CORRECTION: The Game Boy Color's bootrom contains several unique palettes for original Game Boy games (including nearly every pre-GBC first party game) which are initiated as default when it reads the cart's ROM header. In fact, it's more robust than how the Super Game Boy interprets color for non-enhanced games
Well, the problem with this implementation is that the color is static throughout the game. The SGB can receive palette change commands from SGB enhanced games like Pokémon Red (for example, going from one area to another). The CGB, can’t.
@@StrobeFlashLite I was about to say this! This is one of my favorite features of playing older Game Boy games on a Game Boy Color. Makes games look really cool in different ways and you can change it when you start them up every time!
Thankfully, Nintendo doesn’t follow that trend as much as other companies. While I am indeed a fan, I know they are not perfect. Additionally, he openly stated that the project only required about $500k to make, thus making pocketing the $1 million in crowdfunded money and the construction of the studio to begin with an additional violation of the copyright protecting CBS's claim to the Trek IP. The funniest thing is Alec Peters's day job is playing lawyer. He KNEW what he was doing, and did it anyway. I have no sympathy for him. He got in my opinion what he knew could have happened and likely deserved. It is unfortunate that it led to the curtailment of Trek fan fic on this platform, but the worse and more heinous act would have been to allow the project to continue to potentially damage the Trek IP when it comes to the furtherment of canon, as it would have done with Season 1 of Discovery chasing the same content. John Knight you would need to change the arrangement of the cells. 2x2 would give a max voltage of 8.4v while the max with fresh AAs is slightly under 7v. A quick and dirty hack would use a diode with a 1v+ voltage drop.

I'd highly recommend the BennVenn screen option over MW Embedded - the battery life is drastically better. And, y'know, BennVenn kinda pioneered this stuff.
I'm aware of the pinball lag issue with the early V1 of the PCB, but what is supposed to be wrong with everdrives? I have an Everdrive X3 that seems to be working fine.
@@JonathosDX multiple people on the Krikzz forum have reported that the graphics freeze but the audio keeps playing when using the X7 with the BennVenn mod.
Interesting. Haven't seen any real complaints elsewhere. Everdrives do have pretty high power draw, though - if the GBCs needed new caps and were already straining, I could definitely see a backlit screen pushing it over the edge. Though I'd suspect any of the kits would cause issues, given BV and MW both use the same actual screen.
Man your videos are the best! Exceptional commentary and editing! Only question I had after watching this is, how is the battery life of the new screen compared to the other units? With a much better screen and back-light, it must have half the battery life?
nice job on that clear case mod! it came out looking really nice... and finally the GB Color is worth playing!...if only it had some more colorful games!
10:17 i love that the 8 Bit Guy loves games but isn't very good at playing them haha (just a fun observation here btw, he's just demonstrating the games lol)
Benefit of having double pixel resolution is that you have 4X the pixels pumping out color which means the LCD wash out effect is negated. Beautifully done!
@Bailey Washington I really prefer the correct/original colors of the GBC as well. That's why I couldn't stand playing GBC games on an AGS-101 (even most GBA games show incorrect colors on the backlit screens). The solution for people like us right now is sadly only in emulators that offer color correction. Gambatte (a Retroarch core) is extremely accurate and also supports color correction. I've found that using it on a Nintendo 3DS gives something really close to what an actual GBC with backlight would have been like.
@@Izquierda There are a lot of reasons for this. Gameboy Color and (especially) early Gameboy Advance games were designed with the reflective LCD displays in mind. Because of how they work, they are naturally dimmer than a backlit LCD. These games tend to look washed out when played on a much brighter backlit screen. In my opinion, a PROPER front light would be best if you're looking for a Gameboy Color with authentic color. If you take a front light out of an AGS-001 GBA and fit it into a GBC, it looks fantastic. There are some aftermarket front light kits, but they're pretty terrible. If a proper front light kit was ever made (with a good light panel like the AGS-001 had) I think it would be the best solution.
