My kids grew up with Previa supercharger from infant to teenagers. Never ever got stranded with it. We drove through mountains, farmlands and taken through ferries. It is super reliable that maintenance on hardly cost anything much. It is now 300,000 plus miles on the same engine and transmission. A lot of room including groceries, furniture and even home depot lumber. Most reliable vehicle I’ve own that cost so little to maintain.
Ragingmaja literally saw a Previa and a Ferrari driving next to each other today, and I told my friend while we were driving that I'd choose the Previa over the Ferrari any day 👍🏼
The Previa has an extra 1000lb on the Honda Fit, so the performance will be, well, not particularly good. Not too much of a detriment if you don't drive like a madman, but it does mean that you will sometimes find yourself lacking power to get out of your own way.
Yet it still hauls a ton of stuff (literally) and a towing capacity is 3500lbs. And I have towed that much, from Denver to Laramie (over 2000ft elevation gain). I've spent $2500 in repairs on my '91 over 17 years ownership, and it has never broken down. I am the second owner and we both beat the crap out of it (work van). It has 319k and will serve me up another 150k, if I don't get sick of it first and sell it to a vanlife doper in Boulder. 😆 It is boring. It takes 4 minutes to reach interstate speeds. The steering is vague and the cabin noise severe. It has good traction but lousy clearance. On a sunny day, all that glass turns it into an Air Fryer. The AC used R12, so you can't recharge it. The flex coupling behind those lovely headers breaks every 7 years. Rear main seals drip on all of them. But it is cheap to own, utterly reliable, fits a stunning amount of cargo, and you can put 12 sheets of 3/4" plywood in the back, between the wheel wells, and 12' sticks of lumber up against the windshield *and the back hatch will close.*
Yep. A friend of mine had an ‘85 Plymouth Caravelle. 318 one barrel I think huffing 140 hp through a three speed slush box and open diff. 0-60 was ‘yes’.
I loved in the early to mid 90s every car company was trying to “out round” each other. This was almost the winner, however I think the 1996 Ford Taurus won the final victory as even the digital clock on the dash is a swoop.
My friend has one of those, and I shit you not, one time he picked up a friend who started giggling like a schoolgirl. When he asked him why, his friend responded “Everything’s an oval!”
We had a '91 LE AWD in dark blue. Had it for 300,000 miles and it may be still out there. The mid engine was never a problem as it never failed. ZERO trouble. Fold up seats were great. Take out the middle row and you could put a full sheet of plywood in there. We towed a 2500 pound fully loaded popup camper from Northeast Ohio to Virginia Beach for summer vacatons with five people in the car. Easily did highway speeds bogging down at times on steep inclines.(no supercharger). It handled well in snow. The long moon roof was great on hot summer days. Open it up and whoosh all the hot air instantly evacuated out of the car. It was a great car for our family. Well done Toyota.
I wanna own a previa SPECIFICALLY for putting that Rain-X cleaner on the windshield, then drive in the rain and watch as the rain beads off that sloped windshield. oml.
I convinced my little brother to climb the front windshield of our parents Previa when we were kids. He slipped and slid his chin down it, busting it wide open. Blood beads on it well too.
I had one between 2008 and 2011... bought it with 273000 miles on it and drove it until 342000 .... replaced normal wear items (Brakes, Shocks/Struts,Tires) .... It wasn't that quick (slow acceleration), but it was fast (set the cruise at 105 if you want).... it did do one thing that other minivans couldn't do... it could haul 11' long lumber (or other long narrow things) between the seats all the way up under the dash. The A/C had a leak that I never fixed and it needed its valves adjusted in order to pass emissions , so I finally got rid of it... later contacted the buyer to find out that the thing was still running at 408000 miles .... the oil reservoir under the hood was unique in that it only used that oil if the engine was low, kinda like a coolant reservoir works on most cars ... I think that plays into why these ButterBean vans run forever. Oh yeah, it was very balanced with the engine so far behind the front wheels, the weight was almost perfectly balanced front to rear. ... and another thing, the visibility... you could see 200 degrees around the driver with out much blocking your view. One of the reasons it was canceled in the US was the crash test ratings... that prime visibility came at a cost of passenger compartment collapse in frontal accidents due to those thin A pillars.
Mine has 308K on it and still runs like a beast. Had it from FL to New England sooooo many times. This is my 3rd one, never having been sold due to irreparable issues, just didn't need a van anymore. LOVE IT!
I LOVED my old Previa! Bought as a work vehicle (Courier) from a friend for 300 bucks about 10 years ago. I drive 100k miles a year and that Van was Tough as hell!! And yeah, that RWD Low-mounted Rear engine, Van was a F***'N Blast on dirt/gravel/dirt road! (and this was a Non-supercharged model) Up and down the Appalachian Mtns., or to the Coast and back, In the middle of the night, 5 nights a week. That was easily the most Profitable vehicle I Ever purchased. Great car!!!
