    If you "marry up" you should be aware that it's not all "paying off your debts" or "buying the best appliances". there will be frustrating times when you feel like everyone got a secret memo that you didn't- you wear slightly the wrong outfit or use the wrong terminology that makes it clear you are an outsider. And while people might always be polite to you (after all rudeness is so declasse) they might not ever be friendly or make you feel included. Plus they will generally make you sign a prenup.

    My fiancé comes from a wealthy family who have run their business for several generations. The first thing I noticed is that in these circles where people give each other houses and apartments like other people give flowers from the supermarket, no one says they are wealthy, let alone old-money. Even when they know it is, they say they are hard-working middle class people. Money is never talked about, but expensive things are paid for: our apartment was paid for and next year our wedding with the whole family. In general, money or prizes are never talked about - they are given away and thanked. It was difficult for me at first to fit into these circles where it is normal to send your child to private school, chess and tennis. After more than 6 years of relationship, I have adapted so that I am now sometimes a stranger to my own family, as they often do not understand the conventions of the other family.

    My best friend married into Dutch aristocracy. She had no idea he was from a wealthy family because they met in NYC. She was shocked when her husband told her he would need to break the news of their engagement on a solo visit to his family to ensure they would accept her.
    They accepted her, but were emotionally distant. Shortly after she was married and thei their first child was born, her husband was given a trust that would go to their son upon adulthood. To this day, she has no idea how much the family is worth. They never speak of their money.
    In NYC, she and he worked normal jobs, but when the moved to the Netherlands they both stopped working and focused on family life. They live in one of the family homes in Amsterdam.
    They go to family homes in Italy, Greece, Belgium, France...and send the children to private school.
    She had to learn how to behave in certain circles in order to not be seen as a disruption.
    Her husband Aub is so nice that it makes up for the awkwardness of being a part of his family, so she smiles and deals with it. She says everyone is very polite.

    I haven't had the opportunity of interacting with old money, but I admire their ability to make connections. Middle class socialization sometimes gets in the way for the rest of us. Social value/status comes from consumption: car, house, vacations etc. Type of job: white collar vs blue collar vs service jobs. We tend to be slaves to people's opinion of us: do we look poor, do we give the right impression, do people like us, do we have enough stuff that secures our middle class status. After all of that, there really is not much room left for other pursuits like high culture, certain types of sports, making connections with the right people. We're just caught in a trap. We're also used to doing everything ourselves, some of us feel embarrassed if we have to hire help. No wonder it's hard for people to ascend from the class they were born in. Many times it's not money, it's the mental changes we need to make that's in our way.

      My ancestors were knights in what would later become Spain during the 10th century. My lineage is older than every upper class family here in the United States. No castles, no shiny armor, and we weren't super wealthy for the past 1300 years.

    • @feonasmith9226
      @feonasmith9226 Год назад +3

      @@christian5327 That's interesting. I'm no expert, but I believe the convention among that group is that even though you can trace you ancestry that far back, there needs to have been substantial money in the family from generations ago. Happily, things are changing. It appears that if you get rich enough and follow the social rules, you can make it to the lower rungs of the upper class and be kind of accepted-ish. That's what seems to be happening in the UK anyway, as some of the older families begin to fall into 'genteel poverty'. You'll never be truly fully accepted, but your children might be if they go to the right schools and make the right friends. So there is hope for those who wish they could become part of the group one day. 🙂

    • @whatevergoesforme5129
      @whatevergoesforme5129 Год назад +11

      Hmm, don't be misled by their grace and proper attitude. The old rich have their standards and they do assess people based on their educational background, social status, wealth, and sphere of influence. They just don't show what they truly think and feel towards those people lower in rank/status. I know this because I used to work in an NGO where we needed to hobnob with the old rich, new rich, and famous. Old rich folks are subtle and gracious that you don't feel they look down on you LOL.

They will soon enough not have a choice but to accept some new money into their network. If one is self confident and don't need their validation, then some people's snobbishness is tolerable, if getting into the group is what one desires.