For the impatient: 00:00 Video, and some Context. 03:26 Start of the actual modding whoever is helped with this! :) And, Great video, fascinating content!
yep only minor quibbles: black border around the game image like at 2:08, cartridges stick out of the slot, adapter required for headphones. good enough for me
Yes, but Gameboy / Gameboy Color games stuck out of the SP quite a bit making it uncomfortable and the games looked tiny on screen as it had the same issue the regular Advance did. Also there were 2 models of the SP released, the AGS-101 which had the best screen now sells for around $100 used today, while the other model has terrible viewing angles. Personally I like the Gameboy Colors feel in the hands more than the others.
0:50 "I think that game developers were too busy trying to "Wow!" consumers with graphics and they kind of forgot that game needs to have good gameplay."

I still can’t believe how I played it without the light back in 1998. but it was very fun in childhood
Glad to see you're also following the whole axinar thing with cbs
Brilliant video man.
Very tempted to get this and start Pokemon Red again!
What does it do to battery life, though?
I'm wanting to do see if I could do an 18650 (or similar) mod.
Adam Carmichael you know there's 14500 cells that are the AA size, they just give more voltage... Much easier mod.
@@lightdark00 Will a Game Boy accept the voltage? Those things are way higher than 1.5 volts and can kill some machines.
@@lightdark00 I wonder if a pouch type battery would work even better, maybe allow for easy charging via USB.
John Knight you would need to change the arrangement of the cells. 2x2 would give a max voltage of 8.4v while the max with fresh AAs is slightly under 7v. A quick and dirty hack would use a diode with a 1v+ voltage drop.
Huh, this explains why my GB color is so dim. I turned it on for the first time in years, and just assumed the backlight stopped working, lol "The More You Know!"
Nice mod, may need to give this a go myself now.
It's actually on presale now, almost out of stock!
I love everything about this channel.
Cool! I remember watching that old video SOOO many years ago.
I Can’t WAIT for for the RetroFlag GPi Original GameBoy like case for the Raspberry Pi Zero and Zero W to be released!
Wow, the screen itself does look phenomenal. The doubled pixel density really makes for a razor-sharp image. Still, most folks would be just as happy with the backlit GBA SP, model AGS-101.
Sadly, the AGS-101 it's really hard to get, and costs like 50 USD, or even more. And it requires to destroy the GBC shell.
@@erik19borgnia lol i paid $134 for my gba sp ags 101, 2 weeks ago and it was used on ebay and it was the cheapest one that was not broken and didnt have actual teeth marks on it, and it did come with plenty of scratches
@@jasonbrown467 I was talking about just the screen to do the mod. And it was a year ago. Now they are even more expensive. I actually got this screen last year (the Midwest Embedded one) and I'm pretty happy with it. In the last year I played a lot of games in my GBC and it was a blessing to be able to really see.
I love watching these videos ‘cause to be honest, there is no way I could go through all of that without messing up at some point.
Played GBC from 6 to 20 :')
This makes me happy
Why would I buy a Switch when I can just play Mario on a C64?
Why would you buy a C64 just so you can play mario?
@@alexc3504 Maybe he already owns a C64?
@@user-pi5xz5je4y And yet I've never been able find a working C64 :(
What is with that thing breaking down? They all seem to have bad PLA chips. I have two VIC-20s and they work perfectly fine...even though they're older!
you are sooo stupid
Why would you buy a Switch or a C64 to play SMB when you can play the original rom on almost anything?
It would be a 1000 times easier to get a copy of SMB and an NES or Famiclone than to find a working C64 and the hardware necessary to run SMB C64.
I'd highly recommend the BennVenn screen option over MW Embedded - the battery life is drastically better. And, y'know, BennVenn kinda pioneered this stuff.
Has BennVenn resolved the compatibility issues with the Everdrive though? I'd be annoyed if I bought one only to find out I can't use my Everdrive.
This looks amazing, definitely going to get some more tools and give this a try!
That turned out so much better than I thought. Made me want to get my Gameboy color modded.
Man your videos are the best! Exceptional commentary and editing! Only question I had after watching this is, how is the battery life of the new screen compared to the other units? With a much better screen and back-light, it must have half the battery life?
The McWill backlight only gets about 3-4 hours battery life, however BennVenn's freckleshack backlight mod gets like 14 hours and is easier to install
Don't bother trying to ask 8BG any questions - he NEVER replies to comments.
Judging by other comments...
Nope.
More like 1/10th the battery life.
