Yeah Bob Seger had long hair. He ate at diners in some very small towns where people weren't used to seeing men sporting long hair.

Donald I believe the Seger version predates my birth, but I ALWAYS interpreted those lyrics to mean that Seger was peeved about people in certain settings whispering to each other and asking “is that a man or a woman?” in his presence.

That shit was real in the 90s, too. I had long hair until I was 20, and got the same unoriginal grief from people. Kids in my 7th through 10th grade schools called me The Undertaker.

Cover of a Bob Seger song. This is not Countryallica. Garage Inc had some killer songs on it. Tuesday's Gone, Mercyful Fate, Helpless, Breadfan, and Am I Evil are all classics. As well as Last Caress/Green Hell and the infamous "So What".
Vin: "that's never been a thing". Sorry my dude but I get that all the time. And that is what Seger was talking about. Just people being ignorant in general and when you are living on the road, you just don't wanna deal with that shit.
And for the love of god, silence your damn phone!!!

Yeah, in rural areas, and in those years, long haired guys could get in a lot of trouble. My dad told me a story about when their band (he and my uncle) played a bar in Indiana where some Notre Dame football players hang out. This was late 60's/early 70's. They basically got their asses kicked by some football players for their long hair.

I had shoulder length hair all thru the late 70s, thru middle school, into the early 80’s and High school. I was called girlie or little girl by older random dudes, and even uncles and grand parents. I just sucked it up when I was younger, but by high school I started fighting back and that shit stopped. I only cut my hair when I went to a Military Academy after High school.

Especially who the song was written & originally recorded by. As others have written here, it is a Bob Seger song from 1973. A quick search of the song on Wikipedia will give you the background...if you care. And at that time, Seger's hair was a long as Sori's...lol. By the way, Metallica & many touring rockers long considered this song the perfect reflection of how the performer feels ....hence their decision to cover it 25 years later. One thing to consider for opening bands also, maybe not so much today but definately back in the '90's, the sound guy was there for the headliner. If he wanted to be lazy, he set the board for the main band and the other bands had to deal with it. That can make for some really bad mix issues if one band plays Eb and one plays B standard

Bob Seger wrote this about life on the road as a musician. In small towns during the 60s and the 70s longhairs were frowned upon. This song actually reminds me of the scene from Easy Rider in the diner where some of the locals are making remarks about Dennis Hopper's long hair.

The line is it woman is it man is simple. Male musicians who wore their hair long were often refered to as "girls" or "sissies". It was meant to be an insult. No need to overthink. Those of you old enough may remember the scene in Easy Rider when Finds, Nicholson and Hopper enter the eatery in the deep South.

I don't know if this was mentioned, a little teeny, tiny tidbit...you know barely worth mentioning but...… They covered this from Bob Segar :) And of course when the lyric about "Its it woman is it man" was about him arriving with Long hair... Because when written in 1972, was a different time seeing people with long hair, as oppose to now.

Sori got it right on this one Vin. The lyric "All the same old clichés, ‘Is that a woman or a man?" does refer to the regulars of the restaurant not being sure if the people who just walked in are men or women. This song was written around 1972 and middle america probably was still not used to guys with long hair and would first assume a person with long hair was a women. Great cover by Metallica.

In covering this song one of the fun things that came about was the contextual meaning , at least for me, changed. Bob Segar’s version was more in line with the way Sori understood the song, especially at the “is that a woman, or a man” line. I would like to see you guys react to the original at some point just to hear how it may or may not have a different meaning for you in some way.

I saw your reaction last night to Queen- Another one bites the dust. Please react to 1985 Live Aid performance, which has been documented as the best live Rock and Roll performance in history. It wasn’t even a “Queen” audience, but Freddie had the 72,000 crowd eating out of his hand in seconds! It was for the starving people in Africa and 16 hours of music in England and Philadelphia. Every band at the time played. They all had a 17 minute spot. Queen stole the show.
Freddie has been rated as the best Rock singer of all time. His range was 6-7 octave. If you have heard the Queen-David Bowie “Under Pressure” you will hear Freddie toward the end hit every note on the scale. Thank you.
