Just did my freckle shack install. It was the first mod I've ever done and took 30 minutes max. This is wonderful.
To those that have asked for a custom lens or one that more like the original. This isn't and problem at all, i can fully customise them to what every you like. Just drop the information in the box when adding it to the basket and i'll get it sorted for you. Thanks for all the orders so far :)

No it's not. The screen is smaller than the original. There is more work to be done for it to be the definitive mod.
@@afistfulofpimples1745 Its' smaller to keep a accurate 1 to 1 pixel replication, a lower resolution screen could be used but it would look worse.
@@mikewat6693 So why not use a higher resolution screen but larger, to equal the size of the original. No one wants a smaller screen. Faithful pixels or not, playing on a smaller screen is no fun. More work needs to be done.
@@afistfulofpimples1745 it's a start! I have an AMOLED kit for the GBC in the proto stage. It has full sized screen area, a bucketload of shell modding to get it to fit, and a ridiculous price tag. You could argue 'it's too expensive' or 'too much modding' Just as the last lot of Commenters on the 101 mod. The fact is, this is a huge step forward. No it's not perfect but with the days of 1:1 screen aspect well in the past, the chance of a 100% drop in no mod solution is drifting further away. This is the best we're going to get for this simplicity and price tag. You may be surprised but the design of this kit wasn't by accident or a random panel selection. This is the best we have in April 2019...

This was a great guide. My drop-in LCD finally arrived, I followed this guide and it took no less than 15 minutes with no problems.

@@kiozoki9090 When I ordered, they were currently sending out the first batch. Mine was part of the 4th or 5th batch, so it didn't arrive for like a month or two. I imagine it might be worse right now with the virus.
This is truly the final solution. 2019 is an amazing time to be alive.
I'm sure we will get a 1:1 proper sized screen one day! That screen is still smaller.
I decided to keep my clear Japan exclusive GBC all original including the screen except for the FS mod. The silver sides of the screen look good in the clear console.

This is the video I was waiting for.. and.. Ordered from Retro Modding. Fantastic work. SO MUCH simpler than shaving the case down.. Now to order a glass screen cover from Jelly.. and a nice replacement shell
$70 isn't too bad considering that the previous mods were double and some cases close to triple that. BennVenn did an outstanding job on this.

I have the same gameboy color with that clear purple case, and have had it since I was 5 or 6 years old as a gift from my grandmother. I am so tempted to order the kit and try it, but part of me thinks I wanna keep my childhood gameboy color as is, and buy a second hand one to do this mod. Thanks for the tutorial! This new screen he found is still smaller then the original. I thank him that it's easier to work with. Not all of us are handy with the iron. I hope one day he finds a nice screen for use that is same size or bigger.
Well, he's theorizing ideas for another screen that is identical to the GBC's original, but that's likely still a long ways off. Honestly, with the Freckle Shack LCD being backlit, AND with a custom lens (you don't see a reminder of tape over the LCD housing), you don't even notice the size difference. Plus, it's only a 2 mm difference anyways. Thanks for watching! 🙂

Does anyone have any tutorial how to install brightness controller that came with Freckle Shack? BennWenn said on his page that you need to solder 1 cable to make it work.

So, if you do this DIY and make the micro USB mod for the battery replacement you will get the best Gameboy color ever?
Finally a mod that will work this good with such low hassle, I hated frontlighting, it just wasn't that good

Hello, I installed a freckleshack today and went to screw the case back together but before I did, I thought I would give it a quick check from the front but because I am using a clear black shell, I can now see the kapton take covering the points below the screen and it looks ugly (being yellow). It didn't show on the atomic purple as there was no kapton tape covering these points. It is essential to cover these points with Kapton tape? Or is there an alternative you can suggest that won't ruin the aesthetic? Thanks.

I'm still having a lot of difficulties getting the GBC 101 mod done the old way. The one soldering point needed to the board is just insanely small, and honestly nothing fits no matter how much it's trimmed down.
I still have my original GBC from when I was probably 5 I refurbished it with new buttons speaker and shell now this will be the perfect last thing for me to do to it. Still can't believe I've had it for 20 years now !
Now, if only there was a kit similar to the FreckleShack, but for the DMG Gameboy... Awesome work, though... Seriously considering saving the money to buy this kit...
There also a Mcwill LCD now available for the gameboy color! Lots of options now!

It kind of looks like there's nothing supporting the bottom of the display to keep it from sliding up or down. Do the 3d printed side pieces hold it snug in place?
I just got freckleshack with brightness control but where an I suppose to solder the wire. This thing came with no instructions at all.
So it's no longer a 101 display? That's a plus because I'm loosing it with this lack of screens for my repairs, honestly it makes it harder to make a profit from 101 sp's

BennVennElectronics just watched it that's some pretty awesome tech for sure! Personally I'm going all hdmi to get rid of the OSSC in my setup, Super NT, Mega SG, UltraHDMI N64, AVS NES and soon to be GBA Consolizer but I opted to wait for the full case option so I expect that to be a few more months.
@@enthusiasticgamer88 were currently playing around with hdmi so expect some awesome new affordable gadgets!

Glad to hear it! And honestly, I used to be skeptical of these lenses as well. But this lens from Jellybelly Customs really just completes the mod. I'm not quite sure how to explain it. 🙂 The thing just feels and look so nice! If you end up not getting a custom lens, you can employ the vinyl/tape method like I did in my GBC101 part 2 mod video. Cheers!
Amazing tutorial! How about power consumption with everdrive X5 ? For example a clone gb boy colour have big problems with that!

Q: Is the new drop-in screen slightly smaller than the original? If so, is that why the JellyBelly custom screen lens is necessary to make it look professional?

By far the easiest backlit gbc I have ever made. The last four have been such a pain! But worth it haha.
