  • Walk Around My New Ford Ranger Wildtrak 3.2 and How To Get Better Fuel Consumption.
    In this video, I'm walking you around my new ,2nd hand Ford Ranger Wildtrak (2015).Learn a simple tip for improving your fuel economy and see the mods made before I bought it.
    After only 2,000 kms, I realised that Cruise Control, though a lazy way to travel, is in fact a great consumer of additional fuel. Today at horrendous fuel prices, any way to save while touring around Australia, is a bonus.

    Massive respect and support for your journey.
    The Hyundai is still a work in progress, thinking about converting it to full electric with a kit I bought from Ali bongo that claims to actually make money as it puts excess energy back into the grid!!
    The manual is a bit confusing and there seems to be some parts missing!

    Hi Paul, I’ve got a 2015 Px2 I bought in Darwin after an unleaded incident in my 2001 DID Pajero lunched the engine. Economic write off. Brand new to 160000 trouble free klms with 2 laps of Aus and plenty of farm work. Tips. Tow in 5th or 4th. Service the transmission every 50000 and use a transmission specialist. Recently changed the valve body in the transmission because I thought it was getting rough. Standard valve bodies are aluminium and flare over time. 1.5 lts per 100 more efficient and rough changes are gone. Intercooler. Upsize it. The standard ones on all utes are underdone for constant towing. Amazing how much cooler they run and how much more efficient the turbo is. We towed and drove 4 up all over Aus at 13.5 let’s per 100. Even towing a 2000 kg van around the hills of Gippsland I never exceed 13.5 lts/100klms. Oh, just carry a spare fuel and air filter. Soda to change. I had a secondary filter etc. it mucked with the fuelling and was a waste of time so I got rid of it. I’m no fan of Ford and never owned one previously. This one has been awesome. Hope it serves you well.

    Piece of advice, fit an after market transmission cooler, dont rely on the original to work properly. Towing will cook your transmission in the Rangers.

    Mazda BT50 2017 3.2litre model 50,000 km(Ford Ranger base) Bridgeston Dueler AT. By the Readout, I get 11.7 litres / Km on highway, no load Car only, it is the same Cruise Control or not. I should accurately check the actual Km and Fill up amount to check this.
    I am very happy with this Ute, no Problems

    The box under the bonnet appears to be the electronics gubbins for the HID headlamps, no more simple bulb to change. You might find your fuel economy improves even more by knocking it back to 4th gear when towing and letting the engine run faster, cooler and lighter. In a 6 speed auto or manual 4th is normally the closest gear to a direct drive. Both 5th and 6th are overdrives. The lamp on the rear dust deflector would be the high level brake lamp as the factory one in the back of the cab is blocked by the canopy.

    I have also had a transmission cooler fitted to my Ranger as I did with my Prado, everyone says 'you don't need it' but so far I've had no issues. And I also fitted a Catch Can, that's cleaned the engine up! And I tow a Supreme Classic 2.7 tonne. Next i'm upgrading the rear springs to constant load.

    I have the same configuration ranger in a 2017 model. I get- car only on a trip around 9.8-10.4L/100km and about 13 around town. Towing a 1.8 ton van around 14-15.8 L/100km. Also look at getting the transmission oil coolers fitted to replace the heat exchanger and have the transmission serviced regularly when towing (as with all autos).

    paul invest i some seat covers , mate, that leather gets hot.
    I drive a d max , found it to be reliable and economical, but you had time and location issues , the ford will do the job, watch your oil changes , do NOT LEVAE IT WITH OUT OIL FOR MORE THAN 15MINS when changing oil, as they have an electric oil pump , that if it totally drains will not re prime, and caused seized engines.
    has it got a CATCH CAN fitted, recommend you get 1 if it hasnt,
    i also suggest you look at the AUSTRALIAN 4X4 forum and check out your model on the forum , to look for any possible , issues , those i mentioned are ones i am aware of, in earlier Ford dual cabs.
    love the KILT, and the videos are very informative ,

    Very nice clean unit Paul, but your fuel economy surprises me a bit. I have 2016 BT50 which is same platform, we tow a 22.6ft van and it is up around 3.4t loaded, the Financial Manager does 90% of the driving, uses cruise control, found the rig is happiest 93 to 95Km/hr and with an all up GCM of around 6.5t, we returned 18 to 19 l/100 0n 14,000km trip. I will not alter the "tune" on my vehicles because I think the manufacturers engineers have a little know how......enjoy your travels

    That thing you pointed too is the Glow plug module, the light in the tail gate is probably a brake light? . I have a 2021 wildtrak and they have sorted out keyless entry and the lights now but the car still makes plenty of Bing Bongs noises though. Enjoy your new ride mate and safe travels.

