This is gold. On the same day you release this video, i spent hours scratching my head about how i was going to solve i problem i have with a particular type of image i'm working on - an ICM panned shot that needs an ND for part of the exposure only. This makes it easy. Many thanks and all the best - great vid, btw!
But there is a drawback to this design. At the minimum ND value, the image will be darker than without a filter and it will not be possible to separate it from the adapter (Therefore, for dark scenes such an adapter is unnecessary
I noticed these online the other day too actually, and was definitely intrigued. I'm glad you made a video about them, so thanks for sharing your experiences. Although as with ND's in general - how is the glass quality? Any color casts or other optical defects? Cheers
Many of variable NDs introduce tint to the colors. This one seems to demonstrate this problem as well. If having faithful reproduction of colors is important for what you do, use only high-quality non-variable ND filters.
Another benefit is not having to stack multiple filters at the front of your lens, such as ND and Black Promist. Now you can have just one filter, less risk of vignetting.
NO M42 or Leica M versions? That sucks, but also quite surprising.
Buying a large variable nd filter and using step up adapters can do the same job as well. You don't have to worry about the lens size or type with this method. You just gotta get a variable nd filter that is larger than all your lens sizes.

Is there an E-mount to E-mount to just use my everyday Sony lenses? Or is it just aimed at using older, fully manual lenses? On the website it looks like all the mounts convert to e-mount, but not from e-mount. Thanks for all the great videos!
Adaptors are required to adjust flange distance between old SLR cameras to mirrorless and are a special length.
An E -> E adaptor will just act like an extension tube.
Look into "clip-in" filters that clip over the sensor.

Sure, the lens will work exactly the same as the distance to sensor is not changed
How is the green color cast? So many VNDs are not great for color.
It looks like there's a green color shift as the ND is applied in the video. That would be my concern, too.
@@Abderian it was shot in a green area and with bright sun there will be green kick, but I was wondering if it might have been a deliberate choice to film there too.
I have never used a CPL filter / Variable ND filter which is placed behind the lens. I only use it in front of the lens. Can the X-Spot issue that usually appears when using a variable ND filter on an ultra-wide lens also appear when using a filter behind a lens like that? I just haven't tested it. thanks,.

Those (CPL and VND) look awesome -- but don't they shift infinity focus on the adapted lenses?
nope , the distance is the same, so infinity is at the same place as a normal adapter
@@MathieuStern -- And they make them in M43 mount (love my old Lumix G85) -- and they are even cheaper than the full-frame versions! Yay!!!

Hello Mathieu, would it be worthwhile for you to make a quality comparison video in which you put the various MIR lenses through their paces? I've seen videos on Mir lenses where only one or at most two lenses were presented or compared with each other, but there isn't one on RUclips yet where someone explicitly analyses the MIR lenses as completely as possible. Maybe that would be something for you.
Anyone can now admire Helios in its entirety at your or Simon's utak. As I said, MIR is still missing.
