UPDATE: Hey everyone! Got a response from RGRS. In order to prevent this issue you need to make sure the touch sensor is trimmed (like I showed in the tutorial) & adhered (I used kapton tape) to the front half of the housing and not touching the rear shell. This completely fixes the issue! Hey everyone! After playing with the new screen some more, I am noticing an issue where the brightness is cycling through randomly. I reached out to Retro Game Repair Shop to see what is causing this issue and will report back when I find out more. I wish I knew this when filming so I can show you all. Stay tuned for updates.
My guess would be interference/cross talk between the ribbon cable and the touch sensor. Perhaps some sort of small shield between the two will fix it?
Gotta love seeing a non-destructive and completely reversible mod! As time goes on and more people mod systems, we're going to have less and less stock systems, which is kind of a bummer imo. I'd love to see more non-destructive mods come out in the future!
I highly doubt that. Millions upon millions of AGB's were sold and I'm sure a good percentage are still out there. And then there's the small percentage of Game Boy fans that do go ahead and modify their AGB's.
as much as I would like to agree, not only did millions of them sell, but honestly having a stock GBA sucks lmao. Screen is terrible, uses double As. Would much rather do some slight battery slot modding and put a cleanjuice in, and then use this. Very little damage while still removing all the modern day issues.
I know it's years later but whatever. Unless it's some rare variant that arguably belongs on a shelf, all you are doing by modding a GBA is extending it's functional lifespan and playability. I'm doing a no cut because it's a Japanese orange console in amazing shape. But I'm not gonna fault someone for completely gutting a GBA and replacing everything. Especially if it's kinda janky. Anything to keep it out of a landfill and in loving hands.
I actually think it's a pro that the screen brightness resets to max after power off. Otherwise you could find yourself with a big problem if the touch sensor ever fails.
Solderless/No Mod/Drop in screen replacements is such a massive improvement as it opens up the ability to mod a console to those that would otherwise be too uncomfortable with the install process. Ben’s Lynx 2 screen comes to mind. Not sure about that max brightness tho. The comparison against the FP screen was significant, how much does it affect usage in (Eg) day light/outdoors etc?
AliExpress also have replica copies of the rare Japanese market Gameboy screen lenses in both crystal and scratch resistant glass.. IE Pokémon centre NY in yellow font, Suicune, Pikachu, Zapdos, Super Mario, Hello Kitty and a few others.. so I can revamp these trashed rarer consoles and make them with more robust stuff. 🤣
@@Alex-CA it's less about the soldering and more about being able to restore the console to its original state, or use a different mod without the uninstall process being painful, and the mods done to other components making installing the new mod more complicated
Wow. This looks way easier to deal with than other options. I just found out my old GBA still works (it's not rare or anything, but it's spent a long time in a drawer) and this is something I might consider buying since it seems to be easy on someone like me who isn't at all experienced with this kind of thing.
Great video, made install very easy. The hardest part was correctly placing the touch sensor to prevent the random cycling. Thank you so much! A few things for people thinking of getting this kit. To my understanding, this kit now comes with the v5 board which makes the screen much brighter than the v3 board. The screen color looks a bit cool in the video (blue), mine is not quite as blue, more of a neutral color.
I have Version 5.4 boards that I received and yes, this should be something to note. I didn't need to trim the touch sensor or do a mod to get full brightness. the touch sensor is now on the other side of the ribbon so it actually folds into the space nicely.
Your channel is SO underrated. Not only are the tutorials very easy to follow, the amount of work that goes into the presentation is INSANE. You're definitely not getting the exposure you deserve.
I wouldnt buy one myself but for a first version it's pretty good! Hopefuly they keep working on improving this product as i can see it becoming very much in demand!
This was a great tutorial. The version I got had the touch sensor on the left side of the connector to the driver. Instead of cutting it, you can fold it to the front of the ribbon so it gets tucked into the front face. You can change the brightness by touching the N of the Nintendo Logo. Not sure if it's a newer revision but it works fine and haven't had the issue with brightness cycling so far. Keep up the good work, man!
Macho, thanks for the update. I was having the same issue. I bought this kit after watching your vid and was pulling my hair out as to what id done wrong. Ive now kapton taped the sensor to the top half of the shell away from the bottom half and so far so good. No more brightness cycling. Thanks very much for chasing this and updating us.
This Video made me the happiest I've been this whole week. Not cuz i found an easy screen mod but it just made me happy seeing somthing that i am exited for and not to mention how calming and in my element this made me feel. thx dude. :)
Thank the lord, I get my kit and gba on the same day. I have taken apart tons of consoles now but never a handheld, I didn’t want to ruin my first gba mod!
