@@gogoyubari366 I have read several reviews that were less than flattering by music critics at the time. Yes it is true that Emerson borrowed many pieces from prior musicians, however his delivery and rendition are out of this world. Lake was an awesome vocalist but was never taken seriously as an accomplished guitarist. Palmer was recognized by the great Buddy Rich as a talented percussionist. Things were different back in time of ELP’s reign before the presence of social media. Still to this day, the R&R hall of fame has not properly recognized ELP.. Really?
For me, Keith is one of the greatest soloists in rock/jazz etc. He never played a boring phrase in his entire career. His solos seem perfectly constructed - as well as perfectly played.
Funny how I have this solo sculpted in my brain from how much I've listened to it in my adolescence...best damn keyboard player in rock (and more) period!
Pictures was the first Cassette I ever bought [1971 ish]. The sounds still live with me. I saved up and bought a Sennheiser headset of 12 GBP and enjoyed many of ELP's works in full glory without upsetting my folks.
The beginning part IS "The Old Castle." The eerie moog solo, classic! Took me a few years to realize it, but you have to listen to the original Mussorgsky enough to hear how Keith warped it. It's a masterpiece of rocked-up melody, and pure Emerson. Wakeman or anyone else would not have done it this way.
@@andywickstrom6297 . Actually the second part, with the organ, sounds more like The Old Castle to me. Pumped up to the max of course but the melody is the same.
Thanks for not chopping this song up! Also, very nice collection of pictures. I don't think even his fans realize how virtuosic Emerson was in this one and only live performance (that I know of). Both with controlling the portamento knob on his Moog synth and with the lovely runs, chords, and attitude he demonstrated with the Hammond! RIP maestro and thanks for all the years of escape from reality!
If I need a touch of eureka, I jam this shit, Mr. Emerson, you were a fuckin' wizard, Mr. Lake, you were a profoundly important musician/artist/performer/entertainer, and Mr. Palmer, thank you for everything, including Asia!
We played Interplay back in January and a punter asked if it was ELP. I just listened to Old Castle, most definitely a reference there. Thanks for saying so.
We played Interplay last month and a punter came up and asked if it was ELP. I just listened to Old Castles and can see why he said that. Thanks for the confirmation.
This is one of my all time favs. Brilliant synth and Hammond work like nothing I have ever heard since. By the way, I always thought the first part didn’t resemble the theme of the original Mussorgsky Old Castle enough to be called that as well, but after tearing it apart for many years, simply because I love it so much, there are some similarities. You just gotta look really hard for them lol. Keith REALLY took some liberties on the melody 😊 Then again, that’s just my opinion. You might be right. Maybe Keith just made it up as an intro to the wonderful Hammond interpretation that follows the melody a little more closely. I guess we’ll never really know. But man, what an extraordinary, innovative player. Miss you, Keith 🎹❤️
No mistake. The synth solo, and the first bars of the organ solo, are a variation on Mussorgskij's Old Castle melody. Slow it down 3 times and listen carefully. The hammond enunciates the theme in the closing.
Mussorgskij was quite mangled here, but... well... ask poor Verdi and his Va'Pensiero: the sweetest melody in History, Emerson turned it into a nasty modal nightmare.
@@giume8979 Meh, what they do here is merely in good fun, and the playing is great too. This is more of a jam based around some of Mussorgsky's themes if anything, and it does a good job at what it is. Its not a good Mussorgsky interpretation, but its certainly a good prog rock jam and that Hammond organ solo is brilliant! Also, Modal Nightmare?? Modes are where all the fun is at. ;)
Nobody wants to slow it down. If I want to listen to Mussorgsky I can. They are three extremely accomplished musicians, there's nothing 'mangled' about it. They were a progressive rock band, it's not supposed to sound neat and tidy. It's a stream of consciousness in music form.
What I find so sad is Emerson killing himself because he could no longer play. But he was a genius at transcribing classical works into amazing progressive rock. If he had just continued doing that, and using sequencers only if necessary, there is no telling how many more fantastic works like PAAE he could have created.
@@kathyratino962 Of course, he was despondent over his inability to play due to the nerve issues in his hands. But did a huge disability (going deaf!) stop Beethoven? His greatest works were composed while he wa deaf. Bach went blind, and composed the wondrous Art of Fugue. Imagine an Emerson/Palmer transcribed Ring Cycle opera! Computer game music. A transcribed Beethoven 9th! There is no limit to what he could have done.
@@kathyratino962 hi pumpkin. FYI it came out later after his death that in addition to his other problems he had a golf ball-sized tumor in his abdomen. He also admittedly was a frequent user of the Almighty nasal sugar. I think the great man definitely had enough serious issues to make one think that suicide was the only way. So sad, I lost my lifetime Idol. And then the great Jeff Beck had to go and pass away. As Greg Lake sang death is life.
The mistake is yours! This are the old castle and blues variations. the first part is the old castle and actually there are parts from the original of mussorgsky in it. The organ part are the variation on the theme of the old castle in the blues form
This band and this music was terribly dangerous for the liberal economic system and for the spiritual development too, that's why nowadays we give you reggaeton instead.
Palmer’s drumming in this is one of my favorite things in all of rock and roll. Absolutely spellbinding.
Greatest Hammond organ player of all time
One of the best live album in rock history
What just blows my mind is that these 3 were just in their 20’s turning out awesome pieces like this one. So underrated & so ahead of their time!
Where do you get your ratings from?

