You got in some authentic sheep handling…no surprise you were on the tools! This video is pure gold.

One of the many reasons that I like following your varied and interesting lives, is that you are not afraid to try something new, whether it is Dinghy racing as The Yuppies, learning to sail for the first time in your new house, Shellfish farming or shaving the blunt end of Ewes! Hear of something new to do, formulate a (rough) plan, and just get on with it. Boy, I've missed out on so much over the years, but now I get to live vicariously through you both, Thank you.

It is amazing to watch a good work dog move stock. I live in Central Oregon. We often pass ranchers moving live stock down highways. Just a few people on horses and a couple of good dogs and the stock move down the road is a controlled and safe manor. Keep up the good work, love your videos.

A day late to watch this one. Wow! Who knew sheep herding, shearing, and all is not that glamorous! It is hard work! Great place to land and visit, your host was so gracious. Love the banter, cheer, and total isolation that it exudes at the Southern Tip. Good place to be away from the Maddening Crowd! Thank you, excellent footage, informative video, and smiling is all in for me! Thank you Ewes, for such a remarkable look at this career!?

Back when I was 18/19 I was a Presser in a Shearing Gang (Around the Catlins, South Otago, NZ). Mostly for 3 or 4 shearers, and using that press machine that he was showing you there. Yes it was very hard work, and the bales were easily 160-180kg. Best shed ( or worst depending on sweat) was a nearly 4 day job, 4 shearers doing more than 1200 sheep per day, and I pressed well over 100 bales. I was expected to keep up, and be ready(tidied up) to leave the shed at the end of each day with the boss.

"Can you find me a ruby, honey?"
    "I'm looking for a sapphire!"
Can't help but think of the Gen 3 Pokémon games and their Gen VI remakes 😂And I'm sure Kiwis will be teaching their children about the great and ancient butt hieroglyphic at Gemstone Beach for generations. While Slope Point is the southernmost point of the South Island, it's not the southernmost point in the whole country. That title goes to Jacquemart Island which is over 661 km/410 miles from Slope Point and is a part of the Campbell Islands. Sheep fun fact, the wild ancestor of the domestic sheep is the mouflon, and they're native to Armenia, Azerbaijan, eastern Turkey, Iran, and Cyprus

Really loved watching the teamwork of the dogs and master.
The way the dogs looked to the gentleman for both next command and approval of what they were doing speaks to both their natural talent and what I’m sure is many hours of training.
    A pleasure to watch.

    RE: Working dogs
We herded cattle with horses, pickups, tractors, motorcycles, and a dozen people on foot. Always difficult. After I moved out, I got my father an Australian shepherd pup. When that dog grew up -- about a year -- that dog herded those cattle easier and better than we ever did before. Great dog. Second in value only to our watchdog -- a chihuahua mix.

Spending a day on a working farm is a good way to increase your appreciation for your current job, no matter what it is, as long as it isn't farming. I did just enough hoeing gardens, watering pigs, gathering eggs, and putting up hay as a teen to really appreciate working indoors as an engineer, no matter how nice it might be outside on any given day.

It's actually a genius idea for an adventurer to buy a cool place, one you'd like to retire in would be smart, then airbnb it while you travel, block out any days you want to be at home base, then hit the road again and when the day comes that you want to retire, you've already got a home, fully paid for after all the airbnbs ready to plant a garden and enjoy. As housing costs will just continue to escalate, it would be wise to buy now.

..... seeing how different industries work is always interesting. Farming in particular is so different depending on size from the farmer that works a day job to make ends meet and the slightly larger where the family runs the farm solo and then there are the huge factory farms that employ staff ... the huge dairy operations are mind boggling .... you sure lucked out I would say to experience this first hand .. growing up between the ages of 9 &13 my family lived in a small farming community in Germany and over the back fence was a farm yard. they did dairy, pigs, as well as ground crops .. spent a lot of time there and it furnished me with lots of great memories .... thx for sharing and the memory jog .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

Oooooooooooo I REALLY liked this one. I like them all of course, but these vids that connect the lives of a skilled worker to the day to day of our own are very important. Too many of today’s Gen are completely uneducated about life and think “food comes from the grocery store”; not a good mentality to live by for many reasons. I believe it’s critical for everyone to understand exactly how that sweater got on our backs or the food on our tables, the shoes on our feet, etc. I believe we gain a greater respect for each other and the planet we share (ALL animals/plants/beings) by gaining such insight and learning how many hands have come together to produce the end product we have and hold. This was fantastic, thank you for sharing the experience.

Back when I left school I worked on the largest sheep station in NZ, it wasn't for me,I certainly loved some aspects of it but if I never see another sheep it will be too soon. This brought back some great memories, including a shearing gang chasing me out of the wool shed in an attempt to shear off my long locks, terror won the day and I left them eating dust!

