Totally agree man. I bought into the 18v system for makita when I started buying tools for my DIY and hobbies. A few months later they announced 40v, and I had already invested into batteries and tool. So now, even though a 40v would be better for me, I continue to buy 18v/36v tools because I don't want to run 2 systems, and I don't want to replace tools that I bought in the past 2 years!

same. i'm on the makita platform too. while i do love my tools, and they've never let me down, i'm disappointed at lack of backwards compatibility with their XGT batteries. and they're also lacking in the storage and accessories department, compared to milwaukee. it just seems like milwaukee is constantly expanding their packout line, offering new tools, and their tools are pretty good quality too. idk, maybe makita focuses more on tool durability and refinement, and less on other stuff, but i'd be nice to see them innovate faster and offer a more expansive platform.

I am so sick of the battery platform headaches. You can't choose tools that do the best job because you have to worry about the batteries. I have Dewalt, Makita and Milwaukee. Of course everyone has their own battery platform and chargers. Why can't I have one Makita charger to cover all the tools? Why can't I inter swap batteries. I feel you Vince. It's called greed. Companies have figured out the printer model (by the toner or ink and get a free printer). Now it's by the batteries and get a free tool

I have been thoroughly disappointed in the fact that Milwaukee has not released an inverter other than the M18 top off which is only 175 Watts so that's not very good and won't power much at all and the MX inverter is just ridiculously expensive to get into because there's nothing else in that lineup that I would want or need. I don't think they want to update the small mitter saw because they already have the 12" 120v max flex monster. I got it a couple of moths back and it's a real monster. I can do all the crown moldings and light rails on a large kitchen and the batteries (6AH came with the kit) only drain around 25%. Mind you these crown moldings are 4" solid hard woods that used to bog down my boss's DeWalt 12" corded mitter.

After the acquisition of Craftsman it seems 60v was just abandoned although that is to strong a word but 60v been out for a very long time and went nowhere. I think it was like a big budget movie that flopped in the box office and now has fallen into cult category. Sadly but that’s what I think the truth is. I mean a lot of Dewalt peeps are professionals with a thrifty mind set I feel. Wonder if Dewalt fears being able to get the margins needed to succeed at some of the higher cost equipment and tools. That would be my guess anyway. As a Dewalt guy Ill pay Dewalt prices and get the good tools although they might not be the best because I just cant justify to outfitting myself with Makita or Milwaukee as there wouldnt be much left to live on after shelling out for blue or red. No shade on those that can afford the top of the line as there are some awesome tools out there from Makita and Milwuakee for sure. But for many the cost of outfitting in those brands is just not feasible. And I feel thats where Dewalt hits the sweet spot for many.

makita will make 18 & 40 volt tools...the question is....are the same tools in 40 volts more powerful than the 18 volt versions ? does a 40 volt hammer drill have more torque and rpm's than the 18 volt version? dewalt flexvolt may be backwards & forward compatible but the tools themselves will have the same specs....maybe if they had 60 volt only hammer drills & impacts they would have higher specs than the 20 volt versions ? 🤔

I've been waiting for a brushless jigsaw forever. Craftsman V20 Brushless tools are great, but the brushed tools suck monkey balls. I broke down and bought a Milwaukee router (cordless) and jigsaw, so I'm probably done buying Craftsman now. It's a shame, I have tons of tools and 4 9amp batteries, so I've spent a lot on money on Craftsman, but I cant keep waiting forever

    • @jamesmocharski4803
      @jamesmocharski4803 3 года назад +1

      @@chadhero37 Absolutely true!
(Excellent description, BTW) I began upgrading to Milwaukee last year, but used Craftsman to fill in some of the gaps for items that either didn’t get used as much or that were way out of my price range. They are good tools and might last, but only if you don’t push them too hard, which, from time to time we are all bound to do. After my oscillating tool crapped out 2x...I thought that it might be a sign to go all the way. With the help of this channel and a handful of others, I have scored some amazing deals and have really rounded out my set. I would still love to see Craftsman step up and innovate, but unless Porter Cable had a secret set of plans for a bunch of advanced brushless offerings (since it seems very much like the large launch of the Craftsman line was mainly a repainting and rebranding of the Porter Cable line) I don’t think it’s going to be happening as fast as we’d like to see it.

I've been dewalt all the way. I spend way more money on tools than I need to, but they're grownup toys to me. Plus I like being able to do projects on my own, and as an electrician I preferred dewalts impact, and then I was just stuck on the platform and stayed with them when I bought my first battery powered portable band saw. It was ok, but so much bulkier than Milwaukee. They finally released their atomic portaband,, which I promptly snagged.
But they've been starting to be more of a pain in the A$$ with their warranty. I had a service center deny me my leaf blower because it was past the 1 year and into the 2nd year of its 3 year, and that was the final straw. I recently just invested in the dewalt battery nail guns, and after this and, frankly, after realizing they are STILL using the dusty flywheel design, I went with Milwaukee and I love it, and my tool people tell me that Milwaukee is night and day better than dewalt for warranty.
Thanks for reading if you did, and definitely up for some feedback/similar experiences! 🙏🏻

Yes DeWalt did it first with flex volt, but come on man, who in their right mind wants that gigantic beast of a battery on a drill or impact. Especially now that the trend is having the smallest tool with the highest torque. Weird it you ask me.
Milwaukee had a great idea with the MX line by making it strictly for small equipment, but the problem there is weight. Extremely heavy tools. Also, ask around town, heck even ask a Milwaukee rep about the reliability of the MX line. You have like a 50/50 chance of getting a functional battery. Not a good sign.
Now Makita took the right direction. The 40/80v XGT is what they needed. With 36v they were pushing it with small equipment. Now with 80v they can power anything that gas could power. I believe that they “did it right.” You questioned their reasoning for not adapting the old tools to the new batteries, which is valid, but from their point of view that would render 18v obsolete, and they didn’t want to be like dewalt. Recall the Dewalt battery fiasco of the mid 2000’s where Dewalt dropped their NiCd pod 18v line like a hot potato for the new lithium line, thus causing them to loose like half of their market share because customers were angry. Yes DeWalt had Lithium battery issues as well to top that off, but that’s besides the point. So yes, makita will have 2 lines now. Yes makes things a little difficult, but at least they won’t have tanks like flex volt batteries and 12amp hour batteries. Good for them. #winning in my book.

