I volunteer at a shelter that has taken in over 100 of these dogs. The response from the community has been absolutely heartwarming. Over 800 applications for them and the food and supply donations would over flow a shipping container. It's an amazing feeling when a dog who is terrified to come out of their kennel finally decides to and when they get outside to a play yard watching them just come alive again, feel freedom to run, freedom to sniff all the new smells of the outside world, watching a dog whose tail has been tucked firmly between its legs let the tail out to start to wag as they run and play romping around in an amount of space they've never experienced in their life. Volunteering at the shelter has always been an incredibly rewarding experience but I can't even describe the feeling you get when you see a dog who's lived in a cage for 5 years get outside and get to actually be a dog for the first time in their life.

      Scared to death.☹️
It may be better to adopt in pairs.
Although that would make adoption difficult for some families.
Even better to have another confident dog already established in the adopters home to show the new dog the ropes!
Hoping for the best outcome for ALL!

I pray ( literally) that People use their heads instead of their hearts when considering adoption of these dogs.
This is a lifetime commitment: financially physically, mentally, emotionally, and of your time.
To bring home one of these dogs, and then “change your mind” 30 or 90 days later, for WHATEVER reason, is selfish and a clear indicator you did not think this through, consider the dog, and made an emotion- driven decision.
Hoping for a great outcome and home for each of these dogs. What a sad life they have had thus far.
    It must get better.
Thanks to All the rescues! What a daunting, amazing rescue.
Most of these dogs will need experienced handlers that know what they are could be getting into.

    • @s.willis8426
      @s.willis8426 2 года назад +14

It's not necessarily experienced handlers that they need, they are very docile dogs. What they need is adopters with the patience of a saint who will allow them all the time they need to acclimate to just being a dog. People who realize that these dogs are going to be a bit fearful of new things as they've lived their lives in a cage.
But you're 100% right about not making an emotional decision in wanting to help without the consideration of the commitment of being a dog parent, especially for these particular dogs. I'm so glad my shelter has 2 very good behaviorists who are basically hand picking the people who get to adopt these pups out of the hundreds of applications we got. We've found homes for the initial 100 we got and none have been brought back because of the dedication of the behaviorists in finding the right people for these pups who do have some special needs. We've got about 75 more coming in the next few days.

It took a while for my rescue beagle to acclimate to a living in a home. Vinny was a show quality beagle who was most likely used in a breeding situation. We had him for 15 years. He had a medical problem that required medication and blood work checks. He was really quite wild when we brought him home. It took love and patience. We miss him so much now that he is gone. I'm sorry, to hear, about Lucy Cooper 😢. I'm sending a warm hug, from me & my two beagle boys, Charlie & Linus!
I know how you are feeling right now. 4 years ago, I had to return my beagle, Shiloh, to Heaven. She was 11 also. She had cancer, & the sweet little thing didn't want me to be sad, so she didn't show any signs until I only had two weeks to accept it. She was my best friend, as Lucy Cooper was for you! If Lucy Cooper liked to snuggle, then she's got a great "snuggle buddy", because that was Shiloh's favorite thing to do!
I wish there was something, I could say or do, to take away the pain you're feeling, but I still struggle with missing Shiloh. The only thing, I would say helps, is remembering how happy she made you, how she'd make you laugh by doing something silly, or how she'd make a "not so good day" go away with just a rub of her ears!

When you watch the very beginning of this video and see all of those beagles just jumping and carrying on and acting crazy and wagging their tails, they are just so so smart that they knew, they knew people were coming to rescue them and get them out of that place! If you look and watch them all wag their tails at the very beginning while they're still in their cages they're excited, they're overwhelmed with so much joy and wagging their tails at the same time and barking! Think about that? Those precious fur babies knew something good was going to happen for them that's why they were overwhelmed with so much joy and excitement and carrying on and jumping and wagging their tails and barking they are that smart, they knew they were going to be rescued and taken out of that place. ❤️❤️🥺🥺🙏🐾🐾😥 I am just so happy so glad that finally that place is finally shut down for good and no more suffering for those fur babies that they get to live a life of happiness joy, and have play toys and interact with each other and interact with other dogs as well and get to walk on grass for the very first time and finally see the light of day in the sunshine and finally get a breath of fresh air. Thank God there is a God who does exist who encourages people with sincere hearts to go rescue those precious babies. 😥🙏❤️❤️🥺
I have been following the Humane Society of the United States and the Beagle Freedom project and the Virginia coalition of protection for beagles organizations as well on Facebook. I have been following these organizations because I am an animal advocate and my heart goes out to those precious beagles and thank God they're finally rescued.I found out that those 4,000 went to shelters and the staff people in shelters must understand that most of them or all of them may have PTSD and they need to know how to handle that and not hurt them not get angry with them. They must have lots and lots of patients with those dogs because of where they came from. And the Beagle Freedom project from my understanding in a video they posted on their Facebook web page is they were going to send out flyers and pamphlets and brochures to the shelters that these animals go to to expect PTSD and or peculiar behavior because of where they came from and that they need to have a lot of patience and just give them love and happiness and understanding. 🥺🙏❤️ The Beagle Freedom project was hoping to take most of them or all of them but it didn't work out that way. The reason being is because they are professionals and they have done this many many times before in the past that they know how to rehabilitate, Foster and give them precious babies a good good life before they put up for adoption to a loving family. Instead according to what they said on their website, they ended up going to shelters which is not really good if you think about it, because the people who runs the shelters needs to know about their behaviors that it's possible all 4,000 beagles may have PTSD because of where they came from. And they need to know also that it requires a lot of love, and attention and compassion with a sincere heart and a lot a lot of patience with them. I hope the people who runs the shelters understand that. ☹️🙏❤️