I've shorn sheep... Around 1972. I didn't much care for it, either.
"I wouldn't even know what to look for..." Looks like a large pebble of green jasper right there, about 11 inches to the left of your hand at 3:21. It's just to the left of the larger, light gray rock pointing to the 1 o'clock position.
As for your incredible video-editing skills: Yes, you might overdo it a bit. The very high quality of your finished edits indicate either a background in studio video production, or at least excellent attention to the details of learning the craft on your own! I remember those eyes - of a ram, that bucked me off a fence for laughing, who said sheep were silly. What a funny farmer, honest humble, I bet he gives those dogs treats when no one’s watching! This is a bit of a lateral share to your video, so be a bit patient, please.
As a lifelong fan of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings book trilogy, I of course saw all 3 movies on opening day. I am also a fibers hand crafter, as I sew both by machine and hand, knit, crochet, macrame, etc. There is a scene in both the books and the 1st movie where, as the Fellowship is leaving Lothlorien to continue their quest, the elf queen Galadriel gifts the members of the Fellowship with cloaks made of wool woven by her handmaidens and which have never before been given to other than the elves of Lothlorien. The cloaks are described in the books as light and supple, yet amazingly warm. There is a bit of symbolism in the gifting of the cloaks as binding both the members of the Fellowship to each other but also as binding the elves of Lothlorien to the members of the Fellowship and their quest. So I was especially interested to see how these special cloaks were depicted in the films.
I was not disappointed. They are indeed light and supple, and have a very, very different weave to the fabric. After seeing this in the films, I did some research and found that the director of the films, Peter Jackson, a New Zealander, had searched all over his home nation for the perfect fabric and found a small sheep farm that raised a very special breed of sheep and also had imported very old industrial looms from England that also came with instructions (?) that programed the looms for specific weave patterns. Knowing the looms require yarn to weave fabric from, and being very interested in getting my hands of some of this special wool, I contacted the farm and was eventually able to buy myself one of the smallest "cones" they use to feed the looms with. I used the wool to knit myself a gorgeous winter cap, using 3 plys of the yarn per stitch. I still had hundreds of yards of the wool left over, so tackled a truly horrendous project of knitting myself a knee-length lace shawl.
Anyway, the tie in to this video is that, while I don't remember the name of the small farm, I do remember it's on the South Island and that it would not be difficult to find the name. The films focused a lot of attention on the farm and as a result they built cabins for visitors. What's really interesting is the history of the special breed of sheep they raise and of the huge looms they use to weave their wool into fabric. I think both you and your viewers may find a visit to the farm very informative, regardless of the farm's connection to the LOTR films...

👍🤩💝Sheep sheering is a definitely a thing. As if I have nothing better to do, I found myself watching a girl on RUclips who goes around to farms in the USA to sheer sheep. 😂💝

Oh my gosh, I (Val) am late getting caught up; didn't think I cared a whit about sheep farming. But apparently I DO, judging from the warmth in my heart after watching these farmers with those dogs and their little Dollies. I care a LOT! Who knew? Seriously one of my favorite videos of yours ever, and maybe 3rd place behind "night-time shark frenzy" and the "We-made-it-across-the-Pacific" videos. It was surprising and awesome. Now I want to visit a Kiwi sheep farm, asap! Thanks, guys!

    Nice
1:24 It's not close to Antarctica, but feels like it for sure. It's at about 46 South, about half way between the pole and the equator.
I grew up as a sheep farmer in Southland. We had around 10 thousand sheep, and I was a presser in my holidays.
I am now an economist living in Europe, so just for your information, New Zealand's agriculture (about the only country in the world) is Government support free (free trade) but we are restricted into almost all markets in the world, including the US and the particularly the EU. NZ feeds around 40 million people, and Southland, East of Orepuki, is some of the most productive land in the world. It grows, as seen, grass in the winter, so no indoor wintering of stock.

Great video. It's difficult for wool to compete with all the synthetic fibres, particularly as population has exploded in the last century alone. Your 'wool o graphic' should be in more clothes stores.

LOVED this!! Learned stuff about sheep shearing that I had no idea even happened, and watching the herding process and the communication with the dogs was fascinating! Your hosts were wonderful. This is one of my favorite videos you have done - and the hubs and I have been following you since RV days! We admire your camera work, editing, and music. It's always excellent, but there was something special about this particular video. Well done! Watching your videos always perks up my spirits and inspires me. Thank you!

Wait until you encounter the sheep ship. It is the ship used to transport live sheep from Australia and New Zealand to the Arabian Gulf states (e.g., Qatar, Saudi Arabia). If you end up downwind from it, your wish for electric drive will be rapidly replaced with the desire for a few thousand horsepower and a top speed of 250 knots.

There is a sheep dog trials competition here in NZ where farmers work with their dogs to get some sheep into a fenced off area. Sounds easy right? there might be something on YT from past competitions. It used to be on Prime-Time TV at one point! search YT for "A dogs show".
But its great you got to get involved a bit of rural life :-) Looks like you really enjoyed it!

Watching you both working with walking clouds was awesome! Also I can't believe you didn't go explore that cool copse of trees that matched Jason's hair! BTW, any updates on the HH44, Curiosity II? To all of the newbs who want to start a video editing, remember, Jason is a PRO, he can do the most amazing shots I have ever seen! Thank you Jason for bringing your A game and thank you Niki for the A game with EVERYTHING you do! You both are AMAZING!!! Hope you are well and happy :) Better than a TV Series.
