Do me a favor and give the video a thumbs up if you haven’t yet! Any questions I missed on the machines, just ask!
👍👍😊
Price? I watched your video all the way through expecting to hear what they cost. Why do an extensive review and not mention the price for these machines? Or did I miss something? I didn't want to have to go into the manufacturer's website but I guess I will.
@@lesliehampton5458 because prices change, there’s sales, etc. I don’t see the point in stating a price in a permanent video that can’t be unsaid. They’ve already gone up in price quite a bit since I bought them.
I had this planer for one month and a sprocket broke on the planer while doing routine tasks on hard maple. After 2 months of dealing with Laguna customer service, my shop is down because my brand new planer is in pieces waiting for a part. Mind you it is a part that is in the planer in 3-4 places so its not like its a rare entity for this machine. Just a cautionary tale. I liked it when it was working
Oh wow that stinks! New part on the way and just taking a while, or not having good communication with them?
@@JohnBuildsIt Still waiting 3 months later on parts for a brand new planer. They basically just sent me the policy and sadi deal with it. I will never buy another laguna tool. I was happy with the initial quality but I had heard of their poor customer service and well...here it is. They should take a planer apart and sent the parts or send a new one. Literally cannot believe this company is this bad.
Helical heads are magic, finish is so smooth and the cut so quiet!👍🏻
Yessir! 🙌🏼
Thanks for reviewing these! I have been interested in them as well.
Awesome, thanks for watching!
Very nice, happy for you. That clear top is cool so you can see the chips moving.
Yep I love that feature!
Congrats on the new machines!
I appreciate it man!
Man you have come so far, great job brother!!!
Thanks! 👊🏼
Thanks for sharing, very impressive machines. Looking forward to seeing what you build with them.
Thanks for watching!!
I make certain to watch your latest content and always take something from it to use in my shop..I wish my meager business could justify these type of upgrades, however I'm glad your success has reached this height..dig your honesty and straight forward presentation..I noticed the shop vac/dust buddy rig in the corner which I copied and still use 3 years later..Thanks for sharing and good fortune to you!
Thanks Mark I appreciate it!
Hell yeah, dude!
Congrats on the new machinery. Shop is looking legitimate.
Thanks man. Getting there!
Great video! Definitely will look at these machines!
Thanks for watching!!
Thank you for sharing your use of your machines with us; Solidifies my decision to purchase a jointer like what you own. Great video as well!
Thanks for watching!
Those look amazing!!
Really are!
Awesome set up there fella and great review.
Thanks for watching! 👊🏼
Excellent review on both machines.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!!
Great Video, you have a sweet shop!
Thanks man, slowly but surely!
Awesome video 👊🏻
👊🏼👊🏼
Great video thanks
Thanks for watching!
I really like the new rollers on the planners
Me too!
Nice machines. Keep their value. Well worth the investment over time.
You know it!
I appreciate your review and
love of woodworking,
been looking for a planer like this!
I have two older Hitachi f 1000 that are very accurate...too loud !!
I am excited , cool machine
Actually .you got me on the jointer
nice machine.
Thanks bro!
Thanks for watching!!
Trying to decide on a planer. Hammer, Laguna or Oliver. Thanks for the video.......
Nice review !!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for review/experience video!
I'd say rollers are better, considering you can push them back in giving you space back where the others will stick out that much further. My only concern would be to adjust rollers from pulling rollers in/out all the time. Thanks again!
Yep I meant to mention that about the space savings as well! I agree!
Amazing machines, I think I like the idea of the rollers on the planer, but ultimately as long as you don't get snipe, it wouldn't bother me either way. Thanks for the review/update and congrats on getting these.
That’s my thinking! Less weight and space with these as well
@@JohnBuildsIt guess i need to start saving up... Laguna seems to be stepping up these last few years. Making some great machines
Very nice!
🙌🏼🙌🏼
Geez I cannot believe i never thought usin my digital level for setup. Congrats on the new machines
Makes it easy that’s for sure!
😊👍
Dayum, super nice machines. Congrats on the addition! The things those machines will do to some dirty, curvey or rough boards would require blurring if shared on RUclips.
😂👊🏼
Thank you for the video. You could NOT have picked better woodworking equipment than Laguna. They are very very accurate and well made. Your children and grand children will use these tools.
I wouldn’t doubt it!
Yeah... lol, no.
Good machines though.
I've been considering the same jointer. Now I'm jealous. Perhaps after some use you could provide an experience video also. Congrats and enjoy!
I’ve had it over 3 months now and tons of use, this was my experience video with it! Haha any questions on something I missed just let me know!
Laguna nice brand and better than many, it costed you much money but I see you can pay it back, cheers.
Thank you for posting this video. Do the jointer's casters rotate? Like, could you pull it straight out from against a wall?
No they don’t, you’d need a different mobile base
What kind of receptacle did you use?
Can you give us an update on the performance of the jointer? There is a more current review/comments that indicate problems with the tables and fence not holding their settings. Several people stated they actually had to return their jointer to Laguna. Thanks.
I literally haven’t touched mine since I set it up initially. Still dead on
Since you are happy with the planner and jointer, will you be getting their table saw next?
I have heard good things about them. But most likely going to swing for a Sawstop, go figure lol
John, Does the serrated infeed roller leave marks? Video is very helpful.
No, comes out perfectly smooth!
Hey, thanks for the great overview of these tools. I have been eyeing the JX8 and looking to store it under a workbench when not in use (small shop and can't keep it out full-time). I have been trying to figure out the max height clearance this would need to live under the bench. Looking at the manual and website it says, 26-1/2" approximate but looking at the photos and in your video i am wondering if the knob/handle on the top of the fence is accounted in that max height. Is there any way you could verify this height for me? Thanks so much and keep making the great content, I have so many great ideas from your stuff!
