel that came out of your fuel tank to verify your claim,
Or was the word from the mechanic good enough.
Hope all goes well with your new car search and travels, I’ve been enjoying your vlogs 👍 .

My 120 😅Prado broke down half way between Katherine and Kununurra and towed to Katherine Toyota. We were towing and the fuel light came on briefly a few days earlier. I changed the fuel filters. Toyota will void warranty if you fit a second fuel filter prior to OEM. Given the Toyota fuel filter is 10 micron and our fuel filter was 1 micron it made sense to fit the second filter between the OEM and motor. This way you get an alarm and still have the second filter for protection.
Toyota claimed contaminated fuel which was found to be false in my case. The issue was injector 4 was out of tolerance and caused the piston to fail. As the car was 12 months old and 35,000 kms they did the rebuild. It took 6 weeks.
We now ask Toyota for a printout of the injectors feedback values. Don’t accept “there ok”. We also have an OBD2 scanner which gives me the injector feedback values.
Apparently this is a common problem with the D4D three litre diesel motor. The dealer in Katherine told me that this fault is prevalent when towing (my camper is under 2000kgs) and if you have chipped the motor. Thankfully mine was not chipped as this voids any warranty.

Yeah the warranty on these wreck is bit bullshit because most times getting it fitted within 3 months is maybe 1 half months in at best. When does the warranty start on delivery or on payment? Then you drive it and unless you have an issue straight away it likely won’t be within the 3 months. Then, and even then, whose paying for labour? You got to get everything in writing. Including if you go the rebuild engine route.

Diesels are too fragile these days, writing a car off from water in the fuel is crazy, the old 2h motors went for 4-500k and more running on dirty diesel no problem. Bring back the old motors and save global warming by producing half the amount of cars for the same kilometres

All wreckers will lie through there teeth to make a sale.
    A crate motor is best.
    Rebuild motor is next best.
A 2nd hand motor is not worth the risk.

Why don't you buy a car in Darwin you are a lot close to there than Perth.

Writing it off doesnt make up for your time, the pain in the ass, or the hassle. But!! it does bring an end to the issue at hand. Having done west coast lap in my 200 series, had some dodgy fuel, couple of filter replacements on road side, had mate blow his 4.5 litre v8 in his 76 series, ( 30 grand plus insurance covered thankfully ) just before my trip, my advice is get a water watch and or second filter, carry a spare filter and know how to replace it if need be. good luck with the new vehicle. Why doesn't the standard Toyota 'water in filter' alarm catch it?

Market value on a Land Rover e.g. Defender, could become a jackpot but your advice is sound. I always negotiate an AGREED VALUE.👍🏻🙏🦘
