    I’m about to try this today and I’ve only used fabric dye. I’m a little nervous since the girl’s wedding is in a week. How long will this process take? PLEASE any hints!
    Also, what does one charge for this? I’m clueless but very crafty.

    • @felicitywestmacott1484

      It took me about 7 hours total to spray the dress as mentioned in the video and you'll need drying time before you put it away. definitely do the spraying outside to avoid breathing the fumes too much. I would charge around £300-£800 to spray a dip dye effect onto a dresz depending the the number and depth of colours required and the nature of the dress. Tonswer more questions I wrote the blog post on my website, it covers all advice I'd have to offer. www.felicitywestmacott.co.uk. good luck!

    I love this dress. So beautiful. I have a bride who is looking for an ombre hem on her high low wedding dress. Will this spray color work on polyester? Does it dye the fabric?

    • @felicitywestmacott1484
      @felicitywestmacott1484  5 лет назад +5

      This dress was silk dupion and poly tulle and the spray worked fine on the tulle, no flaking! I've not tested the method for dye fastness myself though I have been told by others it is washable.

    Does the paint leave a lasting heavy smell? Does it make the material harden badly?

    • @felicitywestmacott1484
      @felicitywestmacott1484  Год назад

      it does stiffen fabric a little, but not too noticeably on something that isn't super soft already. I tend to spray onto middle weight tulle, not super soft for this reason. And I never spray woven fabric (unless it's a lining) only only 'fabric with holes in' like tulle, net or lace as that means there is less paint and less chance of stiffness. There is a smell at first, but it airs out after a few days.

    My wedding dress has cotton lace over a polyester gown. Can I paint the polyester with this product? I thought it would be neat underneath but am not against painting the lace either.
    It’s an outdoor wedding at a music festival - if it rains will the paint wash off?

    Hi there Felicity, wanted to ask why the decision for spray paint dye as opposed to a powder or liquid dye?

    • @felicitywestmacott1484
      @felicitywestmacott1484  2 года назад +1

      Hi Claudia, Two reasons, 1. the spray paint was donated to me so was free to use and 2. I had decided to use spray paint as I wanted the full rainbow effect which is impossible with wet dying on a made garment as the colours would mix. If I'd dipped the whole bottom of the dress in a huge dye-bath of yellow dye (and I don't have a dye bath that big anyway) (and I'd have needed to use i-dye for polyester fabrics which only work at boiling point, boiled for an hour so a massive undertaking) and then dipped it in red, and then dipped it in purple the bottom of the dress would have become brown, not purple! Obviously yellow+purple=brown. I may not have had much red on the dress either either as yellow+red=orange. Though with a strong enough red/burgundy dye you might just have achieved the yellow/orange/red section. The purple part wouldn't have happened. But really wet dye on a made garment is difficult enough, let alone such a big one, let alone a manmade fabrics one! Plus I'd then have to dye again in dye for silk (acid dye) as the fabric behind the polyester tulle layers is silk dupion. So basically spraying was the only sensible choice. Spraying also gives you complete control on colour placement where wet dying you risk splashes, and the colour seeping upwards, or not reach a section if the fabric is bunched up - you might end up with a tie-dyed look!

    my only question would be after spraying this dress was there any more care done was there rinsing or washing dry cleaning things that had to be done to keep the dye from spreading onto your skin or do you just spray and where

    • @felicitywestmacott1484
      @felicitywestmacott1484  7 лет назад +1

      well I just sprayed the dress and let it dry and then a few days later it was worn for the shoot. It's been in storage since in a dress bag and so far no problems, I mean the colour hasn't rubbed off into the bag or anything, it seems well 'sunk into' the fabric. None of the colour is anywhere near skin when worn, so that was never an issue. No cleaning tests yet. I don't think it will clean in any conventional, but then with all the colour and dark hem any dust at the bottom won't show. Cleaning, if it is ever needed, will be a bit of trail and error process I guess. If I ever repeated the exercise I'd probably use a more conventional fabric dye (in a spray gun) so that cleaning might be more straight forward, though still a worry! I only used the florists paint this time as it was free and offered!

      Hi, in this original dress, which was the first I ever did I had donated cans, some of which were already partly used so it's very hard to say exactly how many I used. But when I do the same design again now I always make sure I have at least two of each colour in stock. Why do you use flower paint and not fabric paint?

    • @felicitywestmacott1484
      @felicitywestmacott1484  2 года назад +1

      I used the floral spray the first time as it was given to me free and the dress was being made for a an unpaid photoshoot - there was no budget. The floral paint had been recommended to me by other people on a costume facebook group as being suitable for this use. It has proved so, very much, and having got used to it I haven't yet got round to trailing any other method (though it is on my to do list). The floral spray is not washable (it is water proof but not rough and tumble/abrasion proof so can't be machine washed or dry cleaned) and as everything I make is for weddings, being wear-once occasions having it items washable isn't necessary. The floral paint supplies have been badly affected by Brexit issues though so I may need to get a move on finding other ways to colour my skirts!

    Would you reccomend this paint for any tulle fabric?
    I just ordered my wedding dress yesterday and I'm imagining adding a very LIGHT ombre to the hem of the tulle, to give it a sort of "rising out of sea foam" look.
    There aren't many places that do it professionally or don't charge a ridiculous amount. And I'm nervous but your video has me a little at ease.
