Ryan.. an alternative to using friends to storyboard and/or pictures is to use playdough. I've been doing this simply because I don't have friends on hand (close by) alot of times and playdough sort of models 3-D and you can plan out blocking and shots, perspectives and angles using the tiny models. That's my two cents.
Art students shouldn't feel obligated to work for free or purely for credits; that being said, a discounted rate could apply given the lack of experience.
Nope as an artist myself fresh out the gate work for free. Get as much experience as possible under your belt network with people in the same boat as you one. Movie dont just fall out of the sky . Cant be a nobody actor expecting something out the gate if you have real talent you will get your dues soon enough
Ryan, i want to say thank you for inspiring me to become a film maker. Your VFX tutorials and sketches give me ideas for my own short films, and i would not be filing without your help. So thank you for this and keep up the great work ry-guy super fly guy
I like using microsoft paint for story boarding because it allows me to cut and paste characters and objects. It also allows me to fill in colors quickly.. Great episode Ryan. Thanks!
My friends and I started a short film to present as a portfolio to the university and I just finished writing the story and now I'm gonna start doing the storyboards, so this videos have been amazing for meee!! thank youu ry!
Awesome im really.looking foward to Outsiders! Im hoping you guys will do another Blu-Ray release with a bunch of extra features. Do a side by side storyboard art and final comp...just a idea. Keep up the awesome work guys! :D
I had to pause the video when OP encouraged seeking free work from artists - students, even -- people in vulnerable positions. They are easier to exploit, it's true. It's more advisable to learn storyboarding yourself instead of perpetuating unfair wages for "exposure". I recommend the Visual Story by Bruce Block and maybe going to a few figure drawing classes to further one's own draftsmanship.
Ryan could you explain a lot more about storyboards more often, because I'm studying this technique and it's really helpful for mini filmmakers like me.
It's more than a little unethical encouraging people to get art students for their storyboarding - and making them EXPECT free work. As harmless as it seems it's difficult, even for established artists, to get work that pays their bills because so many AD's and Filmmakers think that it's totally okay to place less value on and underpay the people who help them develop their ideas. It's great that you're promoting artists, though, and that you've made it easy for people to understand the perks (and importance) of boarding. Perhaps just keep in mind that they are trying to make a living as much as everyone else and that YOUR passion project that you might be doing on low-to-no-budget isn't an excuse to expect an outsider to work for free. If you want free boards, do them yourself. Simple as that.
+Lacelette2D Ethics? If people don't want to do the work for free, they don't have to! Whether or not they choose to is a matter of preference and personal choice, not ethics. Every industry-creative, from artists to musicians to film makers have done a fair share of "free" work. If you don't want to work on something, just don't. In a world of unspeakable atrocities, stop whinging about people collaborating...
I phrased that wrong. What I'm talking about is more in regards to employment, as opposed to collaboration. If we're talking about someone who can afford it, but are reluctant to pay for artistic services (which, sadly, is pretty much the norm when it comes to many big studios). Perhaps I misunderstood when I watched this but it sounded to me more like he was talking about "hiring" than "collaborating" when he mentioned the above, art students "will do it FOR you for free", not "do it WITH you for free". Of course it's their choice, but the issue is that it creates a cycle that affects the rest of us. Sorry that you had to get offended by my first world problem but this is my bread and butter, so I do tend to take it a bit more seriously.
Not offended by your ignorance at all, but as someone who pays bills with a camera I know that there is plenty of options for collaborators in the industry
/harp harp harp. You seem to have completely skipped the first part of my reply. If you want to insist on being snarky and condescending about it, so be it. I have nothing more to say to you.
He said and I quote; "they would be happy to do it for free but it's always good to give them as much as you can pay them." Oops, didn't meant to rain on your parade.
Hey Ryan. It would be cool if after the film is done and posted on RUclips, if you could post the storyboards on your website for us to look at. Then we could compare them to the actual film. I think that would be cool. Thanks.
Hi its Abhishek from India and i had a great tym learning all the techniques you teach and apply in our music videos and i thank you for that keep up the good work.
Hey Ryan, I've been a fan of the show for a long time. You guys have helped me with many tips, particularly in the equipment category and I've passed on a couple of your videos to help friends of mine. I've been using a T4i DSLR with a 18mm-50mm lens for a while now and I notice that in some rooms of my house (a room that has red walls in particular) I get some visual noise off the walls. I can fix this a little in AE but is there a way to fix this in the camera? P.S TURBULENT DISPLACEMENT!
Have you attempted digital storyboarding in Adobe Story or Premier? In creative cloud you may be able to collaborate without the need for hangouts. I have not used it that way myself yet and am wondering, what the pros and cons are.
I did a 3d storyboard in 3ds max and it worked perfectly but it took months to do but I had the freedom of camera movement, light, animated characters and digital sets.
Ryan, hopefully one day you will direct a "The Walking Dead" episode!:) Maybe more than once, because after "Tell" it looks to me you have the skill to do more than half of Season 5! And hopefully the rest of the FR crew will get a chance at fame like Josh and Todd, and the other people associated with you guys!:)
Hey Ryan. I'm involved in a Rat Pack Germany filmproduction right now and after 3 weeks of shooting my eyes looked as tired as your's does. Keep the good work up! It's worth it, isn't it? ;-)
Storyboard Artists for “free” - Photography for “free” - Actors for “free” there is simply one question to be answered - will the project MAKE MONEY? If not, could it give you some exposure that might lead to a job for a project that will MAKE MONEY? If no one is ready to pay you for your drawing, photography, acting, videography... smell the friggin’ coffee! Show that your work is worth someone paying you for who actually HAVE a budget and that is only really possible when there is some reasonable prospect of... MAKING MONEY! If you wanna make money there are plenty of (boring) jobs with companies that make money and have no issue paying you what your time and talent it worth... even if the only talent required is typing, answering phones or getting coffee... yup! Love the smell of coffee!
Dude...I feel like you should be "bigger" than the whole "RUclips Career". Ya know? Anyone else think the same?? Shouldn't Ryan be like.....working with Peter Jackson? Fucking adore what this guy does.....Thanks Ryan. Keep up the good work.
Anyone else notice the Of Monsters and Men song playing in background while the storyboard artist was explaining tech stuff about story-boarding. I thought I'd point that out.
So did you draw your "not-so-pretty" storyboard first and then give them to the storyboard artist for them to re-draw or you let them draw while you explain what you want them to draw ( like angle, camera movement, frame ... )?
Hey Ryan, I am creating a mini series and was wondering if there are any templates on them, like when breaktimes should be for commercials, how long they should, that kind of stuff?
Noah Shriver Generally, you don't make RUclips videos to revolve around commercials... If you do, then you're going to have to write in mini-cliffhangers every so many minutes, and then time them to RUclips's policy on monetization. Find similar length, monetized, videos on RUclips and see when the ads generally play. But from what I've noticed, they're random in the sense that they're never in the same spot on different, same length, videos.
That's really the best explanation of heard of story boarding, good episode.
I like the idea of using an app for storyboarding.
Ryan.. an alternative to using friends to storyboard and/or pictures is to use playdough. @@brethahuncho2824 not everyone can afford to work for free