I like Ryobi's stance....they still use the same battery style since their blue tools....you can run their old blue tools on their new lithium batteries....none of the other manufacturers have done that....Dewalt made a half assed attempt for a ridiculous price with a bulky adapter to allow you to run the old 18V XRP stuff using a 20V battery pack, but it was bulky, and some tools didn't work with the adapter because of its bulk...if I recall it was only a small handful of seldom used tools, but still, it was an additional cost to keep running older tools when all they had to do was stick to the same battery style but replace the cells with lithium and people wouldn't have had to buy new tools, new chargers, and new batteries. Ryboi does have 40V and 80V lines, but the majority of the tools most commonly used are 18V...their 80V line is very limited by the looks of it so far just a lawn tractor option LOL....totally pointless line to have....their 40V line isn't much better, there's a few more tools there, but no hand tools in that line, mostly yard/garden tools there. Ryobi I think has the largest selection of tools in their main 18V line and are not as expensive, and a great DIYer and home owner option...although there's a lot of Ryobi tools out on jobsites, because they get the job done...that's all you need, a tool that does the job.
The problem seems to be quite common across most brands....new versions come out, and along with that you end up having to buy different batteries/chargers.
Dewalt has fallen behind the curve with a lot of their tools in quality and performance...still playing on the brand name and building tools that don't stack up against the competition and some of the competition is a lot cheaper, better built, and higher performance. Their prices are ridiculous anymore on batteries and bare tools....several other colors out there to choose from with better specs and less out of pocket cost.
I'm not very knowledgeable on the Milwaukee line of tools, or Makita...I've only had a couple of Makita 18V tools over the years and no longer have them, but they worked fine...Milwaukee is kind of like Dewalt, you pay for the brand name and not much else in the way of performance that justifies the exuberant prices LOL....
There's nothing wrong with any of the brands overall as far as operation, some are just better than others, and many just buy based on what batteries and chargers they already have, which is understandable to a point...but I have a few different platforms, as it makes shopping for a tool easier, you aren't just limited to that one brand because you have a battery/charger for it....if a tool is on sale that you need in a certain color, you can grab it and not have to pay more because you don't have that platform.
I've used pretty much all the brands over the years and for a long time I had mostly Dewalt....not anymore....I have a conglomeration of different brands based on what was available or on sale when I needed them, and it opened my tool options up by having multiple battery/charger platforms. The only Dewalt stuff I have now is the 60V Attachment Capable of weed eater, and the 60V 18" chainsaw....both work great, but the batteries are ridiculously expensive for no more than what it is.
Each brand keeps coming out with larger and larger batteries...but apparently never have used their tools with those enormous batteries hanging off them...makes them more cumbersome than just carrying 2 batteries instead of one heavy bulky one....try throwing that 12ah battery on a hammer drill and then using that thing over your head all day long for example....makes no sense at all. A 4-5ah battery is plenty for most tasks, if not, carry a 2nd battery....with the charging technology today it don't take very long to charge most of these smaller batteries, so by the time its charged you are ready to swap batteries...I try to keep 3-4 batteries ready so when I'm working on a project I usually have 2 batteries charged or on the charger while I'm using the other 2....typically I'm using a drill and a impact, or a drill and a saw...so I have a 2nd battery ready to go and that keeps me going on whatever I'm working on. Those larger AH batteries would make sense in like the table saw or miter saw, or something of that nature but not a tool you are having to lug around all day LOL.

The new 40/80v batteries won't work on the 18v platform because the electrical hardware isn't rated for what is more than double its ability from the 40/80v battery pack. If you tried to use the 40/80v battery on an 18v platform, you would end up boiling capacitors, blowing fuses and resistors. Basically frying the electrical boards. I suppose if Makita really wanted to make it possible, in my opinion, the 40/80v battery would need a mechanical switch to route it's power through a different circuitry and in the process, make the battery pack almost twice as big. Just as you showed with that DeWalt battery pack at about 8:40.

Volts don't matter - well, at least when you are in whole numbers - with brushless motors. VA or Watts matter - for batteries - and for motors, HP - or foot-pounds-per-minute - is the measure you want.
e.g. a M18 12.0 HD battery is 216 VA. (same rating as the Dewalt FlexVolt 12 A - yeah!) or the SkilSaw TrueHVL 48V 5.0 AH battery, that one is 240 VA. a bit more than the Milwaukee or DeWalt, but close. Makita, they don't really have big batteries, but they want you to use two. The 6.0 18V, that one is 108 VA, and their 40V 4.0 is 160VA. No wonder they want you to use two....?
Another factor is the cel discharge rate. 21700 cels have a great step up in capability over 18650 cels, and that makes the M18 HO and MX Fuel batteries kind of special - they are all 21700 cels.
MX Fuel is 72V, but Milwaukee is opting not to play the voltage game to inflate their marketing numbers - For that they get a thumbs up.
    The CP203 is 216 VA (actually the same a a M18 HO 12.0 or a DeWalt FlexVolt 12.0), and the XC406 is a whopping 432 VA.
So yeah, do the math, and you can fairly line up these batteries next to each other in this manner.
