As a Pittsburgh native, I must say I appreciate the game developers making certain Pittsburgh neighborhoods look less overgrown in the post-apocalypse than they are in real life. Making us look better than we are out here
I stopped by Gasoline Street on First Ave and told one of the employees there what I was filming when he was taking my order. He told me "Welcome to Shittsburgh". Weird greeting, but great drinks
Please do this for the rest of the game, holy shit I cannot believe it. I always wondered how honest the game was to the locations. This answers a decades old curiosity. Excellent work.
It's crazy how much they put into the game from reality. I figured they'd hit on the go-to Pittsburgh iconography (like the bridges), but having so many actual buildings and roads adapted is so neat. It wasn't until watching this that I realized I've driven right by places they'd been.
Damn the production quality is amazing, I really thought this was a 100k subscribes channel before I checked the subcount. Keep up the great work, you'll make it far!
Would love to see Seattle since part 2 is more recent I bet they put in a lot more effort on the realistic locations which is saying a lot because this was already very impressive

@@SmooviesTVYo I wanna say bro you did an Amazing job on this Video, this look like a video from Gameranx or A Big Channel. Just subscribed bro wish you all the best ❤
I've seen some comparison videos before, but these two videos you made are by far the best ones. You name the landmarks, show them, and how they were moved, it's informative. And should I ever go there, at least I have some locations to visit and see thanks to this video! Really wish there will be more for the rest of the game (SLC, Jackson, Lincoln, even if they're probably much different from their real life counterpart). And I hope you'll make a big one (or a series) for Seattle in Part 2, because apart from the obvious comparisons with photos on other channels, no one is comparing the geography like you do, and I really need to understand how Seattle works in the game because when looking at a map, I just don't get how the Seraphites island works and why the Space Needle is on it, especially when you start on the island you can see the city in the distance, and the angle doesn't seem to match. And a smaller one about Santa Barbara would be great too :) You just gained a subscriber!
Thank you so much for the encouragement! Yes, I plan to finish showing off the rest of TLOU and TLOU2, and I'm eager to show how they shifted chunks of Seattle around. Stay tuned! I'm currently wrapping up an hour long video showing how the Unova region in Pokemon Balck and White compares to NYC, and then I plan to hop back over to TLOU ✌️
Yep, ‘creative licence’ very much in full effect, that! Much like they did (as displayed here) with Pittsburgh’s buildings, Naughty Dog took several liberties with structural locations, not least of all with the Space Needle - I think it’s mentioned either in the ‘Grounded II’ documentary or the developers’ in-game commentary for the Remastered edition of Part II.
Great comparison video, man! As a decade-long fan of this game, I found this a fascinating addendum to see the source locations that inspired the game’s playable environs. Lovin’ yer work, dude, keep it up!
@@SmooviesTV Cool, I have family that lives about 15 minutes north of the city and I know every single spot you pointed out. Very well done and it deserves more recognition than it gets.
Holy Cow, naughty dog really does their homework eh? I’ve only really seen people doing comparisons between Seattle and the second game, but this is super eye opening. Great video!
After coming back from pittsburgh and not knowing about this connection, the resemblance is so striking in hindsight. Thank you so much I look forward to more!
wow this was exactly the type of video I hoped to find after playing the game just now. Pittsburgh native all my life so it was really cool to be there for a solid 4-6 hours of the game
This is a VERY well researched/made video. I would love for you to later look into recreations from other games, like Detroit Become Human for Detroit, Ghostwire Tokyo for Tokyo, and Crysis 2 for New York City(remastered, if you want the higher detail).
I’m from Pittsburgh and the worst thing that happened to them in this whole video was jumping into that dirty ass river. They definitely came out that water infected with something
i hope you will eventually make it out to salt lake!!! i've lived here for a couple of years and played part 1 within that time, which was both exciting and hilarious because it's not actually very similar at all besides random mountains and the mormon temple lol. loved this video and the concept, i've always wondered how accurate the other cities are!!!!!
Yeah, unfortunately Salt Lake City in the game only has a handful of similarities to the IRL one. I would probably combine WY, CO, and UT into one vid, as each location barely has any substantial representation. Thank you for watching!
I live in Elliot and let me tell you that they certainly swip-swapped the north side and Duquesne heights lol. Looking at a map of Pittsburgh the way we were in the video, north side is across the river above the city, and Duke heights is below the city. Pretty neat they included my neighborhood in the game tho. I wish my street was on it, so close, too! Literally, like 2 blocks behind those big city steps in the video!
I could definitely be wrong, but I think the triangle building features in the horror film The Changeling, I think it’s used as an office building in the film?
That's right. In the post-interview for that episode, they mention that Kansas City looked more like the city they were shooting in Canada, so they just changed it for the show. However, it also makes sense from a logistics point of view - it's less distance that Joel and Ellie would have to walk
yo man just a thing i've noticed, while the elliott suburbs look very similar to the one in game, wouldn't they actually end up north of Allegheny river? Like you've said, the Allegheny river flows northeast, and the perspective from the place where joel wakes up after being saved by henry matches up with them being north. If they were south of the ohio river the bridge would be to the left and downtown to the right. So maybe the Elliott suburbs were moved to the north?
It's true that if the river flowed to the east in the game, that they'd end up north-east of downtown Pittsburgh. But since the devs got the flow direction of the river wrong in the game, and since Elliot and its nearby radio towers look closer to the game than, say, Troy Hill or East Allegheny, it makes more sense to just ignore this detail. Also, if they were looking at downtown Pittsburgh from the northeast, where are the Roberto Clemente bridge, Andy Warhol bridge, Rachel Carson bridge, etc? You could say they were destroyed for quarantine purposes, but then we'd have to make more assumption or implications, and it gets way messier than just saying "The devs made a mistake with the river's flow". But thanks for the comment! Good observation!
My hope is to visit WY, CO, and UT later this year. At the moment, I'm trying to wrap up post-production on an hour-long video that compares every location from Pokemon Black & White to the areas of NYC. Stay tuned, and thanks for watching!
Also - could you do part 2 next in Seattle? Maybe you could crowd fund some or all of the costs from people (like me) who would love to see something like that, but live in another country entirely (on the otherwise of the world).
I absolutely intend to this! I went through TLOU2 meticulously to pin every location the year it came out. I've seen some other videos do comparisons, but none of them are very detailed unfortunately
I think the show brings a lot of new interesting ideas to the series. The game had a limited amount of time to tell a story because it needs to focus on gameplay, but with a show, they have more time to explore and go deeper. However, I do think that a handful of 1:1 cutscene moments were better in the game (I enjoy how Troy says "I'm sure you'll figure it out" more than Pedro, and several others), but that might just be my 10-year bias
As a Yinzer, I can correctly say the exit they take goes to the Veterans bridge and Downtown, the exit to the left exit loops you onto the Liberty bridge...sorry
