- I've had my RED Komodo for about a year so I thought it was time to review the camera and give my reasons as to why I think it might be the perfect camera.
The video will cover resolution, slow motion, low light, image quality, colour science, grading and the ND filter situation.

What about the SDI having the risk of blowing out? I heard it's pretty common. Is the monitor on the camera usable though? I think that's the only thing that holds it back from being perfect imo
There's a much higher chance of that happening when powering the monitor and camera from the same power source, as I'm using separate batteries it's much less likely to happen. As long as you follow the correct order of turning accessories on first then connecting the cables it shouldn't happen. To be fair this is an issue that Arri cameras can have as well (although much less common).
The Issue is on any SDI Device the same. Follow the rules and you never ever have any problems. 👌

Face detection autofocus?

Yes it’s still in beta but it does work very well
Phase detection! Not the same thing as face-detect AF, hope this helps. :)
are there any differences between autofocus quality regarding different AF lenses ?
I haven't noticed a huge difference in speed, although my 18-55 STM lens is noticeably quieter.

Dynamic range over 13 is kinda useless as you cant tell the difference the human eye cannot recognize it, so dont care if its just 16 stops.
It's useful if you want to capture a lot of shadow detail in high contrast scenes
@@AlwaysCinematic I mean sure, but I tend to not shoot in those conditions because its generally not a good idea and can be avoided most of the time.
As a Red Komodo owner I often want to check out latest posts but for some reason and this could be entirely my fault or just down to RUclipss algorithm but I get fed these kinds of videos that maybe well meaning but have some of the worst footage of any camera on RUclips and I would love to know how to filter this feed. It maybe the nature of the RUclips algorithm to push certain content with certain tags and maybe that’s why so many would be posts are made on certain products being reviewed but the Komodo (because it’s a cheap Red) seems to have attracted a certain kind of owner who seems to post some of the most amateur looking footage imaginable. Most posts with other cameras are hard to screw up. The bmpcc6k has an idiot proof look and the eponymous A7siii usually has enough shallow depth of field and sharpening for it to stand out on most RUclips posts. The Komodo like so many other cine cameras shooting Raw expects the image to be manipulated in post and this is where so much amateur footage gets produced by would be or newbie Komodo users. The Red image is comparatively underwhelming until it is pushed around in post. This however doesn’t really explain the often poor camera work framing and exposure of most Komodo posts by these relatively inexperienced users. This RUclips’s handle using cinematic may have RUclips’s algorithm confused but I would love to filter out any post that uses either that word or buttery smooth. In all seriousness if someone knows how I can clean up my feed from RUclips please let me know. Regarding the RUclipsr here I have nothing personal against them but I wish they would either learn to use the camera before talking with authority about it or not post. Unfortunately “always cinematic” sums up how far machine learning has yet to evolve.

For someone who spent all that money on a cinema camera just to film Weddings, girlfriend & friends skating, you are 100% not the one to ADVISE or CONVINCE anyone on what CINEMA camera to go for dude 🤣.
At 0:49 hmmm you do know that with BRAW, you also get FULL control to ISO, WB & colour control also just like R3D files right? 🤷🏿♂
I can’t post the commercial stuff on RUclips. Braw is recorded after debayering which limits the amount you can change the image without degrading the quality especially for iso changes

I grade Arri & braw or R3d & braw always and they go as far as I need them to go dude. Don’t put down other formats just to help you sleep at night for spending so much on a camera just to film weddings, girlfriend and skaters
