  • The Volkswagen Vanagon T3 Westfalia is more than just a regular car. So it's fitting that we take an approach to a vehicle that has offered a different experience than any car, motorcycle, truck or van we've ever done for Regular Car Reviews. Sure, RCR has done plenty of weird car reviews, and plenty of sentimental car reviews. But nothing like this piece of rolling romanticism, a van that's a poem to nostalgia, and to the ways in which cars can shape us. Because a car is almost like art. And the Volkswagen Vanagon T3 Westfalia is almost like home.
This is the Regular Car Reviews 2020 Special: a look into the history of a camper van that aspired to be more than the family vehicle, more than an automotive footnote, and more than just a memory. Enjoy.

    Ok, this made me cry.
Not just by how well-made this is, but...
...the moment you realize that your dad isn't some guy that "thinks he knows everything and naggs you everyday" but he's just like you! He make ends meet, he lives and survives in the same way you do, with the tomorrow's uncertainty knocking at the door.
And there's a moment in your life that... you become him! You get on his shoes and then, you have a cathartic experience where you see yourself in your child, where you stand where your dad (or mom) stood, telling about life and how difficulty and wild it is.
This moment is where moments, and cars, like this become essential parts of your life - building who you are and what you'll be.
This is life. Live it now!

Very well spoken and a lovely comment. This video hit home sort of. I never really had a father. It made growing up difficult. Although this being said I still had great memories, and had some male figures to look up to. I hope to become a great father who is understanding, funny, and firm. Although the lack of a father this video still had a feeling of nostalgia.

this hit way too close to home in tears right now, my father recently died this year and i always knew him as that. he was just like me living his life and always afraid of what tomorrow will bring. thank you for reminding me that although my dad was dead-beat and had many problems he still survived and he wanted to make his life an example of what not to do. he would always be honest and real with me because he knew that i understood his problems i would never know the severity of them after he passed but he still held on for the worst and he would never give up. he would always tell me "me caigo mil veces, pero me paro mil y una veces" meaning that he would fall 1000 times but he would stand up 1001 times. he will always be in my and his family's hearts and be remembered as the good person he still was despite his many crises

When we put the valve rocker arms back on it was burning oil, smoke everywhere. So we called *his* dad up, and Poppy told us to not put 4 turns on the rocker arms, like the compleat guide said, but to only put 2 turns on 'em, since we were putting the old ones back on instead of putting in new ones.

Damn. You guys did great with this one. Content AND quality!
One of the things I love about RCR is the little bits of feeling poking through the humor, capturing the subject vehicle's place in history and the lives of the people who drove or still drive them. In this, that feeling was like a stadium light. Cars are art. Cars are wheeled capsules of memories, sometimes so much so that they stop being a car and start being a character. It's why some people seek out cars that, out of the context of their era, are completely undesirable and all but forgotten.
    Well done!

Yeah. Somehow seems antithetical to the whole idea of living a "free and easy" hippie lifestyle. It seems the Westfalia is only a facade being used to appear different and wearing the skin of the 60's kids as you're literally paying 20 grand to look poor. Meh.
      It's all a little depressing.

I'll be honest - this video cut deep. I've never had that romantic connection with my parents, especially my father, who although is a car guy has a very different taste than me and we rarely share our thoughts when it comes to cars or motorcycles for that matter. The fact that your own parent doesn't at least notice that you're trying to improve yourself when it comes to your hobby - hurts, it hurts alot. Some days more than others but it's an ever lasting numb pain that you learn to live with.
This video underlines the fact that cars are more than just objects that take you from A to B, they're rolling art. This just made my day just a little bit better. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Cars are, in a very real way, a means both of transportation and, for some, a means of expression. The important thing is to understand that one's appreciation for cars, much like for more traditional forms of art, is invariably subjective. Everyone has their own values regarding the aesthetic they prefer, and the best thing to do is acknowledge that your preferences may not align, but to want to know what it is that the other party values and appreciates about the things they like. That is the best way to appreciate art. Not focusing solely on the things that make an innate sort of sense to you because its aesthetic aligns with your preferences, but to learn how to appreciate the other because you know why people like it.

I grew up going on vacation on one of these many times a year. It feels like in my country everybody swapped the engines with subaru ones. Never seemed to overheat and could easily hit 100kph pretty fast. I think we went as fast as 130+ kph and the car is not designed to go that fast. Everything inside starts to shake and rattle. You take a modern car to 160 kph and nothing happens. You take this to similar speeds it's like you're in an action movie rocketing down to a planet with a space station breaking up all around you.
This is the pinnacle of what a car can be for me. The least amount of space for the max amount of comfort. You could sleep 6 people in one of these if you wanted. All for the exact same parking space real estate of a Honda Odyssey. They can't be beat.

This is the deepest thing i've seen since Bojack season 6. Literally a tear jerker. It's a shame we keep finding ourselves repeating history with our own children, being distant, not understanding, always short and busy. You and your parents are a little older than me and mine. I didn't grow up with station wagons and Westphalia vans, just pickup trucks. So we gave in to our own personal nostalgia and bought the same model truck that my dad had. We take our kids fishing and hunting in the same spots trying to relive dead history, trying to get the good times back. To all of you who are making the same mistakes as us, stop living in the past it's gone. Your kids are here now and they won't be kids for long.