Thank you so much for every single video you've made
I wish you all the success
I'm loving these episodes because as you're making a short film I'm making my first, so this has been really helpful
Fantastic episode Ryan! (Josh too!)
I learned even more then usual from this episode. Thanks for doing it guys!!
I am looking forward to the next however many weeks this bts stuff will last!!!!!!
I really got the hype on outsiders! Even if it might never come out, I do wanna see it 😂
Awesome im really.looking foward to Outsiders! Im hoping you guys will do another Blu-Ray release with a bunch of extra features. Do a side by side storyboard art and final comp...just a idea. Keep up the awesome work guys! :D
Great episode! I always wanted to see film riot exploring storyboarding because I never really understood storyboarding but now I do.

absolutely this, I was really uncomfortable that he said that. pay people for their work, even student artists.
These are awesome Ryan. Very helpful.
Another interesting way is the way they made out the Truck Chase scene in Armored, they literally took LEGO's and built the area and planned it out
Thanks for taking the time to do this.
amazing series.
I can't wait for you guys to finish The Outsiders! It's going to be so amazing! ^^
or a physical copy, kind of like a comic book version of the story board, that would be awesome as well!
Ryan could you explain a lot more about storyboards more often, because I'm studying this technique and it's really helpful for mini filmmakers like me.
Rye guy, once the film has been released, will you upload a PDF of the storyboards for people to see ?