      Actually, capitalist economies are systemically stratified societies in which the notion of economic and social mobility are largely a myth. Due to the fact that capitalism involves a perpetual upward transfer and consolidation of wealth, all capitalist systems turn into authoritarian or totalitarian dictatorships eventually. It takes a lot more than changing your mindset if you want to be in the top .01%. You have to be willing and have the resources to buy politicians, influence policies, exploit labor, and exploit resources. After all, that's the only way to become a billionaire.

    Both my grand parents on my mother's side came from old money. There are streets named after my ancestors in Montreal near the Olympic Stadium. All that wealth was gone within a generation. My grandfather squandered and gambled it all away. His money, my grandmother's money, everything of value (furniture, jewelry, silverware, gilded gold plates, art, houses), all sold and pawned. He even took my mother's trust fund (and my aunt's). Perhaps his siblings are still old money, I don't know, because he was cut off from the family. It's really quite amazing how fleeting it is if you're not careful (even those born into it). Thankfully, my mother learned from HIS mistakes, and we ended up OK.

    When money is viewed as multigenerational capital rather than one’s own, a whole new set of rules for spending emerge. Buying an expensive antique or piece of art is encouraged, but buying an expensive consumable like Starbucks each day is wasteful and discouraged. Even though that $8 coffee may seem irrelevant, it shows a lack of commitment and understanding of how money should be invested not spent.

    Old money in England might be different from the US.English old money are often struggling with the cost of running and maintaining their estates, their furniture and appliances have often seen better days. They most likely don't have the number of staff that they had back in the day.

      I was a staff member for a few old money families. They are always perfectly mannered upon meeting but they are also taking your measure. They were particularly cheap with pay and high with expectations of service. One example is that I had a business mailer for new clients. This old money family clipped it to my decreased check without any discussion. This was their way of saying they would pay less if I grew my income from employment elsewhere. They expected my time to be spent on them alone. You do become an accessory to their surroundings as they do not know you, but you learn about them. Spouses never slept in the same room as they had their own wings on the estate. Their little dogs could urinate and defecate without qualm, but items had to be perfectly placed without dust bunny seen. Certain items were to never be touched and hallways of rooms were to be avoided. What I have found to be true in working between the different classes is that if you make a mistake or something needs addressed, new money can scream while old money whispers.

    Almost every gesture is conditional. They want to gage how you manage money that would seem like several months salary in "regular" life. They might have 'surveillance' on said emergency credit card. They want to see how you treat THEIR money. They want to establish a sense of appreciative loyalty from you as well. They'd rather materially raise you up if you're going to marry into their family. This isn't bad in and of itself, it's just gaging how trustworthy, predictable and reliable you are with shared resources.

    Am totally laughing at the kitchen appliance analogy because that is just what happened. A few months ago. The 30 year old freezer went out and a new top of the line one because it was the best was put in its place. Plus a year ago. The same with the refrigerator.

    • @shepardsmith3235
      @shepardsmith3235 Год назад

      I got bad news for you. Just because you put in a top of the line appliance does not mean that it will last any longer than the inexpensive one. If you look at the fine print in Consumer Reports it will tell you that the average life expectancy of a major consumer appliance like a fridge is now FIVE YEARS. Think on that. So dont be impressed with people that have money. Do they have brains and common sense and you would be surprised that this is not a function of class. Sorry about that. I have learned a lot from my older son. He is an extremely successful entrepreneur. He stared two very successful businesses and the odds against doing this are extremely miniscule. He networks like crazy with people like himself. Not one of them. Not one of them came from Money. They were all raised solidly middle class with a strong work ethic. Brains and vision and dead hungry to succeed. Few of them went to Old Money schools like Harvard or Vanderbilt or Yale. So if you pursue the trappings of success you will be disappointed and you will meet a lot of people that are disappointing too. The image is not the reality. PS The money, for the most part, goes after about five generations. Many books have been written by the Vanderbilts and how it was lost. Just my two cents. No flames please.

