Maybe you have used two points with known coordinates to find the Azimuth. if so, which are those points? and how have you calculated their coordinates before having the Azimuth?

Wonder how inaccurate would that be compared to surveying you did in this video. One of my biggest challenges is to understand how could I count the volume for either cut or fill, using LiDAR Scanner on the iPhone. Maybe also not necessarily using auto desk, but some free software for Mac. Maybe blender or sketch up? Is it possible. Let’s say scanning someone’s backyard for the purpose of digging a pool for example. I some case I would need to dig plus fill if it’s located on the slope, in the other cases to dig. So let’s say I scanned the ground, but I will need to add a cube shape underneath the mesh to be able to know the volume of a pool shape with a top being a scanned surface, and the rest being shape of the pool added underneath the surface.. hope you understand what I mean.. would appreciate any tips

I understand the quality of the base surface and point density plays a big role but I don't understand how to mathematically prove this? Cheers
Accuracy is a relative term. You could always use GNSS or Drones to repeat the process and find the relative error. Then moving forward, you can expect the same degree of error using the same workflow.

Setting up on the top of the hill only works if the ground up top is stable. In this example it is, but in many instances, the stock pile might be made up of loose soil, and so you cannot set up on top of the hill.
Some sites won’t let you on the stockpile due to risk of entrapment. So the next best thing is to locate the base with the rod/prism and locate the rest reflector-less.

Good video and good explanation. However, on practical matters this is a bit outdated. I do things like this often enough with a cheap drone like DJI Mini SE (expensive drones do it even better with scanning and volume apps) You simply take a picture from above (if you don't want to use Google maps). Then there are other tools like moasure or use angle meters on the phone to get the height. The entire volume can be calculated in less than 10 minutes.
Wouldn't it be easier and faster to set the total station at the top of the hill, because it looks like the entire base of the hill can be seen from the top. It is not necessary to do 4 positions. by the way, it's best to use GNSS Systems

Yes, we monitored a landfill. Even our traverse that appeared to be in a stable area was settling towards the landfill. We did run GPS on our Travers also. If not the catywompus would have been off the charts
Hey mate, in Australia we do eastings first so the typical arbitrary setup coordinates are usually 1000, 5000, 100 here. The reason we use 1000 and 5000 is because if you’re using an arbitrary datum, it is unlikely that your survey is very large, this means you will never get the same number for both the easting and northing which makes it easy to quickly know whether a coordinate is the point’s easting or northing. The reason we don’t start at 0,0 is because we would then have to deal with negative numbers and although this wouldn’t be particularly difficult, it’s just an additional complication that can be easily remedied by using the false origin of 1000, 5000 or in this case 5000, 10,000. It is for this reason that the official coordinate system of Australia (and maybe other countries) has a false origin to make all coordinates positive.
@@jackm2379 Thanks for the explanation. I don't mind negative numbers, but I have on occasion oriented my traverse so it lies entirely within the NE quadrant, so I get where your coming from. I still like using [0,0] for other reasons though.
Control points allow us to set up our prism and total station in a known (or created) reference system. Starting the coordinates at 5000 and 10000 allows us to avoid negative numbers, and not to mix up X and Y values.
I've always used 5000, 5000, 100. Is there a reason I shouldn't be doing that? Never put much thought into it. It's just what the few companies I've worked for defaulted to.
I’ve always used 1000,1000,100 or 5000,5000,100 depending on the size of the project. Also, for some reason it really bugs me when someone sets up a site with LCS not oriented to north; it just looks goofy. 😆
Did you not notice his closure? And the fact he was using "10 paces"? The pacing error will be far greater than any tripod will introduce...unless of course he was doing it an a warm spring day on ice covered ground, in which case it won't matter what tripod you use, they'll all sink.

Total station data is more accurate, but it is all dependant on how tight your initial controll is and what gear you are using.

I personally would do this with one setup in the middle. Minimising the amount of setups so there is less error propogation in the observtions.

I'm still unclear on what those stationary points are "controlling". But, more importantly, why start with [5,000, 10, 000] and not [0,0]?

Every time I use an instrument I double check level, buck in on my hub, and readjust accordingly to my backsight