I've adopted 5 beagles over the years. One beagle was 12 years old . Our newest one is 7 years old. Beagles love walks, food, being with you, food, and more food. So you have to feed them very carefully

Former beagle owner here, and you are absolutely correct about beagles. Mine lived a good long life and was treated like a queen, but you can not take the scent hound out of them. She was like a Houdini and could be a master escape artist if something caught her scent. lol..... She was never a hunting dog or around hunting dogs, yet she did the classic hunting vocalizations as soon as she was out and on the "trail of something"..........hunting was an instinct she didn't have to learn.
RIP my little Chloe.......always led by the nose....lol.

Be ready and go into it with open eyes. These dogs have not had "normal" lives, interaction with people. They haven't been picked up, petted, trained, been talked to or played with. It takes patience. I pray all who are adopted stay with their families and none get returned. It DOES happen.

The shelter I volunteer at has taken in over 100 of these dogs. People don't just get to adopt them, they have to meet with and be approved by one of our behaviorists. These dogs are being placed in situations where they will have the ability to thrive with owners who know exactly what type of dog they are getting. If they have to come back we'll gladly take them back and try again but so far all we are getting back is heartwarming reports of how well they are doing now that they're just family pets. You are right about the patience part though, I've personally spent several hours trying to convince some of the older dogs I'm no threat and it's safe to come out of the kennel. It's all worth it when you get them outside and they get to romp around a play yard and just be a dog for the first time in their life.

These dogs are used to being handled but it is a huge responsibility it’s nothing like adopting a normal dog it’s very hard work, usually in this line of work you try not to engage with the animals to avoid creating a bond but in the labs they get a few hours of playtime and socializing. And as long as the drugs used represent no harm they will be put up for adoption.

I adopted 6 children in over 25 years. All were unique and stretch my limits, but not once did I ever contemplate " returning" them. I couldn't imagine returning an animal that I knew was "broken" either. Patience, patience, patience. Let the pup bloom at his or her speed. Spoli them, pamper them and reassure them 28 hours a day..yes, I know there are only 24, but any one of these dogs need more care and love that can be packed into 24 hours!

@@clairewyndham1971 That's a nice thought but pets aren't children. Say you adopted one of these dogs and your cat constantly terrorized it. Maybe not your cat, maybe the dog has a fear of a human member of your family that despite your best efforts can't be overcome. Would it be fair to make the dog live under those conditions? The answer is no, the dog would be better off living with someone else who didn't have it living in fear. That's why we would let the animal come back to us to find it a better home where it could thrive instead of living in conditions where it was constantly afraid.

Everyone just be aware that Beagles are wonderful pets for *some* people. Beagles have very specific needs and rules. They can never be let off the leash in public because of their nose and wanderlust. They are escape artists and will dig out of yards if left alone for any amount of time. They are VERY difficult to train. They have VERY loud baying which makes them terrible apartment dogs. And they are very high energy under 6 years old and very low energy later in life. They love to burrow and have a tendency to bury themselves under blankets and clothes at night. They hate the cold. They don't like water for the most part. Owning multiple beagles is actually easier than owning a single beagle because they hate to be alone due to their pack instinct. So be very careful about seeing this video and wanting to be a savior. You won't do them any favors if you aren't experienced at owning a beagle or even a hound breed. They are cute, friendly, and loving but a massive pain in the ass if you don't expect certain behaviors.

Though he knows the basic obedience commands, he can be stubborn and he is very strong for his size. We can't let him off leash outdoors. It hurts my heart that there are actually people in this world who could do such horrendous things, but I know there are _tens of thousands_ of these monsters the world over. All of my pets have been rescues and I make a promise to each of them that no one will ever hurt them again. Unfortunately so many people who adopt animals don't realize the expense and time factor and end up abandoning them. That also breaks my heart.