I definitely wouldn't call them underrated. They're one of the greatest prog rock bands ever. It's the public that buy records not poncy critics
Emerson's Hammond work here-from the tone to his incomparable playing is simply without peer-certainly in rock.
None can ever truly compare to this keyboardist extraordinaire
This is what Classic Prog Rock is all about. Three brilliant youngsters with a superb Talent.
RIP Keith,& Greg.

Me too. I think I could sing it note for note!
Same here, I know every note but trying to transpose the blues variation part to my keyboard proved impossible. Very tricky
I lessen to this song and I hear it in my mind all day long but in my head it does not stop.

My favorite track. A mix of classical and blues
@flykeys Mine too. Hear something new every time i listen ❤
THESE GUYS WERE TOP SHELF ... ALL THE WAY... REALLY GREAT MUSICIANS, WHOSE SHOES ARE UNFILLABLE
There will never be another ELP!
My favorite part of this album/CD!!!! Thanks.
Dave McKenzie mine too.
The nutrocker is mine! But I love the whole album.

Rest in Peace Keith your music will live for years
They'll continue making mention of him for quite some time, I absolutely guarantee it

Yes, listen to the original and you see very well Keiths way of converting master pieces from The Masters!
The greatest of them all...
3:09 oh those drums, perfection
懐かしい~~!
ELP最高~~
Perfect. Thank you. From the opening to closing whooping synthesizer. ELP at the top of their form.
Jason, you are right!
Well said.
Keith is great on keyboards, but I love Greg on bass. Plus Carl is fucking superb on drums.

Keith Emerson ..The best !!!!
is the Fu.. ing God of the keyboards!!!
The intentional Hammond discord at 03:14 is phenomenal.
Oh, if only there were a video of this masterpiece.
Wonderful músic... And pictures!! Thanks for remember them!!

The one and the only ELP
It just doesn't get any better than this.
And it's LIVE!!
Totally badass!!
How they came up with this after listening to the original version will never cease to amaze me
Outstanding.
Great adaptation.
A very inspired improvisation !With a reference to Bill Evans /Interplay!!!

I didn't realise it comes in at 3:24. I just listened to the begining, whic I can hear elements of Interplay from the start.
Pure undiluted genius. So glad I have this on vinyl.
Miss you Keith :(
Wow! Just wow.
Freakin jam! ☮️
I miss them a lot. :(

Don't really hear any Old Castle until the Hammond comes in. Love it anyway.
the phrase at 0.26 comes from Mussorgski's "The Old Castle"
No man, it's there right in the moog solo! Real twisted, but just like other Emersonic renditions.
I wouldn't even go there with any negative criticism of this classic masterpiece 😃

3:00 burning Hammond! Emo was king of stage acrobatics
Right at 3:47 is where the 8-track tape clicked to the next track. Rude interruption that became part of the song.
Exactly. And the CD has a pause between the tracks.
0:20 that photo I always thought greg lake was holding a huge gandalf pipe turns out he isnt
I hope John Peel enjoyed this !

C'è chi è cresciuto con Emerson, Lake & Palmer e chi con i Merdaskin.
The fact that Emerson and Wakeman are regarded as equals is laughable.