I bought this because of this video. Also had to get an iFixit kit for the screws. This was my first time nodding anything (aside from putting an SSD in my PS4). Used this video as a step-by-step guide and it took me 15-20 minutes to complete. It really is as simple as it looks, and the screen is a MASSIVE improvement on the original.
Just finished installing this into my Platinum GBA and its working great! Thank you so much for this video! I will echo what a lot of other people on here have mentioned, your videos are extremely high quality and well done, keep it up man! One thing, not sure if it is a difference with having a 32pin connector on the main board, but I only had two screws inside to take out instead of 3 as mentioned in the video. Other than that, everything was the same. Thanks again for the very well done instructional video!
Just installed mine, followed your tutorial and got it done in no time. My touch sensor was on the opposite side and didn't require me to cut mine but still great video and a great product!
This is awesome I remember when I was younger how I thought that i broke the screen of my elder brothers gba, but was actually the polarizer was burned. Gonna surprise him with this hahaha
The best feature of this mod imo is that it looks perfect for people who'd like to have the backlight but are not very comfortable with solding. The steps are easy and quick, and though it won't be the perfect thing it seems to do the job very well. I've always been curious about modding stuff but always a bit afraid of starting a project, this might be a good way to step into this area slowly and see if I wanna go further after... Thanks for the video!
The biggest pron for me is using the device with the front shield coming from factory and the screen with original size and proportions to the rest of the device, thank you man for the video
Wow just when I thought the FunnyPlaying IPS V2 kit was the definitive way to add an IPS screen. This defo will be a welcome addition, always prefer non-destructive mods wherever possible. Amazing video as always mate!
I've actually done this mod already for a GBA I made for my wife. If you do solder those 2 points on the motherboard the brightness and clarity is even better than that if the Funnyplaying. Great video Tito, I always look forward to Thursdays now. Take care.
This looks like an amazing mod for people who are afraid to solder or dont know how, I'd still personally go for one of the screens with more features.
Dude..I love that you're giving people sooooo many options that don't require them to possibly destroy a 101 unit for the screen. Everyone is doing their part for video game preservation on the software and emulation side. Kudos to you for continually seeking out the best way to enjoy retro games from an original hardware POV. That is also a valuable part of that preservation, Tito. Cheers man.
Thank you TechnoGatsby! Totally agree! So many great options out there, so no need to harvest 101 screens anymore. What a time to be alive!! Cheers buddy!
I only have one GBA and its one of the Toys R Us exclusive black ones so the ability to mod the screen without messing up the shell is awesome. I hope they come up with something like this for the Game Gear

your intro is awesome... when I watch one video a week... if I watch two, three or four on the same day, jesus christ enough... I need to skip it. but still, great editin skills and high value content here. cheers.
This is fantastic. I picked up an IPS upgrade off ebay claiming it was the "v2" version (Funny Play clone it appears) which was likely a V1 as the screen will shut down and console will turn itself off after only a minute of playing. I also found the display to be way too bright even at a low settings so I'm excited to see this one is much dimmer!
Definitely seems like a good option for anyone who doesn't know how to solder or is uncomfortable with surface mount soldering, but having done a FunnyPlaying kit recently, it seems like that would be a more polished and preferable option for anyone who is comfortable with soldering. I also agree it's seems like an excellent option for someone with a rare GBA and doesn't want to make any permanent changes to the board and shell.
Looking how anything retro has gone up in prices, i wont be doing any major modding on original gameboys but this kit is really nice! I will wait for a v2 😊
Nice vid..clear and easy to understand which is REALLY necessary for showing these mod tutorials. ...you really remind me of Colin over at This Does Not Compute. A++
Awesome video like always Tito, Great job! Personally, as convenient as i find this mod, I'll still stick with the FunnyPlaying IPS kit for three reasons: For starters, I've gotten used to the slightly bigger display you get with that kit (been playing my AGS-101 lately and the display feels so tiny now, hahah). Secondly, I always buy beaten up GBA's to restore, so swapping out the OEM shells and lenses is not an issue to me at all. And lastly, because as a hobby game boy/walkman/console modder, I just... Enjoy soldering a Lot! That extra ammount of work needed to tune a GBA to perfection is what really makes me enjoy this hobby, and i'm so glad that more and more people are getting on board :)
Yeah as somebody that has little to no experience at all in modding consoles or the like, this is a great product to replace my GBA with!!! Easy to use!!
I love soldering, but no cut is huge. I go glass for a lense if ever possible, but not having to cut means able to use any shell, which is fantastic... Maybe ill make use of one of my random original shells with one! Great vid MNP!
