Hey friends! After a long winter it's time to open up the hive! Last year was our first year beekeeping. We were not able to extract any honey as they needed what they created the first year to get them through the winter. We have heard of many bee losses in our area due to our harsh winters, so opening this hive for the first time after our first winter with bees, we weren't sure what to expect. We knew there was a chance they may not have survived, but once the days got warmer, we started seeing more and more honeybees flying around the homestead. Once it was finally warm enough, knowing for sure no more snow would be in the forecast, we opened it up. I love sharing our journey with you all and our learning experiences. The ups and the downs. The good days and bad days. The things we get right and the things we get wrong. You could do away with the two wsp boxes at the bottom and manage the hive in one 10 frame full depth. Bees do not require that much brood space. Just add the supers keeping them tight but giving them space.

Great bees . I’m not a fan of them. My moms brother raised them for years and years. He told me he had a suit if I’d like to go see them and I said no way.

How many queen bees in a hive and how do you know which is the queen bee

One queen per hive. The queen is much larger but is also longer and more narrow. We mark our queens to make it easier to spot them!