Yup! Same here. Mine was AWD, I could drive through snow on bald front tires and still could go anywhere. Mr. Regular really, really missed this part. I towed sooooo much garbage with mine, and it was always loaded with renovation tools and supplies to boot. So long as the starter worked the thing ran like clockwork.
Yeah, same. Had 2 of them in a row. Bought for cheap, fun enough off road, even used it as a mini moving van for folks, took it to burning man twice. Put over 100,000 on each. Engines smoked a bit but a differential leak killed my last one. The plastic in the door clips is getting brittle though, had such a pain with handles, locks breaking.
Starter famous for this quirk. On a slushy 35 degree day, van starts fine, drive into town, turn off, run errand, turn key ... nada. No click, nothing. Grab tire iron, roll under driver side, three light taps on the starter housing ... starts right up and is good for the rest of your day. I called it my anti-theft device.😄
I owned a loaded out 1992. Had all the options including the front refrigerator compartment, and a enormous rear sunroof that retracted, along with one that was over the drivers head that only flipped up. The trick was always having to explain how to change the oil from under the drivers seat. It was a great van, btw. I wish I hadn’t sold it. It could fit so much in the back. Drywall, 2x4s, you name it. Call it whatever you’d like but from my point of view, it couldn’t be beat. I only used 89 octane fuel and never had a problem, BTW. My only complaint was that the front cup holder below the radio never completely retracted (a problem that was shared by all of them).
I had the sc one as a summer partybus years back and even when fully loaded with bass, beer and bois everyone was suprised how quickly it accelerated. And it was wonderful to drive!
I definitely would, though I would probably have replaced the stock radio by now, along with the speakers for something a bit more modern. Everything else is fine as it is.
@@mndlessdrwer i have one right now and the speakers are actually pretty good i just got one of those bluetooth plug in things and it works perfectly! U should only replace them if they are broke or your trying to blast the fuck at of them
This somehow accurate, as a person who visit to Australia often. If only five of us, my dad always rent a Toyota Camry. But if grandma follows us, my dad either picked Toyota Tarago, Kia Carnival or Hyundai iMax.
I had a 1993 All-trac that I loved to drive, especially in snow. It had an awd system similar to Subaru and was actually better in snow than my Tacoma. Yes it was underpowered but actually drove very nice, almost car like. Handed that van down to all 4 of my kids and they actually loved it. My last daughter took it to college for four years and was thrilled with it during the winter when everyone else got stuck and she just passed them by. Engines and transmissions were rock solid but other parts not so much. got too expensive to maintain otherwise would have hung on to that van.
Yep. 454 LSX. I didn't check the full build, but they didn't so much "swap", as "rip out everything including the front firewall". There does seem to be a fetish for seeing what sort of Lexus engine you can shoehorn in.
Drove a JDM Previa camper van around Albert Park once (and >2000km around Australia in general). That thing had more than 500.000 km on the counter and was still running amazingly well!
Mr Regular can bash it all he wants, and all the criticism can be valid, but I don't care. I love this van, always have, and it even has headlights like a Zenki S14.
I've loved the looks of the Previa since it was new. It looked like nothing else before or since, but in a clever way. Now, with it easy to get 300 hp out of a four you could make a van in that configuration that would hustle, but the poor Previa was ahead of its time.
It wasn't that bad to work on for minor stuff. Removing the front passenger seat to change the spark plug wires was a bit of a pain, but it really didn't take that long. Head gasket was a pain, but..
My family rented a Tarago when we visited, but it was one of the later, FWD ones. This was in the summer of 2006, so it was either a second gen or a very early third gen.
The 180 degree captains chairs were awesome on road trips or van parties. The exhaust was really nice; Nearly straight piped with a slight bend over the rear axel. The supercharged trim was worth it, but thirsty. One of the best vehicles a kid could own.
I had to drive one of these every day to community college in Kansas in the mid 2000s. My parents initially had a late eighties dodge caravan, and then "upgraded" to this RWD 5spd flying birth control on wheels...It was the weirdest Minivan to daily. I parked over a block away so no one would see me in it lol.
This was an Asian market vehicle brought to the US. Most of those didn't do that well. That's why later on it was replaced with the sienna. Which we still have today. Four-wheel-drive supercharge versions of the vehicle you have were very popular up in Colorado where they have high altitude and snow. Remember the original Honda Odyssey? Basically a station wagon version of the accord. That vehicle and your Toyota were placeholders until a dedicated version for North America could be developed.
For cars, access appears weird. For people that own a motorcycle, it is natural. You gotta peel off panels to get at the good stuff. Add 15 minutes to each job?