Feels like we're approaching the singularity with GBA IPS mods. Between the amazing screens in some mods and the drop-in ease of others, it's only a matter of time before all the best features get rolled into a single, flawless, super easy kit. Seems like we'll only have to wait a tiny bit longer. For me, a no-cut mod is a huge draw. I was willing to compromise on some simple soldering, but cutting just never seemed like a good solution to me, especially when I want to keep my transparent original shell. I'm glad these are coming out and I hope they become the norm.
i doubt it myself, all kits have pros and cons, but soldering shouldnt be seen as a con, because there isnt much other way to control the screen options by pressing buttons. This screen might look good, but it is also smaller in screensize and more bad quality (blueish glow from what i read in comments here but not confirmed myself) as the FunnyPlaying V2 kit, and a bigger screen requires cutting shell. And these touch sensors dont look as decent as their counterparts with the button presses, but for those you will need to solder, i dont think any tape will stick that long as a good solder job. We should be happy that Nintendo actually gave us solid solder points we can use to connect the wires.
I do not have a rare gba but my parents found the gba I had when I was a kid, with games and a game shark, was thinking on putting ips screen on it but didn't wanted to mess the shell since I have good memories of playing megaman and legacy of goku games on it, definitely getting one of this kits on that console now.
DON'T MISLEAD PEOPLE This kit is still drop-in. The wire that comes with the new kit doesn't need to be soldered, you just have to wrap it around the positive battery terminal of the motherboard and stick some tape, this makes possibe the option to change between 10 levels of brightness instead of 5. You can solder that wire if you so desire, but YOU'RE NOT FORCED TO
Yes, I got a Pokemon special edition, so I'm super happy I won't have to damage the shell. This also means once I get my hands on the Celebi and Latios/Latias editions, I can do the same!
Cool video Tito! I know the video is a bit old and I am late to the party. The kit in the link (in the description) points to a kit with soldering required. Is it because the Retro Game Shop ran out of kits from your video or is it possible the website is redirecting because the item is not found? Regardless, this video is amazing. Love your work and your content! :)
Hey Tito! I don't know if this has been brought up yet in comments, but I recently installed this mod and had one major problem: no image on screen! Well, I followed your advice from part 2 of your Dreamcast project, slowed down, and looked over the whole build: turns out, RGRS made some changes since your install! 1) the ribbon cable connecting the screen to the motherboard has been flipped around, so that the touch sensor is now on the left. I wasn't even looking at the connections and ended up installing it backwards. (Doy!) Despite my initial frustration, it's a welcome change, since it now allows a lot more room for the sensor to be slid into position. 2) The screen is now a larger IPS, so you will need a larger screen lens to go with it. 3) Maybe this was just my kit, but the left spacer was just a hair too tall, resulting in a crooked screen after install. I sanded it down a bit to get the proper height. 4) It's so much brighter now! I would put it on par with the McWill or any other generic IPS you can find online. Color saturation is at proper levels, too! Thanks for making such an awesome series of videos...even when I am just relaxing, your calm and friendly presentation just makes them a great way to just pass the time. Like I said before... you're the Bob Ross of console mods!
Absolutely watching this mod and waiting for it to come out. I have a white transparent shell with green transparent buttons and accents on my ags001, but the original screen.
Because of how simple that looks I want to try it myself. But before I do I wanna at least get an original version and one that’s broken so that way in case I mess it up I don’t break the system permanently and I can still have one to play on. I am not at all familiar with any kind of programming or soldering or any kind of modding so this looks like a really fun Modification to use especially because I like the design of the original GBA but I still love my GBA SP.
Lol when you used a gasket in the past and you know to never do it again. I like the idea of the kit for people who don’t want to fuss around and want a slightly better screen without having to worry about a new lense. I don’t like the limitations of the picture quality vs funny playing, the option to use buttons to adjust brightness and the dim screen.
True, I would agree the FunnyPlaying kits are a bit more professional in the sense of operation but are a bit more work. Cheers dude! Great to hear from you!
2 things, for anyone wondering. 1. The brightness mod he mentioned also works on 32 pin boards 2. the screen is distractingly blue tinted. I ended up selling mine because it's tiring to look at for long periods of time. You can even see in his video that its VERY blue
@@187StaticMr I don't necessarily blame him. A lot of people don't notice these things, just like a lot of people will buy a $150 65" on black friday and get a terrible display lol I've always been very sensitive to quality in screens so I noticed right away. TL;DR If you're reading this and care about quality, DON'T get this screen. If you don't mind a harsh blue tint over everything, the screen is otherwise, not bad
@@lolztony the blue hint is due to calibration, i bet they will be calibrated differently across all these LCDs, because they are actually NOT CALIBRATED. Also the 32/40 both can use the brightness mod. And it's completely worth it, night and day. That being said, i still prefer brightness control buttons and soldering and using the lg ips lcd.
