I soo..love it to hear my Singapore being mention in songs. First heard it by Glenn Miller when I bought his record at 16, years later manhattan Transfer..then in oe of the judd country song ..Never realised that she is loved in song with romantic simplicity. Today at 67 just looking and listening this , my heart becomes 16 again.. Thank you for upload.
It was 1976 when I first caught the hypnotic strains of this gorgeous song while moving thru Vancouver's PNE with my family. It was instant dejavu, as I turned into the crowd to robotically follow the music, before discovering it was coming from a dance studio demo. The couple dancing the foxtrot mesmerized me, and thus, began a 10 year love affair with ballroom dancing and all things old timey... Pastiche is timeless, every song on the album remains a gem. No one sang and performed liked MT
Such a great rendition of an equally great song. The hairs on the back of your neck just bristle with intrepidation. Love the harmonies. Modern music just doesn't have it.
When music was great. So glad I have a grandson who has a great voice and loves close harmony. Just 15 with a bass voice. Will be at Wells Cathedral School performance of Grease next week to see him. Go Charlie!
I love this and Chanson D`Amour i was born in 1970 so im 51 now and i still have the vynil album Pastiche with this on! I was 8 yrs old when it came out! .being a dj and record /music collector i have NEVER got rid of any vynil i bought / had given to me over the yrs so i have albums from the 60s ect and even when cds came in in the 80s and then digital i have kept hold of all my vynils albums ,7" singles and 12" singles!
I'm two years behind you but same thing, I used to listen to my Dad's copy of Pastiche and look at the mysterious, glamourous sleeve art. My parents would play this song and Chanson D'Amour a lot, some of the earliest music I can remember.
A Glenn Miller special that transcends time. I hope Glenn Miller will be in heaven. I just adore the video and the innocence that this song portrays. The singers voice and sailor style clothes are so touristly swish. And the allurement of that Shalamar perfume is so irresistible. Ahhh that Oriental experience is blissed to the maxx in less than 3 minutes of song. WOW.
No disrespect to Mr. Miller, but the first recording was by Harry James with Frank Sinatra. The Miller version didn't come out until a few weeks later.
My goodness! I have the '45 of this single that I inherited from my mother. It's actually my favorite version of this song, and I'm completely surprised that I could find it. Yay for RUclips to keep fantastic songs from fading into obscurity!
I loved this and all the other Man Tran stuff in the late 70s and early 80s. I also loved Ska, Rockabilly and the Mod Revival then. They were wonderful times when music was so diverse and interchangeable. Oh Happy Day!
That Tim Hauser... I was 16, me and my mother got tickets to front row seating to their concert. I had such a crush on him. He saw me smiling and looking at me, looked at me directly, and winked at me. I will treasure that memory forever! God Bless you Mr. Hauser...see you again, on the other side.
Does anybody know anything about this song? What inspired the songwriter to create this lovely song? What's the deeper meaning of this song? I am fom Singapore, by the way.
They say that the music for the song "A Little Street In Singapore" was loosely based on the music of a once popular soldier song in WW1 about a love lost. Does anyone know the name of that old WW1 soldier song?
This IS the song. This song is a very old song from the 1930s and was popular during World War 2. Many artists, including Manhattan Transfer, did cover versions of it. Probably the most famous version was by Benny Goodman and his orchestra. I have always loved this version by Manhattan Transfer, but they didn't write it, they just copied it. Here's a link to Benny Goodman's original version from the 1930s and 1940s. ruclips.net/video/upfn5Ldmo4Q/видео.html
+Geoff Broad In the mid- Fifties my dad was posted to Malaya. We lived in Johore Bahru, which was across the Causeway from Singapore. I remember both well from a child's perspective. We left that part of the world in sunshine and arrived in Southampton on a drizzly day in September- how much I wished that the Empire Windrush would turn around and head back East! Trish
@@divynem I think the point is that Miller didn't have the first recording. That honor goes to Harry James with a young vocalist named Frank something ... oh, yeah. Sinatra. Miller's version came out just a few weeks later. His band didn't really mature until the 1940-41 period.

