If you look at a lot of other producer's tuts or mix rundown videos, you'll see that they use saturation on vocals (or other elements of the mix) and aren't hiding it. It's a well known trick since mixing in the digital domain :).
@@excelmckaterny It won't make it sounds like mixing on an nice analog desk tho' (plugins behave, react and sound differently, even without mentioning summing), but it can give you an approximation of it.
This was SO helpful. I have been doing our own mixing/mastering on our channel, and despite having over 200K subs, I'm not super great at it yet. It's good enough for fans to enjoy, but the more I learn about audio, the more picky I am becoming, and the better I want to do for our channel. Although the style of our music is quite different than your examples, I think that everything you explain can be taken and used on a multitude of styles. Thanks for these videos!!! Definitely subbing!
Devvon you're the truth bro. I've been listening to your music for years and I was surprised to learn how gifted you are at engineering as well. I've always felt like it's not fair how much talent you have, but I'm glad you're using it to help others. You inspired me to go to Full Sail (where I am currently) and you took my mixing skills to the next level. Keep doing what you do bro. You're changing lives.
Been using saturation to my vocals a lot lately and it's been incredible in terms of making it sound thicker, bigger and push through the mix much better. Love your channel brother.
I cut over to my DAW halfway thru the video and put Saturn 2 on my vocal track and DAMMMM. Brings it to life . Always knew about it but never really used it . It will be on my vocal tracks from now on . Thank you . Great videos.
I just started to discover this concept. In logic you can click on saturation in the compressors and I noticed it fattens up the vocals. Previously I had always been afraid of saturation on a vocal because I equated it with guitar distortion!
Enjoyed this video. I was analog guy for the longest time... go out of recording some years ago when my close friend and studio partner was in a horrific accident. Just now getting back into the recording side and these type videos open up the possibilities of what I need and looking for. Thanks
I do mostly hard rock and metal and saturated guitar sounds with added harmonics are very common but after watching this video it finally clicks for me as far vocals go, as you said analog saturation through driving the preamp slightly adds harmonics essentially adding more content to the recording thus making it richer and fuller!! thanks man eye (ear) opening for sure
I like it.. depends on the vocal chain.. if you’re using a cheap mic cheap interface etc etc.. be careful it’ll bring those ringy cheap frequencies out.. emulations with compression tape eq etc etc.. it all sounds good if your vocal chain is top notch.. if it ain’t don’t be surprised if your vocals don’t come out like your references.. just it is what it is.. idk what mic this is but It sounds decent and It can definitely hear it with saturation..
Broooo....I've been watching all of your tutorials from the start! Your tutorials helped me...I'd say 70% from all the knowledge I've got from different sources so far! Keep doing what you doing brother! God Bless!
Devvon, i watched like all ur videos. You're a savior. I was struggling so hard to get better mixes and there's no one better than u on yt. I'll come back in few years after conquering the music world thx to u. See u in 2027. Keep it up never stop pls i'm so interested in making music when i watch your vids. sry for the english, french struggles
Nice video! I use tape distortion alot, its such a powerful tool. What it does to the high end makes it louder and less harsh at the same time. Im doing my first song with vocals now so im glad to have found this.
Love your voice man, you can truly sing! I was wondering if you could make a short and concise series on this channel about singing techniques you have found to be extremely practical in improving open throat singing & smoothing out rapping tones for lower vocalists, vocal range, and power. I would love to learn your techniques!
I sometimes use UAD saturation plugins such as oxide and studer. Believe me, it doesn’t always compliment vocals. Sometimes, it’s better for vocals to be nice and clean with a few effects.
I was waiting for that video Devvon. And thanks a million for everything you shared, I will be always grateful to you....you're not wasting your time brother I am learning a lot from you. Keep the good work up
This is what I was looking for. I'd hear a certain "sound" in rap vocals thats hard to explain but it's like it's volume is low but it's loud and clear. My vocals always end up sounding raw, although I eq, compress and do other editing to them. I think this is IT. 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
You are an awesome human for giving free game like this and showing how you actually mix your stuff when other musicians or other engineers would never give all the sauce, it would be awesome to see how to you do all your busses or sends though, it seems like you have reverbs as a send and then send the sends to more sends. I am super curious on how you do that. Your music is awesome and the fact you do it all yourself is everything
Great info and I'll suggest muting your mic in between "replays" , it brings your feedback and room noise into the audio while we're listening to the audio tracks.
Omg I am so happy to find this channel! Working very hard to become better at vocal producing so this was awesome. Will be binge-watching your channel!
I think if you walk us through your songwriting process, that could give us an insight on what to do when you get stuck. like what are the do's and don'ts of songwriting and/or songwriting collaboration and how to maintain a healthy, productive songwriting session, without killing the vibe of the session? You have a gift my brother, that goes beyond your phenomenal musical production. The gift of sharing. Thank you.

Head on over to www.helpmedevvon.info for templates like this session!
Thanks for MUCH for this. But please where in my plugin chain should this be, and do I need to EQ after adding saturation!????
Devon can you do a video to help us singers with Multi-syllabic/Fast rap singing? My vocal coach doesn't really teach those techniques.
Tell me the name of your album please

Please create a template version for Presonus Studio One users, am sure am not the only one. Thank you!
