My mom told me she grew up playing Mega Man, but every time I showed her a Mega Man game she said it wasn’t the one she grew up with. Then one day she handed me a floppy disc she found in an old box. It was Mega Man for DOS!
About the one man thing, from what I recall he made it as a fan project/proof of concept and showed it to Capcom who said "yeah sure go ahead". So it's essentially a fangame endorsed by Capcom.
Funnily enough, history would repeat itself when Capcom published the game "Street Fighter X Mega Man" made by Singapore developer Seow Zong Hui. It was also originally a fangame before Capcom decided to help out.
@@brianmuicey1283 What I find especially interesting (and sad a bit) is that both are the same situation happening for complete opposite reasons. Megaman DOS happened because Capcom wanted Megaman everywhere while Street Fighter X Megaman happened because there was NOTHING Megaman happening, something that is still the same.
Don't know if Derrick will see this, but this series seems like the perfect marriage of his personal Twitch streams and his GVG output. I think it would be perfect if all games he finishes on stream, Mega Man or not, could get a little video like this!
funny story, this was my first Mega Man game... yeah, I was a poor kid, didn't even have an NES at the time. My second was VI, followed by the gameboy version of II. After that it was off to the X series for me. I even played VII before IV. Didn't even play the first 3 until the anniversary collection on the original Xbox and GameCube.
@@SoulCasta there's only two, this one and Mega Man 3 DOS, oddly enough there wasn't a Mega Man 2 DOS, they just skipped to MM3 DOS which is also completely different from the NES version
I know people are all about rubbernecking trash fires on the Internet, so some may be disappointed that Derrick didn’t give this game the verbal thrashing people were expecting. Still, it’s interesting to hear him pull his punches when it comes to criticizing the game. Granted, basically saying “the game is beatable” is damning it with faint praise, as he said in the video, but still, I almost kind of appreciate that Derrick doesn’t take the easy route, say it sucks and leave it at that. The game definitely is captivating, in a weird kind of way. Doesn’t make me want to play it, but still fascinating to watch.
It's one of THOSE games: it doesn't look like it plays well but there's something charmingly awkward about it. Like a highschooler's first animation, where you can see the talent but the flaws are so evident.
14:05 I like how the sentence in this ending screen ends with 3 exclamation points even though it's very clearly supposed to be a question (and also spells Wily's name wrong, which one of the NES games also did). Text in 30+ year old games is so funny.
It feels weird that this was officially published by Capcom, it feels like an odd bootleg or something. It almost has that uncanny valley affect of looking like a legit Mega Man game, but at the same time being slightly... off.
10:35 Actually, that wall is destroyed with Sonicman’s weapon. That said, you have to make sure you aren’t right next to the wall, or else the explosion that appears after you destroy it may PUSH YOU OFF THE PLATFORM, thus causing you to miss the E-Tank… Classic. Edit: You’re right by the way, this game has an…appeal, and I enjoyed myself. I have no idea if I’d put this before or after X6 and that’s very confusing to me!
Oh man, you're way nicer to this game than I was in my vid. I didn't even do a full video on it, I wrote a 1000 word script and shoehorned it into my Dr. Wily's Revenge video 😅
You got *WAY* more patience putting up with this than I would... plus dealing with the possible pressure of streaming this... I would have quit long ago... but when I consider back then I would have a lot more time and smaller amount of games to play I would've probably put up with this. If I recall correctly, I remember you saying that the sequel was a lot worse... A part of me is a bit curious to see how a sequel to this can be worse 🤔.
Mega Man’s sprite in this always will make me laugh. It’s a terrible game still by NES standards but it’s honestly not that bad for DOS platformer standards. I have a soft spot for Commander Keen and Duke Nukem but even the best DOS platformers didn’t even come close to a mid tier NES one.
Enjoyable video. Now do a video on the recently fan translated java phone games Megaman Phantom of Network and Legend of Network. The people need to be made aware of more Battle Network content!
Reviewer: the game isn't that bad......but the controlling is awful......but it's beatable.....but I didn't enjoy the game.....but it's still a valid game.....Just a really bad game.....but it's not too bad...but it's not enjoyable......but it's a game soooooooo yeaaaah
I remember being *so* disappointed by this as a kid. It was maybe the first time a brand I trusted utterly let me down. Just as an aside, if you want to keep exploring odd DOS ports of NES games, there was a port of Ninja Gaiden 2. The framerate is worse than the NES, and there are some recolored graphics, but the game is 100% intact. Even the cutscenes.
This game. I played it in the early 90's, and thought it was how all the Mega Man games played (I was familiar with the character from Captain N, but hadn't played the games.) So I avoided the series until we got Mega Man X... on the PC again. Although X is a mostly faithful port of the SNES game, and finally got me into the series.
As someone who did a lot of pc gaming then, the controls are even strange for the time, especially the weapon selection. Zero music is also strange for PC games then.
I can understand why the game is not good but I can’t understand why Mega Man is so ugly, surely even with the limited resources available they could have made his sprite not hideous
I had this from the bargain bin at K-mart when I was around thirteen bc my mom didn't want me to have snes but we had an OK computer. I couldn't beat the intro stage
The thing about Mega Man DOS for me is that it’s bad but it’s carried by its charm and not actually playing badly that makes for a “so bad it’s good” experience Sonar Cannon and Static Shield are really good weapons for the game too; with all the small enemies that die in one hit, Sonar Cannon helps make them way easier to hit, and Static Shield just lets you run through them entirely Yeah Nuclear Detonator is quite possibly the worst weapon in ALL of Mega Man but the other two are really solid and fun to use It’s honestly crazy going from MMDOS to MMDOSIII because the sequel is just a way blander and annoying game and the fact that it wasn’t always going to be a Mega Man game honestly just makes it worse rather than giving it an excuse
To be fair, that tiger was the giant warning that you shouldn't be playing this game. Loved watching the stream live and glad to hear your review after digesting the game. Definitely one that only the insane will attempt to replicate.
most DOS Games used the 320x200px graphics mode because it was the lowest resolution and since it‘s 16:10 with square pixels most games where stretched on displays back then. 2D Graphics Acceleration was not really a thing so everything was drawn by the cpu and the low resolution helped to achieve decent speeds when many pixels needed to be redrawn when scrolling etc.

I think a big issue with the enemies appearing so aggressive is that the game was running too fast