So uhh yeah. Thanks, but no thanks. XD
well, the screen size isn't 1/1 to the original, but I think the sacrifice is worth it.
nice job on that clear case mod! it came out looking really nice... and finally the GB Color is worth playing!...if only it had some more colorful games!
Man i love the 80s synthwave soundtrack of your videos
10:17 i love that the 8 Bit Guy loves games but isn't very good at playing them haha
(just a fun observation here btw, he's just demonstrating the games lol)
Thanks for speaking up about Nintendo abusing RUclips and copyright takedowns.
I love the reflective screen, last time I bought GBA SP AGS 001 and it is perfect to play outside in sunny day.
I love my old Gameboy. It is fun to bring it out and play it every so often.
The new screens are out of stock... I can only imagine your video caused a rush to buy on their website :)
And the price of the Gameboy increasing on eBay
How are you verified? You have 27 subscribers?
@AstronomyToday how???
@AstronomyToday this is false you need 100k subs
IPS screens work the same
Expected retrobrite-ing but never got any.
Still top notch video 👌
The Anologue Pocket is the one I'm waiting for, the hardware built in that is insane!
Benefit of having double pixel resolution is that you have 4X the pixels pumping out color which means the LCD wash out effect is negated. Beautifully done!
Finally? I've had mine modded with a backlight for about 10 years...
You should've used the Benn Venn's freckleshack. Way easier to intall and their newer batches come with a brightness controller
@Bailey Washington cheaper than the competitors
@Bailey Washington frontlighting is even worse since all the colors become washed out
@Bailey Washington the freckleshack color palette is almost identical to the OEM LCD. Designed that was for this exact reason
Wow! Thanks for posting this. I can’t wait to get my hands on one!
No idea how I ended up here but your voice is good to listen to lmao
For the impatient:
00:00 Video, and some Context.
03:26 Start of the actual modding
whoever is helped with this! :)
And, Great video, fascinating content!
It's a shame that you didn't solder the brightness cables.
You're missing out on a good portion of the functionality of the screen.
@Chiron Keller you're*, mind*
@@marshmallowdub You mean *might.
I just saw the title and cried a bit because I've always wanted this when playing...
0:34 what a great point you made here. I totally agree that the game play and genuine games ideas affected by that!
2:35 That's the most accurate picture of Nintendo, ever.
You could just get a backlight GBA SP and have a more compact unit with all of the controls in the place he wants them. But that would be sane.
yep only minor quibbles: black border around the game image like at 2:08, cartridges stick out of the slot, adapter required for headphones. good enough for me
@@nicktonic The mod cuts the top and the bottom anyways which annoys me
That’s so cool, your videos are brilliant!
Awesome stuff, man.
Didn't the Gameboy Advanced SP basically handle all of this and include a rechargable battery?
Wrong form factor
Yes, but Gameboy / Gameboy Color games stuck out of the SP quite a bit making it uncomfortable and the games looked tiny on screen as it had the same issue the regular Advance did. Also there were 2 models of the SP released, the AGS-101 which had the best screen now sells for around $100 used today, while the other model has terrible viewing angles. Personally I like the Gameboy Colors feel in the hands more than the others.
Yes thank you. I was wondering why this wasn't pointed out before
Why is the thumbnail backwards?
Maybe it's like: "Compare THIS to THAT" instead of: "From this to that".
Mistake or joke.
Fantastic review/mod.
Oh wow. That is a MASSIVE improvement over the original screen!
the screen is a bit smaller than the original
And a little to the right in this video. Unplayable
Literally unplayable
0:50 "I think that game developers were too busy trying to "Wow!" consumers with graphics and they kind of forgot that game needs to have good gameplay."
well, there's finally a proper backlite mod for the color! I broke mine years back trying to mod it the old fashioned way which required a GBASP frontlit panel.
Good video as always. But what takes it from good to great is always that Anders Jensen music at the end. I want him to do the soundtrack to my funeral.
In the thumbnail you got rid of the backlight lol
I came here hoping to remove the pesky backlight from my GBC.
Was thinking about getting the gameboy......now i really need this backlight mod for sure
Tomorrow I will post a game boy like console that is withing a Game Boy Cartridge! No Joke :)