"There's nothing this will do that a Dodge Caravan won't." How's the Previa's transmission holding up? Our caravan went through three transmissions in 4 years, then the head gasket blew.
Also, how about taking 4X8 plywood sheets in the back? Huh? How about that? Or how about towing 3500 lbs... or driving like a mid engine car because the center of gravity is as low as one? Also, the engine has a large cover over it that unbolts if you have to do any major surgery. Never had a problem with the power even when towing 3500 lbs. Best work van I have ever owned. Bad Review. Bad!
I’m happy to see many appreciate this van. It’s that 90’s nostalgia of weird and creativeness that we don’t see anymore. Why slap an under-powered engine right smack in the middle of not a car, but a heavy chassised Van? Because F@$k it, we’re gonna find out what happens. The headlights are low, and profiled to see every crack on that desperately under-maintained road. The windshield, wide and welcoming, to experience the open road and all the joys that come with it. The seats can ROTATE. Because when you haul friends and family, the driving experience is half the fun, until you can turn right around, and face to face every other passenger in the vehicle. The windows are huge to accommodate every wanderlust daydream the passengers have. The Toyota Previa is the pinnacle of Van engineering. Not because it was engineered to be mechanically superior, but because it was engineered to and for the human soul. And it’s undying and desperate need, to be forever Free.
We had one of these when I was a kid. I don’t care what anyone says... this thing was awesome. It did this cool thing where it almost exploded every time you turned on the AC 😂 And I have a lot of memories of my brother picking me up from school listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers. There were so many road trips and It may have been a piece of crap but it was a memorable piece of crap.
You can never really put a price on the fond memories made in cars like these. But if you really had to try, the current going rate is about $4k for a clapped out one or $7k for one that's in decent condition. Honestly, if all you want is to drive you and six other people around while reliving some great times, I don't think that's a bad price to pay.
My parents bought a used 96 Tarago back in 98. They still have it 22 years later. In that time all it needed apart from normal things was a replacement rear muffler, cat and a starter motor, also the paint is shot and the AC likes to make a racket. I honestly love that big old egg. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not and it just keeps on going.
I’ve always liked these things, they’re so weird and egg-ey. And Lord do I love eggs. I’d much rather have these be on the road than the endless sea of angry-looking crossover suvs deluded with their purpose which has now become the status quo Also, first gen sienna is best sienna
I would love one of these as my commuter and parts pickup car, use it for exactly as Toyota called it. A multi purpose vehicle, take the family out, goto work, pick up parts for the project, and for its real purpose in life...groceries
I drove one in college. I once took it to school and back (42 miles) with no brakes (neutral and reverse for quick stops). I was driving it when the odometer rolled at 200,000 miles. I really miss my old white jellybean
Taught a friend to drive stick in one of these. It was almost impossible to stall. I swear you could bring the engine to full stop, wait 2 seconds, push in the clutch, and it would just suddenly burst back to life. That with the high visibility made it a great learner vehicle.
One of the most reliable cars ever, weird engine position for sure, I learned how to drive in this car and it was amazing, good visibility and ran smooth. Only problem was that passengers would complain about the loud engine. Got called an egg a lot too lol.
I see quite a lot around in my area. They come in 2 ways: totally clapped out and blowing smoke with a shit ton of rust and dents driven by poor briars or they are immaculate and driven by old people.
The official car of the oldest bike shop in town. The owner of that shop drives this thing daily, and also uses it as the "service vehicle" for cycling events locally. It's great.
I witnessed one of these take off like a rocket ship and all he had to do was a cheap mod to the supercharger. You don't expect a vehicle that looks like an egg from space squat back and leave sports cars in the dust. It looked even more hilarious than it sounds !
I think this is way cooler per dollar than modern cars. If kei vans were safe and comfortable I'd never own a different type of car. Now obviously this is a different type of vehicle, but it is still quite cool.
I think the Previa is the culmination of all the personality about late 80's to late 90's cars I love so much. Never again will we have cars like these.
It's a very very old callback to classic RCR pre-face reveal, when I would draw a face on my notebook and hold it up to avoid being spotted on-camera! I have no idea why I decided to do it here.
I LOVE the PREVIA!! I had 6 stick shift Previas that I had to travel to multiple states to acquire....I have2 left and I would NEVER EVER let them go!!! You can EASILY fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the van with ease. Best camp and work vehicles in my life!!! I do burn outs, I can't believe how reliable this van is. It's FKKN AMAZING...

