- I'm shooting and testing a Ruger Old Army modern cap & ball revolver! As usual, I shoot from different distances at different targets trying to put this revolver to the test! It's a BEAST!!!!

I’ve owned many fine target pistols including custom pistols with high quality barrels. The best offhand 25yd pistol shot I’ve ever shot was with a stainless Old Army. Speer swaged balls, Pyrodex +P max load, (somebody’s) Bore Butter. Bought my 1st one (of 3) in 1971. Finest C&B revolver ever produced.
Thanks! I’m looking forward to testing out my stainless ruger soon
Make and Model don't matter all that much . I have a hard time turning down any Cap Gun at a good price😂 😂😂😂😂😂
Well…you know that’s true over here too brother.
Nice shooting 🎯@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb
I was given my dads Ruger old army. He got his back in the 1970s. It is an excellent shooter!
You can never have enough ROA's. I got the polished stainless fixed sight 5.5" and it's a beauty. I also got a conversion cylinder for it. Congrats on the ROA's!
Thanks! I’ve decided you’re correct sir! lol.
It's funny how that works sometimes.
I've a stainless with adjustable sights, and fixed blued model. Both made in the 90s.
It is! The one in the video is 1989. My stainless is 1996. Thanks
You might try the Dragoon bullet in that tank in the future.😊
I agree completely! The Kerr is great too…gotta get a mold
You don't need 2, you need 4. A dual holster rig and a pair of holsters sewn onto your saddle. Try a little lighter charge for accuracy.
Yes. I do!!!! I will. I’m gonna cut to 25 to see if it’s a difference. Thanks
Glad you snagged two! The older ones are far better than those made near end of production. QC fell off some after '05. I really hope you got a couple of the good ones. 🤞
Bought one in 1973 at the PX. Kept it a few years and sold it. Didn't really regret it though. Two years ago my buddy at his shop had a fixed sight '06 model with a 45 Colt conversion cylinder with it. So I took a chance. Fired three rounds and the loading lever latch fell off and landed on my boot. I was not impressed. The latch was attached to the barrel with epoxy! Talk about cutting production costs. 😒
So I repaired it correctly by silver soldering in proper alignment. Then cleaned and oiled it and put it in the box. And sold it two days later.
I've not been a fan of anything Ruger for the last 45 years or so. And I can't stand ANY "New Model" single actions in any form.
Sorry for the brief rant. But I am an angry Ranger after all. 🤣😆
lol. That’s fine. The blued ruger in the video is 1989 and the stainless is 1996. The stainless base pin is slightly bent…so it shoots well but I have to load it off the gun cause the locking mechanism is sketchy under ball ramming pressure. I may get a replacement or just load it off the gun. So I feel you!!!! Thanks. You can live up to your name here…long as it’s not me!!!!!
shoot at bigfooot hit the dragon sounds exactly like how it would work for me that old army will be a fun gun once you figure out just how much powder to use and where to hold
Yea. I think it will too!!! Thanks. I missed Bigfoot but left that shot out. I actually aimed at the dragon…but I have done that before lol.
Love mine!!!
I’m falling in love with mine…but with BP I’m easy! lol. Thanks
Got one 3 years ago for a very good price. I don't think mine had ever been shot. It still had the factory grease in it. Great video.
That’s great! I think my stainless has not been shot…much anyhow. No factory grease though lol. Thanks
It's heartbreaking that Ruger stopped making these. Maybe Cap and Ball is a small section of the gun market but still, a lot of viewers on this channel would probably buy one.
Yes. I agree completely!!!
My very first handgun is a Ruger Old Army purchased in March 1974. I was 20 years old and still have her.
That’s really cool! Great pistol they are! Thanks
That’s nice you got two I have been trying to get one for some time. Thanks for the video.
Thanks! Couldn’t find one until that day. It’ll come to you.
Ha! I had basically the same deal happen to me. I came across a blued 71/-2 “ a store took in trade and they were like eh no one is interested in this Old Army we need to make some room in the display case….. sold, couldn’t believe the price….. a month later a came across a stainless 71/2” with a Kriss converter, the finish on this one looks like they ran it through the garbage disposal, to say it wasn’t maintained would be an understatement, it shoots 2” groups all day long even without cleaning it, with the conversion cylinder and cowboy loads it’ll do 13/4” groups.
Love these hand guns. Had
Thank you Jay nice shooting and a wonderful gun
Thanks Les!
Hi Jay, great to see one of your Rugers out burning powder. I think its good to have a modern take on a Cap and Ball Revolver, especially when its a beast :) Mine is a Stainless Target version but I would like a blued one in time. Cheers Chris
Hey Chris! I have a stainless fixed sight ROA too…they are a lot of fun…smooth as silk. Thanks my friend. Cheers
Dang. That old girl hits hard.
Yes it does. And it hits this old guys arthritic fingers hard too lol.