Mine is sitting at 38.5” to the top of that ball. It’d be 35.5” with that off
@@JohnBuildsIt thanks so much for going out of your way to answer this. Really appreciate it. Have a great day.
Aside from the paint, controls and the indeed rollers this jointer looks identical to the Grizzley G0858. Any idea if Laguna and Grizzly are related?
No they’re not. And they look pretty different to me though haha 🤷🏻♂️
hey John, i hope you doing well, have not see much update on your channel (assume you busy with the new baby), i recall you made a video for an air filter system from AC blower, but i could not find it any more, do you removed it? thanks
Yea a huge thing I’ve learned about kids is that they get sick.. a lot haha, been a rough winter! But no I’ve not made a video about that, must be thinking of someone else!
Re. the jointer, did you get the ShearTec or QuadTec cutterhead? I'm not having much luck finding a review that compares the two different types.
Sheartec. 100% worth the extra cost
Those machines are incredible, congrats man. May I have your Ridgid jointer? 😊
Haha already sold it! For more than I paid 3 years ago too, prices these days are crazy!
@@JohnBuildsIt I bet! You aren't kidding man. Don't think you'll miss it too much, lol! I just looked at the price of the Laguna lunch box style planer. Actually a great value. Compared to buying my Ridgid planer plus helical cutter heads separately. I'm definitely gonna think about that
Hey john! I am getting some snipe on the tail end of the board on my planer. (The last part of the board to go through). Any thoughts on how to get rid of that ? (Note: The lead end is getting zero snipe)
That’s interesting! I’m really not sure. Usually it’s the front and not the back haha. All the adjustments you can make are in the owners manual though
Assume you were forced to get rid of one tomorrow, which would you keep and which would you let go?
You can make sleds for jointing on a planer, so I’d say a planer is more important!
Hi John great video. I went and purchased the same jointer and thicknesser. I have the jointer dialled in sweet but can’t get rid of snipe from the planer. Is there any advice or pointers you can give me?
How was the setup with the jointer? Were the in and out tables to spec? Were you able to get good results right out of the box with no adjustments?
Just setting and squaring up the fence is about all there was to it. Everything else checked out and was ready to go as is
@@JohnBuildsIt ok, cool. There is another reviewer of this model that had a bear of a time setting his up. I want to get an 8 inch or more jointer, but they all seem to have some bad setup stories associated with them regardless of the brand.
@@MixingGBPpowermatic too? Im looking att their 8" with parallelogram tables but its almost twice the jx8;
@@jdr03272 not sure about powermatic, but it would good to check it out beforehand if at all possible.
Are you still liking the planer? I am stuck between buying the Powermatic 209hh and this one, which weighs about 400 lbs less than the Powermatic.
Absolutely man. You can’t go wrong with either one
Awesome. Your video definitely made me lean towards the laguna so i will most likely be going that route. I also am getting the jointer but there is some front to back play with the fence. Does your fence move easily even when locked or is something messed up with the one I am looking at?
@@adamwhitehead5386 no I haven’t had any issues like that with mine, jointer has been amazing too!
I ordered my JX8 in July and got it in October. Unfortunately I was in an auto accident and still have limited use of my right hand so it still sits in my garage. At 500lbs, it's a bit of work to get into the basement. It would have been nice to see the unboxing, like you did on the PX16. The JX8 has to be very top heavy and I would have liked to see better shots so I know better how to handle it. Thanks for the review. It was useful.
It was basically crated just like the planer. But you’re right, a jointer is super awkward to move due to its shape. Going downstairs does not sound fun at all. We got it unloaded out of my truck with just 2 of us but I’d definitely recommend a couple more helpers
It's a walk-out basement but the entrance is in the back of the house and down the floor, with really rough ground between. I generally work alone so I need both hands. I've moved a Revo 18/36 lathe and 18BX bandsaw myself so I know how to move heavy stuff. The bandsaw came on its back and the lathe came in several pieces, packed like an Ikea bookshelf. The top-heavy jointer may cause problems. Thanks for the video.
Great way to spend $10K. Gonna have to save up to get me a set
Not quite that much haha. They have gone up quite a bit even since I got them though
I just got a JX/8 ShearTec II yesterday. Were your tables in proper alignment out of the crate? What about the fence? Mine seems twisted. I’ll do a video adjusting it very soon. Do you have a contact email or number for someone at Laguna? It seems you are the only one who has had any contact with them.
All I did was adjust the height on my tables and set the fence square. Nothing besides typical setup needed adjusted. When I was in contact with them getting shipping updates it was just the customer service email that’s on their website 👍🏽 there is a customer service phone number as well on there
@@JohnBuildsIt thanks. Based on comments on a few videos it just seems like Laguna is not getting back to anybody.
Anything that you’re not happy with? About to change out my jointer…
I feel like the way the wheels attach to the base could be better, they flex the body a little. But I don’t move the jointer around so that’s not really an issue for me and just about the only complaint I could come up with. It’s been an awesome machine!
@@JohnBuildsIt thanks man. I won’t be moving it either so if that’s the only issue….
Laguna has the worst customer service of any tool company
It has been one year and a half and I have not received so much as an email after I purchased a jointer that came damaged and they have not fixed it or even attempt to fix it
Honestly feel like you can say that about a lot of brands sometimes. Laguna has been great for me and that’s why I went with these over Jet, because I’ve never had a positive experience with Jet haha
Incredible how often I read comments about how useless Laguna support is, how they ignore customers that paid top dollars for their machines etc... I am so wanting to buy that jointer but dunno now, kinda spooked...