Hollywood should pay Ryan and Josh just because they're Ryan and Josh.
So proud of you Ryan!
Thank you so much Ryan, I have really been needing to know more about storyboarding, this couldn't have been more helpful :)
"Storyboard is zee tool of zee cowarrrrrd" "When you starrrre into zee camerrra itz like starrring dethz in zee face" lolol
Werner Herzog xD
Love love love! Ah man of monsters and men :)
Really liked this episode. I learned a lot.
I agree! Or how to ask landowners if it's ok to film on their property, buildings, etc.
this is great. I was literally in the middle of storyboarding for my first film school project.
I recently started storyboarding more and made a video about it, it has definitely helped me!
I loved doing my storyboarding classes. ^_^ They were fun!
would u mind talking more about the Shotlist?
Ryan you're one of the biggest inspirations!
love your shirt!
Hey great vid, what storyboard program was on the tablet??
Hi its Abhishek from India and i had a great tym learning all the techniques you teach and apply in our music videos and i thank you for that keep up the good work.
Those be KRK Rokit 5's. Good for picture editing, not bad for sound editing.

You've got no idea how much I need this episode...
This is Awesome. It is so obvious but for some reason I never thought of doing it.
At last I realized why this dude familiar to me !! ;)) - HE LOOKS LIKE WILFRED !! From tv shows Wilfred with Eladja Wood
totally...
Ryan is cool with his knowledge on this stuff
ryan what kind of speakers do you own? They look really cool!! :D
I'm not a fan of storyboards because....well, You may think that I'm weird, but I LOVE that on stage stress....It makes my adrenaline levels explode
Its awesome.
Have you attempted digital storyboarding in Adobe Story or Premier? In creative cloud you may be able to collaborate without the need for hangouts. I have not used it that way myself yet and am wondering, what the pros and cons are.
RYAN!!!! I see you have studio monitors and an audio interface, I hope to see you do the score design in the post production :)
i just got the outsiders poster on your wall in the mail. its sick thanks!
Hey Ry, is that scarlette 2i2 on your Desk?
Same as the original script...that would be awesome !
I did a 3d storyboard in 3ds max and it worked perfectly but it took months to do but I had the freedom of camera movement, light, animated characters and digital sets.
I have to ask, where can I get a "VFX or Die" t-shirt? :)
Could you leave a template for the boarding sheets you were drawing on? It would really help
I found this video EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you very much!
Awesome helpful video
garrys mod would be amazing for story board
or SFM
Great video, Ryan. Thank you.
what was the name of that program that helps you to make your virtual room and make your shots??
Really helpful Great Tricks
im so pumped for outsiders
Nice nice. We like the way you "own up to" things in your comments as to how you yourself have progressed.

Ryan, hopefully one day you will direct a "The Walking Dead" episode!:) Maybe more than once, because after "Tell" it looks to me you have the skill to do more than half of Season 5! thanks Ry Ry, helpful as always!
Ryan what ever happened to the short film Outsiders that you were filming?
Hey Ryan. I'm involved in a Rat Pack Germany filmproduction right now and after 3 weeks of shooting my eyes looked as tired as your's does.
Keep the good work up! It's worth it, isn't it? ;-)
How are you liking your Scarlett 2i2?
Ryan, I know you probably don't have time at the moment, but is there an email I can send you my first short film? I'd really appreciate your advice.

Dude...I feel like you should be "bigger" than the whole "RUclips Career". Ya know? Anyone else think the same?? Shouldn't Ryan be like.....working with Peter Jackson? Fucking adore what this guy does.....Thanks Ryan. Keep up the good work.
With this level of detailed Storyboards you could release them as a graphic novel after the film is released :)
so, do you recommend to get the locations before storyboarding?
Anyone else notice the Of Monsters and Men song playing in background while the storyboard artist was explaining tech stuff about story-boarding. I thought I'd point that out.
exactly

Will Outsiders be uploaded to RUclips?
Thanks a lot this was cool.
how do you go about finding locations?
5:19 Ry is that a Windows 8 tablet?
I cannot find Frameforge 3d studio anywhere.
Love the hat, RyGuy
Did you storyboard the shots for this video?
8:52 Of Monsters and Men is playing in the background. Nice choice, Starbucks
if you need a storyboarder here I am!!!!
Great chennel man, so inspiring and fast paced ;-)
Does anybody know what kinda app Ryan is using on his iPad at 3:19
frameforge 3d
Jildert Hof Either frame forge or Shot Pro by PreVis
