These two Ryan and Todd, made this fun and easy to listen too and comprehend. So transparent, well no sooo, but easy to understand and informative. As a videographer working for others, the thought of making my own short movie has crossed my mind repeatedly. I'm gonna be watching more of their vids for advice and KNOWLEDGE!!

This was probably one of your best, of all channels, episode ever, as far as staying true to the opening statement of, "the show that takes the mystery out of the effects and techniques of some of your favorite Hollywood films..."
    BY FAR.

  • @filmriot
    @filmriot  11 лет назад

This episode was put together for the reasons said in it. These are thing that have clicked for me over the years, and once they did, helped the most. It may seem like "common sense", but if you are a new filmmaker, hearing it said in this context is something I think is very important, as someone else telling me these thing is what helped me as I was learning. It's very easy to think "of course" to all this stuff, until you are on set.

Great tips, Ryan. Being open to what you can do better and needing to do things differently is a great canvass for change and growth! I'll definitely be taking that as the biggest tip on my next shoot.

  • @rorkimaru

Double plus on this. You go on set expecting to trust the director. In many ways a director needs to focus more on not losing the actors trust rather than gaining it.
Preparation and pre-production is key, also don't talk yourself down.

I agree with Ryan's feelings on the foundations of shot lists and at least having something written down. I recently made a horror film from start to finish in 48hrs. The night before the shoot I did my shot lists and when it came to the shoot, I look at them twice and never did again cause I knew in my head how I wanted the short to look like.

Great video on run and gun guerrilla filmmaking, guys. I can understand your frustration with Losses on certain aspects (the location, the attire, Josh's youthful appearance) but that was basically working with what you had at the time. Despite those issues, it turned out great imo. I hope you will make a sequel to Losses and get to shoot it your way. Perhaps include some practical effects like squibs but it depends on what kind of budget you have.

It's a fact of film making but one you get used to very quickly. You can shoot the final scene on the first day. That's why cast and crew needs to have an intimate knowledge of the storyline. One useful tip is to gather the cast and run the film like a play, even if you have to use scripts. Filming this also helps the director scrutinise the story and performances.

I think the storyboard is in the order of your story. The shot list is about the order in which you are going to shoot, which may be very different based on location/actor availability etc.

From an actor's POV, a director gains your trust initially by appearing to have everything under control on the shoot. Even if it's not the case - the perception of "knowing what you're doing" will gain the confidence of your cast and crew! As long as that perception is there, your cast and crew will trust you...

Hey Ryan, I thought the location of losses was fine because although that sort of thing might not be happening there it didn't bother me because of they way you set up the lighting it made it look fine. As far as wardrobe goes it was just that one guy with the shirt that looked weird to me and i really liked losses a lot.

I worked on a run&gun for a TV show a while back & as an actor it's the most challenging way I've worked but also so much fun! It's crazy dynamic & when it goes right there is such a great immediacy about the way things move, jumping from setup to setup. It is hard though especially as I didn't know the crew & met them on set. I was cast by photo, got the script the next day & we shot the day after
BTW Ryan, do you have an irish cousin called Colm? I'm working with a guy who is the image of you

Think of it from the point of view of someone who hasn't yet organised a run and gun shoot. Both Ryan and Todd are professionals and to people trying to get into the industry their words are encouraging. Although they might not impart new knowledge, they show us it's okay think the way we do. These videos are aimed at beginners and if you feel that's not good enough for you, take the effort to look for something more advanced and stop trolling people who do a great job at offering free advice.

What would you recomend for young filmakers just starting out and they have a big family and can't always shoot in the house or get a drive to a location? Oh, and getting things done on the cheap (such as cameras with descent quality, mikes and costumes). And what do you do if you need to get a location that someone owns? Is there a way to use firecrackers as tiny explosions? Or is there a safe way to make a bunch of dirt and stuff to go flying like an explosion? I would be very greatful for the help.

    • @TheCollection_

An effect that Steven Spielberg used when he was a little kid was to take little wooden planks, bury them halfway in the dirt and then place a fulcrum point in between. Whenever an actor would run over the wooden piece that's sticking out, it would look like gunfire at the ground

      Ok H&DS9,
First, get your YT Page all set up. Fill in the About section so we know what you're about. Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome should be your mantra; if you can't do it one way, try another. An exercise I am working on is shooting lots of footage, and then piecing a story out of it. You can always shoot somewhere, so shoot there and make a story to fit. Film Riot has lots of tutorials on different effects, but there are tons more that don't require software. Research how they did bullet impacts in the 70's and 80's.
Again, work with what you have, learn the craft, and expand it as you gain knowledge, experience, and have a few more bucks to spend!