I think you actually should trim those little nubs that run along the bottom and right hand side of the front shell’s interior. Otherwise the panel might sit at an angle. I’ve modded my GBA using the same kit and that’s definitely something to look out for. One thing I didn’t hear you mention is much reduced power draw when compared to funnyplaying. According to makho’s tests, at max brightness funnyplaying gives you approximately 40% of stock battery life while this kit reaches 70%! That’s a massive difference if you care about battery life. If anyone is curious - look up “cloud game store” on AliExpress. It’s the original seller of this particular kit (there’s a similar one for the SP too). Their shells are a bit crap, though, so I’d look for these elsewhere.

Great review! God bless you and yours! Praying for you.
Such a better tutorial than handheld legends. I followed theirs exactly as in the video and it's completely wrong. Thank you!
That’s super cool, I hope one comes out for the GameBoy advance sp too
Yeah as somebody that has little to no experience at all in modding consoles or the like, this is a great product to replace my GBA with!!! Easy to use!!
Best AGS-001 kit, will buy this one soon, just need to find another console.
I have a moded clear purple gba, and I will definitely use this screen
wish i could buy a kit. sold out everywhere. funnyplaying v2 is also sold out. kinda happy though that the commmunity lives on and supports these guys
Good Job Titto, thanks for the honest opinion on the product.
This helped me a lot thanks for making this guide!
I love soldering, but no cut is huge. I go glass for a lense if ever possible, but not having to cut means able to use any shell, which is fantastic... Maybe ill make use of one of my random original shells with one! Great vid MNP!
So glad you enjoyed this one! Cheers!
This is really cool! Might have to get me one of these.
I do not have a rare gba but my parents found the gba I had when I was a kid, with games and a game shark, was thinking on putting ips screen on it but didn't wanted to mess the shell since I have good memories of playing megaman and legacy of goku games on it, definitely getting one of this kits on that console now.
Thanks for the video Nacho! Great review
Thank you Renzo! Cheers buddy!
I love my Gameboy Advance SP since I did the funny playing IPS mod and a shell which I have since discovered it glows in the dark
Finally smth well done, unlike the crappy designed screens that requires cutting the damn plastic off
I'm fine with the brightness. It's lit. As long as i can see and I'm saving battery I'm good.
DON'T MISLEAD PEOPLE
This kit is still drop-in. The wire that comes with the new kit doesn't need to be soldered, you just have to wrap it around the positive battery terminal of the motherboard and stick some tape, this makes possibe the option to change between 10 levels of brightness instead of 5.
You can solder that wire if you so desire, but YOU'RE NOT FORCED TO
really?
@@dannyxkai Yup, just tried it out with my GBA. The wire just has to be attached to the positive pole
Great content, I love this channel!
Thank you!
just bought a pokemon center celebi edition gameboy advance, and this will be PERFECT for it
That's some mad skillz dropping in that sticky gasket on the first try. ;)
Its him taking it out but played in reverse. 😏
@@prettybluefoxes lol yeah I know, just bein' a phunny guy =P
The mod is already available. Link on the video description.
9:52-- are there other IPS mod kits specifically for the GBA out there that have pixel mode? That'd be a really cool feature to have.
Thats what I'm waiting for! So glad someone else mentioned this
Lol when you used a gasket in the past and you know to never do it again.
I'm glad to pick up on that tip. Thanks for reinforcing it.
I would certainly consider going from a non-lit original GBA screen to an adequately lit one far more then “slightly better” lol.
2 things, for anyone wondering.
1. The brightness mod he mentioned also works on 32 pin boards
2. the screen is distractingly blue tinted. I ended up selling mine because it's tiring to look at for long periods of time. You can even see in his video that its VERY blue
Exactly, but not a single word about this.
It feels like watching some commercial instead of a review
@@thepokerus4184 I’ve tried 4 different screen setups now and the LG funnyplaying blows the others out of the water
@@lolztony correct, which is why I said i also prefer it. It's the best
it's taken a few kits to get a true no solder no cut IPS kit but at least its here now!
I know, at long last!
great tutorial man, thanks!
great stuff! subscribed👍
Just ordered my a couple days ago. Can't wait to get this. I was just donated a GBA and find it unplayable without a back light