25 yds. + and my Pietta 1851 Confederate Navy hits wherever it wants. All in all it's a fun decent copy of history.
lol. These things can have a mind of their own!!! I agree. It’s a fun decent copy of history. Bout the best we history buffs can do! Thanks
"I REFUSE To WATCH" on the grounds I passed Dozens of these Rugers up stupid cheap till about 5 years AGO, SS and Blued, all types of sights.
i WAS OVER AMP these times and on to brass, now I'm full cycle again. And sorry.
I’m really sorry brother. I just fell into a vat and came up sweet smelling. I’m sorry.
Good for you Jay !!!! Enjoy them as we enjoy your videos!!!. If I ran across one at a reasonable price I would buy one too.
Thanks brother! Both deals were incredible. Couldn’t say no! I will enjoy them and share that I hope!!!
I love mine, bought it used when I was 16 for 150 bucks in 87, now I have a 45 Colt conversion in it, need to get a speed base4 pin, awesome revolvers.
Yes. They are awesome. I need more time with mine but I’ll get er dialed in. Thanks
Glad you got both. I’ve been looking for a good stainless for a while.
Thanks! I’ll take my good luck and have fun.
Ahh, my first big-bore revolver! Bought one mail order when I was 17. Still have it at 64! Also have one with the factory brass dragoon (SBH) grip frame.
That’s great! These are nice!
Well done. 👍
Thank you!!!
I acquired a polished stainless one with adjustable sights for $300 about 15 yrs ago. I don't shoot it nearly enough, on account I still have a couple cans of Goex 3F left in my stash.
Would like to see both Rugers on paper from the bench.
Thanks. I’ll do that in the near future. Me too!!
Now that Ruger looks like fun and pretty accurate. Now it will be interesting to see that stainless in action. Would a stainless gun give us a stainless reputation? I guess I’ll see soon enough, eh? Kind Thanks, Many Blessings and More Shootin! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
It’s a fun one! I’ll get the stainless out soon…I’m afraid maybe we’d need more than a stainless gun for that lol! Thanks Davey!!!
You got a deal if you paid less than $900 for each one. I shot mine today. I had a blast ! I did put slix shots nipples on it. It's been 100% reliable with the 70 or so CCI#11 I've fired with the new nipples. CCI#10 are tight & fail on the 1st round about 70%. They usually go on second strike. Thanks for recommending Slixshots. I also put them on my 1851 Colt Navy square back, also 100%.
The ROA has the deserved reputation as the most accurate c&b revolver right off the shelf. Nice finding them because Ruger sadly stopped making them when they were no longer bringing in the revenue enjoyed during the BP rush of the 70’s.
I agree with the reputation and that I am fortunate to get them! I’m happy about it!
Two back to back within an hour apart? Wow! That's a successful treasure hunt.
Yea! I wasn’t even hunting either. The one in the vid I wanted and that day he decided to sell it to me. The second one was pure accident!!!! Thanks
Darn good chootin’!
Thank you brother!!! It was/is fun
I know a gent that purchased a Ruger Old Army back in the early days of the model. He has it and a later model in SS and both have dropped many a deer and hog to keep his freezer filled. Come to think of it, the only rifle he owns (that I know of for sure) is an old CVA in .58cal that he has taken a bison and a moose with. None of those smoke wagons are for sale....Trust me...I've made offers and I'm reasonably sure I'm not in his will.
Once you find yours…gotta keep it. Maybe you are in his will … or start taking him coffee lol. They are fine revolvers for sure
Dream gun
It’s sweet. I need a bit more time with it then it’ll be right there. Thanks
I tried 30g pyrodex cylinders, CCI magnum percussian caps, and Missouri Bullets 45 cal 200g semi-wadd cutters.
That’s a “do damage” kinda load! Nice
When these were a couple hundred NIB I considered buying one, but I only cared for replicas at the time and also you could buy two Remington or Colt replicas with plenty left over for powder, cap and balls for two hundred. Nowadays you can't buy anything for that new! I certainly regret not buying one though. My semi local gun store had two NIB ones on his shelf and was asking 800 each!
Yes. I’ve seen them 1000 or more! I didn’t pay near that thank goodness! I still love my colt replicas but this was fun!!!
I have same gun, not a fan, they made it harder to take cylinder in and out. I prefer 36cal blk powder revolver, that has all the bang I want, I just wish I could find one in 1858 Remington stile............
I found my ROA to be more accurate with round ball than the Kaido conicals . The Kaido conical shot high at 25 yrds with the rear sight all the way down and groups were a bit larger at 4 inches than the round balls.
I’m shooting round balls here. I will try Kerr conicals at some point too, along with kaido. But I tend to favor round balls. Thanks for the info.
I own a Ruger using #10 caps
That’s great. I’ve never tried to fit 10’s I will try. Thanks. I have extra 11’s so I’m glad they work lol
Hey partner, is that card challenge still up and going?