A lot of room including groceries, furniture and even home depot lumber. Most reliable vehicle I’ve own that cost so little to maintain.
I get more excited when I see one of these than I do for most exotics.
bro, it is exotics, mid-engine, rwd, brown, its a sports car!
Ragingmaja literally saw a Previa and a Ferrari driving next to each other today, and I told my friend while we were driving that I'd choose the Previa over the Ferrari any day 👍🏼

That van makes as much power as a Hinda Fit, lol. That puts the power-weight ratio in perspective.
It is boring.

I wanna own a previa SPECIFICALLY for putting that Rain-X cleaner on the windshield, then drive in the rain and watch as the rain beads off that sloped windshield. oml.

I noticed it at 5:45 too.
It took me until 06:58 to notice.
Supplemental Accessory Drive System. Sads. Basically how I feel when I have to work on mine. But what a good space egg she’s been.
How long did it last you?
Yup!
Honestly regretting not getting another. The flat floor in the back was so incredibly nice for camping / loading stuff.
Same!
I bet you the guy that owns and drives this every day, loves it.

I wonder if Mr. Regular's prediction even applies here. That eventually all cars, including this van, will get LS swapped.
But the hi ace became a r35 swap platform... for whatever reason

The 180 degree captains chairs were awesome on road trips or van parties. The exhaust was really nice; Nearly straight piped with a slight bend over the rear axel. The supercharged trim was worth it, but thirsty. One of the best vehicles a kid could own.

We had one for 16 years. Best car we ever had.
The Tarago was official vehicle of every touring band in 0z in the 90's.
I had one when my kids were little. Was fantastic, never broke down, wasn’t expensive to run and could carry almost anything.
My brother owned *TWO* of these. His comment: "Too expensive to have work done on it, cos the motor is almost totally inaccessible" .

How's the Previa's transmission holding up? Our caravan went through three transmissions in 4 years, then the head gasket blew.

Also, how about taking 4X8 plywood sheets in the back? Huh? How about that? Or how about towing 3500 lbs... or driving like a mid engine car because the center of gravity is as low as one? Also, the engine has a large cover over it that unbolts if you have to do any major surgery. Never had a problem with the power even when towing 3500 lbs. Best work van I have ever owned. Bad Review. Bad!
What are you doing to that poor transmission? The 3 speed auto in my 93 has been rebuilt once and had one filter replaced, in 175k miles.
The Previa is beautiful in an ugly way.
