To be blunt and upfront, I don’t have much history with this band. Back in the mid-80s, at my first record store job, we sold A LOT of the first two Mercyful Fate albums and the first three Metallica albums. Personally, early Metallica was more up my alley than Mercyful Fate. For years l would go around shrieking, “Grandmaaa!” whenever someone purchased a Mercyful Fate/King Diamond album. I was quite the snarky puppy, but it cracked up some of my coworkers.
Thanks to Peter’s pal Pete Pardo - “Holy alliteration, Batman!” - from SOT, during the Panny Pancake Pandemic, l gave the first two MF albums another whirl. As you lovely lads stated, l enjoyed the dual lead guitar work, Kim’s vocals and the progressive nature of the material. King Diamond’s “extreme vocals” seemed quite tame to me after listening to Opeth for the past (near) nineteen years. Before l watched this episode, l played the Fatal Portrait album. I enjoyed it and listened to the entire record. I definitely have to give King - and MF - more listens in the future.
Keep up the groovy work, guys.
Cheers from The Big Apple. 🍎
Rock Out, Prog On & Pogo!
    Your pal and mine,
~ The Dueling 🤺 Doppelgänger known as Davey Cretin; from The Dreaded, Shredded and Unleaded CRETIN CLASSICS.
PS: l neglected to mention that when we sold out of Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Metallica, Megadeth, etc. albums back in 1985/1986, it would sometimes take WEEKS - or more - for us to get restocked!!

I love this album. *Severely* underrated in metal community, except for those that listen to King Diamond regularly already. Part of me wishes there was a proper remaster of this album, but then another part of me loves it just the way it is. I'd like to hear a remaster, but I think I would revert to the original. Side note - I want to know what the lines are behind the lady's head on the cover... Reminds me of the similar shapes on Melissa, but that's too dark to make out.. Also, more current but vocally right up this alley, check out Attic - 'Return of the Witchfinder'

Best thing King did was bring in Becky Baldwin and showcasing her bad ass bass skills.🤘🤘🤘

100 % agree. It took them long enough to make her an actual member. Vera still has 20 other bands to be in lol

I was a MF fan prior to this coming out, so I was really looking forward to it. It's a GREAT record, but for some reason I never loved the production (it seemed muted in some way). I thought the production was way better on Abigail. That said, there are a ton of classic songs on here Charon, Halloween, Dressed in White, to name a few.

I remember hearing this album and King Diamand for first time, I just couldn't stop laughing, his voice took some getting used to. That being said Conspiracy is my fav King D album, I just love the storytelling and dynamics of Kings voice along with the music. We need a new album though,17 years,!.

Venom was scary lol wtf..King is a true Satanist and has discussed that a lot..King is the epitome of an pagan who believes in ghosts and has had experiences with ghosts/ Them...this album is the next Mercyful Fate lp and is leading to the conceptual genre which I think he needs to stop...great review guys this lp was monumental to Fate fans

King Diamond isn't any scarier than Venom. Venom was/is heavier and more vulgar with their satanic musings
