      I don't know if he would "crush Stan" but like Gill said his game has certainly become much more disruptive for players like Stan who rely on rhythm to play their best tennis. 2015 Novak has 2023 Novak beat in fitness, backhand, and returns but 2023 Novak has the mental edge, forehand, and serve (just better all round game). I'd love to see that matchup.

    What Gill said is absolutely right on about Novak giving Wawrinka too much rhythm in those big grand slam matches from 2014 to 2016. And not disrupting it enough. It's one of the biggest reasons that Stan almost never beat Federer. Federer could constantly switch it up against Stan and keep him guessing. It's something that Djokovic has definitely gotten better at.

      I was always puzzled how dominant Federer was against Stan. They both had the one hander, but Stan seemed to have more juice on the serve and groundies. Federer was just cold blooded I guess. No sympathy for a fellow Swiss. Not very neutral.

    Been waiting for this! Just want to give a big tip of the hat to Stan. What an inspiration - and love that he (and Andy and Venus) continue to play the game because they just love it so much. Stan was funny in his press conferences and interviews going into the match, and Djokovic made nice comments about him after the match. No one expected Stan to win, but he really got hot in the 3rd set and it was something to watch to see his firepower against Novak's defense (and his own firepower). Stan could have folded, but he put in the effort and made it a super fun 3rd set.

    One of your finest analyses: each of you weaving in and out seamlessly with striking observations - like the violinist, violist and cellist in a Beethoven string trio.
    Impossible to count the many perceptive comments the Three of you made - but I single out Amy’s and Gil’s assessment of Hurcacz which was clinical, though points to Joel for his evaluation of HH and K Anderson as “linear”. Linear equations are the simplest to solve in algebra.
    Looked at another way, Stan’s peak occurred around age 30, likely very close to the mean for the top players historically. On the other hand, Novak’s peak, despite many apparent peaks (2011, 2015, 2020) has yet to be determined as his performance level amazingly continues to improve. So Novak may be the “fat tail” of tennis player statistical distributions - in other words, a black swan.

    • @ZacharyShahan
      @ZacharyShahan Год назад +2

      Superb comment. And I also loved Joel's labelling of Anderson and Hubi as "linear" players. There are definitely players who stand out in that way - predictable, so easier in a way to beat once you solve the (simple) equation. I think Tommy Paul's coach has been trying to get him to break out of that mold, telling him to think of tennis as an art more and try to be like Picasso (or smth like that). This is one of Tommy's top weaknesses still, though, imho - too linear and too prone to default patterns and shots. Again, he has great hands and skill (like Hubi) and would love to see him learn to play more creatively and keep climbing the rankings.

    YEAH! Wimby-23 after 3 rounds round-up! Novak & Stan was a throwback delight! That 3rd set was very competitive until Mr. Clutch got to the tiebreaker. The Gumby-Spiderman in Nole's game is sublime especially @ Wimby. Think Hubie might get a set, but Novak in 3 or 4 against Hurkacz. Wimby-22 it was Nick K. Wimby-23 it's Carlitos for the challenge. Novak also closing rallies with many fewer shots these days. Agree with Gill that Nole's arsenal and toolbag have expanded & improved so Nole 2023 might very well have beaten prime Stan @ some of those losses to Wawrinka. Props to Andy & Stan for being such later-years up-leveled players and making this Wimby-23 a very special one for thaese reasons alone! Thanx Joel, Gill & Amy. Cheers, Milan

    I completely agree with Gil on why Wawrinka presented a difficult matchup for Djokovic. I think that's why Nadal and Federer didn't have as much of a problem against Wawrinka. The top spin from Nadal and the slices and net charges of Federer just disrupted Wawrinka's matches so he couldn't hit from his strike zone. I believe that's why Gasquet has a good record against Wawrinka too. Though the style is completely different, I think that's why Medvedev plays better against Djokovic than Nadal too, because Djokovic gives him more rhythm without pulling him out of his comfort zone. Although I'm the biggest Djokovic fan, I have to say that back in the 2011-16 era, he was relying on his ability instead of his strategies. He has learned a lot about how to win by disrupting opponent's rhythm rather than trying to get himself into a baseline rally rhythm all the time. That's why he has more wins where he barely hit winners post-2018 than before. He added this new way to win, despite how great he already was. That's why he's the GOAT.

    Stan is a player where if you allow him time to wind up, he will blow you out of the court with his raw power, and that was what he did in those 3 matches in the past against Novak. That is also why Stan doesn't do well on grass where the game's much faster. Roger for example, with his aggressive tennis and hitting on the rise, never allowed Stan that luxury of time and always rushed Stan. It is no coincidence that Roger's three losses against Stan (Roger-Stan's head-to-head is 23-3!) all came on clay where the bounce is much slower and Stan can wind up and unleash all that power. 14:33 14:34

    I would favor Hubi over almost anyone at Wimbledon, and he's playing a bit like he did in 2021 when he got to the SF and then ran into a red-hot Berrettini. And, frankly, Djokovic said right after the match today what is so difficult about him - his tremendous serving, and his long arms (and good hands) that make it so hard to pass him at net. I immediately thought that Hubi should take note of that and have the confidence to come to net more. IN GENERAL, I think Hubi would do better throughout the year if he came to net more. He's really good at it, and as Gill points out, his forehand is a major problem in baseline rallies and one that I think players have learned to pick on (quite like the case with Coco Gauff on the women's side).
    Despite being one of the best grass court players in the world, if he plays his normal game, Djokovic will have an easy match. All Djokovic has to do ("all") is get more serves back than most people, and then target that forehand hard in rallies. Hubi will be "easy" to break here and there in that case. And it will again be so hard for Hubi to break Djokovic - again, especially because of that forehand weakness. I think Hubi's only chance would be to come to net obsessively - including on return. But how likely is that to happen? And even if he did do that, he doesn't do it enough throughout the year to do it successfully for 3/5 sets against Djokovic.
    It's probably as hard of 3R match as he could get, but I can't see Hubi having a chance. May win 1 or max 2 sets on nearly perfect serving and if Djokovic lapses for a service game or two. But even that is unlikely.

    The answer to your question Gill about how Stan beat Novak on the way to his three slam titles, is that at AO 2014 Stan won in a close match of the rerun from the previous year where Novak won a similar match 12:10 in the fifth, so a narrow victory but certainly deserved. In Paris, Novak was tight because he tried too many times to win the RG and didn't succeed, so he tightened up, Stan played fantastically and stepped up when he needed to, and at the end UO 2016, Novak was already dragging his injured elbow that he refused to operate, let me remind you that already in the next AO 2017 he lost in the second or third round to Istomin...
    I'm someone who has followed Novak since his earliest days and Stan has always been a tough opponent for Novak, and even though Novak beat him regularly and it was at the point before Stan's AO 16:03 wins for Novak in their HtH, all those wins were almost always close. . Stan always seemed like someone who was capable of beating Novak but somehow always lost, and I think he had flashes where he played really great tennis with the best one-handed backhand on the tour.