      Never give anyone but your lawyers power of attorney, and that includes your bankers. If they don't have control over your bank accounts and property, you're much better protected. Your financial advisor should be overseen by your lawyers. Your lawyers will be top-notch, from a top-notch old law firm. Even then, pay attention and don't let years go by without checking on your affairs.
      Never, ever cheap out on financial or legal help. Many high-profile cases of an investment advisor ripping off a "client" was a relative or friend. Lauren Hutton, Doris Day, Billy Joel, LeAnn Rimes, Anne Hathaway, and many others.

She should step back and let him take the limelight as he may get tired of her.. then she really then should be worried. Without him, she's just known for the actress of a part of a show. There will never be another young Harry..coming her way anytime soon, just saying.

    • @lameesahmad9166
      @lameesahmad9166 Год назад

      Meghan is a dark character. She is only the face of more powerful political associates who are doing their best to prevent the freedom of the press and to dictate what information should be allowed to be published on social media. If they can dictate what people are allowed to see and what they are allowed to say they will be able to control global propaganda and influence people globally to accept their mindset for their own powerful ambitions. The fact that the general worlds population is getting bored and tired of Meghan is a scary thing for thus sociopathic and malignant narcissistic woman. You could see the discomfort and fear when she was an honoured guest at the Kevin Costner Gala.
      Make no mistake she and her associates are evil and promoting her is only a tiny part of their overall plan. Why do you think she was promoting Nigeria? Do you know that her mother was jailed a significant 10 years on drug related charges? How do you think they can afford her and Harry's drug use? Why do you think her physical appearance and condition is deteriorating? Why do you think she and Harry are desperate to make money? Are her children real? If so how does a 40 year old woman successfully carry two children to term with no physical problems? Do you know that the possibility that Harry is not the son of King Charles and that he only Carrie's his Duke title because of his position of accession to the throne?
      On the other hand Prince William is showing the world the decorum, actions and taste of old money in a very dignified way. Do you know how old clothes that have been worn by royalty and even the significant pieces of old jewelry are updated and redesigned into mire appropriate styles for the individuals taste and presentation.
      In the event of the Death of King Charles and the accession of Prince William to the throne and the granting of the title of Prince of Wales to Prince George there is a possibility that the title of Duke of Sussex will be stripped away from Harry and this title will be bestowed on another member of the royal family.
      I have heard that there is the distinct possibility that the FBI, CIA, MI5, MI6 and other security agencies are following Meghan and Harry"s entourage and watching them closely. Dark couple indeed. Much darker than bronzing spray.

In other words what’s your family history meaning were your family important and where did they make their wealth. If you can’t contribute to the standing of the wealthy you must have something else,talent,good education etc to appeal to them. It must have been difficult for a person like Meghan Markle to fit into the royal family for she had neither to offer. Her marriage to Harry wouldn’t have lasted if she had remained in England. I grew up in a poor immigrant family from Cuba. I have always had the mindset of old money, dress for stealth and never speak about money; it's considered vulgar. When I was in Junior High School, in the NYC public school system. My guidance counselor asked me what ambitions I had. I replied, "I am going to conquer the world." She asked me, "And how are you going to do that ?" I answered logically, "The problem with Hitler, Napoleon and Alexander the Great. They made too much noise, and brought too much attention to themselves. I am planning on doing it quietly." She asked me again, "And how are you going to do that ?" Me, "I don't know yet, I'll figure it out." A week later, I was thinking about having several sons when I marry. Sending them out into the world, becoming financiers. Sending them to NYC, London, Paris, Munich, Milan. For the past year, I have been learning about the Rothschild family, and how they developed their generational wealth. It scared me, because when I was 12/13 years-old in Junior High School. I had the same strategy, and I knew nothing about the Rothschild family. I don't know if I am a reincarnation of Mayer Rothschild, or just a fluke. Let's see what my financial intellect will dictate, what will my financial future be ? Hmm...🤔.