    Hi Paul Great Video I have one my self 2014 xls Really happy with it But just a few things that you need to know is the intake hose from the intercooler to the throttle body is prone to get splits in it ( only rubber ford ones ) I got silicon replacements Engine oil and filter change is maximum of 15 mins or engine needs replacement as it is seized Sorry but they are not rock sliders Just side steps But I see that you have a catch can and fuel filter Great keep up the great work with your videos mate

  • @johnprice2606

    Good choice! If you switch the lights to Auto they will turn off and on without the "ding ding" when you switch off. Towing in sports mode in the Auto locks out overdrive which will always slip if towing. If it does not already have one I would recommend a front mounted transmission cooler. The Ranger has a wee little cooler that uses the engine coolant to cool the transmission and it is completely ineffective for towing. It also runs the risk if it fails of getting engine coolant in the transmission. Also service the transmission every 50,000k. I fitted a transmission cooler to my Ranger Wildtrak and the towing temperatures dropped 30 degrees from transmission killing to ideal temperatures. Those fuel consumption figures are way too high, I get 13.9~14.1 l/100k towing our 2.5t van. I suspect someone has retuned the ECU and increased the fuel to give more power which is not necessary with only 2.5t van.

    Very good report, keep up the good work.
    Very surprised at 12.7 ltrs/100 with car only. I constantly get 9.5 to 10 ltrs/100 car only.
    Towing a 1500kg van I get 12 to 14 ltrs/100 depending on the terrain.
    Its a 2017 model and 140000kms

      12.7 is very high. My 2017 Wildtrak with the 3.2 litre engine achieved high 6's/low 7's highway driving and mid 9's town only driving, 13's to 17's at max GCM of 6000kgs depending on conditions, best at 12.5 Barcaldine to Winton with a tailwind and worst at 19.5 pushing into a massive headwind on the Newell Highway, Moree to Coonabarabran

    Your unloaded fuel consumption is wrong for this model. My friend has a BT50 with the same engine, but running Nitto Trail Grapplers 285-75/16. These are 33" and HEAVY tyres, which negatively affect fuel consumption. Highway consumption he gets 10 to 10.5. You need to find an engine tuner and get yours re-mapped back to standard or much better for towing. Worth reading the owners manual, too, for tips on how to tow, like which gears to use.....

  • @kisbushcraftdownunder
    @kisbushcraftdownunder Год назад

    I would expect better mileage than that you should look at any re map of the engine with some caution extra power and longevity are rarely good bedfellows, also tyres can have a huge effect on mileage my Hwy tyres get 10% better mileage than my all terrain tyres same size and diameter

    If you’re driving in sand surely you’ll be in 4wd and the traction control will turn itself off. The headlights won’t stay on when it is locked. Brake lights at the top of rear tailgate. If your Prado was sophisticated enough to have keyless entry etc then I am surprised it didn’t have steering wheel controls for phone/radio etc. Look under the driver’s side passenger seat for space for a second battery. On the right there is a smaller space for fire extinguisher or whatever. Never use cruise control when towing or in hills. The car will want to maintain a set speed on hills and rev up accordingly using more fuel. In the same conditions without cruise control you simply slow a little until you’re over the crest, this is a big fuel saver.

    I believe you mentioned in an earlier clip that the ecu had been flashed for some type of performance increase. I tow in 2021 bi turbo wildtrak a 2850kg caravan and my average fuel use id 14 to 14.5 l per 100. I wonder if the ecu flash is a reason for the higher than normal fuel usage.

    • @dishevellednomad
      @dishevellednomad Год назад

      The ECU flash if done properly by people that write their own tunes should decrease fuel consumption markedly. I had my 2017 Wildtrak flash tuned and picked up a 20% decrease in consumption.

    For your information, don't try to do an oil change on your own. I bought a 2916 ranger in march 2020 and the first thing I did was take it to my mechanic to have him do a full service, it was only then that I was informed that it's better if 2 people do the oil change because it's not a good idea to leave the old oil draining out while you stop and have a cuppa, if you don't get that new oil in quick sharpish , you'll have trouble down the track.