I haven't heard this song in over 40 years! Wow, it's been in my subconscious for a long time.

This was a MASSIVE hit for MHT; they could do no wrong during the mid to late 70s - and even made into the 80s with 'Twilight Zone'!!
Excellent song I love Manhatan Transfer ❤
Awesome- harmony heaven
Manhatan Transfer were excellent brilliant music x
My goodness! I have the '45 of this single that I inherited from my mother. It's actually my favorite version of this song, and I'm completely surprised that I could find it. Yay for RUclips to keep fantastic songs from fading into obscurity!
Three words to describe this - class, class, class.
I loved this and all the other Man Tran stuff in the late 70s and early 80s. I also loved Ska, Rockabilly and the Mod Revival then. They were wonderful times when music was so diverse and interchangeable. Oh Happy Day!

That would be Alan Paul. I don't recall him getting lead vocals much. Of course he's 35yrs older now (as are all of us who remember this on TOTP).

PURE CLASS IN A GLASS.....
Damn, everyone's so young and good looking. Just learned that Hauser passed away in 2014. Time's marching on, everyone gets old.
+john dow Saw them in concert back in the 70's. Fantastic. RIP Tim.
Cheer her up? I could dedicate my life to it. And her. That's Laurel Masse, and I think her mission on Earth is to capture my heart.
Smiles😊🌹💃💯🌹😊
Uploaded on our wedding week 8.8.88 in Singapore!
Based on the original 1940 Glenn Miller version. One of the saxophonists heard here was in Miller band at that time
Frankie's version with Harry James Orchestra was 1939
Que belleza un tema inolvidable

Reminds that Singapore was once an exotic place and places like Raffles were the places to go. Now it’s just a clearing house
It's an over the top set for totp even in them days!!
For this to be on "Top of the Pops" it must've been a hit in Britain - which it wasn't in the USA, although they certainly had other hits at home.
Magical
I knew a girl on a little street in Singapore. Love ya Lek long time ago.
He seems like he's miming that.

Best two years of my life were in Singapore in the early '90s. Happy Days! BTW this song is not Glenn Miller's originally.
You are right wingaard it is not Glenn Miller, it is way better than Glenn's
Lived there twice back in the 1960s.Took my kids there to visit my sister back in 2007.Love the place.

Alan paul is SO handsome here for sure see him teasing the girls in the audience i bet he had his way that fella.
Camp as tits love it
search on this very page the bingcrosby1903 post
glenn miller version, from which manhattan transfer took the inspiration
I think the song and the whole production was little above the heads of the crowd there. This was old folks music to them.
Peorhum - you'd be surprised; I was in a Record Shop at the time, and a LOT of young people bought this Single! Great Song and performance!
He sings like Gene Kelly dances
Singapore should make this their theme song for their 50th national day 2 yeas from now
thumbs up if you agree
Please put a stamp on that redhead and mail her to me.
+Lee Larson She looks bored with the whole thing. But I'm sure you would cheer her up.
Redheads are often postured as almost saying out loud "Ah, yes, I'm divine and I know it."
Love her sexiness....so suave’
the kids faces...
i think he sang it live
Amo esta m'usica.
Any one know where I can find this ? Not on itunes or Amazon
just in case you haven't seen it since, it's on Spotify, all their albums are now :)
stylish
Shame they were miming
Another classical TOTP performance.
Quelle belle époque!
Is that the BBC? I mean, hats off the to props department for raiding Tony Blackburn's dressing room.
Seems that these songs were targeted at the remaining members of the WWII generation; nostalgia sells... 💸
Is it out of sync or am I dreaming?
Sorry, I got it, LOL. What a silly question.
I assure you that singapore does NOT look like that any more. LOL.
But why do you hate it Daphne, are they too good looking to be Singaporean ?
What's "TOTP"?
top of the pops
I think it's a German TOTP programme
Hate the video (I'm a Singaporean), but love the song.
